This Week's SATURDAY SHORTS: Spear Hunting, Space Adventures, and The Toxic Avenger's Christmas!

Hello ladies and gentlemen, your pal Muldoon here with a handful of wild shorts created by AICN readers, shorts that are sure to rock your world. This week's lineup is a tonal roller coaster with docs, parodies, and some damn fine dramas mixed with knee slapping comedy (though I don't think I've ever slapped my knee while laughing). I've lined them up in a way that's almost like a gut punch of emotion immediately followed up with a comedy that will tickle your funny bone. As always, I hope you find a film here that you might not have seen otherwise, something that either blows you away, makes you laugh, or inspires you to go grab a camera and make your own badass short. Ultimately, that's the whole point of SATURDAY SHORTS - to have fun and see some interesting visions from folks all over the world. So let's jump right on in. Below is roughly 45 minutes of quality films from all over.  I certainly hope you're able to full-screen each one, crank that volume up to eleven, and enjoy the show.

Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:

SPEARHUNTER

TRT: 13:58

To start us up on the right track we have an interesting doc from Co-Directors Luke Poling and Adam Roffman. "Deep in the wilds of rural Alabama, a spear-hunter proclaims himself the world's greatest and erects a museum dedicated to his own obsession. In this atmospheric and darkly funny documentary, an offbeat cast of lovers, acolytes, and critics of the megalomaniacal spear-hunter remember his distinctive tactics both for killing and for leaving a legacy." I don't hunt, but I know quite a few folks who do - none of which kill with spears, so this doc not only shed some light on that, but was able to capture some rather bizarre personalities as well, all while set against some gorgeous imagery. What an incredible dip into another world. If you want to know more about the film, then be sure to check out its rather impressive website for more info!

IF STAR WARS WERE YOUR EX-GIRLFRIEND

TRT: 3:26

STAR WARS. STAR WARS. STAR WARS. In case you're not yet fully saturated at the moment with all things STAR WARS (which why would you be??), here's a damn fun film from the gang at XVP Comedy. They've created some insanely fun shorts and this one simply follows suit. "A Rom Com starring Star Wars as the girl who had everything, except the guy who got away... Fanboy." Check out the Youtube Channel for XVP Comedy if you feel like laughing.

BIRTHDAY

TRT: 12:30

Next up is a solid drama from Chris and Heather King. "When a young military wife gets news that her Marine husband has been severely wounded in combat, she discovers that life ahead for them is going to be a difficult and yet amazing journey." The film's screened at pretty much every film fest you can think of, so it's a real treat to have it here on SATURDAY SHORTS. It's powerful stuff. I certainly hope to see more from Chris, Heather, and the gang at Watermark Films.

SPACE VOTE

TRT: 2:20

In the mood for some humor? (If not, then you should be, damn it!) That's what Direcotr Kirk Johnson and the folks at STAG Comedy have for us, a pile of funny set in space, where no one can hear you scream... or enjoy sweet "space margs." If you even remotely enjoy SPACE VOTE, then do yourself a favor and check out a few other skits STAG has up on their site.

PARTY ANIMAL

TRT: 9:35

Director Adam Bowers has our next film, a fun look at the life of a party animal. "Chris wakes up after a wild night and finds out that his life is in ruins." It's a sobering, yet still fun look at a person you only really know as "that guy." Check out Adam's Vimeo page or take a peek at his feature that played back at Sundance 2010.

A VERY TROMA CHRISTMAS: VOL. 1

TRT: 5:37

Our last video of the day is an excellent reminder of ensuring you keep a sense of humor during the holidays. It's absolutely not PC and perfectly takes jabs left and right at the commercialism of the holidays, plus the Toxic Avenger is in it. All you need to know is Lloyd Kaufman voices Buddha - and it's glorious. Directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Lily Hayes Kaufman, the film is animated by Justin J Bowen. Check out Justin's Facebook Page, Troma's site, and/or Troma's kickass Youtube Channel for more!

BOOM! That's it for this week, ladies and gents. As always, I hope you had fun and saw something that made your day better. I'll see you fine folks a week from now with a handful of new films to share. Have a good one and be sure to check out past articles if you're in the mood for more!

If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at "Mike@aintitcool.com"

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published. The more info you send my way, the more info there is to put with your short.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

BY THE WAY: If you've had a short featured here, that means that I personally am a fan of your work, so feel free to shoot me any kind of news on new projects/films/whatever. I can't say I'll be able to help or in what capacity, but I'm interested in your work and am always down to see more! (Keep making cool stuff, everyone!)
