Behold An Awesome Poster For Joseph Kosinski's OBLIVION!!
Earlier this week, we pointed you towards some amazing concept art from OBLIVION - the Tom Cruise starring Sci Fi epic from TRON LEGACY overlord Joseph Kosinski.
Now, IGN brings us the first poster for the film...and it's rather awesome. Click the pic to jump to a larger version at IGN.
Really, really excited to see footage from this film. TRON LEGACY was so fucking beautiful...I'm dying to see how Kosinski evolves his 'eye' and style...

I completely agree about the look of Tron Legacy. I was more entertained by the visuals rather than what the plot had to offer. Hope this turns out great
-
That being said, poster looks cool and Tron Legacy looked great, but I felt was kind of flat. Would love to have Daft Punk do the soundtrack for all future Jack Reacher flicks.
-
It's landscape oriented and also a single moment in time (as opposed to a collage of different times like Raiders or Star Wars): distant lone figure stoic, face unseen, backdrop or foreground of detail-porn (see the look of the insides of the exposed Death Star in "Return of the Jedi") unnatural architecture that is mostly gray and with an overall gradation of light or color to seal everything together and give it an epic painterly feel.

I like it. It has a far future ruined Earth look mixed with sleek retro sci-fi style, reminiscent of one of my favorites, the original Planet of the Apes
by lv_426
It is also not surprising seeing imagery like this for Oblivion, considering that Joseph Kosinski was an architecture major before he embarked on a path towards filmmaking. I hate to admit it, but so far Oblivion is a more intriguing sci-fi film to me than is Blomkamp's Elysium.
-
"All you need is kill" - the otheer sci-fi movie Cruise is making. Anyway - I really enjoy Tron Legacy, I don't care what other people think, it looked and sounded amazing, the light cycle scene was amazing, and it had Jeff Bridges being 'dude-like' - weirdly, the original Tron doesn't do much for me.

Does even the average Joe fall for ''from the producers of'' any more?
by spacehog
I mean I guess it must work, or they're just counting on people seeing/remembering the movie name and not the ''producers'' part, but it still kind of amazes me. Especially when they feel the need to use it on a poster prominently featuring Tom Cruise's name.
-
...an appropriately epic theme song for this flick. Looks to be a great slice of proper science fiction (love the retro podthingumabob).

I don't know what it takes to please some people
-
I'm there. Tom Cruise doesn't annoy me because I can separate his acting from his personal life. I don't give a shit about his belief in "Xenu". Some people believe a man was born through immaculate conception, healed the sick, walked on water then died for our sins only to be resurrected. So yeah, don't give a fuck what he believes in as long as the movies he makes are good. And Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was a damn good movie. When has Tom Cruise made a truly awful movie? Oh and since when is 5'7 a midget? I'm sure any person who is "vertically challenged" would love to be 5'7. People on AICN are always reaching in an attempt to justify their irrational hatred of everything mainstream.

Also despite my hate for Tron:Legacy I have to admit it looked beautiful. So I don't think Kosinski was the problem on that film. That honor probably belongs to Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis(please tell me those hacks didn't write this!), who also wrote all the worst episodes of Lost. Anhyhow count me very interested in Oblivion!

I'll see this based SOLEY on the amazing design work and visuals from Tron Legacy. Joesph Kosinski is a visionary director and this is HIS project (he was a hired gun on Tron). The guy is an architect and associate professor. His visual style has already been proven and I can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve for Oblivion.

I sometimes have (potentially) unfair biases against actors for all sorts of reasons but, usually, they relate to that individual's work and not anything they do in their off-camera lives unless it's detrimental to others. For instance - Cruise got a ton of shit when it was heard he was cast as Lestat in Interview with the Vampire. 'A *midget* Lestat? He should be played by someone who looks like David Bowie!!!' blah blah blah Even Rice herself said casting Pitt and Cruise was like casting Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer as Louis and Lestat. And then both of them put in superb performances, pitt's being the weaker of the 2 - I still think it's one of Cruise's best performances (to me, easily on par with Bot4oJ, etc)..it worked so well that Rice recanted her initial misgivings. Of course, this is all pre-winfrey-couch-flipout routine. is that what it was? is that why people hate the guy? or the rumors that katie gave birth to a l. ron hubbard mutant clone baby? or that he's a closeted homo? i read once where he was at a matinee premiere in europe during his biggest draw days and the throng of people were pushing each other towards an anchored fence. cruise noticed a young girl being crushed against the fence and so, with his retinue looking on in shock, jumps the fence and helps to create room to get this girl out of the crowd crush. another time i heard he's filming on location and, between takes, goes to a local convenient store to get whatever...sees a jar on the counter for a local kid needing an operation and just drops well over $5 grand in the jar. just like that. weirdo maybe but those are not the actions of a dickhead egotistical asshat. and beyond the personal, all i can say is i have yet to see a movie with the guy that wasn't an enjoyable flick in some way (even that knight and day stinker had some decent moments in it) just watched him as les grossman after a while of not seeing TT - he's perfect in that movie. perfect. i don't get the hate.

by D o o d
It was a look developed by Syd Mead for the original movie. Kosinski has nothing to do with it.

You need to add some context to the article before the redgeek takes it down and posts his own article to make it look like he's the one that brought this news to us.
-
Good use of perspective, composition and a seemingly great amount of detail work. It surely immediately grabs your attention which is the sole purpose of a (first) poster. You remember the horrendous first poster for X Men: First Class? the floating head on sillouette wheelchaired Dr. Xavier? a 5 minute job...this poster for OBLIVION is the opposite..great amount of good work in this one...IMO!

-
But I really wanted this movie to be Oblivion based on the Elder Scrolls RPG game. That would be cool if done right...
-
The first thought that came to mind when I saw this poster was that Joseph Kosinski should be at the helm of Episode VII. It hadn't occurred to me previously and maybe I have been out of the loop and this is already a popular thinking. Add Claudio Miranda on as DP and it'd be a surefire visual spectacle. With Michael Arndt having a hand in the screenplay for both Oblivion and Episode VII, maybe behind the scenes the dots are connecting in some way.
-
It looked fantastic, but was utterly devoid of anything resembling a coherent or intelligent story. And CGI'd young Jeff Bridges was creepy. Fail. By 45 minutes in my attention was wandering to bills, work, sports...what have you. By an hour I was reading a magazine. An hour and 10, flipping channels. Looked great, utterly empty. And no evidence to suggest Kosinski can pull off a good film.
-
You have this vast and large 'Environment', huge structures, tall buildings; and yet, you have a handful of 'programs bumping conveniently into each other again and again. That club scene was ridiculously small scaled! At least, with the prequels, george Lucas managed to make his universe seem full of life and the feeling that it surely IS expansive and populated.

while he does act well and gets a lot of shit....all I can think is...hey, it's Tom Cruise. AND that really gets in the way of a story being told. Especially Sci-Fi. I am always up for new (no name established) actors for any Sci-Fi Film....It makes it more sci-fi...as in discoveryyyy
-
Seriously, why not reserve that word for -actual- terrible films. If you say it's mediocre, fine. Boring, fine. It's not garbage in any sense, so why call it that? Just to get a rise out of people who liked it? And you couldn't comprehend the story? It was pretty straight forward and coherent, so maybe you have a problem with your attention span.
-
It's rare to see a good poster these days. Definitely makes me wonder what this is about.
-
The original movie was the same way, though I would say much moreso. I'm glad they didn't throw in the Massive CG crowds and make it feel like a completely different universe than the first one (like, ahem, George Lucas did with the prequels.)

A lot of the people slamming Tron Legacy in these talkbacks are just shit-talking little kids trying to get people who liked the film irritated. Ask someone who calles Tron Legacy garbage to list 5 of their favorite films. They won't because then YOU have something to guage THEM by and they will no longer be the anonymous, gutless little pussies they are. I don't lurk on talkbacks for films I hated, it's trolling at the highest levels. Tron Legacy was fantastic. It's my son's Star Wars. He was 9 when we saw it in Imax 3-D and it was mind-blowing. He actually prefers Tron Legacy to any of the Star Wars movies. I actually prefer it to the prequels. CLU digital facial effects get slammed but a rubbery, cartoonish Iron Man/Thor bouncing off cliffs gets a free pass. Fanboys see what they want to see.

The Matrix was the first movie to prove you can tent-pole by shifting ahead of the March crowd, especially with high-end or experimental sci-fi. First weekend of April really didn't seem to hurt it much. If the film's awesome, word of mouth will ensure this is the only thing people are seeing...
-
Beautifully composed. Lots of interesting individual elements (e.g., the parked ship). Conveys a lot of information about the film succinctly. Good tagline. Stunning work, especially compared to the never-ending stream of bad Photoshop jobs that pass for movie posters these days.
-
Yeah, it 'looks cool', the art is cool looking with the waterfall and all, it makes for a cool image but it also makes no fucking sense and is impossible! That is obviously the Empire State Building. There is no way, in any amount of time, under any circumstances the Empire State Building would be intact, embedded in a wall of rock, presumably buried into the earth with a waterfall coming over it. Sorry, this is just silly. Even if some theoretical process or event came along that lowered the ground the building stood on that deep into the earth, it would destroy the building completely. I hope the movie will be good (as tired as I am of 'post-apocalyptic shit), but this poster is just stupid and strains credulity too far. It's an example of just throwing some cool imagery together that look cool, despite the fact that it would be impossible. It's like making a poster that shows the Golden Gate Bridge buried in the Grand Canyon...ridiculous!
-
except for a decent lead actor and a coherent plot. The music was gripping--I mean, heck, it's Daft Punk--the design and CGI oozer uber coolness up the wazoo, and the supporting actors/actresses were fantastic, and Olivia Wilde is hot. And yet, despite all of this, the lead actor was about as charismatic as drying paint, and the plot was about as gripping as a limp fish's handshake. Which is regrettable, since it ended up dragging the movie down by about 50 notches.

it might not even be Earth in that poster.
-
Some people are just haters. Anyone or anything successful and they have to try and tear it down, really a sad personality trait. Look at all the bullshit hatred towards Peter Jackson and The Hobbit, just bizarre. I couldn't really give a fuck about Cruise's beliefs / actions, they don't seem to really harm anyone. Sure Scientology is a load of baloney and a sham money-making machine and if Cruise is gay it's a shame he has to hide this because the industry / the box office dictate this but is he really hurting anyone? Not in my opinion. More importantly anyone know the basic outline re this film, looks like it could be interesting. And the poster's cool.
-
Yes, it's supposed to be Earth. And asking for some basic respect of science and realism in a movie that supposed to be science-fiction (not fantasy) is not asking too much. This poster just takes it a bit too far.
-
You don't think Scientology has harmed anyone?! What planet do you live on?? Try doing some research into them, they are an evil, money-grubbing cult/corporation that destroys peoples lives. I admit I too have a hard time enjoying Cruise or any other celebrity into Scientology. Cruise is a good actor, and he's in one of my favorite movies of all time (Minority Report), but him being a nut literally at the very top of Scientology does taint my ability to just enjoy his work. Scientology is evil.
-
Scientology is definitely a cult that goes out it's way to try take down critics. There was an interesting 2 part BBC documentary which shows how they harass investigators, threaten families etc. So I agree the cult itself does do damage. It's a shame Cruise is credulous enough to be a high ranking member, apparently, within this cult. But does his choice of belief harm people? I believe whatever credibility he gives the cult is massively outweighed by the fact that people who are going to be snared by it are unfortunately always going to be snared by such pernicious belief systems. I think they would be there regardless of Cruise. Plenty of entertainers hold to beliefs I would not have any truck with, does that mean I have to boycott anything they appear in?
-
Dec. 8, 2012, 2:49 a.m. CST
I don't give a crap about Scientology or Cruise's personal life. I can't stand him on screen.
by Margot Tenenbaum
-
You don't 'have' to boycott anything or anyone...that's a choice that's up to every individual and their own ethical makeup. Again, for me, Cruise is too high up in a truly horrible organization for me to be able to enjoy him without reservation. If it was just some average Joe on the street who got sucked into the cult of Scientology, no, I would not have as much moral reservation about them. But Cruise is a whole different story.
-
Fair enough, we'll just have to agree to disagree.
-
He's almost always the same character, but I find that character perfectly watchable.

If the timescale suggested by it are true, we could be looking at something at least interesting to look at, if not a good movie. Aside from Cruises private life he has delivered movie entertainment again and again. Minority Report, War of the Worlds, Ghost Protocol and MI3 Ok, so we have also got that dross I don't even remember the title to, that had Diaz in it, but lets wait and see how this one fares. I guess, any scifi flick with Cruise=Good Cop/Mean SOB with Cruise=Good Romantic Cruise=Stay the fuck away!
-
From what I've heard, this takes place on a future Earth with some sort of hostile aliens who have wrecked the landscape and natural order of things. My guess is the buildings growing out of a cliff with a waterfall in between them could just be a provocative image for this poster, and not something we will actually see in the film.
-
It looks like NY in a future so far flung that at one time lava engulfed the city. It is shelving off the sides of the buildings and the black sandy stuff in the foreground and the shape of the rocks suggest water action erosion as well so inundation. I think it's sweet, especially the vehicle. Not a fan of the Tron sequel I watched it with my boys and by the end was openly mocking it and when they are escaping in that vehicle and those flyer things go after then I said: "Yeah watch, now they jump in the gun nests and the flyers will zoom around like tie fighters.." thinking of the most absurd thing I could imagine, then howled with laughter when they actually went there. Still, it was more enjoyable the original and my boys liked it.

Last I was aware, my opinion on a film doesn't interfere in any way with your right to enjoy (or deride) the same. Kinda goes without saying my post=my opinion. You liked Tron: Legacy? Have at it, baby.
-
It's an exercise in sexy visuals that ultimately has about as much substance as a deodorant commercial. And I found the 'cool' stuff disappointing too. Nothing in the new Tron world looks remotely 'computery'. It's all photoreal. How boring. Laugh at the original all you want, but it had a true sense of purpose to it's style. Oh and the Lightcycle race in Tron is far superior to that of Legacy. No straight lines? That was the whole POINT.

Instead of just a badly photoshopped image trying to sell a face. Not been this intrigued by a single image in a long time. I want to see this.

Which is odd, because almost all of his movies are flawed. Many of them are too long and lack an effective resolution. Several are full of flaring plot holes (Inception is hilarious in this regard). They're all stylish, but the only Nolan film I REALLY like is The Prestige. (Of note, the plot change decisions wrt to the source material are all good ones.) TDK could have been great, but the ending is flabby, and the Two-Face plot is mishandled. TDKR was his least interesting movie to date.

Laugh at the original all you want, but it had a true sense of purpose to it's style

I agree. The original Tron is underrated and underappreciated by almost everyone who's 35 or younger, because it's judged by the standards of the world it helped to make. It had so many cinematic firsts, and was a bold and truly original project, with many neat narrative ideas. It's a shame that more people don't appreciate that, but I suppose it's hard to analyse a film's historical significance rather than merely judge it at a gut level as though it had been released yesterday.

Is there some neat trick to posting comments here that include quote marks? If I do that, one in every three of them seems to get destroyed in the process, but I can't divine the rule set that governs this destruction.

Chris Nolan is the finest genre filmmaker since John Carpenter, JJ Abrams is an ad man disguised as an artist, Tom Cruise makes me uncomfortable and not in a fun way and I don't care for Peter Jackson one way or the other
by Margot Tenenbaum
That's not hating that's called having opinions.

Neither are perfect films but both have a LOT going for them. Tron Legacy is the best looking sci-fi film since the original Matrix. I wish Sam Flynn was more of a cool nerd like his dad than a shitty fake Hollywood extreme sports asshole. Once he gets inside the computer he's okay though. I hope they really truly get a shot at making Tron 3. And i hope Kevin Flynn comes back somehow. The original Tron was so far ahead of its time but you probably had to be a kid at the time it was released to really appreciate it.

Just seen the trailer on DailyMotion. Won't be long before the Studios yank it from there as well, so go git it...
by Bricklyne
But damn it looks good. But then again, nothing classes up a trailer like Good Old Morgan Freeman - even a scruffy looking post-Apocalyptic Freeman, who seems to be having fun. But the visuals, set design, the cinematography (good CGI use).....man I wan't to watch this NOW. ...oh, and in case they still haven't yanked it yet, here you go boys..... http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xvpk3t_oblivion-trailer-1-vo-hd_shortfilms#.UMOeeFQrXh4

Fact #1: Anyone who bashes scientology and also belongs to any of the other countless religions around the globe is a fucking HYPOCRITE. It is no sillier or more nonsensical than any other collection of fairy tales or means of control called organized religion. Fact #2: Tron: Legacy was utter WANK. And no, i'm not a *shit talking little kid*, quake 2. Anyone who appreciates quality writing, acting, or a compelling, well told story... and REAL SETS, would be extrememly disappointed by that film. The people that enjoy that flick have LOW STANDARDS and are easily entertained. Case closed. Fact # 3: If you disagree with fact's 1 and 2 you are stupid and i hate you. Good day : )

I will be a saaaaad paaaaaanda.

Nice looking poster-hope its potential spills over into the film.

Does anyone here actually go to see a movie BECAUSE of Tom Cruise?Surely not!?

Listen: TRON LEGACY was crap that bombed. Production Budget: $170 million Domestic Total Gross: $172 million Also: Tom Cruise is an angry, confused little man whose =religion= has been rightfully classified as a business in most of the civilized world. And get this: The trailer gives away the entire plot (it was an inside job).

There are three different actresses in the trailer, and they all look the same
by Hardboiled Wonderland
With the same "daddy won't buy me a new BMW" puppy-dog eyes. Other than that, the movie looks awesome.

hail indeed.

No need to panic over the trailer disappearing, it's on Apple's trailer website. Trailer looks good, some interesting tech on display.

Hey, you lazy AICN peeps, the trailer has already been posted up at Apple in Glorious Quicktime (TM)...
by Bricklyne
....get off your fat lazy asses and post it here ASAP!!!! Or is this one of those situations where everyone is afraid to post it because they think Harry will embarrass them and take down their article and re-post it as his own, and now we all have to wait for Harry to get off his fat lazy ass to post it instead? (and that's a lot of waiting)

Yeah, I'm that easy...

Katie Holmes hit Tom with divorce papers halfway through filming Oblivion. It'll be interesting to see if this affects his performance.

even though "Tron Legacy" was a great visual feast. Looks overtly bizarre, and another platform for the Cruiser to play action man. After this, "Jack Reacher" and "All You Need Is Kill," he seems to be concentrating on more action orientated roles just to keep his physical prowess in tact. By the time it comes round to M:I-5, the little fella will be in his early fifties, and still performing his crazy acrobatics of the next high-rise building.

Morrowind movie or GTFO.
