Unbelieveably, And Gloriously, We're One Step Closer To An ALF Live Action/CG Hybrid Film!!
A few months ago we posted a piece about the hopes for/possibility of an ALF movie. For those who don't recall, ALF, which stands for Alien Life Form, chronicles the adventures of irrtascible, huggable, cat-hungry alien Gordon Shumway - who lands hooks up with an Earth family.
Per THIS piece at THR, it's sounding like said movie is closer to happening...
Sony Pictures Animation has closed a deal to acquire rights to the classic 1980s sitcom ALF and will develop the property into a hybrid CG/live action feature.
[EDIT]
No writer or director is attached.
[EDIT]
(Paul) Fusco voiced the title character on the show and is expected reprise his role for the movie.
I'm not sure what tine the film will take - given the climate of soft-shoeing and political correctness which seems to prevail in much modern cinema, I fear an ALF movie may end up being watered down. But there was a certain, subtle edge to the original NBC television series which ran from 186-1990. If even a hint of that can be ported to the big screen? This could be a lot of fun...

Did this even ever achieve the 'so bad it's good status'? Is it a beloved property at all?

Hasn't ALF always sucked?

Or, you know, you could proof-read. Just sayin'. :)

Can we get some scenes on Melmac, or is that too much to ask?

I want "8 is Enough" the movie now. Or a pet rock movie. Now.
by Darth Macchio
Wait...is that too 70s? We're in the 80's recycled fartsauce caserole now right... How about Snorks?!?! Remember them? Onion headed smurfs basically? I'm sure people will start remembering if you make a movie about them. How about Mon-chi-chi, Mon-chi-chi? Awfully soft and cuddly? Do we blame this on "Ted"? Or the recent muppet movie? It seemed like they were done recycling old 70s/80s tv shows for the more pure reboots/prequel/sequel tropes? I didn't want to be a hater but reading the above sure sounds like hater-talk... ...sigh...
-
comes on The HUB (also known as that channel that shows The Wonder Years and Batman:TAS). Naturally he loves it.
-
Don't you remember the old Alf tales your granparents used to tell you in front of the campfires. Alf tales have been passed down from generation to generation before being vislized on the small screen in the later 80's. The year 186 was indeed hard times for many, but the tales of Alf, an angel from the heavens who ate the demon cats that plagued the flat planet was what made many a man sleep comfortable at night.
-
As much as I love the puppet,CGI would enable them to show a lot more. Cant wait for this!!!

by Pete Michaelson
Did you see Ted? Being that that flick is about as close an analogue as you could get to ALF, and that Ted was about as un-PC as you can get, I don't understand that comment at all. If you can make a movie about a pot-smoking, cursing, fucking teddy bear, ALF could probably go balls to the wall and tear up the box office. Will they do that? Is Sony brave enough to take a family-friendly series and make it into a crass adult comedy? I imagine that the box office returns that Ted continues to see might be a pretty big incentive to give it a shot.

Alf ? In the UK we had Metal Mickey. It was really really truly spectacularly bad.

But it had Irene Handl, you little fruit-bat.

As opposed to using CGI when a puppet would do, I'll wait until I see some screens before I pass judgement. I mean CGI Yoda and Gollum were pretty damn good.

Ok, MAYBE if he's a CGI puppet, it could be ok, like the way Ted is a CGI teddy bear. But if they try to make him look "realistic", it'll be an epic fail.

So say we all.

This is gonna suck enlarged hirsute testicles, i know it, you know it, they know it. ALF is memory tinted as it is and it worked fine in the tv sitcom format but I don't see this becoming anything more than a Smurfs/YogiBear/Garfield non-event. Colour me uninterested.

This show was on the other day and it is the joyless heroin fueled suicide inducing nightmare it always was.
by UltraTron
-
The reason he's funny in interviews and not on the show is that the guy who played ALF is a funny guy who was hampered by shit writing on the show. Hopefully if this moves forward he gets more input into the character instead of spouting lines written by some hack.
-
While Garfield sucked to most of us, it made a shit-ton of money... so if the execs see people saying "This=Garfield" that translates to bank, son. You say it like it's to their detriment, but it's really not. It IS a business after all. Garfield and ALF were simply not for you.

it's a sad world where you are right. All i'm saying is that it probably won't be anything to get excited about , excited headline of this (typo ridden!)article notwithstanding. Proof reading folks, it saves lives!)

I used to love this show when it was first on and we used to get it on sundays at about 5pm in the uk. Went to rewatch it about a month or two ago and the pilot was so bad i couldn't believe it. I didn't watch any more so it could have been just that the pilot was bad but it had aged so badly i couldn't be bothered with the rest. Not to say it couldn't be turned into a great movie as the character and story are pretty decent. With a top notch comedy writer who knows.

..and the cartoon spin-off ALF Tales was even funnier. The animation was high quality too.
-
Directed by Tarantino. FX by KNB.
-
ALF wasn't funny back in the day, just a stupid '80s take on "My Favorite Martian," which was too stupid in itself to reboot. As said above, it's not nearly as good as people remember. But try explaining that to dimwitted, shortsighted H'weird producers.

ALF was edgy? A mild joke about threatening to eat the family cat each week is considered edgy?
by Al
I watched it when I was a kid so I don't remember exactly anything edgy or subervisve about it. All I remember is the damn series ended with ALF being captured by the military so I had to wait years and years for a conclusion. Which was the TV movie "Project ALF" starring Martin Sheen as a military guy!

ALF is actually really funny. But the "TV show" isn't (if that makes sense).
by sweeneydave
Aside from the dad, the family was boring. And the writing was the same every week. I bought the first two seasons for my kids recently. After the first couple episodes, it becomes more formulaic than Full House. Sure, ALF remained funny. But he learned a lesson every week, only to have forgotten it by the beginning of the next episode. I know that's really nitpicking. After all, character growth wasn't the point of the old fashioned sitcom. But as an adult, I grew tired of it quickly.

Remember watching Alf as a kid and liking it because he was a puppet. He seemed like a smartass which I liked. Watched about 10 minutes of it on Hub the other day and it didn't really hold my attention. Alf and Willie were stuck on a train with a hobo. Having said that I would check this out if the trailer looked good/funny.

...with Archie Bunker in it. And, fuck Alf. Unless they do it like Ted (which they won't), it has no chance to be better than Garfield, Alvin & the Chipmunks, Smurfs and the like. Did we get a Knight Rider movie yet? How about Kung Fu? Well, at least no one will care when they find a way to 'ruin' Alf.
-
I can wait.
-
I would love to see a movie based on the old Kung Fu show. Years ago there was talk of but nothing ever happened apparently.
-
It's such a no-brainer. I would probably prefer a "Muay Thai,"show staring Tony Jaa or a worthy desciple, in the Kung Fu formula, but even a straight adaptation would work. Their are so many Asian action stars that are still relatively unknown to our audiences, I would think this would have been capitalized upon by now.
-
As a kid and thought this was a shitty tv show back then and could care less now. Take your time Sony, very few will be standing in line for this shitravaganza.

Where dad keeps sneaking out to blow homeless guys under overpasses for crack, gets arrested, and then stays up until dawn every morning with a pistol against his temple praying that this time, this time he'd be brave enough to pull the trigger. It becomes a classic ALF moment when he finally pulls the trigger, instantly killing him AND the cat. Alf feasts over the still twitching body, as the rest of the family shuffles in to confirm what they already know to be true. Hey, it's a reboot, it's dark, and metafiction. I'm picturing Daniel day Lewis for alf and Channing Tatum as homeless drifter#3
