This Week's SATURDAY SHORTS Are Nothing To Laugh At... Scratch that, prep your funnybone.

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here making my weekly trek out of the jungle to bring you a kickass lineup of fun shorts made by sexy folks just like yourselves. This week I've got a slew of funny flicks that should put a smile on your face (if not, then I'll just assume you have a heart of stone and just can't be pleased - someone who quite possibly steals ice cream from kids after kicking their puppy...) Seriously, the whole point of SATURDAY SHORTS for me is relaxing and getting to dip your toes in a mini film festival every weekend (hopefully when you're not working), watching things you may or may not have heard of just because like me you're always on the lookout for unique stories and BAM! that screams "Show me something funny/enjoyabe, so I can forget about Bill and Linda back at the office riding my ass about XYZ." Well friend, you're in luck.

Also, while I might be screening a short today I recieved a week or so ago, there's stuff here I got sent back in March, but for some reason or other haven't been able to post yet. If you've shot in a short, first off "Hell yeah, you rock," but the flipside = if you haven't seen it yet, please don't go all Negative Nancy in the Talkbacks below. This is a unique thing we've got here - I look at the Talkbacks as a sort of post Q&A, an opportunity to ask questions and share your thoughts - however if you're thoughts are "I banged your mother" or "Worst... movie... ever!" then take that somewhere else por favor. Let's just have some fun.

Let's get this laughfest rolling.

Go grab yourself some popcorn, lock your kids in a closet, kill the lights, relax and check out this little weekly film fest we've got ourselves here:

Let's kick today's shindig of fun off with this twisted black comedy here, sent in by filmmaker Leigh Richards. I'm left slightly disturbed after watching this black comedy, but kind of like that (and it's got a gorgeous overall design with a freaky real feeling primary set, the colors/lack thereof are damn sexy).

"Vincent wants out of a sour relationship with Alessandra, but she's not leaving until she gets what she wants.."

If you dig it, be sure to hit up Leigh's website HERE.

Zeik's Bad Day

TRT: 27:20

Director Ryan Shovey gives us a nice slice of life with this next short, well a slice of life that includes an army of flesh eating zombies. Fun Stuff here. Check out the Ryan's website HERE.

TRT: 4:31

This next bit was sent in by Mike Scott and has a fun little style to it.

TRT: 0:30

Feel like a quick laugh? Bam, Chris Walsh has you covered in this 30 second stop motion chuckle of fun. If you dig ROTLC, then check out his company's site HERE.

TRT: 16:33

This scifi/comedy gem comes to us from writer-director Javier Grillo-Marxuach and as an added bonus - if you're into lots of blood, you'll certainly find yourself right at home  watching Javier go cinematically psycho. Again, fun stuff here. Check out the site for Javier's company HERE.

And that's the last short of the day, BUT hey I got a cool little update from Elliot Cowan, a filmmaker whose short I was able to have in a past column (THE THING IN THE DISTANCE). Apparenlty Elliot was hit up by a production company, secured a few investors, and is set to shoot a low budget feature with his characters (Boxhead and Roundhead). Elliot, along with Lyla Ribot, Anamaria Solis, and production designer Neil Ross looks to have the feature out next September beginning in Romania. Congrats guys!

Again, believe it or not - if you've had a short here, it's because I personally dig it, so feel free to keep me updated with whatever you guys/gals have going on. At any awesome rate, that's it for this week. I hope you dug these shorts as much as I did. Now it's back to the trenches, fleeing from a massive bipolar T-rex while on the hunt to save others! I'll see you folks next week with some more kickass shorts.

If you're new to SATURDAY SHORTS and want to check out some other really cool shorts that have screened here, here's an evergrowing list of filmic fun:

If you have a short and think it belongs here or are on the fence about whether to send it in, please do send it in - I'd love to see what you've put together. I've already seen hundreds of fresh new filmmakers' shorts and like any good addict, I need more!

Shoot me an email at ""

In the subject line include:

“SHORTS” + “Your film’s name” + “The film’s genre”

Then, in the body of the email, please include a synopsis of the film and any contact information you might think I need or would want published.

Please don’t feel the need to submit multiple times.  I swear to each of you I truly check every email I get, and sending the same short a few times just makes it a bit messier.

Remember, the filmmakers might still be in the audience, so feel free to share your thoughts in Talkbacks below. (JUST DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE). I picked them, so you know I think highly of all of these, but how about you fine folks? How'd you like 'em?

Ok, that was the black side of humour. "Sex with the Ex" was a fun little scene built on very little, thumbs up! It's aslways good if a short hints at a bigger story just waiting to be told. My favourite this week. Leigh's website otoh is lacking a certain je-ne-sais-quoi ...? "Zeik's Bad Day": Zombie comedies can be fun but this one didn't stand out. Clocking in at 25 minutes, this doesn't really count as a "short" either (for me), but tighter editing cutting this to <20min or better 15 would make this film snappier and more fun to watch. "Social Assasin": I liked the gag but not the animation, this could be a real film and would profit from funny actors. "ROTLC": :) "Reverse Parthenogenesis": The idea was nice, the acting not up to the story (sorry). Was the title inspired by Morrow's "Only Begotten Daughter" where Julie was begot by "inverse" parthenogenesis?

SATURDAY SHORTS — aka — A joke is a very serious thing!

    by justmyluck

SEX WITH THE EX Peculiar comedy of female and male; while of the same genes, being different creatures — more so when one is trying to rid themselves of the other. Seems determined to tease the viewer's threshold of uneasiness; which can't be bad when actors dive right into the fun. ZEIK'S BAD DAY Caught the 80s teen horror vibe and Goldsmith-y underscore right off the bat. While of DV quality, plentiful extras for location shoots, widescreen format and planning on key shots knocked this up a bar. Sharp script was shortchanged by inconsistent dialog sound recording. Would have shifted the bloody birthday invitation to the moment after *Blake* had been killed — lengthy setup left the resolution feel rushed. SOCIAL ASSASSIN Obsessive publishing of every personal activity online well-satirized. RISE OF THE LIVING CORPSE Nifty commercial bumper. REVERSE PARTHENOGENESIS Overlong. While well-cast, a skit format (the first two-thirds here) works best with known actors playing against type. Instead of shifting serious for the last third, the husband needed more humorous neurosis and panic while attempting to convince his wife (and the viewer) that he was just too nebbish to be Damien. As that was telegraphed by the doctor's bloody demise, his just inexplicably dropping dead may have served the story, and comedy, better. Overall this week = Is it a full moon?

  • That's why it's 27 minutes long. It is online in series form, where it ends each episode once there's a cut to black. We've actually played it at festivals this way, mixed in with other shorts I between each episode, and people seemed to enjoy it the way it was originally conceived, which is awesome. That's why it's so long when all 3 episodes are put together as one entity. Really appreciate the feedback on it, thought. It was a fun experiment made back when Dr Horrible was the only kind of web mini series out there.

thanks for clearing that up; still maybe you could do a 15 minute cut? many takes are just a few seconds too long and overall tighter editing might make for a real snappy film!

  • While an improvement from ONE TWO THREE you now have multiple entries called "Comedy" or "Sci-fi". I would respectfully suggest including the date or the series # in the link title. e.g: June 01 2012 - HORROR June 08 2012 - COMEDY June 15 2012 - MIXED GENRE BAG June 22 2012 - HORROR day 2 June 29 2012 - SCI-FI
