Will You Believe Henry Cavill, In His Superman Costume, Can Fly??
Merrick here...
We first got wind that this reveal was coming late last night, via THIS post at Nerd Repository. Seems one of Howard Stern's sidekicks/minions Tweeted that the unveiling of Cavill-in-costume would happen this morning, only to quickly delete said Tweet (but not before a number of people saw it, including Nerd Repository contributor Kyle Wilson).
Turns out Stern's dude...and the Nerd Repository team...were on the money, because the image you see below is our first look at Henry Cavill in costume as Superman.
Here's a crude enlargement of the same...

I can't get a higher-res version to upload at the moment, but JoBlo has a larger image HERE!
Earlier this week, we got a sense of Cavill as "Clark Kent" - via images you can find HERE. The Zack Snyder-directed MAN OF STEEL was recently pushed to a June 2013 release. To tide you over during what feels certain to be a very long wait, Hot Toys is releasing an insanely awesome 12" figure of Christopher Reeve in the role...

You can pre-order with an exclusive, with Kryptonite necklace HERE, or find the same w/o the necklace HERE.

his facial expression, sets a great tone. Like the cape.
Don't like the hair. Don't like the athletic-ware look to the material.
Looking forward to this. -

-
I need to know if he is wearing manties. NOW.
-
I've got a feeling Henry is going to do a great job in this movie
-
I was skeptical, but that's a huge improvement over the Superman Returns costume.
-
Wow, I REALLY like that picture.
The color scheme and lighting also makes it look like an Alex Ross picture, too. -
Hate on haters, but you can always tell when it is a Snyder shot. He does in fact have an identifiable style.
-
Anyway, Snyder always come wiht amazing visuals. The story part it's a whole different matter.
-
Supes needs to lose that bouffant hairdo like NOW. God..why didn't they just keep Brandon Routh he was fucking perfect !!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how an article revealing the new Superman costume gets turned into an advert for toys.
by brokentusk
Only on this website.
-
On a more serious note, what happened to Cavill? Looks like he was replaced by someone else. I'm loving the fake muscle arms and rubber suit BTW.
-
I feel silly even saying this but I cant get past the hair!! Plus did supes shop at the same store as spidey for the suit material??
-
A few weeks into the job and Cavill already looks like Superman more than TW's 10 Smallville run.

The hair's too big, the cape look bunched and uncomfortable, and the sleeves are bunched around the wrists
by rex carsalot
-
To me he has the face of a villian.
-
I really do, bring on a crazy over the top visually insane Superman movie, it's time for something fresh.
The cast is so good that even if the script isn't great, there will be some good performances and there will be action scenes.
I really just want action scenes, beautiful slomo action scenes of Superman fighting Zod. -
you gotta love it. Snyder must redeem is piece of crap Sucker Punch
-
The guy looks a lot like Bill Paxton! Not sure if I like the meshy costume. Why are all the superheros wearing mesh now a days?

Clearly no mundies in the larger image. I'm also not so sure how I feel about the "reptile scale" feeling of the suit yet.

AICN are about to launch an edit function for talkbacks, methinks.
by brokentusk
I was just able to edit other peoples' posts.
They've made the links invisible now, but you can modify the page source to get them back.
Welcome to 2011, AICN! -
One day Superman v Batman will happen on-screen, and on that very same day...my sack will explode.
-
The vault door looks very 30's - 40's inspired. That's a good sign.
-
The lighting and tone of the picture, along with the facial expression is cool.
What's going on with that costume, though? Is Nike or Under Armour designing superhero costumes these days? They seem to have designed both this and the new Amazing Spider-Man costume. Not sure I dig it.
Of course, everything will come down to the execution, the quality of the screenplay and the performances, and we'll forgive the look if Snyder pulls it off with aplomb.
You also better believe that many will be keeping an ear out for that musical score; after something as iconic as John Williams' Superman theme, as recognizable as the Star Wars theme, Hans Zimmer has a high standard to meet.
-
Snyder directing Superman: also perfect!
-
similar 'spiderman' texture, raised S shield (although bigger and a diff style of 'S'), muted colours (although maybe thats more to do with the lighting there - at least the cape looks red instead of brownish)
def has a retro element to it...like from the early toons mixed with a 300-ish style cape -
Subdued colours (but they're all there), strong-looking but not sexualised (yes Singer, I'm talking about you). The only thing I don't like is the general 'look' of the surroundings... there's something about the aesthetic that's worryingly similar to the abominable Sucker Punch, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
Let's hope Nolan somehow prevents Snyder from including those awfully out-of-place musical montages and embarrassingly clumsy sex scenes he loves so much. -
I agree. Just something devious in that mug. The shots of him from Comic Con looking Clark-ish looked alright, aside from the "too much hair" comments(a comment I never hear anymore, sadly!). And again with the Spalding Factory Costume...but at least with Supes it's plausible alien material.
-
So, the mood of the shot is cool. It definitely invokes the real old classic Superman comics and the Fleischer cartoons and that is fun. But what's up with the gridded texture on the costume that was started with Raimi's Spider-Man? It worked there. But here, with the molded emblem and sculpted looking cape... I don't know. Not going to scream hate, but I don't like it. Feels like they are trying to hard to make Superman "cool." I know it seems overly bright by comparison, but when I see that Chris Reeve Superman on the same page. I know which one makes me smile. Not the Spidey-style Supes costume. Jim. That is not a bad outfit.
-
Now that is what I am talking about!!!!
-

And one more thing...I honestly don't care what they do in this one

hair swept to the wrong side (again) and i dont see no curl
by cartmanez.
supes hair should be on the other side!
Clark has it parted to his left...Superman to the right -
The colors just look incredibly muted, just like the Returns costume did. It's as if they're afraid to make the red and blue too bright, as if that would make it corny or something, I don't know.
Also, after seeing the pictures of him as Clark Kent, why should his hair look different here? Just my first impressions. -
The smooth and pristine Reeve costume is gone. This is an improvement.
-
It's horrible. Too dark, what's with the scales all over it and the weird effect at the cuffs ? It looks like just another rubber movie suit. At least the cape looks like cloth again, unlike Singer's version. But, no. This is horrible.
-
Can they? Will they? They don't want to be compared to the old movies? it's still Superman, the comparison is inevitable.
-

i am afraid though that snider´s addiction to mediocre CGI will be very visible in this movie the guy can´t take a dump without CGI
by batmexican
-
Hey, I like all the Superman movies...although IV was pretty weak.
That said, this particular image just looks wrong. He doesn't look heroic...kind of evil, actually. -
Maybe it's the lighting.
Let's hope that's where the comparisons end though, because Sucker Punch is probably one of the worst movies I ever had to sit through in a movie theater. The atmosphere in that auditorium got so bad that people were actually heckling the movie screen, while others just walked out; never experienced that before. -
didn't see that coming...
-
And it looked like some kind of like button and an ignore. Holy crap.
-
It's faithful enough to the original. Now is it the same red color that was used in returns or is it because of the lighting?
-
Seriously, this looks like it might be the most badass Superman ever. Maybe he'll even act like a real person with fucking emotions for a change. Really glad they got rid of the dumb spit-curl in this version, too - it's not like you see that shit in the comics.
-
Aug 04, 2011 9:10:37 AM CDT
the S looks very Action Comics to me... which is GREAT!
by mysterious_volvo
-
Colour me intrigued. Also, don't mind the costume. I never understand why fanboys get bent out of shape over the slightest changes in design. It may as well be the original Reeves costume for all I care, it's still a superman costume.

Yeah what's with all the basketball texture to superhero costumes
by skycrapper_deuce
They are taking a step back in that department, it doesn't look good.
-
...with a receding hairline.
This is gonna be awesome. -
It's been that way since Spider-Man.
I think Hollywood designers just like to overdo everything. -
Around the time when he was reborn after Doomsday he had long hair.
-
exactly....
-
But expect some cheesy cover songs that make some kind of "ironic" statment. Maybe Katy Perry singing "UP Up and away in my beautiful balloon" as we first see Superman fly in the film. Or maybe a Kayne West version of Hall and Oates Maneater as Lois Lane struts on screen.
-
He looked the part, but did very little else. Mediocre at best.

what's known about that?
-
Aside from the overly coiffed hair, I'm impressed. The cape looks way to long though. However, seeing the simple elegance of the Reeve costume in the same post and one realizes how much unneeded texture we've seen in the last decade of super-hero costumes. From Ma Kent to Peter Parker, how could someone with access to "normal" everyday materials make those costumes.

TOO DAMN BUSY. Batman looks like a damn cyborg and Superman looks like he is wearing a bedazzled suit inside out
-
Rubbery suit makes him look like a blue and red condom. Why is his hand bulging? nah that ain't Supes. Fuck off Hack Snyder.
-
Than the Cavill guy.
-
superman represents the best of us...the light...he's not supposed to be "cool" or "complex" like batman...plus hes got heart and soul...something snyder has yet to reproduce on the screen.
-
I'm looking forward to this.
-
not quite sold on the "scales" texture of the whole thing... and the cape is obviously just for the picture. If the real cape was that long, it would drag 4 feet behind him on the ground. I also heard Spuds McKenzie has been cast as Krypto!
-
Aug 04, 2011 9:17:48 AM CDT
He's doing more in this picture than in all of Superman Returns.
by whatevillurks
-
It's no bigger then batmans cape.
-
I rather like the retro-S shield, and the cape seems, OK, but are we too hip and modern for a more optimistic blue now? The color scheme keeps going darker...its almost black and red. It reminds me of Ultraman from The Crime Syndicate.
-
Aug 04, 2011 9:19:27 AM CDT
yeah it looks liek Snyder because it looks like fake CGI
by fleshmachine
dawn of the dead remake was the only thing he did that was any fun.
-
Bright colorful spandex superhero costumes have always posed a problem on film. Easy to draw on the page, but hard to adapt for live action. Christopher Reeve fucking sold his spandex outfit because he was a rare talent -- that costume itself is very silly looking. It's quite possible that no living actor today could sell that costume (I know Brandon Routh sure as hell couldn't). Mesh outfits have the advantage of not looking silly, and they add visual interest to the costume in close-ups when the image is blown up to a 40 foot screen.
-
"Darker, more texture."

-
So when he shifts from Clark to Supes, apparently his alien hair follicles secrete some sort of greasy goo to hold that mountain of hair in place?
And why must every on-screen superhero these days shop at the same Scales Galore boutique as the King of the Seas?
In other words, this film won't be anything special; and the multiple "stories" in too short a timeframe smacks of the usual overbearing geek-media hype. Same shit, different day.
*yawn* -
looks really generic. Remember the guy who did that awsome Batman vs Predator short??? He also did a Superman vs Batman fan trailer and had a generic, square jawed, muscle head play Supes (badly btw), kinda looks like that. Not a lot of personality coming through...
-
Dude looks pissed. Maybe he wants his hairline back to normal.

I feel like the texture thing is a result of HDTV, Blu Ray, digital projection, IMAX...
by spacehog
We want to brag, even just to ourselves, about how SHARP that crazy texture on the Superman costume is on our home setup. Costume designers, set decorators, they all pop in a Blu Ray of some film they worked on and think it looks a little bland, a little empty. ''Should've used that busier wallpaper in that cafe scene,'' they think.
Doesn't especially bother me, but I think the fact that we can see so much more detail in movies these days means the industry is trying to up the ante.
As for Superman here, I think having the texture on the S shield is kind of weird, but it's still clearly Superman, so whatever. The script is really the only thing that's going to make or break this for me. -
I think he's one of the few guys who can really work with CGI instead of having it work against him. He has a weird way of making everything meet in the middle. Real things look faker in his movies and so the fake things intrigrate better. I always believe his characters are really in these worlds and not just standing in front of screen.
-
You are dumb as fuck.
It's a FUCKING PROMOTIONAL SHOT. It doesn't necessarily represent the entire plot of the fucking film.
It's supposed to be an iconic shot of Superman, reflecting the 40s and showcasing his power.
My god the level of stupidity on this forum is fucking astounding.
And the rest of the nitpickers should just drink Drano...
-
Seriously, is Supes costume made of snake skin?

Brave and Bold... How many years?
-
I just hope this film is engaging on an emotional level. Dawn of the Dead (the last half), 300, and Sucker Punch all got to a point for me where they just became tedious and dull due to either a lack of plot, or real character motivation. Nicely choreographed and shot action scenes that went nowhere.
-
I don't mind Supermen with different body types. This guy looks kind of like the Curt Swan superman... very stocky.
-

Uh, dude, "indigo" is sort of a dark blue-violet...
by has_snyder_been_fired_from_superman_yet
...technically, there's a little red in it. You meant "maroon and blue".
-
I don't mind it so much on the S-shield, but they should really take the texture off the blue parts. The blue should be matte.
I really dig the new S-shield design. As some have mentioned, it's very Fleischer-esque and I'm glad they didn't try to make it more slick or futuristic like Singer did in SR.
The only thing besides the texture that bugs me is the missing curl. All that hair wouldn't stick out so much if there was the trademark curl to focus on. Other than that though, I really really like this pic. I can't wait to see Snyder and Nolan's finished product. -

My favorite Saturday Night Live cast member? In this case, BILL HATER.
by greggers
I can understand that they had to make Superman look like a bad-ass, because that's the world we're living in now. (I'm almost surprised that they didn't reach for the *angry red glowing eyes* cliche that you find on the cover of every third Superman comic book since 1996.) For Superman to be an appealing hero to today's 18-34s, he must represent a more down-to-earth anger instead of hope and fun and all that gay stuff. I get that.
But the straw that's breaking the camel's back and making me cringe is that stupid texture. It's as though the only way to soften the effect of a human wearing tights is to add a funky texture. Is it suddenly more like clothing that way? Safer? When I see it, I see a a person making the decision to go with it, like an executive or hacky costume designer, and my eyes reflexively roll.
But at the end of the day, I have to realize that I'm a grown man. I had my Superman. When I was 8. He's represented in that toy advertisement at the bottom of the story. That was my time to enjoy the character.
I now leave Superman for the rest of you. -
I'd say the opening sequence of Sucker Punch would be the best scene in a film this year. That terribly overdone music choice kind of kills the scene for me.
-
That's silver age / earth 2 superman logo!
Love it!

but hey, we don't know what kryptonians sweat when they have torn open a large safe. for. some. reason.
-
I love the Chris Reeves movies, but yeah.. on Blu-Ray, in certain shots, the suit looks laughably cheap.. you can see it bunch up around his knees, see the top of his boots flopping around, stray fibers sticking out of the arms, etc.
The texture helps sell the concept and makes it look better. It's a bit too pronounced here... it should be more for closeups. -
only way this will work. Hopefully, that's why they got Zack Snyder. The idea of him handling a grounded-in-reality idea from Christopher Nolan has me a-scared...
-
It does look better than the crap that Jim Lee is drawing, but he better have the red shorts. I think it has potential. Much better than those Spiderman pics that EW showed last week.
-
Don't like that textured scaly look at all. It worked for Spiderman, it doesn't work for supes, and I can't quite put my finger on why. Maybe it's just 80 years of seeing him in a "smooth" outfit. Either way, this just looks wrong wrong wrong...
-
the use of the WHERE IS MY MIND was excellent too..when i first heard the song i barely recognized it and this is coming from a man who's seen the pixies four times.

spacehog...word. focus on the script and the rest can be accepted
by nuprin
-
I can see the effort involved. I don't like being able to see an actor trying.
-
I'm less troubled by the texturing, the light needs to land on something interesting for the glare of blu-ray, than by the details that are peeking out. As someone else noted, there seems to be a pad of red....something..... on the outside of his right thigh. And the bunched fabric at the wrists are actually a pair of wristband looking things that are slightly darker than the sleeve. A little bit of Batman-type armor going on? Why?
-

-
I like the texture of the costume, that looks cool.
I like the texture of spideys new costume even more. -
Anyway, like we've all said multiple times, it will all come down to the execution, script, etc.
Which is why I'm not all that confident that Snyder can pull off anything past the visuals, which he has down.
BTW, now that it's confirmed that we'll have an older looking-Curt Swan type-Silver Age-ish Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane makes a LOT more sense. -
Just reminds me of Fight Club, a film that had a great visual/editing style that backed it up with a great script. But that did work better than hearing Sweet Dreams used by someone for the one billionth time.

I didn't find anything lacking in the plot or motivations of the main characters. I could've used a few more moments with the girls bonding, but they did all have their own personalities and reasons for their actions.

and I don't think Snyder will shove endless pop songs in Superman
by spandau belly
I could be wrong, but I think he'll probably go for just a score with few pre-recorded songs.
Watchmen and Suckerpunch were about pop culture deconstruction and distillation, so I think that's why he felt the need to fill those films with recognizeable songs. -

Nice job on the emo coloring on the suit, morons. It didn't work last time and it doesn't work this time. Superman's suit is not midnight blue with a purple cape; it's blue and red like the suit on the freaking Christopher Reeve doll. Nobody wants an "edgy and dark" Superman movie. Nobody. There is still time to fix this before you screw it up and bury your tentpole franchise for another decade ... do it.

Honestly, it's all of those things, yet it's something I can't yet figure out. It's NOT bad, but it doesn't feel very much like Superman.
Maybe, based on what little I can gather from one pic, it just doesn't feel believable enough. I don't quite buy that he's Superman. He just looks like Cavil in a Halloween costume and in bad need of a haircut.
Marvel's movies, however bizarre their worlds are, seem to feel grounded in reality - at least as far as these things go. Same thing with Nolan's TDK. The crap Batman & Thor do are totally unbelievable, yet you buy in in the context. This feels somehow more surreal. ATM, I have a hard time imagining a context in which this would feel believable.
Maybe that's what it is. Maybe I'm having a hard time buying into this pic because there's no context.
BTW: I didn't say it in the other thread, but Fishburne is a lousy choice for Perry. Not because he's black, although a little more faithfulness to the source would be appreciated. Fishburne is just way past his prime, if ever such a moment existed. He's hammy.
Fishburne was at his best when nobody knew or cared who he was. Great in Matrix 1. Great in Deep Cover. Actually fairly memorable in Nightmare on Elm Street 3. Cowboy Curtis, how could we ever forget you? Everything AFTER Matrix 2 has been downhill for him. Not just because of the roles, but because his delivery. He was the one thing that nearly ruined Mystic River for me. His acting was so bad. Perry White won't likely be a huge role, but I'd rather somebody less ham-fisted in there. -

My comment if it was too stupid for you was meerly reflecting my fears as to the plot of this movie I wasn´t confirming he was gonna stop a bank heist. I see him in front of a bank vault i think bank heist scene... You inbred FUCK!
and as to the promotional iconic 40´s inspired shot you suggest, there is nothing Iconic about a CGI background low lit worst superhero costume texture since Snyder´s Night Owl. The superman doll looks more Iconic than that picture, If it were Spawn you were trying to depict instead of sups than it would be appropriate to call it iconic due to the dark nature of the character. This is Superman in 2012 not 1940´s. Stop it with the Nostalgia you old nostalgic nurf! move on. -
I am so happy with the subdued colors like in Superman Returns. I think bright colors would look corny and cheesy in this day and age. I like the S symbol and the boots and the cape, a very retro 40s look!
Bring on the movie!! -

He's too British-looking. It's Jane Austen's Superman. He puts on his glasses and becomes Mr. Darcy.

Cape is red not purple (think folks comp screens are screwed)
The insignia looks great.
We've had 30 years of nice and pleasant supes now it's time for an edgier turn to reflect the world we live in. Nolan's people have written this remember. Nolan is producing. It's not going to be an out and out fun time. This will be good and I now see why The Avengers is rushed. Marvel are bricking it.........maybe ;) -

but I can't really get a good read on the costume. This is the best picture they could come with? Let's see him out in the daylight ffs.

You guys had the chance to support my casting of Armie Hammer.
You didn't, now you have thus.

Also -- cheap looking backdrop.
Also -- basketball textured suit. -
Don't like the hair, don't like the material, the shield is too big...but the cape and boots are faboo! I guess we'll see how this goes.
-
Yeah, it's time for the new Supes for the pre-teens, because the world's a TERRIBLE place.
-
You said it. I know it's early, but I have very little confidence in ASM. This, however, I'm more likely to indulge because I like Snyder, and I think they're trying to make this a good action movie that satisfies fans. I don't necessarily dig the suit, but I'm glad to see Supes in action again.

An "edgier and darker" snakeskin Superman suit minus the red trunks.
by thanos0145
This costume looks like shit. How the fuck can you believe this could be concealed by wearing a three piece suit.
Make fun of the spandex Superman suit all you want, but it translated well to the big screen. -
Warners have just made a shit load of money from Potter - that's before blu-ray, DVD and boxsets and other merchandise.
Green Lantern is paid for and written off no worries, and Batman is going to swell the coffers even more next year. -
That's all.
-
Looks good!
-
I thought the film wasn't suppose to shoot until October? If so, this is just test footage/publicity stuff that wont be in the movie.
Also, I saw an interview where Cavill said he was about to go to the gym and get "ripped" as he is now on 5,000 a day calorie diet. -

While I like the composition of the image and the idea behind it, It's hard to get a real feel for the look of the costume. (granted, that may be why the darker lighting and hunched over pose..as a teaser)
That cape alone looks like it weighs a ton. Want to see it in normal lighting in a more traditional hero pose. -
Ok, ok, ok!..I'm just kiddin. Sheesh!

by emperor_was_a_jerk
Can we talk about the most important part of this story? Ain't it Cool is now being scooped by Twitter posts of people who have a show on the Howard Stern channel... on satellite radio.
I love this site but woah... it may be time to up your game. Re-commit to bringing us awesome news and scoops FIRST. You have it in you! You can do it!
And yeah, costume is fine. A guy with dark hair in a blue suit with a big "S" on the chest and a cape. Yep, it's Superman. -
Looks like John Travolta's haircut in Staying Alive AND Saturday Night Fever. He actually looks like John Travolta in both. Please make this a good movie.
-
This is beginning to look depressing. Really. While Singer's Supes was a letdown as a movie, Brandon Routh was awesome. The fact that this suit, though closer in color to the normal outfit, has the pattern in it, reminds me of Singer and Routh even more.
Cavill hasn't got the physique, and he has way too much hair.
This is like the Superman touring show, not Superman: the movie. -
Aug 04, 2011 10:10:28 AM CDT

I can't believe nobody said anything about the fact that he's standing in front of what looks like the door to a safe which is destroyed.
The costume looks cool, I personally like the idea that costume designers are using textures more instead of simple spandex, which doesn't really translate well on camera. I also like the slight touches like the cuffs they added to his sleeves.
What I continually find confusing though, is all the lip service to the Donner/Christoper Reeve Superman... I mean seriously if I hear "will you believe a man can fly" one more time in reference to Superman I'm going to barf.. it was a great marketing tagline for the 70s, but its kinda stupid to hear now.
-
Friggin' Awesome if you ask me. When we first saw the Brandon Routh suit my first impressions were meh. This however is soooo much better. Okay, so Supes fro is a bit Elvis, but this man looks like he can leap tall buildings, etc.
-
Sorry, but he does...
The hair...awful...
The suit, its just wrong in so many ways, making it shiny FFS!!!
Sleeves that don't fit????
The cape even with him hunched over seems too long.
It seems they got the hair the wrong way around, the Clark pics have the Supes curl but the Supes pics just look like the models you get in the hairdressers (80's from hell)
Chris Reeve and directors showed you could use a simple costume in keeping with the comic and still have a powerful character.
I await with the fear of a bad job, Green Lantern did a so so job but Cap America nailed it about right for most of it.
Can Snyder reinvent the role immortalised by Chris, its a tough call, Brandon was a damn good go but sadly the story was poop.
Henry looks more villain than hero.. -

I just watched a bunch of clips of Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies
by autodidact
There was a lot of good shit in there. Lots of cheese but overall they got all the elements of the real core Spider-Man mythos in there in some form. That kind of good faith is all you can really ask of filmmakers doing this type of adaptation.
-
I agree that pictures were less than impressive, but I actually ended up thinking it looked really great in the film itself. The muted red really made the blue pop in a kind of fantastic way, and the cape's shape and movement gave the suit an air of regalness, which I always felt supes outfit should have.
That said, think this one looks like it could be good too. Honestly the biggest question mark of this films, obviously, is going to be Snyder. Watchmen and Sucker Punch, everything looked great, pics, trailers, casting, until i actually saw the films. I imagine this will be the same. That cape looks exactly like the ones from 300 btw (neither good nor bad, just an observation). -
Exactly!!! Haters gonna hate. I love it. It reminds me of Fleischer's tone and George Reeves costume. Fucking awesome.
-
AKA a four dump-a-day diet.
-
Funny, I was going to say the opposite. I was never one of those crazy 'Welling should be the next Superman' types, but he looked way better than this. Far more heroic and Super.
And how exactly was Singer's costume 'sexualised'?? Because you could see his junk? Show me any Superman costume where that isn't an issue. One of the things I loved about Routh and his look, which I admit is not to everyone's taste, was his occasional cold, alien look (particularly emphasized in that recent clip). This guy looks like a douchebag on 'roids. I have a hard time imagining him as Clark Kent, even with those other recent shots. -
That is the gayest thing i've ever seen

Superman's trunks should be very *trunks* like, and not look like they were designed by Calvin Klein, to be worn by Kate Moss.

Didn't say it's terrible but all the posts in this thread scream happiness and joy.

Apart from the tired texture, this looks about as good as it possibly could. Well done.
by kevred
Someone's got everyone convinced that a highly texturized set of tights is more plausible than non-texturized tights. When I see things like that, I start to feel like the film is apologizing for being what it is. The recent Marvel Studios (Avengers-related) films seem to do the least of this, and I hope it catches on.
But the red, yellow and blue look like red, yellow and blue, all the essential Superman costume shapes are there - IMPORTANTLY, without the sort of stupid stylization we're seeing with Spidey - and the guy looks like Superman. I can't imagine Hollywood doing a better job than what we see here.
In a couple days, I've gone from being skeptical about this thing to being impressed with what I see and wanting it to succeed. We could really use a successful Superman film - it would be great to have that in this cynical world we're in now. -
I'm thinking they might go with a design that doesn't have the red trunks, but some red outer hip-thigh padding?
-
I think it looks fine. Still waiting to see a full standing posed shot though.

why does he have the old school Earth 2 chest emblem? Can we have his cousin Power Girl show up too?
-
I'm sorry but that doesn't look like Superman to me.
-
Looks like he might have some kind of design on the outsides of this thighs, so I'll reserve complete judgement until we see more of it. It reminds me of all of those early shots of Spidey that have been released that purposefully hide or de-emphasize the changes to the costume.
Still, Caville looks great and the costume is impressive. -
In this age of 3D movies and Blu Ray videos you have to have texture to these costumes.
-
The emo, coming to grips with his sexuality director and the terrible script were the problems with Superman Returns. They turned the most inspiring fictional character in the last 100 years and turned him into a whiny, emo stalker who also happened to be a deadbeat dad. It would be the same as turning Batman into a guy who's favorite hobby is watching Glee in his spare time; it made no sense and showed the production team had no sense of the character. For someone who made such a big deal out of being a fan of the Christopher Reeve films, he apparently never saw them because his remake was nothing like them.
On the otherhand, Routh was terrific. He was about as close to Reeve's Clark Kent as anyone could hope for. -

What's up with the scaly look of the costume and the armor like appearance of the S shield? This dude is bullet proof, he doesn't need that thick of costume.
-
I suspect he doesn't have the red boxers but no big deal. The texture of the costume is goofy but at least they didn't totally fuck it up.
-
The day has come! They've released a bad-ass photo of the new Superman and I must say I am impressed and greatly relieved! I remember that dark day the first Routh shot was published and how sickened I was at the sight. (not to mention the abysmal movie). Looks like they are rockin' a 30's-40's Max Fleischer look here for the most part. And guess what? The damn "S" on his chest is bigger than a sandwich plate this time around! Dig the boots too, very classic. Can NOT wait til the movie comes out.
-
not crazy about the chicken skin texture, but it still is 10.000 times better than the new spider-man costumen..
-
i'm confused. Is Snyder remaking Superman III?
Because the colors of this costume look like the 'evil' version in the junkyard scene, and looking at the expression on this guy's face makes me feel like i'm about to be raped. Seriously.
i'm fine with textures and muted colors, but this is too much in both departments.
It's exactly what i expected. i remain hopeful about being pleasantly surprised. But my faith remains at zero. -
no bad though, I dig the "S" design

-
red briefs or no?
-
there's an oil slick on his head!!!
-
There has to be a better solution than the textured fabric and de-saturated colors.
-
your ability to glean all that from a single, out of context image is astounding
maybe he's about to rape Luthor, huh? -
Retro S - like
Mood/style of the shot - like
Badass Superman - like. For those of you saying he looks like a villain, do you realize that Superman looks angry in the comics quite frequently? Do you think he smiles when a villain pounds on him? Superman is upright and optimistic, not eternally happy-go-lucky. If you want historical proof, go look at the art in the Death of Superman run, paying special attention to his expression the last time he flies off to fight Doomsday. He has a definite "bitch gonna die" look on his face.
Suit texture - weird, not sold on this. Hopefully it'll look different/better in motion. The odd thing is the cape looks to be normal fabric. If you're making the case that an alien fabric would be different, why make ONLY the cape look Earth-y?
I get the concern that Snyder won't produce a Superman with heart, but to answer that I look to his portrayal of Nite Owl II in Watchmen. I know there's lots of disagreement about that movie, but it really makes you feel for him. Part of that was Patrick Wilson, but at least some credit has to go to the director.
Overall, nice job.

What are the odds that we'll get a Supes film with the proper tone of innocence/hope/goodness to it?
by kevred
The way I see it, the challenge for the Nolans is not to make a Superman film that carries the dark, self-aware cynicism of today. The challenge is to make a film that *acknowledges* the tone of today without *conceding* to that tone.
It's why Supes has always been the hardest to do right. Batman is easy - dark, brooding, blah blah. It could be done a dozen different ways from how Nolan's doing it and still work.
But Supes is this big, iconic, brightly-colored ball of innocence and purity. He can't be cynical, can't be streetwise, can't be ironic, can't be an anti-hero, can't be all the things that storytellers have relied on as cheap crutches for the last few decades.
Look at the original two Superman films. They came out during a somewhat cynical and culturally confused time, a time when American exceptionalism had fallen apart, "hidden" American subcultures were coming into the light, and the world was getting to be a less comforting, messy place.
But they managed to reflect that while still making Supes the shining beacon at the center of everything. Something that everyone could look to and rally around, a symbol of transcending our petty struggles.
Do we really think we're beyind that now, that we somehow have outgrown that need? Woe to the filmmaker who thinks so, because they will be missing the only critical target, and their film will fail.
Superman cannot be Dark Knighted. That is not what people want from Superman. It's hope, or it's nothing.
This is the razor's edge that this film is walking. I hope they nail it, because we can use it. But it's far tougher than getting a costume right. -
no thanks. imo, the colors need to be brighter.
this reminds me of the kryptonite infected superman from superman III -
I feel like that belt will look a bit odd and out of place.

I am not a hater and I am really pulling for this film, but my first impression of this pic was fairly neutral.
My hope was that when I first saw Snyder's interpretation of the outfit I'd say "Yup... they got it" but I didn't.
I can't quite put my finger on it, and perhaps it's just hard to tell because much of Cavill is in shadow so perhaps I just need to see the costume in better lighting. The pose certainly look Superman-like, so I think Cavill looks the part.
I have come the the conclusion that it is very hard to develop a superhero outfit for TV or film. The current trend is to add texture and muted colours - which I am not sure is always the best choice... although the super smooth spandex with bright primary colours can be just as wrong. Not only that, but costume designers also have to balance what was illustrated in a comic book and what is practical in the "real world." Add to this the watchful, judgmental eye of the fan base and you have a near impossible task.
I'd like to see other shots of this outfit before I make up my mind.
-
Exactly my thoughts. By the lighting on the floor it also appears he could have been knocked down into a vault and interrupted a heist. He staggers up and glares at the thieves (shutter snap).... Worst luck ever, hahahaha. I can't friggin wait for this movie!!!

Supes should be the last person you would like to fuck with, without all the poser bullshit of Batman and Wolverine. (Although I like them too.) He doesn't have to try to look scary, because the guy has to actually put effort into not destroying his environment (including you). This looks perfect. Badass, without trying to be.

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem with Routh's Superman. You could see his knob bulging out in practically every full-body shot of him. This wasn't a problem for Reeve's costume, though – his Superman underwear was larger and seemed to mesh well with the bodysuit, but Routh's is small, skimpy and tight; the shadow that seems to form under and accentuate his bulge doesn't help matters. It's even worse in the deleted opening scene, where he looks almost naked. Of course, I don't blame Routh for that – Singer's the one who inserts homoerotic undertones into his adaptations. I still haven't forgiven him for what he did to Apt Pupil.

Batmans cape looks like cheap felt, cgi it all the time if needs be, just sort it out. -
Looks crap and Cavill looks nothing like a superman should. Routh was a far better choice.
Hate the S, looks like its sticking out too much. -
Kevred got it right, I think, saying--
He can't be cynical, can't be streetwise, can't be ironic, can't be an anti-hero, can't be all the things that storytellers have relied on as cheap crutches for the last few decades.
Maybe I'm influenced by having seen Captain America again last night, but there, I think, is your proof--it CAN be done. Will it is another question we'll all need to wait too long for.
More significantly though (not really)--WHAT'S WITH THE LENGTH OF THE CAPE??? Did you take a look at that thing? It's more like the train on a wedding dress than it is a proper cape. Too short is no good, but this is just stupid long!

Unlike in Superman Returns. But still the shot here is all dark and washed-out looking. Look at how bright the colors are with the Reeve Superman. I remember how vivid and bold those colors looked on the movie screen when I was a kid. Superman should be luminous, not gray and watery.
The actor looks the part well enough, I think, though I have no idea if he can act. -
Not because he's a bad actor. He's actually fairly solid in everything I've seen him in. No. The problem with Routh was that he wasn't pretending to be Clark Kent. He was pretending to be Christopher Reeve pretending to be Clark Kent. The same thing goes for Spacey too. He was playing Gene Hackman playing Lex. I don't think that this is all their fault. A large part of that blame goes to Singer, who essentially insisted that this be a direct sequel, albeit 20 years late.
The fundamental problems with Superman Returns were pretty basic.
1. It essentially repeated the plot of Lex and a sleazy real estate scheme, which is totallly NOT post-crisis Lex. The only versions of the character that nailed it were Michael Rosenbaum's Lex on Smallville and Clancy Brown's Lex on the animated series. Lex is formidable and much smarter than Clark. Here, he was presented as being a con man and grifter.
2. There was no physical match for Superman either. This is an action movie. Give us Doomsday. Give us Metallo. Give us Zod. Give us any one of his powerhouse baddies. Don't give us puny humans and distractions. Superman is practically a god compared to norms. He needs an equally godlike foe.
3. Damnit! You showed us all of the money shots in the trailers. How cool would that bullet to the eye have looked if you had never seen it before walking into the theater? There were no surprises in this movie.
4. Super baby? REALLY!?! First off, don't even get me started on the procreation issue. Kryptonian and human DNA? Not likely. On top of that, it painted Clark/Supes as a deadbeat dad. As if nobody (read: Marsden) would ever put together that Lois' kid was Superman's? Plus, how creepy was it having Superman watch over his kid while he slept? *shivers*
5. Lopsided VFX. We all know about this one. That plane scene, also rehashed, only looked marginally better than the awful looking one done for the Smallville finale. How bad was that?
6. Bosworth is cute, but she's no Lois.
7. Boring. I get that they were trying to emulate the 70s and 80s movies, but they went too far. 70s and 80s movies were slow movers, but there was usually a method to that madness. The plots tended to progress organically and support character development. Everything felt shallow here. It was slow without any real payoff.
We all complain about Ratner and X3, but it never pretended to be anything more than popcorn schlock. It paid off exactly what it promised, mindless mutant antics. Was it better than Singer's X-Men movies? No. Was it the abortion some of you claim? Hardly. It wasn't great, but it was certainly no Catwoman or Batman & Robin.
In Superman Returns, Singer fancied himself as being equal to Donner. He wasn't. Given the choice between X3 and Superman Returns, I'd choose X3.
X3 was the so-so looking girl who was grateful just to be asked out and would probably put out because of it. Superman Returns was the cheerleader who wasn't nearly as hot as thought, yet somehow got away with being the cocktease. Mediocre looking and a little too willing to please VS hotter, but locked at the knees. That's X3 vs SR in a nutshell. One puts out, but is clumsy about it. The other teases profusely, all while tightening the lock on her chastity belt. -
That's just not right.
Other than that it looks fine, but does seem a bit dark (material or just the lighting in this pic?) And plastic-y, kind of like Thor's costume looked. I didn't have a problem with Thor's in the actual film just in early photos, so I guess the same will apply here.
But he needs that curl, that is just a part of the character, isn't it? -

As I recall hearing it, Snyder said that WB is going to reboot Batman as something Superman compatible, but that it was not HIS Superman it was going to be compatible with, but another film version. Yes, it does sound confusing, but that is the way I remember hearing it. Always trust WB to do something that makes no sense when it comes to their DC franchises though.
-
Please make sure it's there, Snyder. Please? That's all I ask. I like it there. It looks more...regal?
I'll forgive you for making this Superman look like a fucking basketball and making the chest "S" diamond fat and bloated as long as you do that one simple thing: put the yellow S where it's supposed to be. -
needed to direct a mass market, big budget blockbuster.
He certainly knows how to paint a pretty picture but nothing that I've seen of his has shown me that he understands how to use actors/characters... they're really more like props. And frankly, I wasn't impressed with any of the action sequences in Sucker Punch... while they were beautiful visually, they weren't shot/cut in a way to induce any sort of emotion/tension. There's nothing positive I can say about that film other than maybe that parts of it were pretty. He really hasn't shown me that he's worthy of a major, iconic property like Superman.
I want to see a great Superman flick and I wish him all the luck in the world, but unless the Goyer/Nolan story/script is phenomenal or unless he's been hiding some significant directing skills from us all this time, my expectations are going to be pretty low. -
I don't know man, you noticing Routh's 'knob' constantly says more about you than it does about Singer. I didn't really pay attention to Superman's junk in that movie. But then again homophobes who are obsessed with men's crotches are always going to go off on Singer's gayness as if it had anything to with his directing choices. I'm so sick of that kind of prejudice. Mr. Testosterone, Zack Snyder, had way more homoeroticism in 300 than Singer did in Superman Returns. Or what about Dr. Manhattan's actual schlong in Watchmen? Did that bother you?

None of this desaturated Superman just walked out of a Hoovertown in some dustbowl during the Great Depression bullshit.
Superman should be a BEACON. Not a Black Hole. Just look at the Hot Toys figure for instant comparison. Forget that it was the great Christopher Reeve for a moment. That costume, that image of Superman is something to look up to and celebrate. Superman is a not a vigilante hiding in the shadows. He is Godlike. God, in any form, does not hide. Likewise, Superman is a savior figure. "They're a good people, Kal-El. They wish to be. They only like the LIGHT to show the way."
This new Superman costume is not the Light. Shame. -

Fucking absolutely idiotic not to use it.
Its one of the greatest character theme tunes ever composed.
They're trying to distance themselves from the older movies but THAT music transends those films.
Its the very reason Smallville used it. That music IS Superman.
Perfect example: When Hollywood did a gritty, realistic reboot of James Bond with Casino Royale, they still kept his theme tune.

It is difficult not to notice the male form considering how Singer lingers on it. I tried my best to ignore Routh's bulge, but the design of the costume and the way the film was shot made that very difficult. Maybe you don't mind it – good for you – but it's not my cup of tea, and I certainly don't think that makes me homophobic or homosexual. You brush aside Singer's gayness as though it had nothing to do with his films – on the contrary, I found that X-Men, Superman Returns and Apt Pupil were all infused with homoerotic subtext which was not present in the original works. As I said, Singer's not my cup of tea. Snyder is a much less talented director, and while I didn't care for all the greasy CG six-packs on slow-motion display in 300, at least they were from the source material rather than something the director decided to add for his own satisfaction. I didn't mind Doctor Manhattan's dick because of how understated it was – just like in the comic, it was never focused upon. Snyder got lots of little things right... pity about the important things, though.
-
While I do like the original image and it looks to me like there's more color than we saw in the last film, even more color does look better and more brave. Hopefully we will get some nice, well-lit color in this film.
-
But still... it was used. I would like to hear the Williams score homaged in the closing moments of Snyder's film, even if they do ditch it in favour of some Zimmer stuff for the bulk of the action.

Thanks for the supportive comments from a few folks. If this is what we believe, let's keep sharing it/encouraging it.
I hope the filmmakers feel this way, and even if they don't, it's probably too late to change anything now, but it never hurts to add to the tide of opinion.
I think that, overall, despite all the critiques offered here, what almost all of us want at the end of the day is a fun, inspiring, imaginative film that carries us away, excites us, and makes us feel like kids again.
That's a tough thing to pull of in this age of jaded irony. But with great filmmaking budgets and properties comes great responsibility, right? So it's fair for us to expect it. -

I am just tired of seeing superheroes in banks. what does superman do when he goes up in space and listens to all the chaos going on in the world? i mean he would be hearing numerous wars going on in the world Birma, Pakistan, Afganistan etc, he must hear thousands of people suffering from hunger, Dictaroships, diseases Natural disasters, what does he do he goes for a fucking bank heist in the middle of fucking metropolis, why bother showing us his capacity to hear everything at once if he is gonna help his neighborhood, superman isn´t a local hero he is a global entity he should have a condominium up in space full of Amazonian pussy where he could monitor the world, not waisting his time chasing tail in some local newspaper company, who the fuck reads newspapers these days? it was great in the 40´s maybe but now?

The texture makes it look too much as if it's a 'protective' suit
by supertoyslast
Which doesn't make sense with Superman since he doesn't need protecting. Although I guess the suit does have to be durable to withstand what Supes puts it through.
I just like the notion that Superman can wear something that's gossamer-thin without it getting damaged, either because it's alien tech which came with his ship or his superpowers strengthen anything which is close to his skin. -
wtf is wrong with those people.

Actually, for my money, Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad would've made a better Perry White. He's 17yrs older than Cavill so you know he can fit the authority figure role. Plus, he's more versatile than Fishburne, who (as I said) has turned hammy over the years.

Thor jsut called, he wants his cape back, and he wants it now!!
by arkhaminmate001
Watchmen pictures looked great, Sucker Punch pictures looked great, this picture looks great.
Snap shots don't make a movie though.
10 zillion dollars of SFX porn don't make a movie great, do they Transformers, we won't know if this is any good for almost 2 years.
Which is kind of a worry. -
...well, for a start the cape should appear raised at the shoulders, much like how Reeves' one was, also the machine textured suit is simply irresponsible. As for the hair and face NO
The face is not real, the hair is unnatural, all of which amounts to a significant weakness bubbling under the tightness of the costume. This is going to be almost as bad if not worse than superman returns - remember how people praised Ang Lee's Hulk after the that talentless, zero IQ director was hired to reboot it, well, the same thing will happen to Returns and Bryan Singer is rubbing his hands in great anticipation for Snyder to elevate the status of that sliding shitpole.
Snyder, if you're reading this, and I pray that you are. Superman is not some soldier out for vengence, nor is he some muscle bound brute that shit-kicks anyone out the way. Superman is about class, style, subtlety and the artistry involved with Clark morphing into Supes was never better done than in the opening of SupermanII Lester actually redeems himself just by the alley change shot - it is an absolute masterclass on how to present such an iconic and powerful character on the silver screen. You people think Snyder has this ability to deliver what Richard Lester did in several seconds - pump my prostate!! Not a single iota of magic-realism exists in any of Snyder's films - what is realistic magic you may ask, well, it is the art of superman, of course, something that was clearly absent in SReturns when compared to the first two Donner/Lester films, so much so I had to reach for the blue pill and erase the mind of such disturbing visual experiences. granted, Snider possesses film-making credentials, but he lacks all of thenecessary arstic integrity needed for Superman; just compare his films - nothing feels real in any of his products, filmakers ought to be realmakers, that is to say they are architects of visual fiction that must be delivered with uncompromising reality; Spielberg, Cameron, the Scott bros. Donner, amongst a select few others, all understand this, for it is the sole reason their earlier films seem so REAL, example? Take the scenes in the first two Superman motion pictures and compare it with not only the sacrilege thrown up in superman returns, but also many of Snyder's work - there are simply no people in his films; please let me explain Far too often directors - contemporary screenwriters are also guilty of this crime -neglect scenes of everyday life that add weight to realism, in favour of the main characters; it is gravely important that characters, especially those that belong in the comic book genre, are not overly concentrated on. Snyder and even Nolan do this time and time again. Okay Nolan gets away with it as Batman is less hyperbolic and sci-fi than the Man of Steel. But these f**king idiots better understand that in order to project a realistic and believable reincarnation of the MOS, other people aside from him and other main characters, also need to be shown and exist. Again, I draw whatever attention you have left during my rant, to the first two Superman films and you will see a clear reality incorporated in the pictures because people unrelated to the main plots were always used to deliver the realism needed. Furthermore, the transition or morphing from Clark Kent to the man of Steal is at its best in these films - consider Mr. Reeves shirt-ripping moment where the buttons are heard popping or diving out of the daily planet window in the first film I've already told you about my favorite alley change in the second film. One only has to watch these films again for the benchmark quality it preserves, so much so Sam - Spiderman - Raimi studied these films microscopically before engineering his own take on Peter Parker because he wanted to see how regular everyday folks and crowds are utilised to further cements in the reality needed for the superheroes to appear believable. Superman returns made me tea-bag the entire f**king auditorium and I'd say Singer go F*ck yourself, were it not for the Unusual Suspects and his 2 X-men films, where he clearly demonstrated what is needed, but lord knows why the f*ck he chose to ignore this artistic approach to Sreturns, but f*ck it. Point is these elements are important in order to bring the necessary magic and realism that Snyder has never brought into to his own work. If he can't do this, the rule is simple in its purity; if you can't create something that's not only better than good, but beyond the very best, expect to see me throw pieces of faeces at the cinema screen!!! -

@billy_d_williams : I'd have to agree with you. Snyder is overrated.
by rsanta74
300 was good, but doesn't bear repeat viewings. Watchmen is okay, but was overly long and poorly edited. Legend of the Guardians.... REALLY!?! Sucker Punch... I've heard so many bad things about it that I'm afraid to pop in the DVD. Looks like fanboy eye candy and not much more. (I'll pop it in tonight.)
Snyder is really coasting on that 300 cred. He's not all that.
Actually, I agree with the guy who said that Michael Bay would kick the shit out of this movie. This is the one case where big explosions and over the top Armageddon style antics is totally called for. Superman doesn't need the pseudo bullet time crap that Snyder loves. He needs bombast and near WWE melodrama. Bay can bring all of that and even a little nice character stuff, again Armageddon. -
looks good untill you get a closer look and see the suit captain america usually wears in the comics, I hated it on Spidey, and it looks even worse on supes.
-
Yes, it was used for the end credits. So your example actually sucks.
Also..."Hollywood" did not make Casino Royale. -
But it is just a still photo. The "S" looks cool, more like it did in the 30's. It strikes me as funny that filmmakers in the 70's had more guts to make costumes that looked like their counterparts in the comics, since those comics had been successful for decades, why wouldn't you? I am really sick of that textured look to super-hero costumes. Even the "S" is textured. So bizarre that people in the 'Wood are practically determined to fuck shit up. I will say that Cavill looks good as Supes.

This photo looks very Snyder-y and the texture on the costume fits that. The only thing I don't really like is his hair lol.
-
Yes, all the covers in Sucker Punch were terrible and lame. Watchmen featured some of the plainest, most boring music choices for a flick that really should have been able to have some fun with it, but it was like he couldn't be bothered to dig deeper than the top 5 tracks for whichever period the particular storyline happened to be covering. And Legends of the Guardian had the wholly out of place music montage by Owl City.
But this flick will probably be all score, and is probably safe from having to be exposed to Snyder's limited and shallow music taste. -
Didn't Zack Snyder watch "Unbreakable"? Characters drawn with big heads almost always are the villains. Remember Samuel Jackson's Mr. Glass? His hair was enlarged to identify him as the bad guy. They need to fix the hair.
Also, Superman doesn't slick his hair back. He parts it to the side. Looks like a douche with his hair slicked back. -
Just those pics of his toy above bring a tear to the eye. He WAS Superman. One of the best casting choices in movie history.

For all his other flaws, the guy does have the ability to capture a sort of epic-ness, a grandiose scale, a visual scope and gravity that almost no one else does. And he does it in a way that doesn't paint the entire image in a murky, soft CGI'd haze. I like the effects results he's gotten in Transformers better than the effects results that Snyder has gotten.
If only there was a way to combine Bay's technical ability with actual good storytelling and a film that made a lick of sense. Some might say the answer to that is James Cameron, I don't know. -
...and product. A matted down Superman hair showing he's sweating and been putting up a fight would look way better.
-
if their idea of making Superman more relevant for a modern world is just to make everything "darker" and "edgier"(which seems to be what this picture is trying to project) - then they have already failed.
I'm not a hater. I think Henry Cavill looks fine - and I realise this is only one picture - but Superman is not supposed to be a Watchman. -
you mean the horrible shot of him running and changing with a big blur? Richard Lester is a tool and never should have been let anywhere near superman. Give me Donner any day of the week over that fool.

Well,I somewhat digress.
I thought it was a good choice when zac added Cash's when the man comes around during the intro of DOTD and Disturbed's Sickness at the end credits.
But you may be right about that damn Hallujah song in Watchmen. There also was an unintentionally funny scene wheras The Comedian is shooting rubber bullets at prostestors with KC and the Sunshine Band's Boogie Man playing in the background.
However, Powerman 5000 should sue Snyder's ass for wasting their song/lyrics, Army of Me on a shitty film like Sucker Punch.
With Zac's music choices, it's either heads or tails.(Good or Worst.) -
Thank you for admitting, in no uncertain terms, that you thought there would be a bank heist in this film.
That's what your insanely idiotic initial post indicated, what I called you on, and what you tried to dodge.
If it's too hard for you to grasp WHY they would craft a shot like that, I understand.
Superman is an iconic character. He has old roots, and certain images resonate with his fans. The vault is a symbol of strength. Impregnable by most. That he was either thrown into it and survived, or punched his way into it, states in a simple, yet effective, VISUAL WAY, how strong he is.
I know your feeble little brain would have preferred something 'modern' and 'cool' like Superman wrestling Lobo, showing his 'mad skillz". As it stands, they decided to put someone in charge of it who had a little taste and not some vapid dumb-fuck who can't wrap his head around grander concepts.
Oh and this is Life Goes On you silly little fuckstick...I'll give you 10 guesses (I play to my audience) as to which one is Corky...:

-
It does seem silly for Superman to have a "protective" suit. There is something about the old Reeve costume that says, "I don't need anything more than this to be the most powerful person in the world."
-
...even during the first few years. Especially during the first few years.
http://dccomicsartists.com/superwhoswho/SupermanPage.html -
...I thought he did a great job on that level with the very brief scene of the first Night Owl getting home-invaded by the Topknots.
How it played that music and had him seeing himself punch out bad guys of old while punching out Topknot goons...that was probably one of the most heartfelt and soulfully pure moments of Watchman.
There were other scenes that were close (Night Owl 2's talks with Rorshach, etc)...
But I have to agree that this very much looks like Saturday Night Fever Superman. I couldn't quite figure it out but that's pretty much it....it's a god damn hair helmet!!
Hair Helmet! Hair Helmet!!!
love saying that...
HAIR HELMET!!! Watch out or I'll headbutt you with my indestructible HAIR HELMET!!! -
And it was her version in Sucker Punch as well, for some reason.

Re: Powerman 5000 should sue Snyder's ass for wasting their song/lyrics, Army of Me on a shitty film like Sucker Punch ...
by goldentribe
Ever heard of Bjork? The laughable 'artist' known as Powerman 5000 had nothing to do with the creation of that song.
And here you are bitching about music quality. el oh el. -
of the last costume? And this is what we get now? Really?
I have no faith in this movie. This looks just like a Snyder film so far, all cgi and washed out looking. Expect plenty of slo mo.
And the casting. Great cast, for any film but superman. I'm not in the Routhe camp, but I thought he did a fine job. But this guy...
His face is right, but he's way to small. The muscles are obviously fake, and he's too short.
Superman is 6'4", 225 lbs. The only two actors with the right build and look are Routhe and Armie Hammer. Personally I lean toward Hammer. But it's irrelevant now.
And if they do away with the shorts, its really gonna suck. I don't care if you think its stupid to wear shorts over pants, the contrast balances the look. -
Lois: So...um...what's with...yer suit there? Why so lumpy?
Supes: Oh...this? It's to protect me.
Lois: Protect you?! Yer made of damn steel! Yer bullet-proof! Missile-proof even! Protect what?
Supes: My modesty, Lois.
Lois: Modesty?
Supes: Well...if a bad guy shoots a flamethrower at me...close range...and all I'm wearing is blue spandex or cotton...The fabric will burn off of me...leaving me standing there in my birthday suit. Not a pretty picture.
Lois: That's your opinion.
Supes: Well, this suit will not burn...or tear... under the most extreme circumstances. It's as impenatrible as my skin...as is my cape.
Lois: What's with that cape, anyways? Big fan of 300?
Supes: Great flick....but, no. I may be indestructible...however, the citizens of Metropolis that I'm saving are not. I can't tell you how many times I've had to use it to cloak innocent bystanders from a blast...or falling debris...or a heat ray. It saves lives, Lois.
Lois: Was it made on Krypton?
Supes: Nope....I saw it in the windows at Macy's and I just HAD to have it!! Toodles!
(Supes flys off)
Lois: Jeezus. Get back in the closet, Liberace! -
i wouldn't have added the scales to the big "S" though. would've added more contrast.
-
That's right, oh the slightest hair on his head is out of place bla bla bla, go crazy guys.
-
I dig it, the dimples look larger and further spaced apart vs the basketball look of Spiderman, also notice Spiderman has different textures depending on the color. Here the Super suit has the same texture throughout, even on the boots.
The first thing that came to mind when looking at the new Superman was the old comics. Basically until the 90's comics were printed with 4 colors and everything in between was done with dots over one of the 4 primary colors
http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l8151tLXcR1qz8hy0o1_500.jpg
To be technical, since Supes' costume was made of primary colors, it never did have that look to it but overall, it reminded me of how all comics looked basically until the 90s.
If any character's costume can get away with it, it's Superman - the shit came from Krypton. -
Looks GOOD
-
Maybe it more about protecting the suit more then him. I am sure superman gets his fair share of suits torn up from time to time. Maybe making it out of a material like that involves less maintenance.
-
First of all -- while Superman himself doesn't need protecting (and almost every circumstance) his uniform should be able to withstand attacks as well.
So, making it some kind of armor is fine with me. Hopefully, its kryptonian cloth of some kind that was adapted by Supes. -

I think Cavil is perfect, however I dislike the costume and the greasy hair.
by royston lodge
I'm a big Henry Cavil fan, and I think he's perfect for the role.
HOWEVER...
- The costume is too shiny. I thought the costume from Superman Returns was perfect. Why not simply reuse it?
- The greasy hair is really wrong. I thought the hair we saw in the earlier post when he was wearing his "civilian" clothes was perfect for a modern Supes.
I'm still happy about Cavill, but I'm less optimistic about the movie as a whole. -
That suit is pretty much no different to the crappy suit that Bryan Singer came up. What's with the subdue colors on it too..???
Hack Snyder proves to me time and time again that he has no taste and cannot even make an image look decent. Look how fake that safe door looks. You might as well just leave the green screen in there! -
It would be amusing to see that process in the film, maybe in a montage. "By Krypton's pearly gates, is saving the next out-of-control locomotive really worth these hours at the sewing machine?"

That would stand for Sexual Assault.
His facial expression makes me feel like Kal-El is about to sexually assault me. -
I still hate the lizard texture, but also, that cape is fucking massive, and it made me wonder about something that I never thought about before: so Clark's got the supes costume on under his workaday suit. What about the cape? no matter how small, you can hide that shit. Does he keep it in his briefcase? In his back pocket? Does he have capes stashed all over the city so he can pull one out whenever he transforms?
Regardless, this cape in particular is pretty atrocious. It's a little too stylized, and, as mentioned, waaay too long. compare it to Reeves cape, for instance:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FVXCQBs2iUU/TIBydug-nGI/ AAAAAAAAEZA/MFjzCQO8u2c/s1600/Superman.jpg
Never mind hiding it under your suit, you'd need a giant rolling suitcase to carry that thing.
I guess we're to assume that it's kryptonian tech and it folds up into nothing, only to unfurl when he's ready to spring into action? -
He'll be 46 before Man of Steel is released (I assumed he was some mid-30s wunderkind who quickly rose through the ranks of whatever video game programming department spawned him.
He and fellow fortysomething JJ Abrams could improve with additional age. By contrast, Stanley Kubrick had done The Killing, Paths of Glory, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and A Clockwork Orange by this age. Spielberg had done everything he'd ever really be remembered for. Hell, even Orson Welles was only 43 when Touch of Evil came out, even though he had already bloated by then. -
This is SUPERMAN, not Batman. Superman's cape -- at most -- comes down to his knees. It doesn't drape on the floor like a fucking drag queen.

... I think Zach Snyder is a tool who wouldn't know how to make a good film if he tried.
The frustrating thing about Snyder is that he comes up with some amazing IMAGES, but anything involving CHARACTER or STORY ends up shallow as a pie dish.
If Brian Singer couldn't make a compelling Superman picture, I doubt that Snyder can do any better. -
He looks like a Jersey Shore Superman, not liking it so far from this shot.

It's great!! Good way to be different from previous incarnations - but that Spider-Man material on the uniform is on everything now, even the NEW Spider-Man outfit and the Routh Superman as well!
-
The Chris Reeve figure on the other hand... WOW!
-
Seriously, it looks like a really good action figure of Cavill as superman; the pose, the hair that looks like a cheap plastic hair helmet from the temporary costume shops that pop up every halloween-even the cape looks like it was molded out of plastic...also, the colors are too dull-Superman is supposed to be a beacon of hope and a bright symbol of all that's good in the world. It's ok to make the world dark and gritty-but the character needs to be in stark contrast-sorry to everyone who thinks the colors are cheesy-but Supes isn't the Dark Knight, and he's not supposed to be. Thus far, I'm as disappointed as I thought I would be, but I'm trying to reserve judgement and remain cautiously optimistic. I still have hope-I hated the idea of Cavill in the role-but when I found out how much he wanted it, I obtained a newfound respect for him, and I actually like Snyder(except for Dawn of the Dead and Sucker Punch) and believe with the right story he could do well...anyway-just my thoughts, doesn't mean anything
-
Yes, he doe like a villain, and that's what will make the film succeed. Batman was a failure until they made him look and act like a villain. Long ago, he was once even referred to as a terrorist who fights criminals.

oh man, you keep referencing that show let it go man let it go! haha
So according to you Zack Snider is the best man for the job right, I mean you defend his Super Man movie solely on this picture without even knowing what the fuck is up? because of personal nostalgic bullshit?
I am not saying this movie will suck I am saying stop it with the bank heist in general with superhero movies... the reason why the first Iron Man movie worked was because of the scene in the desert where he kills all the terrorists and hands the surviving one to the people they were oppressing. That was a relevant scene, now compare that to the numerous bank heists scenes in superhero movies none compare, why because it is redundant, irrelevant, therefore boring it takes you out of the movie.
Just understand my frustration with the subject matter please! I beg you! fuck!
The reason why they crafted this pic is to get consumer trolls like you interested in something you have already seen a dozen times just a bit different it doesn´t take a genius to know that.
Yes Lobo fighting superman would be so much cooler than seeing louis Lane cocktease the shit out of clark Kent in an office booth for half an hour.
Superman should fuck Wonder Woman in his spare time in space none the less with a bright sun in the background, he should have his eyes Bright red whenever fighting Lobo or Darkseid, He should end poverty, hunger bring world peace or stop global warming. but that´s just me, he shouldn´t have to deal with Bank Vault at all nor stand in front of one for an iconic promotional shot.
-
I think it looks awful. Hate the blue material that makes up a majority of the costume - it looks like the same boring, shit they've been doing on everything else (like, have you seen the Spider-Man pictures?). The boots and emblem look like cheap rubber. The cape looks good, though. I don't hate the cape.

Which happily suggests a slug-out with something/someone super-powered. The rest of the costume looks OK, for a darkly lit shot. FAR to early to be making declarations of "ruined!" or "The color's off by a pixel or two! Waah!"

I'm on 5,000 calories a day... I'm training two-and-a-half hours a day, pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman."Cavil admitted that his first reaction when putting on the Superman costume was to "guffaw and laugh". "I thought 'Okay, holy hell, this is real, it's not a joke anymore. This is it... you're doing it, you're right in the middle of it'," he explained.

You can't possibly be this slow!
I have not defended the film, not once, as I have not seen it yet.
What I jumped on, was the dumb-as-fuck comment you made about bank heists being in a movie, a comment made with regards to a FUCKING PROMOTIONAL SHOT USED TO PROMOTE THE FUCKING SUIT. A suit that EVERYONE AND THEIR FUCKING MOTHER HAS BEEN DYING TO SEE.
They weren't saying 'Hey, this here bank vault, THIS IS THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE!!!'
The first shots of Iron Man were on a grey background if I recall right. Did you think the villain in the movie would be the colour grey? Run for cover, Iron Man is fighting that age-old nemesis, the colour GREY!
Your comment is typical of the asshats who come in here and see one little thing and fail to use some common sense before they fucking post. The Dark Knight teaser had people asking why Bruce was doing pushups in a prison and walking on a mountain in the new film. Lack of COMMON FUCKING SENSE.
It has NOTHING to do with 'nostalgic bullshit', or whether or not I think Snyder is right for this film. It is simply looking at the shot and recognizing why the fuck they did what they did.
And if a promotional shot for a SUIT has your panties in a twist over the relevance of a bank heist in today's society, then you pal are fucked in that empty head of yours.

Dude has an alien fortress with highly advanced robot servants and access to literally ANYTHING that he desires. He could hire fucking the best tailor in all of the sectors of all the universe and tell him / her / it to make the baddest suit ever. He could definitely make it himself, he's the goddamn Superman. Don't you assholes read comix?
Oh well, I guess it's the origin. So maybe Ma Duke / Kent sews up a cheap outfit for his first few outings and he gets the alien badass suit later, after he's fully accepted his "dual citizenship "status ( a la Byrne's initial run).
I am pretty sure that I just put more thought into this movie than the clowns making it, though. Not Nolan and the Snyde, per se, but DC and Warner in general. Clueless. -
But that makes him kinda cool. The suit is a bit kooky though.

It annoys me that so many people are willing to suspend disbelief when it comes to a flying, indestructible, laser beam eyes, freezing breath, super strong human looking alien who lives in the Arctic in a space castle who battles giant robots, other aliens, zombies, wizards and a bunch of other complete hoo-ey - BUT absolutely insist that his costume be armored, because otherwise it would rip.
Fuck sake, give him the regular costume. Either regular everyday material that is protected becaue of his aura or make it Kryptonian cloth that looks like wool but is indestructible. But make it look like cloth - not plastic or rubber or leather - just cloth.
And for the undies - you ever watch a male dancer perform in just tights? That'd be a whole lot of junk coming at you 40ft wide on a theater screen. As silly as it seems, shorts over tights would actually be a realistic option, if one wanted to maintain some sort of modesty. -

Your faith is misplaced son. -
He's an alien from outer space, and he's familiar with and proud of his extraterrestrial origin, even though he acts and feels and lives as a human.
The aliens of his native planet wore capes and shorts over tights and did other weird alien shit - so the costume doesn't need to reflect or consider human sensibilities. A Scotsman who's proud of his Scottish background doesn't re-vamp a kilt so that it resembles pants - he wears the damn kilt and everyone else has to deal.
So I'm fine w/ undies. -

Justice League movie should be a rewrite of Dark Knight Returns
by dailysportspages
Superman has pretty much put everyone in jail, stopped any kind of terrorists and organized crime worldwide, brought peace on earth, and is finally ready to take his much put off trip to go investigate the remains of his home planet of Krypton.
While there he ends up getting involved in a battle going on in space that is part of a greater war against a planetary emperor tyrant named Darkseid.
In that battle Superman gets so exposed to kryptonite that if visibly starts to age him and we get a cool CG scene were his hair starts to grow and he gets facial hair and and skin wrinkles a bit and his hair starts to receede, etc...
He is saved by the Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern who serve to give him more information on the great interstellar war that is going on.
How they fight planet by planet to try to stop Darkseid but they keep falling short and losing planets.
The current planet they are trying to save is the home planet of the Amazons... this is where the young warrior that becomes known as Wonder Woman is introduced.
They arent able to save the planet but before its destroyed they are able to save a few people and bring them aboard their ship.
Green Lantern takes the people in order to find a place to relocate them, but not before Wonder Woman and Superman share a moment.
GL tells Superman that he too is from earth but hasnt been back there in many years, and that as soon as he is finished settling these people in a new home he wants to go back to earth and visit his old home.
Wonder Woman wants to come along too.
For now Superman is going back to earth to recruit some of earths super heroes into the war with Darkseid and for earth to prepare its defenses.
Only to get here and find himself attacked by a group of vigilante ex heroes wielding kryptonite.
Its how he finds out that while he has been away only a year or so has gone by.
But on earth its been 10 years...
Luthor is president.
A few weeks after Superman left Luthor unleashed a Superman clone that he had perfected months ago but was waiting for the perfect time to unleash.
The clone claimed he was Superman back from his mission and everyone greeted him like a returning hero.
But when Luthor tried to tell him what to do the clone Superman proved that he was not under Luthors control.
The clone of Superman found himself believing that he really was Superman.
He proposed marriage to Lois who accepted.
But soon after she started to notice changes in his personality.
She eventually broke off the engagement and sent clone Superman into a lailspin.
Lex made a deal with the league of villains to pin crimes on the heroes.
That plus the personal issues going on with the clone Supes and Lois was enough to allow Lex to persuade the clone to help him control vigilante justice.
Ultimately clone Superman wanted to do what was right for the country and the world.
Knowing what harm would come to the country from exposing the president, and what that would mean for his own identity as Superman... an understanding was struck between the two men in which Luthor would have what he always wanted, an alien free world in which his law reigned.
Luthor had no other choice and this plan suited him fine, at least the clone Superman was no alien and while free willed he had turned out to be upholding the law of the land... which is what Lex wanted after all.
After a few staged terrorists attacks were pinned on Green Arrow and and the death of the Joker pinned on Batman, more and more superheroes became wanted under the newly created law against vigilantism.
Clone Superman was able to be swayed by Luthors arguments that the other superheroes were a dange and that they should be registered with the government, etc...
Clone Superman became the strong arm of that policy.
And all this is happening at the same time during the movie as the stuff going on in space with the real Superman.
Or maybe these are two movies or a trilogy, i dont know.
But the crucial point of one movie should be Batman being killed by who he believes is Superman, except its the clone Superman.
That battle should be the first "Justice League".
Batman, Green Arrow, maybe Flash and Aquaman, and others...
All finally come together to fight the only enemy they could not handle on their own... Superman!
Batman dies, a few others get maimed, everyone is old and some had already retired or been put in jail.
The villains even created their own little group to fight Superman as they could no longer operate on their own either.
Their group while not in any way or shape being affiliated with the Justice League does share its same goal of fighting Superman.
So in that respect they did find themselves at times fighting the same foe from two different sides.
Upon Batmans 'death' Green Arrow is able to land enough krpypton arrows to weaken and chase him away.
Only for Superman to arrive to find a maimed Green Arrow and go after clone Superman himself to avenge the death of Batman.
But at the battle site a large air ship arrives, and a 55 year old beauty of a woman looks out the window as Batmans body is airlifted into the ship.
Talia is taking Batman to her late fathers last Lazarus Pit.
The clone Superman starts slowly breaking down as he is now the Bizarro Supes.
After he is defeated Superman tells them of the war coming to earth and how they must prepare together to defend earth from the coming Darkseid.

FAIL -- should've picked a BETTER LIT still for 1st reveal...
by big dumb ape
My 2 cents, not that anyone cares...
They should have picked a BETTER LIT still for the first reveal. As someone else already noted in the talkback, there is a big difference....
...no, wait, I take that back...there is a FUCKING HUGE difference between Superman and Batman. Hell, for that matter, between Superman and 99.999% most iconic comic characters. Simply put: Superman is SUPPOSED to represent all that's "good" in humanity. He's SUPPOSED to be a symbol of light.
That's WHY one of the best scenes and directed shots in SUPERMAN RETURNS (not that there was much to praise in that lousy film, but there were a few moments where Singer got something right) was when Superman flew up into the sky, to recharge himself with the sun's rays. THAT was Superman. Him looking heroic and angelic... bathed in light... the music swelling... seeing the camera pan from his heroic fact to a chest thrown out and down his arm to seeing his fist suddenly tighten and clench in determination.
THAT was a moment that Singer nailed.
Yes, as a lifelong Supes fan, like a lot of geeks, I like the overall COMPOSITION to this image. Yes, I get that it harkens back to a more powerful and "manly" Superman -- basically a life action version of the Fleischer cartoons. And I would LOVE to see a movie taking that general approach, where Superman is a MAN and not an emo wimpy guy who just happens to be uber powerful.
But that's why...if I was Warner Bros...I would have found a still that was a bit better lit, something that conveyed a sense of power, but ALSO CONVEYED the sense of character.
As it is, that's probably what Snyder felt he did. And I'm sure there are others here that will say "Fuck yeah! He looks like a bad ass! This movie will rockkkkkk!" (insert silly teens sticking out their tongues and making devil horn gestures with their fingers)
Like I said, I LIKE the still...I LIKE that they're trying to show some "scale" to things...in fact, I'd agree with 2 notions that were tossed out. First, that this comes from a scene where he's stopping a bank robbery and in a display of power he rips off the vault door OR maybe this is from a fight scene against Zod, and the door is crushed because he just got thrown into it.
Either idea is fine...either would set a nice tone for having a POWERFUL Superman back on the screen. I just wish they didn't go for the dark, bad ass tone instead of the brighter, INSPIRATIONAL Superman that people deep down inside always admired and respected because...as I said before...Superman is SUPPOSED to be our BEST side. -
For what it is, one picture, the costume looks updated but still familiar, which is suppose is the balance they want to strike.
The problem with these early sneek peeks things, like Prometheus, you can make anything look good in just a tiny amount and people start to assume and expect long before the fact and then everythings an anti climax in the end.
They've really got to consider using John Williams theme, you cant seperate that music from Superman without stuffing it up. -

-
I am looking forward to see what they do with Zod - also he is in an aircraft carrier - reckon the govnt took his ship?
-
These trolls come out of nowhere.
-
Thank you for tightening your helmet and mis-reading what I said.
When I said they decided to put someone in charge of it who had a little taste, I was referring to the person who created the image, NOT ZACK SNYDER.
As for his filmography, I'll humour you:
- Dawn of the Dead: Really enjoyed it, for different reasons than I did the original Romero film. Not better, not worse, just different.
- 300: Yes, I loved this film. It's a painting. It's an adrenaline shot. It's beautiful.
- Sucker Punch: Terrible. Just a mess.
- Watchmen: I have no serious love for the source material. I wasn't of age when the comic was released and I didn't fall in love with it when I finally did read it. The film? It was decent and I think he did a serviceable job putting to screen something that was a mountain to tackle.
-
Yes!
-
He'll trip over that thing. But it's better than that short monstrosity I've seen in the comic previews.
We can nitpic about the costume, but it will all boil down to the story and the film's execution.
Fingers crossed! -
I like the textured, thick feel to it, it has to withstand super speeds and flight, I think Edna Mole would like this, sans cape natch.
The people saying he has rape face on, interesting projection, stay away from me.
Though if he came around in that costume I wouldn't necessarily call the cops on him. -

what's Hollywood's OBSESSIOn with BASKETBALL TEXTURED super hero costumes
by awepittance
wtf? they just keep getting more basketbally over time
-
I don't really care for the "raised" S-shield, and I'm getting tired of that fiber/threaded/whatever it is look on all these superheroes.
BUT, those minor complaints aside, at least *this* Supes looks like he can kick major ass. I don't have all that much of a problem with Returns - and I really, really liked Routh in the role - but the Supes from that film was not an ass-kicker. I know there's much more to the character than kicking ass, but as we all know, that particular aspect of the films has been sorely lacking.
Anyway, this could be good. It certainly doesn't give me the "this is going to be terrible" feeling like I got with, say... each Transformers trailer. -
...and after all of Snyder's previous so-called "original" work...you know.
Textured suits and dark lighting does not guarantee an interesting piece of fiction. Fingers crossed. -

Why did he have the hair curl as Clark Kent, but he doesn't have it as Superman?
by royston lodge
That doesn't seem to make any sense.
-
Maybe it is just the fact that the still is so dark, but I don't see why they had to tone the colors down yet again. The problem with the Singer suit was that it was too dark, especially since it used a deep burgundy/maroon instead of red.
The cape looks long, but that's only because I'm SURE that Synder being Synder there will be LOTS of shots like this where they even made "extra long capes" so he could fold it or drape it or let it blow in the wind for a SPECIFIC visual. And that's okay -- in terms of the comic book itself, artists have always used that exact same trick for dramatic effect. It's not like anyone EVER draws the cape at a particular size and then nails it perfectly...in terms of matching size...in every panel thereafter.
DON'T LIKE the scales. They look silly and like others have noted, it's like Superman is coming late to the game and is now copying Spider-Man or other characters. I could even live with the scaley look if it wasn't SO damn pronounced. This is a long shot and it's already distracting to the eye. In close-ups it's going to look WORSE.
DON'T like that the emblem is scaled either. Looks silly to me. If the cape is a solid material, I would have made the red on the emblem and his boots MATCH the cape for being non-scaled and more clean looking.
For that matter, I DON'T like that the yellow in the emblem is scaled too. It looks too distracting and...overall...it just pushes the suit over the top in terms of looking TOO scaley. They should have at least let the emblem BE an emblem, and simply said the blue portion...the majority of the suit...is made of a particular material that's scaled.
The hair is "okay." Yes, it looks a bit too poofed, but I think that's just because they could only do so much given that Cavill obviously has a fantastic full hairline that every balding guy alive would envy. The problem with the hair is that you can see they wanted a more "full" look for when he's Clark...so he'll look more handsome and dashing...but when it's time to be Superman, you can only slick it down so much before it then starts to look silly.
And that's the odd thing with the still as well. No spit curl. Which seems odd since we already KNOW that he'll have the spit curl from the stills that we've seen of Clark.
Frankly, I don't know why things aren't reversed. It would make more sense for him as Clark to have a more slicked hair look...and then when he's SUPERMAN, that's when he has the spit curl since THAT is obviously part of his iconic look as well.
Overall...as I said in my other post...looks "okay" but I wish it was a better lit still to give us a much cleaner and better look at things. -

The suit doesn't bother me...Caville just does NOT have the right look
by wcolbert
No offense to the guy. It's not just that he has poofy early 80's hair, his short stature (I'M taller than this guy by like 4" if he's 5'10"ish- I shouldn't feel that I'm bigger than Superman- and lifts do NOT make up for the fact that he simply has the frame of a shorter man, even if you put a couple inches on his heels) or that he has eyebrows like Schwarzenegger in Terminator after they were burned off...it's just the overall look. He doesn't LOOK like Superman. At least, no iteration that I've ever seen.
I think I know what Snyder is trying to do here - the throwback hair, the action comics style of suit and coloration- he appears to be making a period Superman film. Possibly. Or simply basing his Supes off of the early days. Which makes me wonder if this Superman won't be a bit limited in power compared to what he was later on in the 70's.
It also appears that he's just stopped some sort of bank robbery attempt- a huge vault door that has clearly been blown outward from the inside.
At any rate...I really liked Routhe for the part, and there was no danger of 'confusing' anyone by casting him again. Anyone with a brain, that is. He only needed to bulk up a bit. So I think this is some pretty aweful casting.
HOWEVER...I could be wrong-I concede to that. Maybe Snyder has some vision of a different kind of Supes that will actually be pretty awesome. I will hold my final judgment until I actually see the film (how difficult is that, people?)...I'm just a little worried, is all. -
the costume. It evolves over time in the comics, so no big woop. Just don't do stupid shit like Supes bastard son, miscasting of Lois Lane, or making Lex Luthor a douche making land schemes. Just give us Superman and some super fighting with Doomsday or a giant robot or something. This should be a no fucking brainer, dudes.
-
I love it (it looks like some sort of alien fabric) and it really looks like we are going to get a modern superman film with lots of action!!! say what you want about snyder but he knows how to shoot action!
-
I want red eyed angry superman and it looks like I'm gonna get just that with cavil. YES!
-
You're mixing me up with the other guy. I'm not the one who said Hollywood made Casino Royale, and I didn't come up with that example in the first place. I was just agreeing with him that the classic theme ought to be included, even if it's only in a small way.

What's with the rage dude? I thought you were cool.

I like this pic a lot. Last movie we had a Superman who got shot in the chest by a gattling gun and we didn't see him beat down the guys doing it. That Superman gets his ass kicked on Kryptonite Island and we never see him beat down the guys who did it... This Superman... Holy shit this Superman I would not try and face down. Sorry but Lex and his land schemes would last one second against this guy.
-
Not your typical american superman....
-
...as lets face it he is the only reason anyone would want to see this movie WB must be smoking something strong to think Routh was why SR did not make them enough money how about the $250M budget & all the money wasted on the Cage/Burton cancelled Superman project & all the producers fees....that is why the movie did not have enough action they wasted probably $100M before shooting any footage!
Lets be honest here Nolan's name is what WB are buying into here with their blind trust so when it bombs (and it will bomb massively) Nolan's stock will go down in Hollywood......... -
Naw. It's gonna look great posed in slow motion for Snyder's hyperstylized action scenes. If anything is gonna be perfect in this movie, it's gonna be the costumes and art direction.
So far, so good. This might actually be good. -
Aug 04, 2011 3:31:09 PM CDT
the thick hair makes sense for his style, as well
by winona_ryders_pussy_juice
He's got a lot of large proportions. Giant, thick cape, strong, protruding Superman symbol, thick boots, thick, masculine hair. It's really shiny in this pic, they could definitely cut back on the hair gel.

I prefer the texture. It looks good for live action.

mattman: UltraTron isn't a troll. But he will never forget what d.vader did to deserve torment with out end.

The legend is as such..
One day this d.vader comes strolling into someone's obituary acting the fool. He gets banned. Next thing you know we endure a month of what was either fanatical maniac nerds or d.vader under a shitload of different aliases writing the same bullshit boycott protests over and over. He is deserving of chastisements of the highest order until he can make it up to me somehow. But those cells in my brain contain the info already. I'm mad that he altered my brain with knowledge of his existence to begin with. He has much atonement ahead of him. -
Particularly on the S sheild.
And the jew fro is a little weird. Hell his hair looked more like Superman's at Comic Con.
It's hard to tell what the colors are. Looks like a navy blue and maroon. Guess I'm ok with that.
Overall looks a FUCK of a lot better that Singer's gay pride parade costume. And of course it's nice to actually have a MAN portraying Superman again, not some little fembot. -
Other than though, I think it looks pretty good. A nice, modern. update. I hope the movie isn't overly green/screened 300/Sucker Punch style. Still I'm pretty pumped for it, it would have to try hard to be any worse than Superman Returns.
Fuck doofus real estate dumbass Lex Luthor
Fuck Superman having an annoying kid
Fuck Superman acting like a stalker
Fuck Superman not punching anything -

I was there. I was one of the people who stood up for him after he got banned... all because Beaks is an insecure child. Bringing it up now, without provocation, is trollish behavior.

Looking at all of these comments, it's clear that there is no consensus. It's a very divisive and polarizing look, indeed. On the one side are the older fans of Superman, who prefer their Superman to be a small-town Boy Scout who humbly uses his super-human powers to benefit truth, justice, and the American way; on the other side are those who prefer Superman to be portrayed as an unleashed and nigh-immortal extraterrestrial god of justice and Humanism at the beginning of a lifetime that will span millennia. To those of the former camp, Superman is a figure of modern folklore and represents the optimitic spirit of determination, bravery, and politeness that compliment the ideal American citizen, and his enemy is corporate greed; to those of the latter camp, Superman is an archetype of fantasy and science fiction whose enemies are those common to those two genres -- enormous, god-like monsters and awesome sorcerers.

The only thing that people should ever concern themselves is with the writing. And I guess the acting, too. But it doesn't matter if he looks like he stepped right out of a comic book if the story sucks, and Superman's portrayal sucks.
This costume bitching misses the point. The Last Airbender movie's costumed mostly looked very accurate to the cartoon. The problem was the writing and acting of the movies sucked. The visuals didn't help that clunker. -
But the more I look at it the more I hare it. Also-I'm not just some random hater-I was excited about avatar and never understood the pre release hate, i usually reserve judgement, but if something sucks and isn't right, then it sucks and isn't right. This costume SUCKS and I still don't think Cavill is right...the sad thing us that it's not hard to make a successful Superman. Don't give him powers he doesn't have, don't change the goddamn costume, give him a credible threat, and for fuck's sake-stop making him such a whiny little bitch! To paraphrase Mr. Morrison-if you had all of his powers, you wouldn't have a care in the world
-
Ahh, but what if you didn't have the woman you loved? Granted, said woman will live only 70-or-so years, and you will live perhaps 10,000 years, but, hey, that's a fact that often escapes you, so you're just young and in love. Haha...
-
... do society a favor and kill yourself before you have offspring. Who the fuck said "the color is off by a few pixels"? The fucking cape is purple and the suit is just about as dark a blue as you can get. It doesn't look anything like Superman as depicted in any medium EXCEPT the failed Superman Returns (where everyone hated the costume) and Superman III (where Superman was depicted as an evil version of himself, corrupted by Kryptonite). It's not the rest of the forum's fault that you are either (a) content with the steady stream of suck that Hollywood supplies, or (b) an emo kid that needs the world to perpetually look like it's 10PM in a Hong Kong ghetto.
-
just have him freaking PUNCH somebody! He can wear a plastic Halloween costume for all I care.
-
...looks nothing like any Superman from, what, 70 years of comics - yes, this pic alone is suitably more badass than the entirety of Singer's boring mess, but so far, it also looks NOTHING like Superman. And I agree with the majority consensus that this fucking Spalding ball look is groan inducingly pathetic, and that the muted colours represents a complete lack of understanding about how to represent the character. Superman should tower over everyone, stand out like Dwayne Johnson stands out whenever he stands beside, well, ANYone, or like Darth Vader lorded over everybody in the original Star Wars, or simply like Christopher Reeve did - he's an imposing figure. Fuck it, I just lost interest in this...

This one pic tells me all I need to know about the movie. I like Snyder but I dont think his overly dark tones fit Superman, Superman should not look like 300,Watchmen, or Suckerpunch. I thought Snyder had the sensibility to adapt his style this pic looks like it came from any of the three movies I just mentioned. Call me a hater, or a prophet but this already bears Snyder's signature style which does not particularly fit Superman, and remember I like Snyder's style.

Everyone knows the single worst stretch of bannings was the 72 hours when Moriarity banned half the forum over the LOST flash-forward spoilers and then followed it up the next night with banning people for believing Bruce Willis was actually posting on the forums (which he, of course, was). Not a Superman fan really, but that does look pretty f#ng awesome. That's a Man of Steel that isn't f#ng around.
-
Touche-I was just implying that the best recent incarnation of Superman was All-Star. They nailed it-as I said before-Superman is a beacon of hope and light-even if the world is dark and gritty, he shouldn't be. I'm tired of "dark" "gritty" "stylized"! If I want that I'll watch another Snyder film or one of the good Batman's. I want superman to be bright, I want to be entertained, I want fantastic worlds, not real ones-I get enough of real life, I want escape. Sadly, no matter how good the film is or how good Cavill is, I've already made up my mind to judge it harshly, even tho I know that's wrong. Iys just that, at this point, such a big deal has been made by me that even if it's good I'll hate it. I know me-I'll think to myself everytime Cavill is onscreen,"Man I hate this guy, gosh that suit looks terrible, wow! Amy Adams can act her ass off but they couldn't have found a more terrible Lois Lane." these are my hang ups and I own them-but as I said, when stuff is wrong, it's wrong

why mess with perfection - even the comics are relaunching superman and justice league this month with a new superman suit - why? - that chris reeve toy looks perfect - that is superman - snyder's looks cool and im sure the movie will be great but why change the suit at all - ok maybe tone down the brightness a bit, but leave the suit alone - it doesnt need ribbed seams or a collar or work boot treads on the boots or a shiny metallic texture with a tactile pattern or a different "s"

Superman was supposed to be a Jewish guys vision of a Super Jew, right?
I mean he was written by two poor Jews who who had the Yiddish upbringing in Jewish parts of Germanic lands.
The 'ubermensch' philosophy was very influential to the creators of superman and has been ingrained into almost every single piece of supermans entire story.
Dont believe me?
Ubermensch is a super man, a man who is the best of humanity, that has all of its potential but also the capability to do the most harm.
He is at the same time earths greatest hero as he is earths greatest threat.
So the Ubermensch can be both things.
He could be the ultimate hero or the ultimate villain... or both.
The Superman story has our character of Superman represent that entirely heroic side.
But the Ubermensch dichotomy is still present within him in his need to split his personality into two complete opposite type of people.
Lex is the complete opposite of Superman.
He is the other side of the Ubermensch spectrum.
But because he is the opposite of Superman he has no powers, he is not loved, and he has a fatalistic outlook instead of an optimistic one.
Lex believes very strongly that Superman is the Ubermensch gone wrong and does whatever he can to try to stop him.
But here is the kicker... thats because in reality Superman IS the other side of the Ubermensch!
The "true" Ubermensch is Lex Luthor.
The story of Luthor goes out of its way many times to show us that while Luthor has this evil outward persona and his actions and deeds are evil... but deep down he is just a little boy who was not loved as a child and who lost his mother and brother, probably sister too, and went through a lot of personal shit growing up.
Because the philosophy of the Ubermensch has the character being able to be both be a total tyrant on one side, while a loving father or passionate patron of the arts on the other.
According to Nietzsche a guy like Lex Luthor would be the hero and Superman might be a true enemy.
Luthors fear of the looming threat of Superman is made clear and true issue after issue of the comics, cartoons and movies.
Superman has gone crazy and destroyed stuff, been mind controlled to destroy stuff, put on a ring with red rock in it that made him become a total douche, had countless super villains and monsters come to earth specifically looking to kick his ass and destroying all sorts of shit in the meantime.
I mean Lex is right, Superman is a huge threat.
What if Superman one day decides he's tired of our shit and just turns the entire planet into his own personal Ice Fortress Planet of Solitude?
Thats a lot to hang over your head if you are a worry wort like Lex.
Then what about Bizarro Superman?
Thats all about showing you the failure of Kal El's choice.
Showing us this guy who so badly wants to be like Superman but is merely a mirror reflection of Superman.
Basically its what WE the viewer should see when we see Superman.
A guy who is only half a human.
Thats the reason why the entire Krypton idea comes from.
Because Lex is the true Overman, the true Superman, and the man that Jor El wanted his son to be.
Which is yet another call back to the idea that the character we know as Superman is actually breaking with what his true self is.
The issues that Superman has with his father all through the series Smallville are all about this failure of Kal El to truly be the kind of true ubermensch he was created to be.
And then later we have the arrival of Kryptonians and specially Zod.
They are there to remind us of Kal El's failure.
Zod exists to show us what the idea of the Overman is supposed to truly be fully realized or on its way.
And this happens over and over with most of Supermans villains, characters, and storylines if the subsequent writers understand the true meaning of Superman.
Even all the way up to Darkseid.
And finally this new more Ashkenaz looking Jewish Superman with his thick wavy hair and more 'human' look is exactly what a pair of Jews from the early part of last century would think a super Jewish male with German Jewish ancestry from a big US city like Chicago or NY would look like during that era.
Big barrel chested, strong but not all long and defined like the swimmers body we got in Returns.
And strong with an straightforward male attitude, not femme, emo and pouty like Superman became in these last few decades.
But maybe going deeper into the "Clark Kent" persona as writers tended to do the last 30 years was their attempt to show how truly different from the "Obermensch" Superman has turned out to be.
Hence why Clark Kent became the reality and "Superman" became just his stage name in most of these more modern retelling of the story.
I personally like the Superman that is a fucking god walking amongst men... one where im glad there is someone like Lex Luthor who is afraid of the destructive potential of a being like Superman.
And the thought that he is merely but the first of many more coming in the future.
Would you buy his story of his planet being blown up and him hurtling through space as a baby in a little metal case only to land in the middle of a cornfield in Kansas... right off the bat?
I dunno about that one.
-
Superman doesn't wear navy blue
that was something ''returns'' got right! -
Ooooookay.
You don't know the real story huh? -
Damn, this look like some Bizarro Superman or something. I mean he coming off like some dark version of Supes! Is Nolan going for a dark version of Supes to his Batman???
WTF was Warner/DC thinking???
-
Looking at all of these comments, it's clear that there is no consensus.

There are only a handful of directors who have taken a superhero and managed to not just make a good movie but also create that bit of extra "HOLY $H&!" aura with stunning visuals and striking moments. Snyder is on that list and you can just tell from this image that this incarnation of Superman will take us there.
-
remember at the end when lex had superman's powers? - how it all made sense to him - seeing everything the way superman does - then how he freaked when the powers were taken away - superman wouldn't freak out if he lost his powers - well except in superman 2 when he acted too quickly then needed to fight zod - even then he was happy to be human but needed to save the world from 3 super ass holes that were more like lex

"Superman as an archetype of fantasy and science fiction that fights god-like enemies" version as much as the nostalgic version - i just wish they'd leave the suit alone

Wind up the brightness & saturation on the picture, it's all blue.
-
His was in full light and in an iconic pose, This is interesting but
a) he's hunched over, hiding alot of the suit an his body
b) it's too dark, The entire midsection is in shadows - we can't even tell if he's got underwear or not
c)he's not even on as real set, it's obvious he's infront of a green screen and the background was added in. Routh was on an actual set and it added depth to the picture -

Nice to see the dark blue make a return. Looks good!
-
I think this looks great.
I'm looking forward to this movie, and it's not because Jonathan Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with David Goyer, or because Chris Nolan attached his name to the producers list. I'm pumped to see this because I'm looking forward to FINALLY seeing a Superman film that packs a punch.
Anyone who says that he looks like he's breaking into a vault are fucking idiots; the vault is behind him. If he was actually breaking into it, or if this picture actually gave that impression, then he'd be facing the vault door.
Clearly this is a still from an action sequence. He doesn't "Look evil", he looks like he's ready to kick Zod's ass. It seems pretty obvious that he's recovering from being punched into and/or thrown into the vault from someone equally as powerful as him: General Fucking Zod.
His hair and the texture of the costume don't bother me one bit. I hate the new Spider-Man costume, because of the DESIGN, not the texture. I like the darker colors, the large symbol on his chest, etc. People complaining about his hair are stretching for nitpicking. There's nothing wrong with his hair here. Sure, it looks "poofy", but that be just the angle of his head.
Personally, I think we've had enough of the goody too shoe, boyscout, innocent Superman. I think the time is right to see a Superman that does more then throw stuff into the sun, and gush over Lois for the entire films duration. -
Perfect fucking post.

by cap'n jack

Just horrible :-(
-
He doesn't look remotley evil. He looks like he's ready to fight Zod.
-
Reeve was perfect, Routh was passable, but I'd really like to see Tom Welling play the role... he earned his cape with the Smallville series, but they screwed him out of a full costume in the last episode!
-
Do any of you ACTUALLY believe that they would make Superman/Kal-El/Clark mischevious or evil for this movie???
I know that pictures are worth a thousand words and such, but I can't understand how some of you people are mis-reading this image. How do you not get that this is an image from an action sequence? how do you not get that the damage caused to the vault behind him was because of Zod laying the smack down? Just look at what the picture is saying! He's standing himself up, and obviously preparing to take on his equal.
This is Superman, not fucking 'Hancock' -
says that cape is going to get him killed
-
although I don't respect Zack Snyder as a director yet, I love Superman, and I have faith that Christopher Nolan wouldn't get involved in something unless he could make it well. I'm glad to see that Superman's costume is essentially the same and I'm hoping for more character and acting than what Snyder's brought to the table with his past three movies. We have to really care about these characters past their ability to move in slo-mo porn.

by myphdisdoom
Recently The Amazingly shitty Spider-man is getting a pass from people even though it looks like shit. You gonna rag this outfit... Do the same for Spider-man because that costume seriously looks like shit.
-
If you can see the texturing of the suit so plainly from that distance, then it isn't subtle! I don't mind a little texturing, but it appears they've overdone it, big-time. It also looks too much like the "webbing" texture applied to various other super hero suits of late, especially Spiderman, so it's not exactly original. Oh, and I bet the iconic red panties are gone when we later see the suit out of the shadows, which is going to look like there's something missing from his wardrobe. I'm sure they could find a way to incorporate the red panties as a contiguous part of the suit without them looking like "underwear" as some think of them. But we'll have to see.
Beside that, I think Cavill looks the part perfectly. The important thing will be for him to have super-cool lines to say, unlike poor Brandon Routh who was given no good lines at all.
-
DEAN CAIN IS THE ONLY TRUE SUPERMAN -
This is Red Kryptonite Superman...I mean Green Kryptonite (now with Tar!!) Superman.

Honestly, If he looks mean in the first picture then people say he's "evil" or whatever. If he doesn't look mean in the first picture, then he's "gay". The first release pic is always a no-win situation.

Superman can't be muted and dark like this! The colors need to be bright. Look at that Reeve's superman! That's superman! Is this sposed to be an edgier darker superman?? Spare me.
The textured suites are all the rage in hollywood right now but this just looks like edgy and modern simply for the sake of doing it. It isn't timeless like that Reeves design... -

Great Caesar's Ghost…

As has already been said in some form or another, it does resemble a mixture of the original, 1938 Superman look with the somewhat brighter one that came about a few years later and stuck. Either way, surely nobody expected it to be a retread of Christopher Reeve. If it were, you'd all be criticizing it for being that!
Bottom line, Warners is desperate. Legally, they've only had a two or three year window in which to put a remotely faithful Superman film into production before the Siegel and Shuster estates (or one of them, anyway) take full control in 2013, so they probably just begged their most successful "superhero" filmmaker to oversee the project and, now, well... we'll all get what we get.
As for what that will be, I can't be sure, but I suspect it will be some take on two aliens from the same lost world - Kal-El and Zod - winding up on the same planet - Earth - each figuring out what they think they're supposed to do here and coming to conclusions different enough to make one have to use his power to go after the other. Nolan and Goyer have said that Kent will have to do some traveling and find himself (though I'm not sure those were the exact words). For all we know, Zod could wind up a Ra's Al Ghul figure ala "Batman Begins." It would make sense that after Jonathan Kent dies, Kal-El goes off to find himself and winds up in the tutelege of the ONLY other Kryptonian on the planet, one older than he and one that can teach him about who he really is.
I also think that, if the above is even remotely accurate, it accounts for what you guys call the "evil" look because this will probably be a Superman having just come to terms with his alien side and, perhaps, being overly determined to use his powers in very direct way.
There are only so many things they can do with this character, especially if their mandate is not to duplicate Donner. As such, the same goes for his look, his costume. My guess is that, like the 1938 Superman, he won't have quite so many powers and, as with Batman, it could factor into the look of his suit - that sort of tightly-woven, chainmail look that he does, indeed, seem to share with the new Spider-Man costume. Knowing Nolan and even Snyder, I'd be tempted to wager money that Superman won't even be able to really fly! At least not until the very end of the film.
I just wish they hadn't changed the release date. I'm kind of tired of never having really good genre movies in the winter. Besides, I think it does these films a disservice to lump them all together into one season, even if it's one season a year apart. -
and he's Mexican Superman from Family Guy.

It'll make 65 million opening weekend, counting the IMAX upcharge, flop the next, be forgotten before anybody can say, "A black dude as Perry WHITE, get it?," and it will be talkback fodder between some malformed cretins who wanna believe some comic book movies are any better or worse than any other comic book movie.
Been there, done that.
Don't any of you crave anything even remotely new or challenging?
Stupid question.
Have they started marketing AVENGERS as IRON MAN III yet, or have they just given that up? -

We all know that Zimmer's score isn't going to be...
by orbots commander
...nearly as memorable as John Williams' great Superman score.
I get that; it'll be like other Zimmer scores, more background mood music that isn't recognizable or some generic thing he slaps together from a discarded Dark Knight score.
The only thing I ask is: none of that wailing chick on the soundtrack, please, whom Zimmer seems so fond of, and inserted her incessant piping onto the soundtracks of Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven and probably ten other movies that I've missed.
If we see Superman in action and I hear "oooOOOweeEEEEEEooooOOOOOeeeeeeeEEEEEaaaaaaaa", I swear, I'm gonna smack somebody right there in the theater. -

Hell, just fucking avoid the comic book threads altogther, and if aicn is nothing but comic boo threads he just fucking avoid aicn altogether and more and whine in your own bitch ass basement -
I don't know why you so caustically insulted Bjork, I have nothing invested in her, I was only trying to point out that you were completely misplacing your outrage at the 'talent' of Powerman 5000 (LOL!) being 'wasted' on Snyder's Sucker Punch -- since they were one of many horrible modern groups on that soundtrack doing absolutely awful remixes of older songs. Bjork wrote the song they performed in that movie, so anything you like about its writing you have to attribute to her, not your pet retard rock group.
Now, despite the fact that I am only a fan of a scant few Bjork songs (All is Full of Love, Army of Me, Bachelorette, Hyperballad), let me ASSURE YOU: anyone with a pair of brain cells together, anyone with the slightest clue what major and minor chords are and how they sound different, anyone with taste in any sense of the word will tell you that Bjork is a better artist than Powerman 5000. A better artist, a better writer, a better celebrity, (a far bigger celebrity, at that!), and a better human being than the lot of those Rob Zombie wannabes put together.
You wrote {Powerman 5000 atleast has tunes, one can hum too} and {Your (Music) tastes is in your ass} -- I'm using curly brackets since apostrophes apparently fuck up this useless talkback box. That woefully inarticulate gibberish was the substance of your defense of Powerman, so I won't stick around to find out what second-grade insults you hurl in your next response. The fact that you valorize such a pitifully awful musician and not only dismiss but attack one so superior renders anything you could ever say hereafter completely null, void, and useless. -
The outfit, of course, doesn't look like Fleischer's -- except that Superman looks tough and brave.
The way that Superman apparently tears through a giant metal door -- that is the essence of Max Fleischer's take on the Man of Steel. Christopher Reeve's films would have a Superman who is afraid to break a piece of drywall.
However, I also think that this means that the Clark Kent of the Reeve's films is gone. Kent will no longer be a pushover nerd. He will be more of an investigative reporter.
I also hope that this film drops all of the politically correct (or Hollywood correct) innuendo as well.
Superman was an alien...who came to become an unabashed American. However, he fought corruption in and out of America. In the Fleischer serials, Superman fought gangsters, Japs, Europeans and even greedy industrialists.
It would be great to see Superman pull out the whoop ass on Al Qaeda terrorists, ghetto gangstas, street gangs, evil super villains and sinister Democrats who want to steal more of taxpayers' money and spend it on projects that they want under the guise that they can "help" the country by TAKING more money from taxpayers.
I am now EXCITED to see this film. This is what a photo is supposed to do (unlike the recent Spiderman pics). Looks good! I just hope that there isn't as much Watchmen or 300 in this film. I don't know that Snyder has done anything else (except DAWN OF THE DEAD).
It looks good, though. So, we have hope! -

The metal collar hook that's holding his cape on is kinda cool
by snookeroo
That's a throw-back from one of the very, very early costume designs back in the first days of Action comics.
The actor and costume have a cool retro vibe. I like it.
I do wish they'd kept the red trunks, though. -
This could be what Superman should be NOW! Not that pussy-whipped version Brian Singer did. That would have been a good movie thirty years ago, but it SUCKED in all aspects when it came out three decades too late.
I looked at the photo in Photoshop and brought the levels up and I saw no underwear. I saw a belt of some kind, but I couldn't see any red shorts. That would be nice. We really need to get away from the clown suit Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh wore. This more muted, textured suit looks real, like something Superman would really wear. Finally, we might have a Superman who isn't ambiguously gay.
I believe! -
from his Jimmy Olsen run. Which is a good thing.
-
Agreed about Zimmer.
While many of his scores are more mood setting music, some of his scores are phenomenal! THE THIN RED LINE, THE LION KING, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, PEARL HARBOR (horrible movie, great score), GLADIATOR, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and CALL OF DUTY were all iconic.
We can only hope that Zimmer will treat this film like the work of a lifetime! -
Yeah, the cape and hair especially look like Jack Kirby's Superman!
-
Good stuff. Not metrosexual man.
-
Given the costume, this could be the sequel's title.
:-) -
Large, Golden Age "S" logo, billowing cape, knee-high boots, muscles, square jaw, no phony spit curl. A *man* in the costume and not some WB/CW kid in underoos. Wow.
THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is Superman.
If I had one (or two) nitpicks, it would be that the colors look overly muted and that the costume fabric looks like it came from the Raimi Spiderman costume. Otherwise, someone had their shit together when they made this one. I am officially on board this reboot! -

...could actually be described as an alien outfit. It actually has the potential to work here. It could have an actual real-world technology behind it.
It isn't like an 18 year old made this outfit in his bedroom at his aunt and uncle's house in Queens.
-
Yeah yeah I know it's an AICN talkback which means I either need to be a pathetic hater with the cynicism of Stan Marsh at the end of last South Park episode, or some mindless fanboy who can see no wrong in a movie, but here goes an attempt at a rational response upon seeing this picture.
First let me say I'm a HUGE Christopher Reeve Superman fan and yes I even liked Superman Returns even though it fell short, it had some really great classic Superman moments. And I was pretty hit or miss with Smallville but I think Welling did a fantastic job as Clark and there were some moments of the finale that I could watch over and over again when he "puts on" the super suit (the CGI super suit).
Mostly the main thing about Supes that I love is the John Williams score! It truly just screams Superman. Just hearing it, it makes me think that theres a person out there who will literally fly through flames to save me, even though he doesn't even know who I am. And he's not doing it for money, he's not doing it for power or fame, he's not doing it because of some revenge obsession; he's just doing it because he knows it's the right thing to do.
So what does this mean about this upcoming movie? Well let's break it down:
1. No John Williams Score: This one is ALMOST a deal breaker for me. Like I said, the JW Score is iconic; legendary really. It's going to be hard to top. I will say that this is my biggest fear but if they do a good job with the new one and keep the same theme of a true hero score, then it could work just as well. But if anyone from the movie production is reading this (yeah right), make no mistake; you BETTER get the score right or this franchise will die after the first movie.
2. No Superman "Mundies". Yes, I'm bummed about this. Call me crazy, but losing the trunks is almost as bad as changing the colors to black and white (like they were going to do with that supposed Nicolas Cage Superman movie abortion). Just don't mess with the suit! But if you're going to mess with the suit, the one thing you could lose is the mundies. You can't lose the cape, you can't lose the S-shield, you can't lose the boots, and you can't change the primary color scheme. My biggest beef with losing the mundies is .... WHY?! What purpose do you have to lose them? Especially for a Snyder movie! For crap's sake, in 300 the only thing they wore was capes and mundies! You can't tell me Snyder is all of a sudden threatened by drawing attention to mens' junk areas.
3. The "darker" color scheme: This one really doesn't bug me. It's still red-yellow-and blue, and lest we forget, the suit in Supes Returns was slightly darker tones than Chris Reeves' suit and I didn't hear much complaining there. My only concern with the darker colors is that, like I said, Supes is not a "Dark" hero. Never was, never should be. Supes is NOT BATMAN!! I love Batman too, but he serves a different role. Batman appeals to our dark sides. Supes is the character that we all strive to be. Batman is the man each of us actually could be. So I'm ok with the darker suit colors from a mere aesthetic standpoint, but they should be careful to remember that Superman is a HERO, not an anti-hero. Sometimes people just need to see someone who's good for good's sake. I especially think these days when everything is falling to crap, it would be nice to feel that there's someone out there who will always do the right thing.
In short, this picture actually raises my hopes AND my fears for this movie as a long time superman fan. I'm still confident in it because I think Cavill is actually a great actor, I have enjoyed many Snyder movies, and Nolan is producing which can only be good. When Batman Begins came out, many people were skeptical because at the time, everyone thought no one could beat the '89 Batman with Keaton and Nicholson. When Heath Ledger was picked for Joker, almost EVERYONE said there's no way he could be better than Jack Nicholson. Those people were so wrong on both counts. I still love Batman '89, just like I'll still love Donner's Superman and Superman II. But Batman Begins set the bar for Batman movies to come and Dark Knight raised it even higher. Can Nolan (and Snyder) do that with Superman? We'll see. I'll still love Donner's movie no matter what, but there is room in my heart for a new telling of Superman, but only if they do it right.
So basically I'm still in the "wait and see" camp here. But I am pretty confident in saying this: This is either going to be a knock out of the park, fantastic reboot of a great hero, like Batman Begins did for Batman, OR it's going to be the biggest pile of pre-fabricated Hollywood crap that has ever shat itself on the silver screen. In that case Snyder and Nolan better have their bags packed because if they mess up Superman, then all of their future movies are dead to me. -

Every live action version of the costume so far has had the cape either attached way too far in the back of his shoulders (George Reeves) or attached like a kid does when he tucks a towel into the collar of his shirt (Chris Reeve).
As drawn by every good artist since the 1940's, Supes cape is attached Roman style across the top of his pecs. Since the 1940's the cape has attached in the FRONT on his shirt, which has sort of a sailor-style square neck.
That said, this cap finally attaches right but looks pretty freakin' long. -

FLY is WAAAAAAY down the list. Who the fuck are these people saying he looks GOOD?!?!??! He looks as badly cast as Routh (and, fwiw, I like Routh otherwise and I like Cavill as well.)
Why anyone thinks another Superman movie is a good idea is beyond me. Totally. -

Good thing the script is likely to be pretty good...

mundies? I think that's the underwear outside the pants thing..
by darthsaul666
Like what a large number of superheroes wear but makes no sense...
-
I mean, aside from making their packages look bigger than life -- they act as functional jock protection. No, they really don't HAVE to be worn on the outside -- but it's more impressive looking that way. If you have an eye for such things (e.g., like me).

Brighten that shit up! Also, the shiny and textured material makes him look aquatic.
Other than that, love the cape style and classic aesthetic. -

His suit is textured because he's straight outta Krypton.

Which is similar to being hard & from Asgard.

Here I go, answering a question with more seriousness than it was asked with.
Why do superheroes wear their underwear on the outside?
Short answer: Because it highlights the physicality of a character within a context that early 20th century western cultures find familiar.
Longer answer: The physicality of Superman and superheroes in general are a key feature of the genre. To portray this physicality, early comic artists drew from what they knew: circus strongmen and bodybuilding culture. Joe Shuster, the original artist behind Superman, was an actually an amatuer bodybuilding afficianado, and although the leotard-wearing Phantom predates Superman, Shuster's sensibility in this regard was a foundational influence. Trunks are what bodybuilders wore. Back then, it was as close as you could get to being naked in the mainstream. Leotards allowed for further coverage and color, yet still allowed maximum exposure for the naked-but-for-the-trunks physique. -
but maybe it's just from the distance and lighting of this particular shot. I'm not crazy about the raised S shield -- but otherwise, the suit looks okay to me.
-

-
Seriously why are we letting Lady Gaga design the "new" superhero costumes?
-
that was the mistake with casting Routh. He was like a chris Reeves rip-off. Superman doesn't have to be mr. goody-two-shoes camp cancellor in the Reeves mold. we need a more badass Superman for a new generation.
-

Sucker Punch was so bad I shut it off after about thirty minutes
by successor
The WWI trench steampunk soldier scene made me give up; it was nothing but mindless killing of automatons with no real stakes. I'd say it was like a video game, but I've seen video games with better plots and more stakes. Snyder just does coolness for coolness sake and doesn't seem to give a damn about character or plot in a story. He looks and acts like a total dip in interviews--and what's his wife's name tattooed on his arm (seriously, who does that?)
Now he's going to do Superman. Oh great. And from the looks of it, it'll be another slow-motion saturated snoozefest. Furthermore, the costume stinks. It looks like Superman rolled around in an oil slick before he showed up for battle.
And Cavill looks all wrong for the role. Too grim, even constipated. Honestly he looks like he needs to drop a load of brown kryptonite in the nearest toilet ASAP. Christopher Reeve was the definitive Superman and you can't do better than that, no matter how many angry, epic poses you make. -

Tunnel Rats is a surprisingly good movie....
Honestly I'm hot or cold for Zack Snyder. If I have to pick a flick by Hack Snyder that I despise it would be the Dawn of the Dead remake... Yes personally hate that the point about moral philosophy in the original was completely missed. My fave Hack Snyder is Watchmen... I think a lot of folks seemed to forget that comic book was essentially written to inspire hatred for superheroes... That point seemed to come through quite clearly.. -

I find it intriguing that anyone would suggest that they cast someone who does NOT look like Christopher Reeve. Friends... ha' ye not SEEN the comic? (Say that last part with a Scottish accent. It's funnier that way.)
Chris Reeve = the closest human representation of the character as drawn. If you look for someone who doesn't look like Reeve, you're essentially looking for someone who doesn't look like FUCKING SUPERMAN. Ye daft prune. -

Great. So you're saying the textured, scaly, weird-ass suit is like slipping us a roofie so we won't mind the date rape later?
I feel so much better now.
So anyone know what they're doing about the story, so I won't mind when this is a total fucking failure? Are they going to tell me that unicorns are real in the beginning? NO, WAIT, I KNOW, they're going to show the documents that say that JFK WAS assassinated by his own government. Or something like that... cause they're going to have to REALLY loosen me up for this monstrosity to become palatable for me.
Bottom line: going to be waiting for RedBox on this one. -
Looks like it was influenced more by Lee Bermejo that Jim Lee. See: Lex Luthor, Man Of Steel.
Theres some red texture up the side of the leg, probably replacing the panties? -
Just as much as George Reeves is for the original Superman fan's. I will go see this movie as I did Superman Returns. What makes the original Superman movies/tv shows with George and Chris ( as well as Dean Cain) are how patriotic they made Superman be. Truth, Justice, and the American way. What bugged me the most out of Superman Returns was how they changed "American way" to "all that stuff". I wanted to go and smack the director for that one. Forget the stupid plot etc.. Now this movie may be a great movie on its own merit, filled with amazing CGI, however the acting mixed in with a patriotic story is what I want to see. Without the "American way" being the driving force for good that Superman stands for, the movie simply will be heading to the same place the comics have gone. Superman in the comics recounced his citizenship. If this movie takes that position, I will walk out of the theater.
-
Since you have admitted to being one of the annoying fucks who partook in the d.vader dabacle(more annoying than goddamn you micheal bay?) my hatred now sets it's hooks into the ghost flesh under your brain's armpits. If you attempt to say anything fresh in defense against the dressing down I will now bestow upon you- I will say something so horrible it may reframe your perceptions of reality to such a degree that you may not wish to continue living. I'm just fucking around. You guys are fun. How bout that superman? Let's hope he doesn't knock up anymore hapless humans and then abandon them. Still- one has to wonder what a spinoff franchise based on that kid would have been like. He's always tormented by the piano murder. His asthma comes back when he's feeling insecure around women. He likes pink and doesn't know why
-
You and d.vader were both completely wrong and out of line with your thinking. The ban was not only justifiable but nobody has fucked around in obituaries since. Quite effective.
-
routh wasnt embarassing but he was a damp squib. cavill looks like he has some steel as supes and could have some charisma as clark.
-
Sorry but as much I didnt like it back then, I like the Superman returns outfit better.
-
He looks like he could go toe to toe with the Thunder God. His cape looks regal, and the suit still looks like a superman suit, just a bit darker but not morose or muted, and the HUGE ASS 'S' Shield is awesome. I am a huge Superman fan, and I actually enjoyed Superman Returns for what it was, a love letter to the Donner films, but this , this looks like it is going to kick my ass, and it better.

what a piece of shit that was. His style belongs in MTV music videos that shallow idiot teens with rotting brains can enjoy. I'll take good writing & storytelling with obvious fake looking models that are used to move the story along rather than some fancy looking CGI razzle dazzle without a soul where the minimal story is built to move the visuals along. I had faith in Zack until Suckerpunch, because now that I've seen 3 of his movies it has formed a more complete picture of what Snyder is all about and I don't see a need for him as a director when the CGI artists are the ones making the movie, same goes for George Lucas.
-
Aug 05, 2011 2:31:54 AM CDT
Seriously, what does he do with the Cape when he's in his Clark Disguise?
by somerichs
Especially that huge ass cape in the pick? It ain't under his clothes, that's for damn sure...
-
Tried to find them using saturation /contrast levels in Photoshop... nothing. He really doesn't appear to be wearing the trunks!! Also, notice the raised details on the wrists, outer thighs, below ribs... there's def a lot more going on with this suit than this first pic would have us believe. Judgement reserved.
-
Looks pretty much like the SUPERMAN RETURN costume just with a bigger S and more scaly texture. Still dark colors but now Supes looks menacing and rubbery. I thought this reboot was because SUPERMAN RETURNS was a failure, yet the look of Snyder’s Superman feels the same. But what worries me more is this whole feel of being “dark” like Nolan’s Batman. If this Supes is going to be following Nolan’s formula then this movie is going to fail miserable. Superman is not dark or edgy; he’s supposed to be what’s good in mankind. He’s the total opposite of Bats-a dark and scary mysterious brooding figure, a Dark Knight. While Superman is a shining beacon of hope and champion of truth and justice, the Big Blue Boy Scout
Then you have the Christopher Reeve SUPERMAN (which to me will ALWAYS be the one true SUPERMAN ) you know people will be doing some comparisons, and YES! I did compare them. And the feeling I got from both is not the same. The “Dark” Superman would make me shit my pants whether I was a criminal or innocent bystander, while the Reeve’s Superman would make me stop in my tracks in awe no matter who I would be. Someone mentioned this when comparing the Snyder Supes with Christopher Reeve Superman about which one would make you smile; Reeve Superman makes me feel like a kid again, and Snyder’s … makes me cringe a bit. I’m hoping that its at least decent but I’m not liking the feel of this at all.
-
Routh was better, but i guess this one is good.
-
I looked at this and thought "looks great but someone will find fault once again". Yep, pretty much. You people have no idea what looks good. Period. And yes the new Spiderman suit is also great. You people have no fucking taste.
-
You REEK of insecurity.
Just so ya know.
: ) -
Having Nolan associated makes me actually excited for a superhero movie other than a batman flick.
-
I think this is gonna be bad ass.
-
Looks absurd.
Why wear a cape anyway?
And he should be bald, too.
I doubt I'll be able to sleep tonight worrying about the length of his hair.
Only my 12-inch limited edition Han Solo action figure will be able to console me through the dark sleepless hours that lie ahead. -
If Mark Millar's thing gets made it'll shame this pile of shit.
Millar should have been allowed to write the Supes movie, and a geniune talent should have been found to star in it.
DC/Warner should lose all rights to the character now. They've failed.
Again. -
You mean a generation of idiots? You mean a generation who uses Twitter and has lost the art of the written word? Or the generation of mouthbreathers who are dazzled by garbage like The Jersey Shore and Transformers?
You sir, chien_sale, are an idiot and completely miss the fucking POINT of Superman.
Take your 'badass' and go watch UFC, I'm sure that's more in line with what you expect from Superman. -
Supes sported a fucking mullet at one point so seriously, shut the fuck up about the hair. At least this version actually looks like the kind of hero who'd whisper, 'Burn', before incinerating a bad guy.
-
Horrible. Reeve was incredible, the suit was fucking terrible. TOO bright and cheap looking. It always looked like a costume rental. While I don't advocate darker colours, I prefer a toned down colour palette to the Reeve suit.

I love how some of you dipshits overuse the meme (Troll) when in fact they happen to be the ones trolling. Point in case, it was you who stirred the shit when replying to my post about Zac's music choices.
Ergo, I promptly responded to your obnoxious post with a touch of abserbic comments.
Me being a Sexist because I called BJork a Bitch? Well, it's justified as she is as untalented as Kate Bush. Oh, and as for PM 5000, hmmm I don't seem to recall Spider physically attacking some reporter in a Airport unlike Batshit Bjork. (Yeah, She's a REAL human being.) Didn't know that she wrote that "Army of me" song, but thanks for enlighting me you twa..er, I meant twit. It's obvious that Powerman's version wasn't in the film b/c as far as I know, they don't sound efeminate (0:'
Regardless, Powerman's version sound much better. My music tastes are very diverse from The Motown Sound to The Misfits. (Fuck you very much.) And no doubt the majority of stuff I listen to, are far superior than BJork.
Powerman is basically NU Metal for Geeks, mostly due to the name dropping of Comicbook characters from well known villians (Dr. Doom) to the obscure Superheroes (Machine Man) so yeah, these fuckers are deserving of props.
Rob zombie wannabees, you say?
I guess Spider was influenced by his older Brother Robert Cummings AKA Rob Zombie. "Duh"!
OK Goldendiatribe, I'm done with you until the next battle. cause you know how we "Trolls" like to stir up shit.

No, it's pretty bad ass. He could stand next to Bale's Batman and not look like a drag queen. Like the long cape.

That looks amazingly like the suit they had Cage in, only worse.

I'm really stunned that people are digging this. Looks awful. Shiny and scaly with a 15' cape is no way to go through life, son. -
Ha, God totally right, my mind was elsewhere. Yup that Maroon really looked shitty on the Superman Returns costume. Just wasn't Superman.

Look, I'll see the damn thing because I even suffered through those 90's "Batman" movies, each time hoping maybe, just maybe, they'd base it on Batman.
But...this ain't good.
I'm still utterly baffled why they're not using Tom Welling. It's the most painfully obvious thing in the world to have them switch over to movies now that the show's done. Write it fairly continuity free for new people.
Heck-even just use some of the same actors, in a somewhat new continuity.
But why would you have someone so utterly perfect as Clark...the first person who just looks like and embodies him perfectly that they've ever had. Why would you have that, then instead hire...this guy?
And what's up with that costume?
Oh well, I loved Watchmen... -
Fighting hair crimes everywhere
-
Ugh. He's fucking terrible.
He's a TV movie of the week actor at best.
Is he likeable? YES!
Is he Superman? NO!
I'm so tired of the Welling bullshit.
Smallville was awful, laughable, anything but good, and Welling did his part and now that part is done.
And you're saying Welling is better than Reeve?
That's some kind of fucked right there... -
I really wish they'd come up with something without the rubbery basketball texture though... it's like one guy is designing all these costumes... is this all they can come up with?
-
Aug 05, 2011 11:18:02 AM CDT
All I know is, I am way less concerned about the suit than I am of Zach Snyder’s job as director.
by astronut
Name one film he has done that has had heart. I can’t think of a single one.

-

Wish the color of the suit was bumped up a little. Really drab.
by astronut
It's obvious they are going after the darker, muted color vibe. Typical Zach Snyer. Drab.
-
The design looks good, he looks decent, colors could be brighter, but the fabric- ew. Very creepy and perverted looking.
-
His suit looks like fondant.
-
There was a certain Peter Jackson film coming out the same month.
-
Warner Bros. is releasing both films, and didn't want two of their big tent poles to compete with each other, so Superman has the Summer of 2013 staked out.
-
See if any of you geeks know who that is without Googling it.
-
"Faster than a speeding bullet", except in this shot, and this shot, and this shot, and this shot, and this shot...
-
But looking at it-the drab colors, the things on the thighs, the texture, the long cape, I'm almost 100% certain that thus is a snyderfied version of the Earth One suit...
-
I work all day on my hair and Pa Kent hits it!

...done with photos of actors and cgi backgrounds. Saw it in forbidden planet comic shop in Dublin once and skimmed through it, it was weird and crap, like the photo above!!
does anyone remember it? -
The fact that he is bald seemed a bit obvious and is not what I was talking about. What I was talking about was the way he attacked the question from the reporter and cameraman in the interview. The way he just owned them as though he were enlightened and above them. His attitude that made these people seem like insignificant, annoying, low IQ nothings compared to him. That, combined with the obvious bald head, allowed me to see him in a certain way. I saw Lex Luthor. So please, remove hand from face.
-
It's that he's got a high, receding hairline which makes him look older and, frankly, not very Superman-like.
It looks like someone at a convention dressed like Superman, but without the classic, chiseled and thick (not big)-haired look.
Reeve had it, Routh had it. Hell, Welling and Cain had it. This guy has a billboard forehead. Along with the poofy 'fro and less-than-attractive face, it just looks all wrong to me.
I'm not declaring anything major, of course (I don't do that). It could be a great movie. But I've seen better-looking (and more accurate) actors who could've landed the part.
This is like someone's uncle playing Superman.
:D -
Too damn poofy, wavy and "styled". It kinda looks ridiculous (along with the aforementioned six acres of forehead).
Good grief, he looks like Carmine Ragusa from "Laverne & Shirley".
:(
Or Marc Anthony (who whoever the hell Jennifer Lopez would married too...little Skeletor-looking fella).
This is the best they could do, casting/appearance-wise? Hard to believe. Was the casting call/tryouts limited to 45 minutes? -
He has said in interviews that it was the best they could do with the fabrics available at the time, but he hated all the seams showing because it really pulls you out of the movie because you can see some old lady with a sewing machine making it. At least they made the boots viewable by having ones with zippers in different places depending upon the shot they were doing.
But this movie has a long hill to climb because Zack Snyder is directing it. He has a very bad track record.
But if SUPERMAN III can't kill off the series, nothing can! Any creative attempt is fair game and the box office will decide... -
Both keys... AT THE SAME TIME?!?!
-
Source?
-
like Routh? go watch American Idol and Gossip girl, faggot! Superman doesn't have to be Christopher fucking Reeves! When he was created he was far more an action hero and far more badass like a real man. learn to not being ignorant.
-
IF YOU DESATURATE HIM IT ISN'T COOL. IT'S LAME. HE NEEDS TO BE BRIGHT. FUCK OFF. THE MOVIE WILL BE A ONE NOTE WONDER.

Time to step out of the shadow of Donner's film.

That is actually the first thing I thought when I saw this. Didn't think anyone here would know who he was though. Go Skins!
