Win One Of Five Copies Of Pyun's BULLETFACE!! Look Upon A NEMESIS v2.0 FX Reel!! Pre-Order TALES OF AN ANCIENT EMPIRE!!

Published at:  Mar 12, 2010 12:12:33 PM CST

Merrick here...

...with an opportunity for you to receive one of 5 (FIVE) copies of BULLETFACE, the Albert Pyun film recently discussed in THIS article.

For a sense of this prize's contents, here's a look at the set's packaging (font/back):

You should know that Albert dropped me a note indicating that he'd...

...personalize each winner's disc with a note to them to go with an autograph (if they want one!)

Pretty cool.

As BULLETFACE is being released somewhat unconventionally, coverage of the film is slow to diffuse. Still, there are already a few reviews for you to take a look at if you wanna learn more about this movie. These write-ups are generally positive, to quite positive, and can be found HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE. I haven't seen this yet myself, but I'm looking forward to checking it out.

How do you win this? It's pretty simple:

So, what do you gotta do to get it? It's simple - but please read carefully.

** Sometime between the time you read this and 11:59 PM CST USA on Tuesday March 16, send an e-mail to me via the link below. You can enter once daily for each of the contest's five days (which = five entries total).

** Include your name and mailing address in this e-mail. The address is to expedite prize shipment only and will be summarily discarded once book recipients are chosen. No spam, no mailing lists, etc.

** CONTEST IS OPEN TO INTERNATIONAL READERS!!!

** Be sure to send from an ACTIVE (and frequently checked) E-MAIL ACCOUNT. If I try to reach you & my message bounces back? I'll trash your win and move on to the next closest winning contestant I can reach.

** I've already pre-selected ONE time of day between today (Friday) and Tuesday (five days, one set awarded per day). The person who e-mails me at (or closest to) one of these pre-selected times will receive a DVD set. NOTE: I've been asked this before, so...for clarity...I'm using whatever time is stamped on the Yahoo mailing address established for this contest as the determiner. I'm in Central Time USA, so I guess that's a CST time stamp (?).

** The five recipients will be announced next week.

** Albert & Co. will have your addresses in hand Tuesday morning & they've been kind enough to handle fulfillment in this contest.

** As a general FYI, you should know that...due to the number and frequency of entries...recipients in past contests were sometimes selected by matters of seconds. Literally.

** If you don't want your name and state announced on this site, say so in your entry.

Also, while the following answer won't impact whether or not you win the contest (the results of which are completely luck-of-the-draw), be sure to indicate in your e-mail whether or not you're a fan of (or interested in) Pyun's NEMESIS.

Albert's in the process of working-up a special edition of that film - which is previewed via the embed below. Please know that not all of the effects in this reel represent the final product...especially later on the reel. Some are more-or-less finished & refined, others are still works in progress. Still, this gives us a really good sense of what kind of work is being done to update/restore this 1992 film. Which, if all goes well, should be finished later this year.

NEMESIS v2.0 Teaser Promo from Albert Pyun on Vimeo.

So, if you dig NEMESIS, say the word and...if you're a BULLETFACE winner...there be a little something else for you in your prize pack.

So, all you have to do to enter is...

SHOOT ME AN E-MAIL!!!

Finally, TALES OF AN ANCIENT EMPIRE - a psuedo-sequel to 1982's THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER - will soon be up for pre-sale
HERE! Pre-sales begin March 23, and discs will ship immediately after TALES' premiere in select theaters on April 23. You can get a sense of TALES from some of the images we ran HERE.

Good luck, enjoy, and have fun!

I Actually LIKE Nemesis, but this idea is lame

    by california split

It's not the quality of the effects, it's the cluttered, busy-body, extraneous needlessness of it all. The fun of Nemesis is Pyun slinging his camera everywhere to distract from the fact he was working with $2.50. This is like the straight-to-video version of George Lucas' Star Wars revisions.

    by redegiraahgnal

...and I don't care about any of the prizes. I don't hate Pyun. He popped up once at Vern's websight and acted like a nice, humble and realistic guy, so it's nothing personal, but I just don't care for his movies.

Mr. Pyun: if you are reading this...

    by angry white baby

I would say that you may want to go to fanedit.org and check out what individuals at their homes have done, especially Adywan's STAR WARS: REVISITED edit. The key is not going too far with the changes and creating ones that still blend in or enhance what is already there. The tentacle out of the head and the end city stuff come as too distracting and not really necessary (giving her a glowing red eye or even the BLADE RUNNER back-lit eye the replicants had would probably be enough to get the point that she's a killer robot). The alleyway also looked much better "as is" without the floating robot POV and CGI cam. The one thing that did work I think REALLY well was the shootout... didn't need the extraneous flying things, but seeing the bullets coming at the hero was a subtle add that I think improved the action of the scene. If you do things like that (slight enhancements), it will be fantastic and not a betrayal of your original work.

Maybe you could also call it NEMESIS: ENHANCED and create a new title sequence, as opposed to just tagging on the v2.0 below the original title.

And as always, including a version of the unmolested original is a must as well.

Regardless, if you are reading, please post your comments and let us know what you think!

    It's Albert Pyun

    by albertpyun

Hi Jawbone -- My hope is to get some free copies of the film out so people might view at no cost (except their time) and give me some feedback. I included a revised version of Left For Dead: Inferno which tries to address the many comments about what didn't work in its initial release version. Its all an attempt to make the films I do better. I think when the Tales of an Ancient Empire clips start going up in early April, I think Talkbackers will see how their comments on the four Tales clips from October caused the film to be entirely revamped with new shooting that added requested elements and characters. We've worked hard to improve editing and the look as well. I am grateful to AICN and the talkbackers for this opportunity and forum to improve the qualtiy of my films (if its humanly possible to improve them!).

    by albertpyun

Okay. I'll do that. I'll try to post entire sequences so you can see the upgrade in context. What I really didn't like about the original cut, which wasn't my cut, was how the set up of the world was not very detailed. I think to really enjoy these fictional worlds a solid foundation needs to be in place. Now the first scene of the original actually comes about 8 minutes into the film. There's more in the beginning concerning LAPD and what the overall plan is by Farnsworth (Thomerson) and his group.

thanks for the reply (and so quick)!

    by angry white baby

Just keep in mind how it plays out... that is why I suggested viewing those other fan edits as a means of seeing how subtlety can improve a movie without ruining it. I still think the flying things in the background aren't necessary as they still seem to be thrown in. If you want to make it more futuristic, make it more subtle, such as adding some lighting onto the factory during the gunfight, or a highway of flying cars in the far distance during the alleyway scene. I would also suggest getting suggestions from here as well as at fanedit.org and possibly talking to Boon23 about creating a edit page describing what you are doing. The bottom line is that fans like myself want this to be the best, as we've all seen how Lucas wound up bastardizing the original STAR WARS just by throwing things in for the sake of it.

I know NEMESIS isn't STAR WARS, but please, don't be a Lucas! >:)

Another place to get some really good feedback is originaltrilogy.com. They have a section for non-STAR WARS related edits, where you can create a thread for feedback and ideas.

Also consider the color timing or adding a slight filter to the sky (see the movie HARDWARE for examples). Again, subtlety is the key.

    by revenge_of_fett

I think it looks cool. I can understand what you are saying though Angry White Baby. The big difference between this and Star Wars (and yes Revisited is awesome), is that although Star Wars was low-budge, it had plenty going on all over the place. Adding all that stuff, particularly the new noises and whole new vignettes, absolutely distracted from the core story. Nemesis always felt barren. That worked to its credit in a lot of ways, but I think bringing the production value up to the story's calibur is a good idea.Of course it would probably be a better idea to just remake it with a bigger budget. ;)

    Hey, Revenge_of_Fett!
LOVED your script. I haven't had a chance to tell you, but its really terrific writing. Cynthia loved it as well. I've had scripts by David Goyer (Dark Knight) and Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) and yours is right up there. I know its only 45 pages but look forward to reading the longer version.

Frankobastid & Read and Shut Up

    by albertpyun

I think you're a little unfair to Fett. He and I exchanged a few emails where he was very clear and explicit about his positions and feelings about my films and filmmaking in general. I think our discussion was frank. He brought up a particularly good point about the frustration yet unknown screenwriters and filmmakers feel. It certainly made me think about why my films get made while far more deserving others don't. I think he had very strong arguments about why my films are detested. So there wasn't any ass kissing but I think we exchanged points of view. That's what, for me, these talkbacks are all about. As an example of his and other's frustration he sent me a script for a short. It was really good and certainly made me realize there was substance behind his comments.

Albert- Thanks for getting on the boards and taking the time to respond back to everybody on here. I'm not hating to hate. I just don't get why AICN would keep pimping your movies. Don't get me wrong, I haven't seen too many of them since the Sword and the Sorcerer (which I loved as early teen/pre-teen). It just seems like the posts would have been a one-time thing because, honestly, I don't think your movies jive with most taste of AICN folks. Maybe I'm wrong.

Love your movies. Nemesis is one of my all time favorites, Oliver rules in that (as he always does). I think the new establishing shot you showed looked fake though, it looked like a cut scene from a game, especially the first few seconds with the cars in the forefront. Please include a cleaned up, un-altered version of nemesis on the release too, my VHS of it died years ago. Also, re-releasing the sequel would be great too.

    by albertpyun

But my hope is AICN is trying to cover the full spectrum of genre films, even if I'm way down near the hazy edge of relevance. Plus I've done (yes, poorly) a few genre films like TS&TS, Captain America, Cyborg and the aforementioned Nemesis that have their fans, albeit small in number. Those films do span a few generations so maybe that's where the interest comes from. Hell, it's a mystery to me that I've even made 50 feature films in 29 years! I do believe with the help of these TB's I can make better movies that might just jive with the taste of readers of AICN. Or, if my track record is any indication, likely not. But we can hope for the best.

    As I told Cynthia...

    by revenge_of_fett

I've only seen 4 of your films Al, and I liked 3 (Nemesis, Dollman, Cyborg). The one I really didn't like was Captain America, although Cyntia explained to me that 50% of your budget got cut at the last second and you were under a legal obligation to finish. But Nemesis was really low budget and I love that movie so I think there were more problems with that movie than the financing. But thank you Albert for even reading my script. You certainly didn't have to do that. And comparing me with great screenwriters is very flattering.I'm doing research now in preparation for finishing the script in a way I think will enrich the story I set out to tell. And I really do think your enhancements to Nemesis look cool. Man I haven't seen that movie in a long time so I'm looking forward to checking out your new version. I have to agree with others that you should definitely include the original version alongside it though.

Some of Albert's films fall in the guilty pleasure zone, for me. I dig about 15 of his almost 50 movies, I've seen about all his movies. I wish they had some of the ones I really want on DVD. I'm waiting for: Brain Smasher, Knights, Spitfire, Raven Hawk, Blast. Albert, if you are involved, when they are ever released, please record a commentary track and BTS pictures and or video.

    Pyun's Guam havoc

    by sleazzy

In 2003 producer John Laing and notable (for all the wrong reasons) director Albert Pyun convinced the government of Guam to invest $800,000 for the filming of Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon. Laing and Pyun touted that the film would create 300 jobs on the impoverished island, and that those individuals would get the chance to work again when they shot a sequel later in 2004. They even promised a third film for the following year. Guam bent over backwards for these goofs, with businesses big and small offering their assistance in order to further develop Guam's economy. According to some, Laing and Pyun actually suggested that the film would receive a theatrical release. Okay everyone, get ready for a countdown. 3, 2, 1.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Guam's motivation for funding the film was economic development. In the end the crew members from both the U.S. and Guam were never paid. Once Laing's company officially defaulted on the loan, financial shenanigans occurred that ended with Guam making a mere $9,000 from the deal. Laing's Up North Entertainment, meanwhile, managed to buy the film back from the bank that paid off the loan for $83,000. Someone went to the Tanya York School of Business. David Carradine, Richard Roundtree, and Carmen Electra (for about 15 seconds) all appear…

Somebody else here said in their comments that Albert Pyun couldn't direct his way out of a paper bag, that's wrong. Albert Pyun and John Laing couldn't direct or produce their way out of a pay toilet.

I wish some of these could get a widescreen re-release on DVD. They were all shot in the 2:35 format. If they ever do get re-released I'll be sure to record the commentary. Not sure if BTS material exist any longer, but you can see some for a terrible movie -- Ticker with Seagal, Dennis Hopper, Jaime Pressley, Nas, Tom sizemore. A weird cast for sure. That footage can be seen at www.albertpyunmovies.com and its much better than the film unfortunately.
