Albert Pyun Has A Special Offer For AICN Readers!! Behold - BULLETFACE!!
Merrick here...
Here's something to tide over all the Albert Pyun followers patiently awaiting TALES OF AN ANCIENT EMPIRE. His movie BULLETFACE is now available via a special AICN-dedicated page HERE. As a special "thank you" to Talkbackers, Albert wanted to extend a special 50% off coupon code - "aicbullet50" - which can be used at check-out.
BULLETFACE's logline reads thusly:
A dirty DEA agent is sprung from prison and given a 60 hour furlough to avenge the murder of her brother by bringing down drug lords who are peddling a DNA altering drug derived from human spinal fluid. The bodies and addicts are pilling up along the US / Mexico border.
Here are a few words from Albert regarding about what drew him towards the project, and what he set out to accomplish with the film.
Why did I want to make Bulletface? Well, when I first read Randall Fontana's script I was drawn to the way he created a kind of throwback to the B movie noir crime thrillers of the 1940's and 50's. As Eddie Muller defines in his “Film Noir” primer:
“...its the flipside of the American Success story. It's about people who realize that following the program will never get them what they crave. So they cross the line, commit a crime and reap the consequences...they depict a world that's merciless and unforgiving.”
“Noir is about the dark, swampy dark place in the soul where crime ferments.”
That description is very much Bulletface and it is what drew me to the material initially. I really wanted it to be, stylistically, like a contemporary version of those great B crime thrillers from the poverty gulch studios of the time like Monogram. They were shot fast (Bulletface was shot in 5 days), shot on the cheap (Bulletface cost just a bit less than $100,000) and shot with a lot of creative desperation which mirrors the plights of the Bulletface characters.
The great appeal of these films was that they had characters that were generally unredeemable and very bad. It was shades of black not gray. These were hard eyed, sensationalistic films. Precurors to the exploitation movies of the 1960's and 70's.
So I wanted a lurid tone. A movie a little scruffy and ragged with sharp edges. A movie that would follow one person's 2 year descent into Hell.
I was also looking for something to star Victoria Maurette, the young Argentine star of my gothic horror western, “Left For Dead”. I wanted to bring her tough, sullen quality into a more contemporary setting. She got one of the more remarkable faces I've ever had before my camera. It's exotic, petulant and beautiful in a rough and street-wise way. Clearly not a Hollywood starlet type.
Bulletface was originally written with a male lead. A traditional silently coiled man. I thought casting Victoria in the part would open up its possibilities. I kept the romantic and sexual connections the same. So her relationships we're with women but clearly she was bi-sexual. Victoria brought a sexy earthiness into the role that made you understand her character's preference for female companionship.
With that in mind, here's a trailer:

Mulchavey(sp) film noir direct-to-DVD for a couple of months now...has anyone seen it?
-
It's a pretty fun movie. I liked it. Ving Rhames is awesome in it! Of course Thomas Jane is too. It's a good noir action comedy. You should check it out!Interesting thing is that it ends with a "to be continued" though I'm kinda doubtful they will ever make a sequel or if they were even serious about it (don't worry it has a conclusion).
-
Just in case anyone is confused.
-
That is some seriously basement budget filmmaking. If I make a paper mache cockroach out fit and film myself chasing after my brother for 90 minutes, can I have a dedicated page on AICN too?
-
I echo Cinemanimetal's take on it. The only thing in it that is laughable is Doug Hutchison as Matchstick. That guy is in a different movie, namely Punisher WarZone, since Matchstick is pretty much Looney Bin Jim meets Fire Marshall Bill. But it is a fun ride worth a little bit of your time.
-
But dear God what happened to Pyun's movies? Tommy Wisseu better wtach out.
-
Awesome!
-
100% horrid...AICN is pimping home movies right on FETT...
God this site is becoming more and more shit...and they aint listening... -
Terrible movie,i had to stop it at 45/50 minutes aprox.
Was just too boring.
-
jeez

-
This looks like something that belong under the Cinematic Shrimp banner. If the film had been made by an aspiring amateur with limited knowledge and experience, I would applaude the effort, and the fact that AICN writes about it. But it is not. So there won't be any applause.
-
This looks like exactly the same story, right down to the name of the drug.
-
qualities that makes it possible to see beyond the bad acting and terrible visual effects displayed in the trailer. It is after all, just a trailer. But I doubt it.
-
I was thinking, what does Butterface have to do with a cop movie? And then when I saw the trailer title, only then did I realize it's Bulletface.
-
The trailer reeks of awfulness. The dialogue and acting are laughable. The emo music is distracting. It's so loud and pronounced that it gets turned down when another batch of bad dialogue crops up.
-
However, the first episode of CB was far better scripted and acted than this uninspired garbage. Speaking of garbage, I love Nemesis. That being said, this looks shit and it appears the lead actress is too tough for a bra?
-
Had to be said...
-
Buying it! Thanks AICN...
-
Does Albert Pyun have a degenerative brain disease? Even "Captain America" at least looked somewhat competent. Also, did they just take the sound from the on-board mic of whatever shitty HD camera they were using at the time?
-
I picture him farting and accidentally shitting himself constantly.
-
He was a Producer or something on a string of upcoming shitfests. The first was called Ghost Town or something. He gave us an endless string of "It's so tough being a famous Producer" monologues....then nothing. I assume the plug got pulled? I sure would have liked to listen in on that phone call."Mr. Knowles, we've been going through your notes here.....and it's all shit. I mean everything you've come up with is utter garbage. I don't care if you send megan Fox to my house hopped up on roofies, there's no way I'm greenlighting this shit."
-
Hi Talkbackers,
I get what you're saying about this film. You're right in that its a Nemesis, Sword or even Tales level film. But what I was trying to do was something a little different, not terribly commercial but there were things I wanted to explore. I've always done some smaller experimental things mixed in with the more overt commercial shit like Ticker or Captain America. Those are very restrictive situations with many cooks and sometimes I just feel like going out there, at a reasonable cost, and making a film I would find interesting to watch. So Bulletface (what is the fascination with "Butter") I went out and shot this in 5 days with a very dedicated group of actors and crew. We knew we were skirting the edges between success and failure. I tell you what, let me see if I can wrangle 5 free DVD special editions for the talkbackers here and then you can decide. Would there be any interest in getting Bulletface (and Left For Dead Inferno) for free? At least the music CD's are great!

I read about this WEEKS ago at mediasaurs.com. Where the hell have you guys been?
-
We aren't swayed by free swag.Nemesis was cool though, I'll give you that.
-
How about getting Nemesis on Blu-ray? I'd snatch that shit up.
-
Seriously, I love Nemesis. A true all time favorite of mine. As a younger man I even dabbled in writing and drawing a direct sequel back when I pretended I was going to aspire to be a sequential artist. Alas. I was hoping for Max and Alex to return in the sequel. Nemesis 2 was not my cup-o-tea but she was beautiful to watch in motion. I couldn't make it through the first Left for Dead but I should give it a whirl. Dollman is great fun. As I said, this new one just isn't doing it for me. The blatant Cowboy Bebop rip is really a killer for me. Good luck though. I think I might Nemesis again tonight matter of fact.
-
Sure most of your films are shit (Dollman and Cyborg are ok), you're livin' the fuckin' dream man! You're supporting yourself and your family by making movies! So no matter what we say on here, you fuckin' WIN!
-
HFS. Nemesis on Blu-ray would be so glorious. What a must buy. Make is so Mr. Pyun!
-
Decisions decisions...

While my brain is a little light in brain cells these days and whats there ain't firing terribly well any more, I did try to use the best HD Flip camera I could find -- kidding, but not by much (on either subject). We definitely had some tech issues as I'm still getting use to the digital filmmaking style. I made some tech errors and yeah, the sound is a bit ragged due to the 5 day shooting schedule in LA. Bu, beyond liking the mileau, I've tried focuings on two things that I clearly had issues with in the past, character and coherent storytelling. I just really tried to make one of those old fashion B crime thrillers in a gritty, Mean Streets style.
In terms of where I get my budgets, I do what all indy artists do which is to plead and beg and sell blood. Its not much complicated than that. And I don't make movies for fame or fortune. But i'm just doing what i've been lucky (heavy accent on luck, not talent) to be able to do since I was ten. And yeah, I probably still make movies like a ten year old.
By the way, brain burp caused me to forget the "NOT" like Nemesis, Sword, etc level. Bulletface isn't for everyone for sure. Not a tentpole or focus group in sight. But if 5 of you talkbackers are willing to potentially throw away 90 minutes you'll never get back, I might arrange for the freebies sent to you.
Who has 90 minutes of their life to piss away?
Albert
www.albertpyunmovies.com -
Jeez, I've never seen it. I think I heard of it but if there's any ripping off, well, I just got lucky!
On the Nemesis -- there's rumblings. I actually started a 2.0 upgrade of the original Nemesis but enhancing the film with today's CGI. I'll post the first ten minutes or so of that effort on my website or maybe here if they have an interest. Its very cool to see all those scenes fully loaded with CGI.
Best,
Albert

Albert, ya got balls to come here and plead your case
by revenge_of_fett
So that earns you some cred. Being humble about your resume is also good. But I can tell you right now that you're wasting your time. Even in the extreme unliklihood that this film is actually worth sitting through, nobody would ever actually admit it in the talkbacks. And if they end up liking it enough to buy it....they already have it.Plus trying to defend that trailer is like running around with a bucket during Katrina. All you're going to do is get upset.Hey, you're a modern day Ed Wood. Tim Burton made a movie about that guy. Best to just get back to what you do worst, but I'm sure enjoy and leave us talkbackers to our cruel jokes at your expense.Just sayin'.
-
You actually did well. CGIing up Nemesis will absolutely erase the shred of credibility you have left.
-
do you think Joe will let me sneak onto the Cap set to shoot one of my 3 day movies for free? When I was devloping a Superman movie in the 80's I was toying with this idea of a Superman in his 50's who's out of shape and sort of forgotten because there isn't much "big time" crime around anymore. As we watched him, we wonder if he really is Superman. He's pot bellied, depressed and lives in his past, pining over Lois and Lana. He finally commts suicide by opening a lead box we've seen on his nightstand. Its kryptonite. Obviously my version of Superman went no where with the studio - lol.
-
It didn't work for GitS so color me very apprehensive. I'll stick with the original but I'll look at some footage if you post it on your site. Who knows? If you release it on Blu with the original untouched version then I'll buy it.
-
I loved Cyborg when I was a kid. After watching JCVD at Fantastic Fest I went and watched it again, and still have much love for it. I would give this movie a shot, send me a copy and I will definately give it a look.
-
In the interview you did for Mediasaurs here - http://tinyurl.com/y88peba - you say there will be brutality and sexual aggression towards women. Just how much nudity and sex can we expect? Will it be the R-rated type or the NC-17 type?
-
Try this one http://tinyurl.com/yzu65c5
-
...I'll watch Sword and the Sorcerer at least twice a year, every year, until the day I die. And sure, I like some of the others, but SatS stands with just She as the most baroque over-the-top fantasy riffs to pop out in that post Conan deluge. So if you're reading this, Albert...thanks.
-
I admire your honesty and, although I may be alone in this, I am damn curious about seeing that CGI in Nemesis.... perhaps a DVD re-release with the option to turn the effects on or off, like the Star Trek TOS DVDs?
-
... and I would definitely have 90 minutes to spare on an Albert Pyun movie....
-
Bulletface, if rated, would be NC-17. It is in AntiChrist territory with regard to extremely graphic sexual content and, in the penal colony sequences, sexual brutality towards women (by men and women). i'm not sure it would get a NC-17 because of the copious amounts of sex and nudity.
With regards to Nemesis 2.0, I think when I get it uploaded in the next couple weeks you can judge for yourself but I think we really enhanced and improved every shot we worked on.
And, Revenge_of_Fett -- I wish it were a joke but I my head was in dark places and I always enjoyed the 60's comics when comic heroes died. That sort of fatalistic outlook.
I really wanted my Superman to be about how disposable heroes (or really anyone) are in our society and once they can't seem to find their footing anymore, depression and frustration sets in.
Albert
www.albertpyunmovies.com -
That's how I'll upload it, before and after.
albert -
Sin duda, baby. I got that 90 minutes too.
-
That's not really winning you any points Al.
-
One thing about these smaller more experimental efforts, ya gotta haul the bucket no matter how futile in support. And knowing full well there will be plenty of cruel jokes. But if a filmmaker wants to avoid cruel jokes at their expense, they're in the wrong business.
Albert
www.albertpyunmovies.com -
Well, its a very dark and twisted world in Bulletface. This dirty DEA Agent played by Victoria Maurette comes out of prison pretty fucked in the head and is sideways with rage in dealing with the world in the 60 hours she has in it. Its messy.
-
...really, no one's asking you to keep score. You've made abundantly clear that you don't care for Pyun's work. Your opinion has been duly noted. Feel free to move on.
-
...considering 99% of this board is ripping you three new ones (one of which you can drive an F-150 through), you're being amazingly cool and open about your film. Why can't all filmmakers be that way? (Now, I'll sit back and wait while some Talkbacker says "because Albert's not a filmmaker!")
-
and this looks pretty bad ass, too: a little over the top (in a good way), violent, not over budgeted, film noir with a little sci-fi thrown in...a good cocktail recipe if I've ever heard one. Can't help but wonder what's on the soundtrack. The stuff in the trailer didn't sound half bad.
-
...if you can't get behind Omega Doom (Rutger Hauer fighting robots), Knights (which is just an insane explosion in the genre kitchen), Cyborg, Nemesis, Mean Guns(Lambert and Ice-T), and Dollman... ...you just don't like low budget, exploitation films. And if you don't that's fine. But if you do, Albert Pyun is a name that should give you a host of great memories. Hell, you know if he didn't have anything on his resume but Adrenalin: Fear the Rush (which even in its long form is pretty incomprehensible gibberish) he'd deserve a spot in the exploitation hall of fame. Because Adrenalin may be incomprehensible gibberish, but it is incomprehensible gibberish with a viewpoint and style. And while I won't defend everything on his resume (no excuse for Brainsmasher: A Love Story) I know a guy who actually loves even Alien From LA. And it's not like he's lost it. A couple years back he put out a movie called Invasion that was actually sort of creepy. So although I can understand that he'd get the most love for Sword or Nemesis this guy's been in the trenches turning out product that hasn't been cookie cutter for something like thirty years. Hard to imagine someone who can't respect that being a movie lover.
-
I mean the movie could have some good ideas. But the horrible acting, cinematography, and production values are far too distracting to ever get into these films. And usually the bad trailers make the films look GOOD.
-
Can you share any anecdotes about working under the auspices of Akira Kurosawa?
-
guess it pays to read the whole article (you can avoid looking like a jackass later on) I like the sound, kind of UNKLE-ish.
And just for the record: low budget sci-fi stuff has always been undeservedly shat upon (and some of it not so undeservedly), but there are lot of damn fine movies out there don't have Micheal Bay or McG type money behind them, and are far better off for it. -
There are times when I can't excuse bad acting. While I'm watching a low budget science fiction film is not one of those times. Someone mentioned porn level acting...Well, yeah. I knew what I was getting into when I saw the box. I was pretty sure Daniel Day-Lewis wasn't going to show up when I saw the alien strangling the half naked chick on the cover. My point is that sometimes you need an escape from the parade of "Best Ofs" and when you take that break these are the films that you watch, the films that you sit around with your friends and drink and smoke and wind up enjoying ten times more than several Oscar winners combined, films that you remember more than who won Best Actor in 2010, because it means more to you. Okay, rant over, go about your business.
-
I thought I made that pretty clear in my earlier posts. The guy gets to do what we only dream about. I'd trade places with him in a second.Nemesis was fucking cool as shit. I've owned it in every available format and can't wait to get it on Blu-ray. I just cautioned him against putting the crappy CGI on display in this trailer over the top of it.Dollman was fun, but I think that was mostly due to Tim Tommerson. Tim, along with Jeffrey Combs and Stuart Gordon, was the best thing to ever happen to Full Moon Entertainment. I think we'd probably agree on that point.I do like trashy cinema from time to time. It's a great venue for themes and storylines majors and even mini-majors wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. It's also a great showcase for talent in special effects on a shoestring budget. Hell that's where Jim cameron got his start as well as many of the greats in horror as I'm sure you know.So yeah I'm giving Al shit. He's taking it like a champ and he gets my respect for that. But Bukkakeface still looks like shit and having a news page dedicated to it on AICN just makes AICN look bad. Hundreds of STV things like this hit the shelves every week. That's not cool news.Having said that, the fact that Al is having a dialogue with us IS cool. The fact that I get to tell him "Please don't fuck up Nemesis!" is a good thing. I have no problem with him doing whatever he wants with it, just don't pull a George Lucas and leave us holding the flaming bag of dogshit, give us the original version too. Just in case it's not as cool as he thinks it is.
-
WTF? why should we care about this guy?
-
...can't disagree with much of anything in that post. But you got to keep some love in your heart for the Pyuns and Coscarellis of the world. Because there is a difference between their work and the vast majority of the dtv stuff you see. And if you've really seen enough of it I don't think you'll be able to disagree. The vast majority of dtv stuff does nothing more than ape their big screen brethren. They ARE the action/horror/scifi movie you saw last week, with every beat and character, just terribly acted, with terrible production values, and no heart in evidence. When these guys (and there are a few of them) make a movie...yeah, it may be terribly acted, it may have terrible production values, but it's got heart to spare. And more than heart. It has a viewpoint. It fits in their oeuvre. It has a recognizable style. And it will likely surprise you a couple times, which, when you've seen as many movies as I have, you come to treasure more than just about anything. They don't (usually) make movies that are three acts and a cloud of dust. And yeah, that earns them some respect, not just for doing what they love, but for doing it with some degree of real passion. I'd rather see a movie by Albert Pyun where he had to scrape up Lambert and Henstridge and a warehouse than any big screen XeroX from Watersports Anderson or little Stevie Sommers (maybe excepting Deep Rising and Event Horizon). And as for the one thing in your post with which I disagree...this site has wasted legions of pages on things that made a lot less sense than offering a bargain on a new slice of Pyun.
-
Rabidfnark -- I'll see about posting a scene or two for your review and see if the performances are any better in context. If not, then we got some work to do.
Revenge of Fett -- I know you're right that Bulletface -- or whatever play anyone wants on the title -- probably doesn't deserve the web space but I hope it gets this break because I'm willing to be here to discuss the film and learn from the talkbackers in a serious way. Even the snarking can have its benefits.
As an example, a few months back AICN kindly posted a few clips from Tales of an Ancient Empire. Got a ton of comments and snarks that gave me some objective insight.
So we recut Tales and went out and re-shoot half the movie, added new cast and generally overhauled the entire movie on the basis on the Talkbackers comments. I hope to run the two versions side by side (pre and after talkback movie cuts) on the DVD.
for someone like me, the talkback is a valuable way to get creative input and I really do listen. And I think that's how it should be, especially when you're on the margins like I am. And believe me better talkbackers than studio execs and their exec assistants.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to be here and I hope my films going forward are better for it. Sorry to be taking up space for a more deserving film, but you gotta fight the fight for your movies or what's the point.

Paul visited my Mean Guns set back in 1996. I remeber seeing this tall kind watching as we were shooting in a prison in downtown LA. At lunch I was the last to leave the set and got in an elevator where the only other passenger was this kid. As we start going down he begins spouting lines from The Sword and the sorcerer and he tells me what an impact it made on him when he was a little kid. It was Paul Anderson. So maybe if you don't care for his films...you know who to blame!

You want in the fold? Then welcome. If you really want a professional critique then you can send me a disc. I thought this was just a PR stunt. ...nah, I'm not blaming you for Death Race. Because your version might have only featured impalas and el dorados, but there would have been blood on the sidewalks and that last game of chicken between Henrickson and Hauer would have put a smile on my face.
-
now I feel like an asshole, I apologize Albert
-
...throw Richard Lynch in there, too. Man, there would have been a glorious amount of scenery chewed in that movie.
-
no sweat and no apology necessary. this is what a talkback is all about.
-
Somehow, I'm not sure if mixing Kurosawa and Bulletface is apropriate. I'm gonna blog on my experiences in Japan in the early 70's as the Tales release gets closer because I incorporated some stylistic flourishes I loved in that era. So keep an eye out for that at www.albertpyunmovies.com. Might be some pics of that time where I look like the wide eyed kid I was. Deer in the headlights stuff.

Nemesis, Adrenalin & Mean Guns are some of my favorites (we used to suggest these at my NYC video store for people who were sick of the same old crap). I just ordered Bulletface and look forward to owning Nemesis on Blu Ray someday! You keep making movies and we'll keep watching because I'll watch 100 of your films over most of the garbage released by mainstream Hollywood any day!
-
I'll be looking forward to it. Bulletface looks like an excellent example of what an experienced filmmaker can accomplish on a limited budget. Best of luck with the release.

I'm not one to be overtly rude normally, but you hold a special place in my spleen for venting over that. How could you? And to get Pare involved to boot - unforgivable. You shat on a great film Albert. Shame on you.
-
Mr. Pyun, any idea we'll ever see dvds of Vicious Lips or Radioactive Dreams? Will that cg'd cut of Nemesis see dvd release?
If a copy of Bulletface is adrift and available: postmoderndevil@gmail.com -
...that you are in here talking with us. For some reason, my parents bought me a ticket to THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER at age 14 back in 1982, and my buddies and I had a great time. I even outbid dozens on ebay for a once-viewed VHS copy over 10 years ago and then bought the DVD! There are some creative aspects in that film that haven't been seen since. Great of you to step into the talkback and discuss things, MAJOR props for that and looking forward to TALES OF THE ANCIENT EMPIRE. My old buddies and I will go see it all these later after the first film, and I'm sure we'll have a good time again.
-
the honor of a black band around his talkback replies. The guy made The Sword and the Sorcerer and Radioactive Dreams, for Pete's sake!!! And Nemesis!! Does Harry even know that he's posting here?
-
one of my favorites - if we can't get blu, how about a nice widescreen DVD? you've got balls and class, sir; i'll be checking out your site
-
As a huge fan of Sword and Sorcerer and Nemesis, I would be honored to recieve one of these allegedly free copies of 'Bulletface'. You can contact me at jsixfingers@gmail.com.
Its inspiring to see you coming here to the boards and talking with all of us, especially being as there is so much criticism being tossed around. Way to take it in stride and with class Albert. Thanks. -
This talkback brings back fun memories! I have an uncle who used to live next to the guy who created the short-lived Horrorfan Magazine (which I enjoyed more than Fangoria!). I remember being at his apartment one night (I was 14 at the time), and my uncle had the guy over, and he found out I was a big horror junkie... so he goes back to his apartment and brings back a stack of Horrorfan mags. Awesome! I distinctly remember an article about Cyborg in one of them, and there was a mention of how it had something like 40 fight scenes! I dragged my Dad to see it in the theater. He loathed it, and I think the fact that he hated it made me enjoy it even more. Ha!
-
If you do release this, any chance you can include both the original and the "improved version" that you mentioned above? It would be great to have the original, warts and all.

Mr. Pyun: PLEASE push for SWORD AND SORCERER blu-ray!
by angry white baby
Okay, your movies are pretty hit and miss... but as others have stated, I think it is very cool indeed that you, like Sly Stallone, are posting here and communicating with the fans and non-fans alike. On that note, just a few suggestions:
(1) GHOST IN THE SHELL 2.0 was pretty disappointing that Manga did not release the original on a separate disc; the copy that's included looks like garbage. If there really are plans on a NEMESIS blu-ray, by all means PLEASE release both versions. Either seemless branch the different versions or have 2 discs (one for each movie). Trust me, the fans will pay the extra $5 to $10 for the extra disc with the original, unmolested movie.
(2) push Blue Underground to release SWORD AND SORCERER on blu; they definitely know how to release a movie.
(3) in regards to TALES OF THE ANCIENT EMPIRE, just keep in mind what made SWORD AND THE SORCERER so fantastic: natural boobs; Richard Lynch and Richard Moll; creative use of dry ice fog and lighting to hide low-budget sets; and very importantly, a great movie score. NO ROCK TRACKS! You get something like EXCALIBUR, the first CONAN or hell, like SWORD AND THE SORCERER and it should come out good. Regardless, keep up the questionable work and keep on posting! -
Butterface refers to a woman who is hot "but her face", hence "butterface". So maybe slightly change the title to something like BULLET HEAD (?).. maybe? Or BULLSEYE (being that the drug is called Red Eye)? I dunno.. any of you TBers have alternate title ideas?

in reference to Predator. it's quality that Mr Pyun took the time out to converse and is refreshingly self deprecating. He does owe us for Paul Wank Stain Anderson though.

Just looked up that Pyun did Mean Guns. I fucking love that movie. Will always love that movie. Guaranteed buy for me.

Hopefully you like the final version more. We had a lot of problems getting the green screen shots to work but I think we've solved the problem and we've done and are continuing to reshoot to refine the film. For the two years of revising and tweaking I'm hopeful the film comes together the way Michael and I imagined. Its a 100% different film now and I mean that literally. I know the bar is set pretty high but I believe we've turned the corner in getting it right.
Boy, I'd love to have blu-rays or at least good widescreen versions of the movies mentioned. I am working at getting all those titles re-released with my director's cut particularly Adrenalin: Fear the Rush which just got mangled with this whole boston reset. Man it can really be Hell making a movie.

hey Albert, you have to admit that Captain America movie...
by the_crimson_king
is awful, although the scene where the guy reaches to shake someone's hand and then whips out a gun and yells "HEIL HITLER" and shoots them is hilarious
-
Yeah, the version that's out is pretty crappy. It was a difficult shoot. Heck we flew an airline that had the propellor fall off the engine causing the entire cast and crew to sleep in an airport lobby in a then Yugo town called Split while they tried to find another plane to fly us. It was that kind of shoot.
But that's no excuse. I just got a bit overwhelmed by the lack of time and money. in hindsight, I should have planned for the funding not showing up instead stretching the little we had to delusionally try to make a comic book movie with scope. Futile, ill advised and I just plainly fucked it up.
sorry. Maybe when I get my cut uploaded as a free download, you'll soften the dislike...a tad. I think its much better and tells a better story.
Albert -
Believe it or not, Captain America was one of my favorite comics growing up. I had hoped to do an adaptation of "Sleepers Awake" story line which was my favorite but my marching orders were that approved script (which I liked a lot and just didn't do it justice) and the origin story. My intention when I first took it on was to just jump into Cap being discovered in the ice and just stay in the future but flashback to the 40's and having the Red Skull brought back at the sametime, and tying their re-emergence together . I always loved how Marvel dealt with him in the 60's.

lolol - It's perfectly spot on, Crimson King. Geez, you're never gonna let live it down. Damn, think about this -- you're sitting on a small insert stage and Matt Salinger walks out of the dressing room and for my first view of someone wearing the costume. I think I flinched at the sight of the red, white and blue uniform. Man, that was a scary moment. how do you make that look work. How do you make those wings work?
-
that's awesome and yeah I have no idea how one could make that costume work
-
Notice that two guys from Traffic are in this movie? Does this mean this is the vampire version? Albert Pyun is HILARIOUS!!!

Hi All,
Here's how I think this can work. I'll post a site address for people interested in the freebie to go. There you will see how to get the freebie. The mechanics of shipping, etc. I'll have this info by 4 PM PST on this talkback. Its a little unorthodox but I'm anxious to hear everyone's opinions and thoughts. It will certainly improve the next movies -- Tales, Road to Hell and H. P. Lovecraft's Cool Air. Because it comes with a revised version of Left for Dead: Inferno,i'm hoping its worth it to you to take the time to get the collection for free. Be interested in hearing thoughts on that LFD makeover. Or maybe its like a bad face lift.
In any case, the music CD's are great!
Check back at 4 PM PST.

"Pilling?" Really? WTF
-
If it wasn't the small budget, crappy costume and poorly casted ugly oldish guy: Matt Salinger the movie could have gone over much better...WTF were the plastic ears about? Anyhow there are some cool moments in CAP but the big casting and costume mistakes are hard to ignore. I admit I sometimes look at the instant Netflix movies for some of your newer stuff, but hardly any of it is available for download. I'd check it out. Anyway you just need better casting and better soundtracks... your editing and camera work is solid for what you do, but holding out for a good cast, and good sound goes a long way...cheesy music will ruin the tone every time, the less music the better.
-
It's nice to know that someone out there still knows and cares about making B Sci-fi/exploitation movies, and doing it well. I hope the day comes when these movies aren't viewed with a jaded eye. Good Luck in all you do, sir.
-
We're still putting the details in place but I believe it will be organized thru AICN proper. Details probably announced next week. Sorry for the delay, but it needs to be done right.
And rabidnark, Ebixby...thanks for the comments. If you check some of the older blogs on my site, it details what happened on CA. But I will endeavor to improve things going forward. If not, I know I'll getting ripped a new...courtesy of the TB.

Albert. Don't make out a re-release of SoF somehow mitigates....
by hint_of_smegma
....the awful disrespect you've shown a lot of fans of that cult movie. I know we all have our own visions of "what came after" for certain films and characters but you know what, they're best kept to ourselves because they're never, never going to appease the fans. Then there's going too far even beyond that, as you did Albert, and shitting completely on the premise of the original film and character you're cynically mistreating in the hope some extra viewing figures will come your way by association. You've got no excuse for doing it and no matter how you've re-cut it, you're not going to have suddenly turned the direction of that central character around from being a murderer to being a hero again. You haven't. You can't have. That's not the film you made and we both know it. You may have tweaked the film, accentuated or played down certain elements but the overall thrust of his character, and the story, will be the same. You took a genuinely beloved story and character, pulled a complete 180 on it for shock value and pinched off a cinematic log that even Uwe Boll would be ashamed of. Look, I may not like your work but I respect you for being out there and doing something most people on these talkbacks dream of - making movies. Seriously, good on you. But for fucks sake next time you get an urge to make an unofficial sequel to a beloved movie - cult or otherwise - engage your brain and nix the idea. Make something genuinely original that stands or falls on it's own, rather than pissing off people who would otherwise have a lot of respect for you. What you did was foul a lot of peoples good feelings for a great character and a great film. You know how films can affect people, how they can form part of the architecture of their lives at a certain time and place - you've just gotta remember to respect that a bit more and not shit on something simply because it's a "different take" on a character. Not all ideas are good ones.
-
Cap could have had potentual even for a B-grade flick, but when you cast fugly Matt as Steve Rogers, it's already a sign of bad things to come. Oh and not to mention The Red Skull being Italian. (Mama Mia!)I did however like the idea that his organization was responsible for the assassinations of MLK and both Kennedys. The Plastic ears was beyond attrocious and most of the budget should have been spent on a better costume as opossed to major actors' salaries. The scene in which cap first takes on red skull was ok but way too short and the rest of the movie just went downhill from there: no costume until the final act, bad music, bad editing and a corny enviormental speech.Sorry Al, but you had your chance and now blew it. Cap ranks among the worst marvel film with corman's fantastic four...well nothing is worse than 1994'S FF.Hopefully the upcoming Cap film will do the character (Final)Justice.
-
I get what you're saying. Really do. And I agree, I won't be doing another again. This experience was rough. But all I can say, I didn't do it for commercial reasons, I financed the whole thing so it was just something I wanted to try to do.
I'm sorry I offended you by doing so and all your points are well taken. I think in filmmaking there's something that makes a filmmaker sometimes see or read something and think of how interesting it would be if...
I'm sure many people read books or see movies and have the same feelings...if it was like this, or with that actor. It's part of the magic of films.
As someone who loved film going in the 60's and 70's, its hard to see some of those films remade. Especially the foreign ones I loved so much. But they do. And its obscene to me but every once in awhile I think someone does find a different voice and it works magically, just with a different voice.
Anyway, you're right and I can only apologize to you for having done it.
Best,
Albert
-
Yeah, you're right about missing the boat on Cap. Lost opportunity but we did the best we could with what we had. I know its down there with the tv Capt America and the tv Nick Fury. Its not really a feature. Hopefully my directors cut of it improves your experience but not likely. all the flaws are still there, but there's a bit more characrer and story. If you read some of my blogs you'll know we even had to shoot a half day with no film. We'd run out. But I didn't have the heart to tell the actors so we "shot" anyway. It was that type of show.
-
You didn't owe me an apology or anyone else, I understand why you did it in the first place. As I've said, my issues with the direction you took with it are what they are, as I'm sure you know they are for many other people who complained about it. I'm just a big fan of the original and the Tom Cody character who was disappointed with what you turned him into. Anyway, you didn't owe me an apology, who the fuck am I after all, but I appreciate you saying what you did nethertheless. And I do wish you all the success in the world - I just wish you'd taken a very different route with that one movie. All the best for the future and the new movie.
-
"I was a professional reviewer for years"
THE BEST JOKE EVER! -
and not telling the actors haha
-
I will really bear you comments in mind as finalize the cut in April. Will do everything possible to not offend the fans of SOF. I hope you'll be less offended if you see it. Just know that Michael, Deborah Van Valkenburgh (Reva in SOF) and the very kind Jim Steinman don't want to offend the memory either. Its one of my all time favorite films and I do revere it. I saw it in a screening at Universal before it was released and at least 10 times when it came out. I loved it that much.
To me, at that time, it was a real game changer. And id profoundly influence my films thereafter (even if its not apparent). I loved the courage Walter Hill, Larry Gordon and Joel Silver had in making it so original and groundbreaking.
Albert -
I used as a good rehearsal and those are the best scenes in the film, which sadly and badly are truncated in the released version.
-
I've been published in 3 newspapers, 2 of which I had columns in. I wrote dozens of paid reviews for an online site and I was quoted by Sony on their Superbit site. Misquoted actually. I was also a creative consultant for Area 51, the production house for Lionsgate.Look, I'm not saying I'm Roger Ebert or anything, just that I have a skosh of experience.
-
Since you've given me a chance to crit your work - your welcome to check out mine... One is a high school horror flick and one is akin to what's in Avatar with a twist of course...
-
Pyun has been on my side radar, but I don't know what the hell Smegma is talking about.
-
Walter Hill's 1984 classic "Streets of Fire" starring Michael Pare', Diane Lane, Willem Defoe, Amy Madigan, Rick Moranis and Deborah Van Valkenburgh. Hint of Smegma and I were discussing my film "Road to Hell" which is a take on where Pare' might be 25 years later.

NixEclips - strike yourself from the lists of true film fans.
by hint_of_smegma
If you don't know Streets of Fire, you've never lived. And while I disagree with Albert's take on where Pare's character would be 25 years later, he's certainly shown he loves the original film as much as I do and I have to say he's earned a lot of my respect in this talkback. I'm sorry I was rude at all. Not like me normally, just passionate about that film Albert. Glad you are too.
-
Never seen Streets, but reading the two synopsis of both films, I'm interested. Loved your earlier work, just got tired of getting burned on DTV crap. Unfortunately, your films fell into the "not wasting money on it" category. Sorry.
-
You have no fucking clue what kind of "film fan" I am. Shut your goddamn pie-hole and be pompous in silence.
-
Waiting to find out how to get a copy of Bulletface. I reviewed low budget flicks for a website, for a while. I was pretty mean. But I appreciated indie/low-budget flicks.
-
Take a deep breath. It was a humourous comment on my part so if you didn't get that, you know what to ask Santa for this christmas. And if you are indeed a film fan you owe it to yourself to look up Streets of Fire. It's a treat.
-
That's a movie I'd see!
-
I just like to curse, a fucking lot. So, suck that fucking shit-hole. Or, whatever. All is well.
-
to check it out. I don't know how I missed out. Making me depressed.
-
I think for a lot of people it's a love it or hate it film, doesn't seem to be much in the middle. Great music, great characters, the cheesiest dialogue you ever heard and you can't help but smile about it. Superb set design and a brilliant sweet/sour ending. Plus Diane Lane looking the best she ever did, and her concert sequences absolutely rock even if it wasn't her singing. Awesome, awesome movie, so much fun and absolutely beautiful to watch. Sends chills up my spine still after 26 years and about 150 viewings. If you've got a spare few bucks, order it mate. You won't regret it.
-
Love Hill and the cast sounds great. Will be checking it out. Thanks, Smeg and Mr. Pyun.
