Abrams Talks More About Directing (Or Not Directing) The Next STAR TREK Film!! And Confirms MICRONAUTS Movie Talk!!
Merrick here...
There have been some carefully worded, vague insinuations of late regarding whether J.J. Abrams would actually direct the forthcoming STAR TREK sequel movie. J.J. spoke to ComingSoon about what, exactly, that's all about. Sounds like he's "in" (which we all kinda figured), but is waiting for a script before a 100% commit.
The truth is, the idea of anyone else directing the next "Star Trek" film breaks my heart. I had the most fun ever with these people. But, it's impossible to know when the script is done. That's the time to look at it and ask, "is this the right thing for the movie? Is it the right thing for me? My family?" and all that stuff. It's so hard to know a year out with no script in existance if I should direct the movie. I look forward to making that decision when the time comes.
...says J.J. in THIS PIECE at Coming Soon.
In the same article, Abrams confirms that he is in talks about a potential MICRONAUTS movie (revealed HERE). He declines to say a single thing about the proposed project (discussions are stil underway), except that...
...there is a pretty cool idea for something
Maybe the Enterprise crew will take on Micronauts in the next film? [[crickets]]
I'm not being serious.
Abrams' TREK movie hits DVD & Blu-Ray today across the U.S. today. It's in stores, or can be found HERE

Is it in trade anywhere?

You can only get the single comics. Been checking the penny bins.
-
Countdown? That comic was pretty good.
-
always entertaining to read these particular talkbacks
-
Because the BO not as much as they hoped?
-
I recall him being wishy-washy about directing the first TREK movie for months, when it was fairly obvious that he NEEDED to direct this to solidify his burgeoning director career. At this point, Paramount should get another director to mix things up.
-
any word on that?? those are the Micronauts i am most familiar with..think one of the first issues the destroy a classroom or something if i remember right

Star appearing? Do movies still do that? Or is that SOOO 2008?

Man, I had so many of those when I was little.
Took me forever to try the comic book because in those days, comic-based-on-toys=movies-based-on-video-games today. But after a while I was bored and gave it a shot, and it wasn't bad. Didn't Pat Broderick draw a bunch of those? (ISTR Michael freaking Golden actually drew it originally...) -
Abrams' Trek was an awesome spectacle of visual spectacularity and phenominal character development. OK OK I ain't really that enthusiastic about it. But this talkback is young yet so I thought I'd prime the pump as it were. OK, all pomposity aside. I do think it was a good movie. I await the sequel with cautious anticipation. I would like it very much if they didn't address Kahn though. I think that would be better left untouched. Do something really big where you can throw in a bunch of aliens like the Gorn and Tholians. I could see the appeal of Crystal Spider dudes and Dinosaur dudes running around. Maybe a Klingon or two? I wouldn't mind the Harcourt Mudd character, but not as a prime focus of the movie. Either way, I think it'll be cool.
-
I'm fine with Adams directing. I think he's a solid director. He's no Ridley Scott (but then, evidently, neither is Ridley these days if he's serious about Monopoly), but he's no Uwe Boll, either.
The big thing is the script. The first one was lightweight, which was fine for the launch, but we need more depth this time, and I'm not certain the current writing team can deliver that. Time will tell.
And yeah...no Khan. No re-purposing old stories. Do something new. How about a Klingon war? -
And damn it, it's good. I would love another TREK film from him!
-
I understand you're saying there's an elephant in your pants, and maybe referencing Alien with the hold n the chest, but why the wheat?
-
You don't need to "prime" Abrams' "pump". The AICN staff is doing a super job of that already...
-
It was such an amazing film, the first one. The way you insulted the original series....but copied them. Classic. I loved how the crew were young, dumb, useless and annoying....TWO THUMBS UP!
I cannot wait for the next one! Please direct it! -
Series7,
Some, or all, of the first 12 issues of the Marvel Micronauts issues were collected in "Micronauts Special Edition" back in the 80's. There were 4 or 5 issues in each collection. These are listed at Amazon.com, and a couple of the collections are available there in used condition.
Alternately, you can buy the individual issues from mycomicshop.com for around 70 cents per issue. Search for the 1979 series. You'll want the first 12 issues. -
That would be better. You could be the....errr....errrr...the director who thinks he's the next Spielberg! Yeaaaah!!!
-
THEoverfiend, I hate on Jar Jar and friends as much as the next geek, but I can't help but get excited when I think about seeing my favorite childhood toys on the big screen. I doubt they'll be able to secure the rights to the best source material (the Marvel comic series), though, so I'm setting myself up for disappointment.
-
I don't know how you'd adapt the Micronauts into a film that could be consumed by the general public, but it would be interesting to see. I just hope they keep the missile firing horses.
-
Can you please explain why this movie is loved so much? Dont give me the piss-ass Box Office answer. Be men, and tell me the film reasons for why this is such a good movie. Of the little I saw (could not sit through the whole of it) it was childish, confusing, badly filmed crud. Were they made Spock wear pyjamas.
-
wasnt it supposed to be announced yesterday??
-
I’m sure the rights to “Big Trak” are available. I can see it now, Keanu Reeves dramatically saying, “I’ve got to make this thing go all the way down the hallway, and make a right turn….FORWARD, FORWARD, RIGHT, RIGHT, FIRE!”
-
Cool thanks man. Though it is fun actually going through the penny bins with a mission.
-
I'm not the biggest fan of the new movie, I liked it....but lets face facts here after District 9, nothing else fucking matters. But I think a reason it's so well liked is because its upbeat and positive. Everyone is working together as a team and having fun. Most summer movies have become these downer Superhero movies or end of the world event situations. Same reason people like Ironman, he's fucking pumped to be Ironman the crew is pumped to be the crew of Star Trek. Its fun and people vide off of the upbeatness.
-
he came close to directing a star wars (ROTJ ...then either Ep 2 or 3) plus he wanted to direct a bond film but never did (probably for the best as then no Indiana Jones)- - so dosnt appear to be adverse to directing in an established series (like the way Ridley Scott directed Hannibal..plus Cameron with Aliens) and ST is classic sci fi space opera like SW and SW is over in terms of any new movies for now....
he had input into the new Trek (liked the script had advised Abrmas to direct it and he visited the set). Maybe hes a big trek fan and has always wanted to do one (I think he was approached to direct TMP but was directing CE3K)..but the opportunity has never really arisen before as although there were the movies and there was some mainstream success with Treks I-IV it was still fairly cult based and became primarily a tv show again in the late 80s onward, but since the new film was such a big hit and trek is pretty much accepted by the mainstream star wars style now, perhaps it wont be so implausible for him to do one.
and Spielbergs never actually directed a space set SF movie has he - CE3K, ET, WOTW plus AI & Minority (& Indy 4) are all earth set sci fi -
Another day of sucking Abrams cock.
-
here it comes...but really why ask why? who cares why someone likes something you dont, you claim not to like it so let it go and move on?
-
Do you really want to know, or are you just looking for people to insult?
-
should get the fuck away from the sequel.you hear me?
-
If Spielberg was approached for TMP, it would have been 1941 he was attached to. Both movies came out a week apart in Dec. 79.

"... it was childish, confusing, badly filmed crud."
What, like the original series? ;)
Being a genre fan who's always been fairly ambivalent about Trek, I found the new flick to be fun, lightweight, well-acted, and well-directed. There were some goofy moments (big hands) and some ridiculous plot contrivances (Spock's cave), but since I had nothing really invested in the lore, this stuff didn't bother me. All I wanted was a fun couple of hours, and that's what Abrams delivered.
I think very few people have anything invested in Star Trek these days, and that's why the film was well-received. It's like the whole world went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
The next one, of course, now has something to live up to. We'll see how they pull it off. -
Because Marvel doesn't own the name "Micronauts". It's owned by Bandai, or whoever made the toys. They do own characters created specifically for the comic, like Bug (who are sometimes now referred to as "Microns"), but not characters that were previously toys, like Baron Karza.See also, Rom (Marvel can use their own Spaceknights, but not Rom).
-
Hasbro bought the rights to "The Micronauts".
-
My point still stands though.
-
Mantlo and Golden did a spectacular job giving life to these lil'fuckers that had no story concept or background save for Baron Karza is king of the acroyears or some shit.I rember when Image tried their hands on the 'nauts comic, but it paled to comparison when running up against marvel's.Should JJ/Hasbro do the film, it's gotta be based on marvel's comic or no sale.
-
If a licensing agreement can be reached to bring the Micronauts to the big screen, then another could be reached to use Marvel's stories as the foundation for the plot. It's doubtful that it'll happen, but anything is possible.
-
Get some guy who make it feel like an actual movie and leave these Whedon/Abrams types on the small screen where they belong.
-
JJ Abrams might....or might not....direct the next Star Trek movie? And he might.....or might not....direct a Micronauts movie? AICN scoops the industry again!
-
If you know, please don't tell me.
-
I was too old to care when the Transformers came out so as a result I never gave a shit about the films. But Micronauts on the other hand were AWESOME!!! I'll totally keep my eyes on this project.
-
I greatly enjoyed J.J.'s Trek because: The cast was great, the look was great, the performances were great, the pacing was great, the jokes were actually funny (unlike that raging piece of shit known as Star Trek 4), there was a sense of fun that embued the entire film with great energy, for the first time ever in a Trek anything the action sequences were actually Action Packed. Sure it wasn't very heady stuff, and I sicerely hope they wade into some deeper waters next time out, but as a story about a bunch of rookies being thrust into a dire situation and dealing with it the best they could, while becomming the iconic characters that we all know and love, it was damn fine.
-
More and more, these Abrams/STAR TREK stories look like bait for web hits (i.e. cue another AsimovLives flame war).Come on, AICN. Is there really nothing else of interest out there that you guys can dig up? Have you thought about adding more columns or maybe a Top 10-style list to generate some genuine discussion?!?!Who do I need to speak with in order to make this happen? Hello?
-
Is there even a question? Direct a huge franchise which at last point sounded like they were going to reboot Khan which would be awesome or direct some obscure toy franchise that few people remember. Uh...I think I'd go with trek. JJ, either way you're going to be away from your family and the only reason you shouldn't direct trek is if you were not asked back because of bad box office or whatever. However if the box office was that bad, why make another Trek film at all?
-
it was a fun movie. I got all of the nods to the original series and those were rather nice. The action was good and I thought filmed well. Of course the original series had more social commentary and high end science fiction themes, but again the movie was a nice change of pace. Besides, we all know the themes of Star Trek. There shouldn't be any rehashing of things we know about, but rather try new ideas with this franchise. One can like original Trek and the new version. Besides, the storyline of the new film makes it so that both happened anyway. On the uniform front, it was nice to see the old ones done in a more modern style. I personally hate all of the Next Generation uniforms. They were too rigid and militaristic. I loved the bridge of the Enterprise too. Trek films have great space battles, so I'm glad those were in the new movie. Did the new movie have problems? Yes, but as a whole I enjoyed it. Is Abrams a perfect director and does no wrong? No, but as for this film he did a good job in my opinion.
-
I hate it when someone as important as a director leaves. Even shit like Spider-Man needed Raimi all the way through.
Just fucking do it, Abrams. Your never picky about shit, and you always walk away from your best things. Star Trek or MI4. CHOOSE TREK FOR FUCK SAKE> -
Wasn't it nice to see Kirk getting into fights, womanizing, and thumbing his nose to authority in this new movie? I mean Kirk is the man after all.
-
Should Star Trek just be....fun? Should that be acceptable? Star Trek has always stood out for being more intelligent, commenting on humanity and society. Why should it go the mainstream...fun route????
Why the Abercrombie nd fitch route???? -
Great? They were great? I don't understand this. How were the performances from some youngsters great?????
-
Just because a work is "fun" doesn't make it socially irrelevant. The original Trek was really edgy and provacative, but at the end of the day it was fun and full of adventure. The way to make your point or thesis for a film or anything for that matter is to have it housed in something interesting and enjoyable for the audience. I will admit that the new Star Trek had more style than substance, but I liked it as a nice introduction to something new. I definitely want more Trek that is smart. However, space battles and fun make me happy. Give me the message in the nice packaging. Take the original Star Wars trilogy. It is full of mythology, study of the hero, and philosophical debate, but man do we love those space fights.
-
JJ's Trek was about reclaiming an audience for a franchise that, let's face, was completely and utterly bereft of life, fresh ideas, and dare I say it... fun. Pretty people are easy to look at. sorry. It's not like they simply cast people whose "pretty" outweighed the "talent". The entire cast absolutely NAILED their roles. Plus, The Shat, was a handsome dude back in the day (methinks that's how he was able to bag so many space babes). Also, let's not forget that TOS was FUN. Kirk vs Gorn was NOT heavy social commentary. Wrath of Kahn was NOT heavy social commentary.Give it another shot, and see what they do with a sequel. I'll bet you good money it gives you more to think about than the first one.
-
Wrath of Khan didn't have much social commentary, but I love it. The cast did get most of the roles right. I almost had a geekgasm when Bones said that space was full of darkness and disease hehe.
-
Those guys rock! It would be nice to review movies that way.
-
That's all i have to say. What have these guys done that has made you use a single brain cell?
-
Whatever happened to casting good actors? Are we not in the film business of talent. It's a damn spaceship, not an Abercrombie and Fitch store.
-
He should've been the director from the start.
-
In order to sell a movie, sometimes the look of an actor plays a key. It's not fair or a good practice, but it's the way the world works and always will. However, sometimes we can get an actor that is pleasing to the eye. For the most part, actors have looked pleasing to the audience.
-
Sometimes the actor is pleasing to the eye and can act.
-
Look out looks like AsimovLives is converting people now, havehope.
-
Yeah, ok, I'll grant you that Orci and Kurtzman don't exactly have a track record of thought provocation, but I stand by "Star Trek" as being a good movie, and a good franchise re-launch. As to the Abercrombie-ness of the cast: I'm not sure why it's an issue. If they couldn't act, I'd have a problem. But they CAN. They're all great in the film. If Chris Pine sucked as Kirk, I'd be the first one to stand up and say "find me the ugliest motherfucker you can find! Combine Bill Murray's pock marked skin, Danny Trejo's scowl, and Steve Buscemi's jacked up teeth in a bowl and let THAT play Kirk!" But the thing is: Pine's good. If the ladies fancy him, so be it...
-
SUPERMAN RETURNS shows he's an inefficient filmmaker. Singer needs to stick to character stuff- he should go back to doing thrillers.
-
and i dont understand how any card carrying geek could hate him. lets check a small part of his track record: gave us a great spy serial - aliasgave us one of the best TV series of all time - lostgave us an updated X-files - Fringe gave us a new giant monster movie - Cloverfield brought Star Trek back from the dead.now, you can spilt hairs over how star trek and cloverfield sucked or not (shit, JJ made it possible for me to get my girlfriend excited about a star trek movie.. thats amazing).. and how he starts TV shows and then leaves them in capable hands.. but the man is a geek god. I am the ANTI-Asimovlives (and i shouldnt even be giving him any more attention.)
-
man, this guy IS full of shit!
-
ETA summer 2012...thats make it a big no no for Trek 2 due the same summer
-
From my name you know I hate Whedon, but after that list from soup74 I like Abrams even more. Abrams seems to enjoy his projects more than Whedon. Whedon is too busy being witty.
-
People are easily led and brainwashed these days by the hype of hugely funded media ad campaigns, that should answer your question as to why some people claim to love this stuffed turkey of a movie. As for the new Star Trek film in total, the movie was nearly unwatchable at times, which was most of the time. It often looked like it had a TV movie budget...and was badly written from top to middle, and finally... bottom, including...very slow pacing at times. When you walked-out on the film, you didn't miss a thing--trust me, I wish I had walked-out on this turkey!!! Leonard Nimoy...always a fan favorite, was wasted in the film, and was made to look clumsy in appearance, and action, more than once. There were a number of unexplained a ridiculous coincidences on a Vulcan moon that older Spock and younger Kirk were both marooned on at separate times, by separate parties, including older Spock being on hand in a ice cave to save younger Kirk from a giant monster--when older Spock, perfectly aware of a star base on the moon, should have been on his way there to seek rescue for himself, and to alert star fleet and Vulcan about an impending attack--however, he did nothing, even though he was in a day's walking distance, until after younger Kirk arrived, unexpectantly--then, and only then, did he decide to trek across the moon with younger Kirk in-tow...to the star base? BTW, he did not know younger Kirk was coming ahead of time, older Spock just decided to hang-out on the moon, for no particular reason, and do nothing until Kirk showed-up, simply by coincidence...and happened to run into the right ice cave as the giant monster pursued him, upon which older Spock conveniently saved him? More ridiculousness took place...when the two men found Scotty running the star base--but the bad scripting doesn't end there--in the climax of the film, after Vulcan has been destroyed and Spock's mom killed...and of course, we witnessed Kirk's dad killed at the beginning of the film...we are treated to the knowledge that older Spock has accepted that Vulcan is gone and his mom is gone, and although the timeline has been altered by the Romulan villain, something worse than probably an infinite number of nuclear wars, he, older Spock...will simply help to relocate the surviving Vulcans to another planet? I ask you, where is the logic in that, when he could have simply gone back in time to just before Nero (the villain) entered the original timeline, waited for his ship to appear...and blown it up; timeline repaired, Vulcan saved, Spock's and Kirk's parents saved....and older Spock could have returned to the future just before Romulas was destroyed and affected his failed original mission, which was to save Romulas' sun--end of movie, and applause, right???!!! If that had, at least, been done, I would have said, disappointing TV looking movie, but they got the script done in a professional and seamless way, however, they spent millions on this movie, one that I suspect cost about one hundred million less than they claimed, by the look of it, but still, whatever the case, they spent large sums of money on this turkey, and forgot to fix the huge plot holes in the script? I think this was simply because JJ Abrams and his two writers really don't understand science fiction, nor do they understand the long fxed history of time-travel rules in the Star Trek Universe? As I said, you didn't miss anything by walking-out on this movie--as it is a lazy embarrassment. Shame on all involved...at the executive and production level!!!
-
...if he hadn't been forced away from X-men, he wouldn't have ended up with a property he had no business directing. Singer gets Trek. He's a fan. And Yack, Star Trek IS "character stuff". Or at least it should be. Not the crap the TNG and Abrams flicks turned the franchise into.
-
See, once again, he's forced into a competing franchise instead of the one he belongs at. Hopefully, if JJ leaves, Singer will ACTUALLY bolt this time.
-
oh yeah so it was... i guess CE3K made Paramount put him at the top of their list to direct The Motion Picture
bet he wished hed done Star Trek instead - thatd have been awesome...a late 1970s post Jaws,CE3K/pre Raiders Spielberg directing Star Trek - jeeze...
hopefully hed have brought some ideas to the script and rewritten stuff too -
Yes. Superman Returns sucked my left smelly and wrinkly nut. But, he is a good director...miles better than over-rated Abrams. Yes, he would do a MUCH better Trek film than Abrhamas J J.
Again, I repeat. SUPERMAN RETURNS SUCKED. But Singer still has a talented director. -
Shatner never got the gig cuz of his looks. His dynamic and ultra unique aura overwhelmed any other features he had. Nimoy was not exactly model-looking and neither was Bones.
GO FOR THE ACTOR, FIRST. YOU WILL GET THE BEST POSSIBLE MOVIE. Who is Chris Pine? Just who the hell is he? Get the guy from Heroes? Because he LOOKS like Spock? Fuck off. Come on, get actors first...forget about looks. Looks should never come into it. Patrick Stewart, not your man on the catwalk. But he is considered one of the best captains. Hmmm, I think it's because of his history on stage and his acting ability. -
in the tvguide magazine.exactly because of this reason: he had presence.

he has said that he is a big fan of Wrath, something that is also shown in the last scene of XMEN2.give the fucking sequel to him.

one day i was sitting in my house watching TV and getting high. (relates to the story because your mind starts to work differently when high) i was watching Dexter, a show i enjoy, when all of a sudden i just couldnt take it anymore.. how does miami have hundreds of murders? why dont the cops help each other instead of not believing each other's theories, or at least checking them out? NOBODY REALLY ACTS LIKE THIS! then a different show came on (i forget which), and it was the same thing.. it pretends to be based in the real world.. but NOBODY really acts like this!i realized if im going to continue enjoying mass- entertainment, im going to have to make some compromises. god bless you for being a geek (i mean that in a good way) that notices these plot holes immediately. I'm sure to you they seem so obvious that it pisses you off.. but the truth is, not everyone gets pissed off by them. believe it or not, even smart people who know better have learned to just accept plot holes like this and move along. then they judge a movie by their own level of enjoyment. i understand what you're saying, but every sci-fi film isnt going to be "Moon." even though star trek has geek cred, its also still a franchise, and a movie they pumped something like $150 million in. in the real world that kind of money get invested in mass entertainment before geek nitpickers. i found Star Trek entertaining despite its flaws. as a movie producer/studio you do a lot worse than giving JJ $150 million dollars and tell him to make a good Star Trek film. You could give bryan singer $250 million and tell him to make a superman movie.

Come Out To Plaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy! Just kidding, buddy. Keep it in your pants this time, for all our sakes.
-
The man admitted he is scared to adapt THE DARK TOWER. Are you shitting me? Micronauts instead?
Good Christ. -
In JJ Abrams?
-
Talk about a loaded question. I'm not going anywhere near that one.
-
...it just seems like they should have spent more time working on the script? Stargate: Continuum...a straight to DVD movie, with TV budget, handled virtually the same story with a brilliantly executed plot from start to finish, including showing the consequences of a damaged timeline, and a resolution to the story that was one hell of a good twist. How they got it right, and JJ Abrams and crew didn't, is really, really shocking? Thanks for posting! Your comments are very well thought-out and intellectual. Most posters on these Talkbacks result to childish name calling, and never have seemingly lucid views about posted subject matter--no, they just give us...rants filled with anger? I am glad that you have demonstrated how one can debate a viewpoint, and get one's points across in a meaningful and smart manner.
-
I want another one really bad, I have always been a Star Wars fan. But the new movie changed Star Trek for me. They made it funny, cool, and lots of action to keep me on the edge of my seat.
-
C'mon, man, if you think "look" doesn't play a part in casting, you're just being Naive. Sure Shatner was good in his role, but his looks helped. "GO FOR THE ACTOR, FIRST. YOU WILL GET THE BEST POSSIBLE MOVIE." you say, and I agree. As an actor who sure ain't ANYBODY' s "Man on the catwalk", I wish looks DIDN'T play a part in casting, but it does. Facts o' life, man. "Who is Chris Pine? Just who the hell is he? Get the guy from Heroes? Because he LOOKS like Spock?," you say. Um, who cares? First of all you're saying to go for the best actor for the part, and now you're implying that an actor MUST have a loaded resume, or a recognizeable face in order to be considered for a lead? Which is it? The fact is, Pine did a fantastic job. He's handsome. So sue him. Are you telling me you would rather have Philip Seymore Hoffman as Kirk, and Al Pacino as Bones? Not buying it... "Fuck off," you say. No, thanks very much. I thought we were having a rare "intelligent and friendly disagreement" here on AICN. But now you're mad. didn't mean to piss you off, guy. "Come on, get actors first" (They did. Everyone in the film is quite good. Except for Madea) "Patrick Stewart, not your man on the catwalk. But he is considered one of the best captains. Hmmm, I think it's because of his history on stage and his acting ability." AND also because Berman and Braga were conciously going for a more thoughtful, cerebral Captain. A less sexual, ladies man kind of Captain. "look" VERY MUCH played a part inthe casting of Picard. "look" plays a part in the casting of every character in every filmed, televised, staged entertainment. It's true.
-
The more I think about it, the more that's true. Both films are ridiculously overrated by one particular group whereas the rest of the film-going public just doesn't give a shit (check ST's foreign box office for proof). Both films are pretty bad movies - not "worst film ever" bad, just pretty bland and badly written. Both have developed a cult following for no rational reasons whatsoever.
Yep, Jar Jar Trek is to nerds and pseudo-hipsters what Twilight is to 12-year-old girls and homos. -
You say casting. Now, in which Bible or book does it say that the Star Trek characters MUST be easy on the eye for the general audience?
I am positive that there are better actors than Pine, that guy from Shaun of the Dead and the Heroes guys. I am sure. When you say casting, you simply must imply that the actors must be good at acting and look "good" as well. Of course looks are part of casting. I aint naive. But this is the question.
Is Star Trek Baywatch or Sunset Beach?
The answer lies within yourself.
HH -
came on late a week ago and i was too moved by it. Poor world sniff. I dont like the sad episodes like this, but it was very powerful.
-
Thank you wikipedia, and thanks for nothing TB'ers.
-
I believe it's in the book of Ruth. I could be wrong, though... Of course Trek isn't Baywatch, or Sunset Strip. Question for you, though: why does it bother you so much that the cast is attractive? Do you think they performed poorly? Anyway, Simon Pegg isn't exactly runway material...
Also, in one post you insinuated that JJ-Trek cast members were cast because they looked like Shatner (who won the part based on talent and not looks, according to you) and Nimoy (who wasn't handsome, according to you), and yet you're blasting Pine and Quinto becasue they're too handsome. That doesn't add up, to me. Also, certainly there are better actors than Pegg and Quinto (and Pine, Saldana, etc) just as there are DAMN sure MUCH better actors than Shatner, Nimoy, Kelly, et al. What's your point? The actors in the JJ-Trek did wonderful jobs. -
Pine ain't rubbish, but he ain't great either. From what I saw of Trek, he is the worst captain by far in all the movies and tv series. No presence, no character, no aura.
Quinto was an embarassment to the greatness of Nimoy. He was too flimsy and did not capture the objectivity of Nimoy's classic protrayal.
Go watch some of Shatner's scenes again and think...just think, how a casting director would ignore someone who puts THAT on the table. -
Never a good sign.
-
I thought the cast were the absolute best thing about the movie.
-
The cast? You serious? Compared to other crews?
HH -
Too much fun and not taking any of it seriously. Ever. True fratboy approach to filmmaking. It shows in the finished product. Next time, maybe you should have a little less fun, and do a little more work, hem? How about that, Jar Jar?Fuck it, do it like you did the first movie. I'll be disapoitned if the second STINO will be better then the first. Don't change gears, Jar Jar. You did "right" the first, time, look at how much people's ass your ass and the movie's ass. Don't change the winning formula, Jar Jar. Don't alienate your public. Keep it dumb. You are very good at it. You are EXCELENT at it.

If i was an executive, i would give 150 millions to Bryan Singer or Roland D. Moore to make a Star trek movie and would get out of the way and let the professionals do the job. Aberams is a Tv guy which should had never left the medium. and he's not even a particulary good TV guy. This guiy could neve,r in a million years, come up with such a good Tv stuff as Rome or Carnivale. He's low grade TV, for the masses who don't care to think while watching TV and digesting their TV meals. Abrams is the kind of director he wouldn't know what to do if he wa snot given a hundred million dollars + budget. He's like Michael Bay, a spoiled brat who started too big already, playing with the most expensive toys without ever having to grow up with the smaller stuff first. Abrams is the kind of director for whom money thrown at a problem solves it, who doesn't think things through beforehand and while he's shooting, and where all his mistakes made during filmming will be solved in post... at great expenses.Bryan Singer and Roland D. Moore for Star trek in a heart beat. Those are the guys that Paramount should had persued to make their new Star Trek movie, not this uninterested Jar Jar Abrams clown.

And did the new Star Trek really need to be a 150 millions masto
by asimovlives
If STINO is dumbed down because it's a 150 milion dollars movie, which means it needed to hit with the broadest audience possible, could it not be the case that the very problem with the movie was that they set out to make a movie that was TOO EXPENSIVE to begin with? I mean, only 150 million dollars movies are sucessful?? Nonsnese! why couldn't a new ST movie be 100 millions? Or 90 millions? Or 75 millions? Hollywood cannot deliver spectacle on those pricetags anymore? That's pathetic! That's a failure! This clowns who made STINO, they should took lessons from what Nicholas Meyer did with WRATH OF KHAN, and how he mannaged to get the most bang for his buck due to intelligent, carefully planed filmmaking, including scripting. Really, this over-expending on STINO is insane!

For the love of film, don't do it. -
I know this, because I completely don't understand the appeal of JJ's work. I thought the ad for the first episode of Lost was amazing. I missed it, caught a few episodes a few years later, and well it didn't grab me.. Cloverfield, watched it, wishes it was something else. I felt very disconnected to the victims and the opening was the most boring drawn out character introduction piece I've ever endured. I've been tired of early adult/teen flicks for ages now. I guess I should have known better. Star Trek- have not seen it, Very hard to re-imagine those new actors becoming those character. Like stranger replacing someone in your family. I don't know if that makes any sense. I'll watch it one day, but I doubt it will have the same effect on me that it did too many others. It's not about being true to the plot structures of the tv show or even the films for me that bother me so much. If he's kirk he better be willaim shatner. unless it's a much much younger kirk. I feel old, and I don't buy into that age is a mentality thing. I wouldn't go out an see paranormal activity because it's about two 20 somethings. I cant relate to that age anymore. I never thought I'd ever say this but i long for more middle 30 on up characters films.
-
but he looks like a teen know what youre saying judger.
-
you actually both make some pretty good points. i agree with you, MM (if you're spending that much money on a film, cant you toss a bit of that towards a better script.) and i do have to admit to asimov that JJ is a better TV director than film. (although i dont think he was just handed expensive budgets.. he had to earn his way with his TV shows) maybe im just making excuses because i enjoy Fringe and Lost so much. on a random star trek note.. i remember thinking 'first contact' was the best film, i rewatched it this summer (in anticipation for the new movie) ..wow.. its pretty bad isnt it? i guess not bad, but it really felt like a TV episode. i dont think it aged well. Khan, on the other hand, still felt like a major motion picture.
-
Just watched this on 52 inch Samsung LCD , 1080, all I can say is this - The three or four shitheads like asshole sucks and the other two idiots that try in vain to give this movie guff, can wrap their deflated scrotums around the deepest bowels of hell, this fucking movie OWNS you. Star Trek - best movie of 2009.
-
Boborci need to take ten years out, and come back to writing. At least ten years of long hard thought.

Kirk would be so fucked.

jj would call himself jar jar, its funner to say.

Abrams shit on the original series? I've heard people mention that the dialogue was cheesy, the effects sub par, the plot confusing...like the Trek of the 60's wasn't? Shatner=WORST FUCKING ACTOR EVER! there...i said it-bring on the death threats

Abrams needs to do a quick & dirty character drama action flick
by tall_boy66
Something inexpensive and violent and he can do really quickly, then go back to Trek. Like he said, "I've only made 2 movies and both were sequels to 60s TV series with Lenoard Nimoy." I'd like to see him helm Star Trek: Something Something, but he should go do something cheap and really different in between.
-
a huge abrams follower...I don't like lost, haven't seen much else, but i did enjoy trek...
-
...for its first few seasons...and I loved Mission Impossible 3...but Abrams understands science fiction films...almost as badly as Joss Whedon executed his understanding of the cloak and dagger genre in the form of Dollhouse? I think many of the wrong people are picked for projects based on just their past reputations alone; no one seems to stop at the executive level to take a look at the script before giving a green-light on a project...and say, "Is this worth me hiring you?"--"Looks like you got the concept!" or, "No you didn't get it at all!!! You've got talent, and I love your other work, but this project isn't the right fit for you, and you aren't the right fit for us"...well, save for when Joel Silver fired Whedon from Wonder Woman. Sometimes even a very talented person isn't always the best person for a certain project. Robert DeNiro wouldn't make an ideal Captain Kirk or Spock...and in the same way, not every director or writer...is meant for a film project. JJ Abrams was pedestrian as a director in regard to Trek, and the script that he approved wasn't even true to its own concept. Paramount and Abrams just wanted to say..."Hey, look, the guys who wrote the Transformers wrote this film--so you, the audience that saw that, should come and see this film!"--in other words, they hired these guys more for publicity purposes, rather than whether they were the right fit for this movie. It was stunt casting, metaphorically, in terms of hiring writers, no different than it would be in hiring DeNiro to act in a role that he doesn't belong in, and the same is true of Paramount hiring Abrams, they wanted to say to the public that..."This is from the guy who gave you Lost"...well, yeah, but he was asked to direct this film...and supervise it as the director, and if his first job within the production, that of over-seeing the script, was not what it should have been...Paramount should have shown him the door...as it suggests, only more of the same would follow in other areas of the production, via Abrams dropping the ball...as he eventually did. What happened to Quality Control...and that is my ultimate point???BTW...Soup74, thanks for being a wonderful poster. They are few, and far in-between...these days...on AICN. Luckily I met a few good people on this Talkback today, including yourself.
-
A sequel to a movie franchise based off a 60s TV series with Lenoard Nimoy.
-
Great blue ray buut the quality is no better than some of my older regular DVDs. And I've noticed some new release DVD's like transformers 2 have an unusual graininess to them. It seems that they are purposefully degrading the quality of DVD's to make blue ray look better to cut costs and sell more blue rays. Call me crazy it's just a theory.
-
They worked with Abrams on Alias and they wrote his previous directorial effort "Mission Impossible III". But, sure, go ahead and try to spin another theory full of half truths and wrong facts. It's fun to watch.
-
MI 3...didn't see it...metallica on the MI 2 soundtrack turned me off of the franchise altogether...that and Tom Cruise. There are only 3 cruise movies so far that I liked. Legend, Top Gun, and Dances with Samurai

Because Abrams had no clue who Orci/Kurztman were before Trek
by tall_boy66
"Hey! Who are these guys? They only wrote for my own show, wrote my movie, and then we created Fringe. But Paramount foisted them on me because Transformers made money! I'm a pawn, I tells ya!"
-
I agree with that especially the newer warner bros titles
-
Thankyou! yea like The Dark Knight, I found the decreased quality to be very noticeable. My old 1998 Mission Impossible DVD actually has sharper picture. Star Trek is the first blue ray I have ever purchased so I don't know how well it represents other recent blue ray titles.

Micronauts is a movie that has the rare opportunity to be excellent, and to make monet for all parties involved (the studio, Hasbro and--- hopefully--- Marvel). I like Abrams for this project, but would be big on it even if they went without him.
-
the movie he was eagerly awaiting wasn't titled..."The Men Who SHARE Goats."
-
Toy movies can go fucking burn. Keep Transformers. It has transforming robots, which is kinda cool. The rest can S my D.
-
Seriously, fuck off. The toys inspired a talented dude to get Marvel to pick up the license so that he could create a story about these cool toys that had no story. What he did was great, so again I digress, FUCK OFF.
-
Got yourself a good base now (for me a 7 out of 10 movie), look to where you can improve to make an 8/9. But don't lose sight of what you and Paramount want to do and make it a more inclusive Star Trek.
Was well received (by the majority, including critics - see rottentomatoes and metacritic) and its a Star Trek movie that my wife actually enjoyed (minor miracle).
Look to Nolan and Dark Knight and as a recent example of building a good foundation and then excelling. -
I personally think, give it another couple of years and go for the future option, i.e. 100+ years after Next Generation, Deep Space Nine.
Had seen some fanfic about an idea of having the Dominion come back taking over, the rise of a new Federation. I like the idea of a group of people trying to maintain/question utopian ideals/principals in a non- Utopian world. Which for me was part of the reason I really enjoyed the last couple of seasons of Deep Space nine. It is also always more interesting when the "good" guys are up against it, rather than being this huge powerful force.
You could also make an animated Star Trek Academy series for the kids and the kids with a few more years of experience. -

To put it politely. Gul Dukat who had been this great villain over the course of the series - see DUET - was reduced to a fucking cartoon character who wanted TO SEE THE UNIVERSE ON FIRE!! And Sisko feels great disturbance in the force. Lots of spiritual mumbo-jumbo and an unsatisfying ending. Ron Moore worked on that show. Didn't write that episode, but he did write another sci-fi show with a finale of spiritual mumbo jumbo and an unsatisfying ending. Ring any bells?
-
sorry for messing up your name btw, yeah video stuff kinda drives me up the wall sometimes.
-
Star Trek was the best Trek film since The Undiscovered Country. JJ should be proud of himself. Great cast, great sfx and an exciting, interesting story. Just saw it again on dvd. Probably even better the second time around. Can't wait for the next one!!
-
It will make your low opinion on the movie get even lower.
-
ButNolan made a good Batman movie as a foundation for saga. Jar Jar Abrams made a movie that aimed at the lowest possible, betraying the very spirit of the original show it's based upon, of adventures with brains. I'm sorr,y but you cannot use and compare Abrasm's shallow fiest with the work of Nolan for his Batman movies. What Nolan did right, Abrams did completly wrong. Listen to his audio comentary on the movie's DVD, and learn how even the movie filmamkers can't help but be suprised and amused by the plot holes of their own story.
-
So Abrams' STINO is a lower movie then any of the TOS movies made? And that's an apt thing you did. Becfause STINO should only be compared with the TOS movies, because it's a movie based on TOS and nothing else. When somebody finally made a new TNG movie (maybe Abrams again), then it will be Ok and just to compare it to the TNG movies made. THAT'S PLAYING FAIR AND SQUARE.
-
...the new Star Trek script outline, and or final shooting script, that this duo wrote, not just their past works, which...the latter, can sometimes set you up for a unexpected fall. Again, as I said in my prior post, which you somehow missed, is...you can't always say that a talented person fits all situations. Where they are good on one project, they might be horrible elsewhere, so you have to look at the new work that you assign them to do, and say..."Well, I like your script outline for this project", or..."It sucks"...and or..."Nice idea, but, it needs work." In this case, I am betting by looking at this sorrowful effort, that...that didn't happen here, reputation proceeded, effort, when effort, should always proceed reputation. Stop just hiring your pals, and hire who is truly best for the job!!!
-
nothing else matters
-
I was not talking about Abrams and Paramount introducing themselves to said writers, as they have already worked with them for years, I am talking about their decision being motivated more by marketing, targeted to appeal to meanstream audiences that went to see Transformers--the theme being..."Hey, if you liked that experience, you can expect that here with the new Trek!" It was part, "We're hiring are old pals", yes...but it was also about trying to appeal to a certain demo by... again, saying, "From the guys who brought you the Transformers". Studios think like that. If you don't believe me, those guys are talking about ways of luring people to the next Trek film...over at Sci-Fi Wire...the news wing of SyFy.com...the folks at SyFy Channel. Abrams and his writers are extensively quoted about the planned Trek sequel in a new article over there, and a lot of what they mention has to do with, again, how to lure audiences to see the next one. As I said, it is about marketing first, and often tmes, it is about marketing over story or filmmaking.
-
I hope the story saves it, but...as it is now, from the looks of the film, it is a major, major, disappointment. Looks like Avatar will only be fucking itself in December!!!

problem for them is--theres nothing that hasnt been done before
by dioxholsterreturns
ts all been done, you know all the TV shows and the movies, they basically touched on everything they could possible think off. what will they do now thats new? story will be influenced by their marketing potiential of course, the whole franchise became a nerd attraction, and not something for audiences to take seriously, sorry but its the truth. if you want real space adventure sci fi then watch SGU and Stargate movies, because its the only true space adventure left that hasnt been polluted by the masses
-
That's really saying something too, I am a massive Trek fan to the point that after my 21st I awoke with the Ent D tattooed on my arm, Its gone now but still.
-
The arm or the tatt? lol
-
Hard to take anybody seriously when they say that...it's akin to saying that ATTACK OF THE CLONES was the best STAR WARS...
-
They used the Marvel comics story line. The first 12 issues hold their own against Watchmen, Kimgdom Come and Days of Future Past. The toys were ok. They looked neat and had that interesting construction toy concept but they weren't that great. One exception: Baron Karza was an awesome action figure. However the Marvel comic series was epic.
-
"They looked neat and had that interesting construction toy concept but they weren't that great." they were better than great as you could spend endless hours creating new vehicles, weapons and robot designs thanks to their 5mm peg principle. I feel that the 'nauts was one of the best action figure/toylines since GI Joe and those ol skool Mego superheroes that my big brother once owned. However, I agree with mantlo/golden's 12 part saga is as good as the other epic series out there.Worth collecting and hopefully marvel will rerelease the special edition via paperback.
-
why on Earth would you own a movie you hate, and then listen to the commentary. That's fucking weird. I'll ask again, have you ever actually seen a naked woman?
-
Playing is redundant in that sentence. It's either "That's fair and square" or "That's playing fair" Anyoo, grammar fascism aside, you're absolutely wrong. Again. And you're a hypocrite cunt. Again. Tell me why it's justifiable to compare Star Trek to the Nolan Batman films, then?
-
Not only could you recombine the Micronauts with their 5mm hole technology, but you could also take the figures apart with a screw driver and combine them with others to make multi-colored figures.
And check this out this link. I wasn't aware, but Palisades released a Space Glider figure that was colored to match Commander Rann from the Marvel Micronauts series:
http://www.innerspaceonline.com/pal1_5glider.htm -
you made me spit my coffee all over my keyboard, thanks a lot
-
"Not only could you recombine the Micronauts with their 5mm hole technology, but you could also take the figures apart with a screw driver and combine them with others to make multi-colored figures."Your'e right E, I did it with a couple of Pharoids (Red/White & Blue/Black)and a few time travelers but I couldn't fuck with the die cast figures like Space glider. i was soo excited when palasades reissue the 'nauts and with trivia on the back of the cards too, I tried to get my hands on the arcturus rann figure but it was instanly sold out.it's unfortunate that the palasades toyline didn't catch on.I also switched alot of gi joe body parts and came up with figures more impressive than their original counterparts.

Magical multicultural Abercrombie & Fitch store is? Because every Abercrombie store I have ever been to, the employees look like either Ashton Kutcher, Chase Crawford or Blake Lively. In "Star Trek" the only Abercrombie looking person could probably be Pine. But everyone was older. And everyone represented different regions of the world. So find a new bullshit ass joke to run with. Trek 2009 wasn't some groundbreaking sci-fi movie, but the reason nerds despise it, is because JJ made it accessible to everyone. And with making something so closed off and nerdy and relegated to convention halls popular for everyone, hardcore fans cry and complain that their precious storylines (they followed religiously) have been thrown out. No one really gave a shit about Star Trek in the last 5 years. If that was the case the show wouldn't have been relegated to UPN.
-
Much more like a Benneton store back in the day.
-
Star Trek was a bad Robot production after regime change came to Paramount and Rick Berman got booted after his Star Trek: The Beginning project was passed on. They gave it to Abrams, who in turn, gave it to Orci /Kurztman. It was not spin or whatever fucking crazytown bullshit is rattling around your head. Get your facts straight, dipshit.
-
I'm a nerd andI enjoyed it. :)

Only franchise worth getting excited about these days. I grew up with Next Generation & the original crew motion pictures, then fell in love with DS9. Sure this is not Trek as we know it but its great entertainment and nothing wrong with that. Those that complain it's not as deep or as thoughtful as the series are correct, but neither is the highly regarded Wrath OF Kahn which is a straight forward tale of revenge. It is the best summer blockbuster in years (bar Dark Knight, on a par with Iron Man I would say) and I've watched it three times so far (once pirate, once cinema, once dvd). Between Trek, Moon, District 9, and the upcoming Avatar it seems that a new era of sci-fi has dawned (for better or worse). After Gladiator it was the rebirth of the Period Epic (many duds). After Potter it was the comeback of the fantasy genre, many unsucceessful attempts to launch the next big Potteresque franchise followed. Expect a bunch of crappy sci-fi movies along with a few groovy ones in the coming years. You think they would be talking Battlestar and Micronauts movies if it weren't for Trek's success? If Serenity were to have been released next year, no doubt it would have had a much bigger marketing campaign behind it. Pity.
-
Incorrect. The franchise worth a damn this days is NOLAN'S BATMAN franchise. Or are you going to try to convince us that Jar Jar Abrams's STINO movie is a far better movie then any of Nolan's Batman movies and that it heralds a much better cinmatic saga then the latest Batman saga? Is that what you are saying? Did i got you right? Or you just forgot about Nolan's Batman?
-
..I did say about "It is the best summer blockbuster in years (bar Dark Knight..)" And stop calling it Jar Jar Abrams' STINO, it's nt clever and it's not true, I hate those fucking movies. And relax, grow up man! Its just fucking movies we're talking here.
-
..you were a pretty clever guy with thoughtful opinions, now I see I was mistaken. You seem to be just attacking people just like any of the other jackasses on here. Let yourself down man.
-
.."Or are you going to try to convince us that Jar Jar Abrams's STINO movie is a far better movie then any of Nolan's Batman movies and that it heralds a much better cinmatic saga then the latest Batman saga?" I hate nothing more than people that try and shove words down your throat, don't you?
-
Jar Jar Abrams made a movie that aimed at the lowest possible, betraying the very spirit of the original show it's based upon, of adventures with brains. Star Trek The Motion Picture tried to be as cerebrial as the series and suffered for it, it just wasn't entertaining or cinematic. Wrath Of Kahn was a striped down revenge story and worked beautifully. Are you going to tell me you didn't like Wrath OF Kahn? Afterall, it was a complete depature from the spirit of the show. But it wasnt really a departure from the spirit of the show really was it? And neither was the new Star Trek. Why? Because they character centric, the characters were just as important to the series (if not more so) than any of the adventures they embarked upon. I see Kahn and J.J's great adventure story as beautiful companion pieces. In Kahn Kirk is mourning the loss of his youth and his space fareing adventures, in J'J's Trek his adventures are just begining. I am not the "lowest common denominator" as you most condecendingly label this filmms audience. I love movies that make you think and ponder and dwell upon and what not, but I also enjoy Indiana Jones and James Bond and Star Trek (old and new). So get over yourself and stop trying so hard not to enjoy yourself.
-
Let's hope, that he's directing the next "Star Trek".
For me(and millions of Trekkies), Abrams Star Trek was just awesome.
So PLEASE, Mr.Abrams, direct the Sequel, so that we Fans get something that we like
