Now That J.J. Has Successfully Relaunched Some Of Our Favorite Astronauts, Maybe He'll Do The Same For Some MICRONAUTS!!

Published at:  Nov 05, 2009 5:41:49 PM CST

Merrick here...

In an article evaluating all the toy/game-to-movie madness we've been experiencing lately, The Wall Street Journal says J.J. Abrams is "in talks" to lord over a movie based on MICRONAUTS toys. If J.J.'s there, can Bob & Alex be far behind?

J.J. Abrams, who created the TV show "Lost" and directed this summer's "Star Trek" film, is in discussions to produce a movie about Japanese toy line Micronauts, which Hasbro just acquired.

...says WSJ HERE, in an article which also includes the following TRANSFORMERS 3-related quote from Mr. Bay:

"I didn't want to do it," says Mr. Bay, "but Paramount, they begged me."

In case you missed the MICRONAUTS bandwagon, here are two vintage TV commercials hocking product:

Various MICRONAUTS merch, including toys and issues 1-59 of a Marvel comic adaptation, can be found HERE.

...and loved the Marvel comic book series. Both the story and art were awesome, and really added a lot of dimension to those bits of plastic and die cast metal. Bill Mantlo handled the writing chores, and he also did an amazing job with the toy tie-in "ROM: Spaceknight". The recent "Micronauts" series by some other comic company was garbage compared to the Marvel series.

The Marvel story is already structured as a "boy meets alien champions" story, so the guys behind "Transformers" may not screw it up too bad if they can use it as source material.

Didn't "Galactic Warrior" lose his ability to shoot off his weapon (no witty viagra comment needed) after a kid choked on the rocket? And then, if I recall properly, the original Boba Fett (available through the mail with 5 other Star Wars action figure proof-of-purchase tags, before Empire Strikes Back was even released) then had his firing backpack rocket glued down. I'm either a complete encyclopedia of 1970's toy trivia, or I have the worst memory, and just make shit up. I don't know which.

    MICRONAUTS!!!

    by cyberskunk

Oh, wow, I grew up through the Micronauts boom and bust and had some early issues of the Marvel Comics Micronaut comics. I wonder how all those characters will be represented in a movie? Now that I think of it... What could they do for micronauts have little metallic silvery heads? And the acroyears? Make the acroyear heads into helmets a la the comic books? Woo, I'm actually excited about this! And maybe my interest will crash and burn the closer the movie gets to release, but for now, I'm happy.

And I had a few of those evil aliens from the micronauts, too, like the creature with a glowing brain, and the pterodactyl humanoid.

    by nivekj

An episode of Glee is better than High School Musical. Any episode of Battlestar is better than the new Trek. Fuckin' Wolverine and the X-Men is better than X-Men Origins.
I was reading the back of a deluxe Bumblebee figure, and the box's description had more emotional resonance than Revenge of the Fallen. This is becoming aggravating. People shit on M. Night, but at least he has the stones to come up with something original and not... aw, dammit!
What the hell is happening to movies? It's like execs and writers have become afraid of doing anything remotely new. As an audience member, I'm more than responsible for this; I demanded it. Ever since I went nuts over "Masters of the Universe." But this has to stop, right now.
I save 12.75 every time I log onto Hulu. For every piece of shit movie that comes out, there's a genius piece of television I discover. The Office. Arrested Development. New Who. Fuck it, Old Who!
Fellow Talkbackers, do yourselves a favor. Rent a classic. Get the comic. Read the book. Shit, play with the toys. I've never even HAD Micronauts and I'm supposed to give a fuck? Fuck that!
Monopoly, Battleship, and Risk just sounded like jokes. Hell, even Clue the Movie knew what it had going against it, but managed to turn the concept around on its head with a good dose of madcap British humor. Where the fuck is that gonna fit into Candyland?
The only way this stops is if these movies fail. Fail fuckin' hard. Hurt Locker grosses $3 million dollars, and Car Car Binks walks with half a bil? Ice Age 3 gets three-quarters bil?? Wha??
I sure am gonna miss going to the cinema, but I sure am gonna love saving fifteen bucks each time out.

    Toy movies

    by lochkray

Okay, let's get it so everybody will understand:
Movie executives are not creative people. They're business people. So, unless a director can walk up to them with the words "built-in-audience" and "franchise" they won't green-light a big-buget project. They are idiots, yes. However, nothing has changed in that the most creative filmmakers will make the best movies. Good example; Pirates of the Carribean (first one, anyway). It was a theme park ride with no plot. Micronauts are toys with no plot. Risk is a game with no plot. Provided the filmmaker is talented, it is irrelevent what the title source is. All quality filmmakers have to do is learn to create within the stupidity bubble of studio executives (who hold the key to the money). Have a fantastic character based script regarding a taxi driver slowly going insane while engaging in a platonic relationship with a 13 year old street prostitute? Just call the lead character Toucan Sam, and change the title to Fruit Loops: the movie, and the executives will bite. Its not time to "fuck hollywood". It has always been time for talent to triumph over the adversity of studio stupidity.

Fucking weird toys - the only thing I remember about them was that the little speeder sled thing my brother had was also seen in Time Bandits. We spotted it in the theater and freaked out. He also had a really cool elephant tank and wasp/hornet ship, and some dudes with glow-in-the-dark brains. glow in the dark was badass. do they make glow in the dark toys anymore? I guess kids with night vision goggles and ps3s aren't impressed with that shit anymore, but for my generation that shit was high-tech

That is not necessarily true in the case of the Micronauts. Mantlo and Golden actually constructed a truly wonderful storyline and history and universe for the Micronauts. None of that existed before they got there hands on the property. It has a very rich history if they go from the comic book. Now, that may be the rub, who owns that storyline? The Toy company or Marvel?

    by thethedew

Like Bug, Marionette, Commander Rann...must be owned by Disney now. Infer from that what you will, but I would guess an adaption of the Marvel property would be unlikely, even if it were the most desired. BUT... if they really do get the licence of the toys, that'd be a real feat. The US license is held by one entity, but the Japanese version was actually an amalgamation of (at least) three different toy lines, each also requiring granting of a license.

    Problem with this is...

    by asimovdiedofaids

... a lot of the Micronauts characters were created specifically for the Marvel comic. I think Bug, Commander Rann, Marionette and even Baron Karza were among them. I liked the toys but the comic really blew my young mind. Sure it was derivative of Star Wars, sure it was, I mean c'mon, just a comic based on a toy line, but Bill Mantlo really went all out and made it something special, at least for the average 12 year old kid, anyway. Baron Karza was one of the most despicably evil villains in all of comicdom, even giving Thanos and Darkseid a run for their money. And let's not forget that Michael Golden got his first comics artist creds working on this book. But any movie adaptation is going to run into copyright problems right out of the gate, and any movie produced isn't going to feature a lot of our favorite characters.

... as a kid, I thought Karza was a BETTER villain than Thanos, Darkseid or even Darth Vader. After all, non of those mooks could turn into a biomechanical centaur version of themselves! Plus, Thanos was just in love with death, how dumb was that? Darkseid was obsessed by a fuckin' Equation. His grand plan for conquering the universe wasto figure out a math problem for crying out loud! But Karza? That fucker was HARDCORE, he just wanted to dissect everyone and store their various body parts in his Body Banks in order to have eternal life and create more Frankenstein-like stormtroopers to conquer and destroy the Microverse. To a kid, that was just too cool!

the thing about Micronauts and Erector sets is...

    by sir loin

...they encouraged us as kids to BUILD things and create entirely new toys. Same thing with Tinkertoys and Lincoln Logs. Are there any equivalents today besides LEGO? Seems like everything's geared toward a movie franchise, and not toward stimulating creative thinking in kids. That really sucks. The ad wizards should be publicly flogged.

    by down_in_front

The toys themselves were very high quality in comparison to equivalent scale Star Wars figures. The Marvel comic version was very good. Marvel did a fairly decent job with the tie-in because they pretty much had free rein on the "story" (such as it was). The same goes for the ROM Space Knight toy and comic book.

    by thusspakespymunk

Baron Karza was one of the scariest villains I ever saw. I remember my first MICRONAUTS comic featured this blonde dude who looked sort of fey and weak who was somehow Karza's polar opposite and Karza put him into some kind of universe-tear-up-inator and tore the very reality essence of the dude apart, describing it in my memory as basically a cutting of every cell with the full pain of the whole body for every cell or something. It was probably my kid interpretation of what he really said, but I remember Karza just standing there looking bad-ass while the blonde dude wailed in agony and got stretched into nothingness and then Karza was like "Whatevs."

    by orionsangels

When I was a little kid. I don't know how many of you remember the store Two Guys. I used to go to the one on Lincoln Boulevard in NJ. It closed down in 1981 I think. Anyway, my mom used to buy me Micronauts toys there. Often it was Time Traveler. He came in all different colors and was the cheapest Micronaut you could buy. My older brother had Baron Karza and I had Andromeda. We'd make them fight. I also had the Micronauts tube launcher race set. Which used Time Traveler. My brother also had Biotron. I'm probably dating myself here. Anyone else have this growing up?

There was a big hole in my attic though and for years I suspected they were in there. I tried crawling in a few times to see if they were there, but one day to scare me. My older brother told me that the hole led to the gateway to hell. That was the end of going in that hole. I was 5 or 6. I believed that shit! I was never into the toys as a kid, even though I thought they were cool, but the Micronauts just could not contend with the behemoth known as "Star Wars" back in the late 70's. However, I was WAY into the comics. The first 25 issues of "Micronauts" is pure Marvel genius (the death of Biotron still brings a tear to my eye) and retains the makings of a kick-ass movie, and I mean "Star Wars" level of kick-ass. I was actually quite pleased to hear that Hasbro got ahold of the rights. The toys will rock, of course, but the movie could be insanely cool with Abrams involved. As for the rights, Disney doesn't own anything. Marvel never "owned" the "Micronauts" - they merely had a "lease" on them. This is great news; I hope it works out.

As soon as Baron Karza appears in a movie George Lucas will sue for infringement of Darth Vader. I remember reading the comics for the first time and being totally thrown by the viciousness of Karza and all the angstyness of Space Glider (Arcturus Rann?). Lets see . . I had Biotron, Microtron, Baron Karza, Force Commander, a couple of time travelers, a galactic warrior (with working gun) an Acroyer, Giant Acroyer, a couple of Pharoids, Membros, Battle Cruiser, Photon Sled, Mobile Exploration Lab and Microrail City with the little gray snap hinge things . . . man my thumbs hurt putting those things together.

    by thx1968

Also noteworthy is the fact that the "Micronauts" toys were released at a time when George Lucas and Kenner were rewriting the rules of marketing. Not to take anything away from the excellent Marvel comic (which all comics lovers should seek out), but "Micronauts" didn't have a movie or cartoon to support the sales of the toys. If a "Micronauts" movie does go down, look for an all-out media blitz from Hasbro and Paramount the likes of which the world has never seen.

A number of the characters in the Marvel comicas ARE owned by Marvel. That's why they can continue to still use Bug in Guardians of the Galaxy. Unless the producers can reach a licensing deal with Disney, the hot princess and Bug and some of the others will not be part of the movie.

    *click!*

    by coolworlds

    Great news. But I'm wary.
To a comic book geek like me, "The Micronauts" were the R rated version of Star Wars and absolutely brilliant. The bloody usurping of Rann's royal folks by Karza, Rann going into exile and forming the micronauts, the ecape to the other side of the spacewall to earth and the pursuit by the acroyears loyal to the bloody Baron...
Ah the Baron. As villians go, one could not get any better than the Baron. A product of his own experiments, driven by a thirst for immortality and willing to eviscerate all around him to get it in a mad nazi scientist kinda way. Dressed in armor that could fuck anyone up. Remember the hands that could detatch themselves at the wrist and strangle some poor bastard. And that was only if the Baron decided to get personal and not to use his eyes beams, chest cannons, or wrist blasters. Then there was his minions, the Dog Soldiers. The surgically sterile evil of the Body Banks (come sell the parts you don't need, why don't ya) and all of the military hardware and shit the scope of which could or DOES rival Starwars (which was one reason why some artists supposedly hated to draw StarWars in the forst place--there was simply SO much technology to draw and demand to detail.) Marvel's tale of tyranny and innerspace good vs. evil was and IS something that would make an awesome transition to the big screen once the technology became availiable, Or, even better, as a limited HBO series.

As heroes go, who could look further than the tortured Arcturus Rann and Marionette. The arthurian Acroyear and the Gollum-esque Bug with his rocket lance. Biotron and Microtron.

I could start homage website just to talk shop about my favourite issues. I agree, the first twelve were the best. I still remember when Karza purred with insidious mirth when he discovered he could travel across the space wall himself by possessing the body of Dr. Prometheus of H.E.L.L--and the ensuing battle with Captain Universe. That was one fight that was up there on a scale of the T100 taking on the 800 series. Then there was at the battle for homeworld.
And it did not stop at that as there were some great tales up to issue 50--Psycho Man and his bio-hordes, the liberation of Bug's homeworld,Force Commander... how can JJ go wrong...?

He can. Big time. I'm feeling the same way now I felt when I first learned that Bethesda bought the rights to the Fallout Franchise (which turned out fine mostly cuz I think it was still gamers in control of it.) I can hope for the best. JJ hasn't proven to me he can do a respectable reboot. I liked his Star Trek--but nothing more. He didn't fuck it up and that's as much as I can say about his treatment of the material, but then I'm not a true trekkie. And there have been plenty of comic book heroes brought to the screen that begs me to ask "why?"

    The Micronauts is simply epic.

He could simply take the toys and do his own thing... which bring about the open mouth wide yarking dry heaves. Or he could be true to the comic and adapt it as much as possible, if he can get his hands on that material. If he CAN buy the copyrights and stories that Marvel's Bill Mantlo came up with...whatever magic that would take would be worth it. Remember the hoops Spiderman had to go through? Frankly, anything less and I would be dry heaving in much same way when I saw Conan with clean combed wavy hair in the Rated R-less Destoyer fuck up.

Mantlo's Micronauts is a story fucking destined for a big screen manifestation. In my opinion, the comic book made the toys and not vice versa. Anyone tackling this tale should sign a contract with the fans promising to offer up their balls if they don't adhere to the story and tone of the microverse. I hope he reads the comics is all I can say. Maybe he already has.

ROM Spaceknight on the big screen? Only a question of when.

They wouldn't be able to use any of the Marvel-specific creations under a licensing agreement with Hasbro. They'd have to deal with Marvel separately. That means no Bug, "Commander Rann", Marionette, Enigma Force, etc. They'd have to stick to the toy designs and go from there.

    by cornontheblob

They wouldn't. the concept is so generic and unoriginal even by 30 years ago standards, why would you bother collaborating/sharing the profits with Hasbro? They are space warriors with high tech weapons, that drive high tech vehicles, with names like Biotron, hyrdocopter, Galactic Warrior, Space Glider. A computer could randomly generate a toy line of characters just as easily. Just sit down and spend 30 minutes hashing out a cool, fun space adventure concept for kids, hand it off to some writers and then you wouldn't have to deal with these wannabe film producer, toy execs.

True, sir, true...although as an unabashed Lucas apologist (I prefer to refer to him as Uncle George, but I digress) it should be noted that Ralph McQaurrie designed both Vader and R2, and he can hardly be said to be unoriginal. I suspect the similarities are entirely coincidental. I should mention that as a wanna be concept artist (JJ..you reading this???) Movie should have kids moving the toys

    by animation

I would love to see a super awesome movie with serious voice actors, effects, and whatever. But I want all the sets and all the shots of the micronauts to look like the original toys, flaws and all. Even tho the plot would be serious, you'd have the snot-covered and mud-covered hands of kids moving the micronauts as if the whole thing were just an afternoon of kids playing. A dramatic moment where the main hero Mirconaut is injured could correspond to the kids' mom making him go take out the trash. The kid comes back just in time to (coincidentally) bring the hero back into the action as he gets repaired. That's be a cool weird little meta thing to have in the movie.

I loved how all the connection points were magnetic, so that you could make a man/horse hybrid, or put wheels instead of legs on the horse or man/horse hybrid. You could interchange parts on the men, put the rocket launcher in place of his hand, or even put the horse head in place of the human head on the baron karza dude. What an amazing toy, really.

    by deejay

I'm glad this is happening, as this is a movie I'd *really* look forward to seeing. The thing I wonder about is how Hasbro was able to purchase the Micronauts/Microman product seemingly without being noticed by the genre media. Between this and the Disney acquisition of Marvel, I'm now wondering if major media companies have developed a true strategy to lock-out Internet leaks. Whatever the case, I'm looking forward to this movie, and hope that Abrams and his crew use the Marvel stories as source material (e.g. give up some of their profits).

Just pulled these out of storage, sealed in plastic sleaves for around 25-30 years. They are still mint and some of the most visually stunning Marvel comics from that era or any other. I even found issues 13-17 and though good, they don't compare to Mantlo/Golden issues. They take on Man-Thing in issue #7 and Fantastic Four come on board for several issues around #14. Micronauts and Marvel were a phenomenal mating that should be explored cinematically if nobody sues. Karza vs. Force Commander would be awesome. Marionette was smoldering and Bug rocks.

I read an article a few years ago that Mantlo was rollerblading and got hit by a car in the early 90s I believe, sustaining brain damage. I think he's still alive today, though he's a mental vegetable. He was in the process of getting a law degree if I remember, very sad. You can google it and find more details.

This is true. I had the Shogun Warrior named Raydeen, right... and my fucking history teacher's name was Ray Dean. You don't understand how funny that was to me but no one would have gotten it. Also, Mazinga was bad ass and yes, deadly bitchin'.

    by stalkeye

Yeah, I heard the same thing as well and from what i have known of him from a former friend, was that he was a nice guy but very critical when it came to judging one's art. He pissed off pat broderick to a point in which he left and swore never to work for marvel again.deez, iv'e ran into my share of comic artists but always wanted to meet Golden as he was (still is) my favorite comic artist aside from Kirby. You lucky dawg. :P

    Baron Karza's body banks.

    by keith maniac

I think the Marvel comic would be a good base for the movie. As somebody already said though, Marvel own the rights to some of the characters, as they are not part of the original toy line. I seem to remember, by some contrivance, Baron Karza being human sized when he came into our world and had a battle with all these soldiers outside some labs or something. They've got to have the Hornetroid in it, that toy was the definition of awesome.

... I think Wizard magazine did a story on Mantlo sometime in the last couple of years, as well. If your local library keeps those issues, that might be a good source to check out, as well. Hopefully, the producers of Micronauts would invest the capital necessary to allow the Marvel stories to be used as source material. I'm indifferent on whether Bug, Marionette or Captain Universe would be used on film, but would like to see concepts such as the Microverse, Body Banks (and maybe the Enigma Force) come into play. This project has an incredible amount of potential, whether or not Abrams sticks with it.

Does no one know the difference between hocking and hawking? Does no one know that hocking means pawning? I searched the talkback expecting someone in this huge response would have noticed and mentioned the error, but no. Oh well, the word you meant was hawking, Merrick.

Did you ever get your hands on Michael Golden's great Star Wars issue for Marvel? It was issue #38. The story was called "Riders in The Void." As far as I'm concerned, it was the best comic book Star Wars art ever printed. The great thing about Golden is that everything he draws looks like it can be built in the real world. Great spaceship designs in that book. His love of detail is also there, with 1970s-style rocker switches on the spaceship consoles and Luke wearing a military canvas web belt. If you've not seen the book, I highly recommend it.As far as the Micronaughts go, I also hope they draw from the great Bill Mantlo/Michael Golden issues. When I was a kid, the story really moved me. Karza was one bad motherfucker. I remember a couple of my fellow geeks and I hated one teacher named Mr. Garza so we called him Baron Garza. (yeah, we were pathetic.) :)

Apparently, those are somewhat valuable as they were not available beyond the U.S. market or something like that. I didn't even know it existed until seeing the Shogun site. I've got a lot of random Marvel comics stored too, many are SW, Raiders/IJ, and I've got the illustrated comic tie-ins of Alien, Blade Runner and even one for Godzilla vs. Megalon that was handed out at a U.S. screening in the late '70's. I've got a bunch of Marvel's Godzilla series and the early ones aren't bad. I even have the Marvel Buckaroo Banzai adaptation and The Dark Crystal. Those guys did everything!

Illustrated story for Alien, not Marvel now that I've looked at it again. That one is really well done. I found an old Heavy Metal magazine with some BTS rotoscoping process stills of the actress who stood in for the blonde warrior princess in the HM animated movie. That was a huge deal when I was a kid and I vividly remember seeing it in the theater. That really blew my mind. That and Michelle Johnson in Blame It On Rio. Good Lordy! Those were the days...

and Micronauts and Godzilla all hit during that era. That stuff just owned in the late 70's. I seem to remember another line of larger action figures that all glowed. I think they all needed a battery. One guy you could see through and he lit up. What the hell were those? They were like the size of a Batman and Robin figure from back then, but not as big as a G.I. Joe.

    by flexfill

I still have that thing stashed somewhere. I was searching 70's action figure guides trying to track down those glowing guys. I think they were specific to Fedco or Zody's back in the day. They were sort of like Mego sized, but they all needed a battery to illuminate in the dark. Very obscure, but not those Micronaut brain glow dudes. I'll have to keep researching that one. They were cool.
