Who Would Win In A Battle Between BLACK SWAN And ROBOCOP?? The SWAN!?!?

Published at:  Jul 15, 2009 11:42:39 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Seems machinations are afoot that may slow the progress of Darren Aronofsky's ROBOCOP remake.

Aronofsky's been trying to get a Natalie Portman project called BLACK SWAN off the ground for a while now; seems pieces of that puzzle are now falling into place. This may necessitate a start date that would either delay Darren's still-in-development ROBOCOP resurrection, or compel MGM to find another director for the project.

BLACK SWAN is...

...about a woman in the New York City ballet who may or may not be imagining things about an apparent rival.
[EDIT]
...insiders in the rep community say the studio has also quietly put out feelers for other directors who could come on to “Robocop” in case the timing doesn't work out.

MGM declined comment on the story.

...says THIS ASSESSMENT at THR's Risky Business Blog.

I've never been one to support the notion of a ROBOCOP remake in any way, shape, or form. This said, knowing the project was under Aronofsky's lead afforded a small measure of comfort. He was the lesser of many evil possibilities...possibilities which look like they may now be reopened for consideration (CLICK HERE for an earlier article detailing discussions about ROBOCOP directors before Darren came on board).

Again, it's possible schedules may be worked out so Aronofsky can wrangle both projects...so don't take this article as an absolute indicator of his departure.

If Darren can't do it, fuck it; leave it alone. I personally wasn't too hip on the idea in the first place but I agree that Aronofsky may have put something new into it that had the promise of being interesting. Without him, it's just another fucking remake.

    by hint_of_smegma

If this isn't the sound of his little feet running for the hills away from the Robocop remake, it's certainly a good impression of it. And with him goes all hope for a decent remake of Robocop. Hey ho, Murphy, we'll always have 1987.

    RE: Robocop

    by captain happy

With his announcement as Robocop's director, Aronofsky is primed to butcher Verhoeven's aesthetic in what was definitely an auteur film. As for a reimagining, what's the point? If it's a humorless retread of the source material it will share so much with so much pointless straight to DVD sci-fi fodder. The key to the original was its humor, satire & unpredictable plotting. Three things that Aronofsky has not shown himself to be a master of. Guillermo del Toro would be better. Even Quentin Tarantino. People who understand the pop-zeitgeist & have good storytelling chops.

Yes, that's right, just forget about the actual Robocop 2 and that shitty 3rd movie, TV series, whatever. Just get Verhoeven back to make a true sequel to the original, get Peter Weller, $200 million budget, NC-17 rating. Set it 20 years later. Plenty of guns, gore, tits, black comedy, biting satire. If only things were that simple, eh? Then get him to make a true sequel to Starship Troopers as well (ignoring those crappy direct-to-dvd entries).

that Verhoven touch is what makes it such a classic action sci-fi..

My only concern is Aranofsky trying to turn it into something else. It sounds like another 're-imagining' that should grow its own balls and be titled something else rather than soiling the original pointlessly and drawing comparisons.

    by v'shael

you did for today's sensibilities what the original Robocop did for 80's corporate malfeasance, incompetence and environmental fuck-uppery. (Thanks Reagan.)

Doing that would make it a very different movie. One that the studio wouldn't like very much, since they never did understand the cleverness of Verhoeven's version.

I fear though that this will be an excuse for the usual American blockbuster formula movie, namely "Big man blows shit up".

I heard long time ago that Portman was in talk to play the lead role in a remake of Suspiria (also set in a ballet school...), but Dario Argento always tried hard to stop this heresy. So, could Black Swan be a "remake in disguise" or something? I wonder.
