Who Would Win In A Battle Between BLACK SWAN And ROBOCOP?? The SWAN!?!?
Merrick here...
Seems machinations are afoot that may slow the progress of Darren Aronofsky's ROBOCOP remake.
Aronofsky's been trying to get a Natalie Portman project called BLACK SWAN off the ground for a while now; seems pieces of that puzzle are now falling into place. This may necessitate a start date that would either delay Darren's still-in-development ROBOCOP resurrection, or compel MGM to find another director for the project.
BLACK SWAN is...
...about a woman in the New York City ballet who may or may not be imagining things about an apparent rival.
[EDIT]
...insiders in the rep community say the studio has also quietly put out feelers for other directors who could come on to “Robocop” in case the timing doesn't work out.
MGM declined comment on the story.
...says THIS ASSESSMENT at THR's Risky Business Blog.
I've never been one to support the notion of a ROBOCOP remake in any way, shape, or form. This said, knowing the project was under Aronofsky's lead afforded a small measure of comfort. He was the lesser of many evil possibilities...possibilities which look like they may now be reopened for consideration (CLICK HERE for an earlier article detailing discussions about ROBOCOP directors before Darren came on board).
Again, it's possible schedules may be worked out so Aronofsky can wrangle both projects...so don't take this article as an absolute indicator of his departure.

Hmmmm Ive seen better.
-
If Darren can't do it, fuck it; leave it alone. I personally wasn't too hip on the idea in the first place but I agree that Aronofsky may have put something new into it that had the promise of being interesting. Without him, it's just another fucking remake.
-
can't they wait for Arnofsky to finish Black Swann.
-
He's such a sick director, that would have been an insane robocop, an actual re-imagining, not just the same movie with new effects and no plot.
-
No way! I'm totally surprised!
-
I've read this script and it is unintentionally hilarious. It wants to be REPULSION and ends up turning into a goofily absurd horror piece.
-
If this isn't the sound of his little feet running for the hills away from the Robocop remake, it's certainly a good impression of it. And with him goes all hope for a decent remake of Robocop. Hey ho, Murphy, we'll always have 1987.
-
Wasn't Robocop going to be a sequel? That would be epic. Wouldn't mind seeing him take on a proper horror film, though. Black Swan sounds like perfect material for Aronofsky.
-
With his announcement as Robocop's director, Aronofsky is primed to butcher Verhoeven's aesthetic in what was definitely an auteur film. As for a reimagining, what's the point? If it's a humorless retread of the source material it will share so much with so much pointless straight to DVD sci-fi fodder. The key to the original was its humor, satire & unpredictable plotting. Three things that Aronofsky has not shown himself to be a master of. Guillermo del Toro would be better. Even Quentin Tarantino. People who understand the pop-zeitgeist & have good storytelling chops.
-
That is all.
-
I hope he doesn't bail on it. His take on a movie like this would have been really intersting. It would have been cool to see if he could do for Robocop what Nolan did for Batman.
-
So why not give him a fucking budget and let him make robocop 4. Not a remake, nor a reimagining, nor a fucking prequel, just a normal, honest to god, balls to the wall robocop sequel. With fucking money on the screen. Verhoeven would fuck your eyeballs.
-
...in the last line "MGM declined comment on the story," MGM looked scarily like McG for a split second. I almost crapped myself - twice.
-
Its fucking perfect. Update fucking Highlander god damnit.
-
Am I the only one who read the description of Black Swan and thought, that sounds exactly like Perfect Blue summed up?
-
Update it. Any word on his fucking Thomas Crown 2: Die Harder movie?
-
But AHH AHHH! Is Peter Weller still alive?
-
Yes, that would do too.
-
Yes, that's right, just forget about the actual Robocop 2 and that shitty 3rd movie, TV series, whatever. Just get Verhoeven back to make a true sequel to the original, get Peter Weller, $200 million budget, NC-17 rating. Set it 20 years later. Plenty of guns, gore, tits, black comedy, biting satire. If only things were that simple, eh? Then get him to make a true sequel to Starship Troopers as well (ignoring those crappy direct-to-dvd entries).
-
someone call Rodrigez!
-
... seriously, if they drop Aranofsky, get Verhoeven. They should have hired him in the first place anyway!
-
I thought so too and it's pretty interesting considering Aronofsky was at one point, years ago, attached to direct a remake of Toshiki Sato's live-action Perfect Blue movie!
-
Fuck you haters, Robocop 1-3 is better then alot of shit.
-
THE Swan one seems right up his alley.I LIKE aronfonsky-he shouldn't sully his decent resume with ROBOCOP.Althouhg, oddly-Id LOVE to see a good(with perhaps a suprising re-design?)ROBOCOP remake. But you need a director who can film violence.Sadly,I can only recommend the ORIGNAL director. DO IT VERHOVEN!
-
make it so hollywood
-
he's going to do a BO flop with Natalie Portman about a jilted lesbian and her murderous tendencies? That sounds spectacular. Great idea...
-
half vagrant, all cop!
-
What about Quentin Tarantino? Seriously...
-
Robocop needs a good sequel
-
An original pic is always to be preferred. I also would like to beat Portman haters to the punch: if you don't like her, that's ok. But it does mean you're probably gay, which is also ok.
-
ROBO-SWAN?
One man is nearly killed after a group of vigalante dancers corners him in a warehouse and decide to blow of several of his limbs, and leave him for dead. Now, thanks to advances in science, he is rebuilt as the ULTIMATE DANCER.As he is reborn, we see whether he is still man ,dancer or robot. He is ROBO-SWAN!
"DROP IT BARISHNAKOFF!" -
Yep, on the same page there. He's obviously a fan of that film as he's bought the rights and borrowed shots from it in the past(underwater scream for Requiem). I'm down for both remakes though!
-
The original still defies all logic of goodness. My out of print Criterion is worth some bucks now.
-
Perfect Blue...yup medianerd...thats what i thought...
-
then I say it's got to be a-okay.
-
Seems to me I just read about MGM being roughly 3.5 billion in debt, due in 2012 or it's Chapter 11 time. In fact, they're borrowing a few hundred mil just to keep movies in production. Soooooooo ... yeah. ROBOCOP remake. Rotsa ruck.
-
Fuck yeah. Never really cared about Robocop so it would be fun to watch the Talkbacks explode :)
-
... a RatNER, that is. Oh man, this thing is gonna blow...
-
Is getting a little long in the tooth. Dude looks like an aging history professor now. What am I saying? Dude IS an aging history professor now!
-
I watched it again recently and it was painful. You do realize the film hasn't aged well, right? It is far from this untouchable gem.
-
like passing over a corvette for a chevette - and ROBOCOP 3 SUCKED! you hear me, SUCKED!
-
for its purpose.
-
You are the greatest of ALL reatards.
-
one of the great lines of the 80's? I lean towards yes.
-
that Verhoven touch is what makes it such a classic action sci-fi..
My only concern is Aranofsky trying to turn it into something else. It sounds like another 're-imagining' that should grow its own balls and be titled something else rather than soiling the original pointlessly and drawing comparisons.
-
This lousy pile of cinematic ape dung? With flying RoboCop? Fighting against a RoboNinja? Rip Torn as the CEO? A fucking annoying CCH Pounder? The movie that was PG-13?
-
you did for today's sensibilities what the original Robocop did for 80's corporate malfeasance, incompetence and environmental fuck-uppery. (Thanks Reagan.)
Doing that would make it a very different movie. One that the studio wouldn't like very much, since they never did understand the cleverness of Verhoeven's version.
I fear though that this will be an excuse for the usual American blockbuster formula movie, namely "Big man blows shit up". -
FUCKING. MULTIPLE. HELLS. How cretinously stupid do you need to be to not see this coming? Let's all do this together, kids!
The Fountain: FLOP.
Aronofsky desperate for another project. Chooses the Robocop remake.
The Wrestler is showered with awards!
And what, the guy is STILL going to do the hack work with the Robocop remake after that? Oh, absolutely!
Just leave Robocop alone. It's a masterpiece already. -
That is all. I don't feel Robocop to be that dated. It came pretty close to what our world looks like today.
-
I heard long time ago that Portman was in talk to play the lead role in a remake of Suspiria (also set in a ballet school...), but Dario Argento always tried hard to stop this heresy. So, could Black Swan be a "remake in disguise" or something? I wonder.
-
...McG!!! Yay! All hail the Big Mac!
-
so I don't know all the scheduling difficulties for her either but who knows how all three of these movies are going to work out. I like that Aranofsky was going to do Robocop but otherwise I wouldn't have cared, just another remake reimagining thing that could go horribly wrong without him. The Black Swan idea sounds worse.
-
Too damn bad the opportunity for me to actually quote it has never presented itself, all the bitches I know wouldn't get the reference and would take it the wrong damn way. Sucks.
-
Not a REALLY terrible movie but c'mon, we can do better (aside from when the guy jumps out the window that was hilarious, the way he falls down into the next frame's bkgrnd hahaha)
-
"C'mon, Sal, the tigers are playin'! Tonight!...never miss a game."
-
I feel you on that one, bra.
-
...then I wouldn't buy it for a dollar.
-
I was so looking forward to Robocop floating thru space in a bubble eating tree bark...damn!
-
Verhoeven's subversive critique on modern law enforcement was pure genius.Black humour throughout and violence that only Verhoeven could do so cinematically. IN the Director's cut the ED 209 malfunction is simply hilarious in a sick kind of way. The yuppie just gets blown away to shit and then some. A warning about allowing computers to be allowed responsibility. Early Judgement day propoganda anybody?
