AICN Exclusive!! You Know That New STAR TREK Trailer?? We Have An Even Cooler Version (In Glorious QuickTime)...

Merrick here...
A week or two ago, we got our first look at the trailer for J.J. Abrams' new STAR TREK movie (HERE). As big, splashy, and flashy as it was...there was something missing from that trailer - an element of the film many of us already knew about & wanted to see. Through the generosity of J.J. & Company, and various Powers That Be at Paramount (THANK ALL OF YOU...very much...for making this possible), we thought we'd kick off your Thanksgiving/Christmas/Holiday season by dropping that little something extra into the trailer. This is pretty much the same material you saw before...but with one little tweak (which is also a rather big tweak). See what I mean in...

    by JohnNadaUK

That thinks this is a terrible trailer? And who wants to punch that kid at the beginning? In fact who wants to punch the older Kirk? Guy's got a face like a slapped ass. Nice to see Nimoy but this movie looks garbage.

    I ain't cranky about this...

    by crankyoldguy

Now it really is looking like Trek. Spock with Amanda? Sulu swordfighting and more...Were those in there before?? I haven't checked and old trailer yet. But those bits strike me as new, along with, of course, Nimoy! The truly gives the trailer gravity, in so many ways. And he looks older than post-Nemesis TNG/DS9/Voyager era, but considering that's sometime after the Unification TV episodes; clearly work on Romulus and elsewhere has taken it's toll on the legend. Hoping for a Shat surprise pre or post-credits; we'll see.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:21 p.m. CST

    Movie might be good BUT

    by Continentalop

I trailer did not send me (you are not alone John Nada). Sure the action looked right, and so did the costumes, but not the tone. My fear now is that is it is going to be some big soap opera in space, all full of young angst, unrequited love and characters trying to prove themselves to the world - and to themselves! <p> Its like Varsity Blues set in space.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:24 p.m. CST

Old age make-up or is Nimoy really that decrepit now?

    by BenBraddock

I liked the first trailer and I like this one too. I think this'll be a winner, you fan-boys should stop whingeing now, please.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:25 p.m. CST

    Well, whadaya know?

    by JumpinJehosaphat

I'm surprised that after the harsh treatment fanboys gave the trailer they'd bother. It seems the geek crowd, in it's typical negative reactionary way, would've shut themselves out of any more specific information from Paramount on this. They must've seen something in the numbers that indicated otherwise.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:25 p.m. CST

    Old Spock!!

    by red_five

His appearance is great to see. However I am still restraining my internal hype-ometer, hoping this doesn't just feel like a film cobbled together with old faces to help garner interest. Here's to hoping it can be a solid new Star Trek that we've all been waiting to see.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:26 p.m. CST

    NICE!!

    Now that is cool news.

    by m_reporter

... to produce even a smudge of excitement for this film. J.J.'s TV work is ok, but MI-3 was really awful. <p> Then again, I was never a big fan of Star Trek...

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:28 p.m. CST

    one new shot? that's it?

    by Kizeesh

wow, so they moved the Eric bana line earlier and stuck 3 secs of Nimoy looking suspiciously like my dead Grandmother in at the end.<p> It's not quite cum in my pants material now is it?

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:29 p.m. CST

Vulcan's live alot longer than humans so...

    by cameron1975willi

    by rev_skarekroe

You make Q the baddie. Q can do anything right? So he brings together all the surviving members of all the Star Trek casts to date! And he makes them all have a big battle royale! <p> Or he makes them have a big orgy. <p> Or both. Let's go with both.

    by KillDozer

Sorry, there's just no way I'm paying for another movie written by these hacks. The trailer looks fine, but it also leaves out any of the wackiness that (much like Transformers) seems like it will pervade this movie based on the early footage previews (giant hands, paralyzed tongues....I wonder which cast member is going to utter the phrase "My bad"?)

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:43 p.m. CST

To the fans who wanted Shatner in this....

    by DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD

I get you wanting him back for nostalgia sake and if Nimoy is in it, you're thinking why the hell not? <p>But would you really want Shatner in this? Really? Isn't he sort of a joke now? He is like a parody of himself almost. How can you take him seriously trying to look all bad ass again? I don't know anyone could take him seriously ever, to be honest. He is sort of the weak link in this franchise. I say stay the fuck away....

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:56 p.m. CST

    But you see, Big Jim...

    by rev_skarekroe

...on the original series they didn't have as many moments where Spock said out of character things for a laugh. Somebody might have a laugh at his expense and then he'd raise his eyebrow quizically and everyone at home would chuckle at the funny alien. At least until Star Trek IV when he comically swore. Actually, the reason I predict it will be Scotty is that he's being played by Simon Pegg, and it's almost too easy to imagine him saying "My bad!" in a Scottish brogue after pushing the wrong button or something.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 12:58 p.m. CST

    by AllieJamison

I don't know shit about Star Trek. I never found something that made it seem intriguing enough that I'd feel the urge to explore that Universe and its different incarnations or ages and crews and spaceships and whatever. But this film looks like it could actually offer an intriguing Sci-fi story. So maybe this film will be my gateway into the Trek world...

    by crankyoldguy

...close the book on that era, so to speak, because his Kirk death was so botched and yeah, a big mistake. Sure, it's nostalgia - I'm old enough to have watched the original as a kidlet, plus the first series of reruns-syndication way back. However, I honestly think he's mighty funny in Boston Legal (which I admit to only watching every so often, though) - my mom watches it and said "I never knew I liked William Shatner." So I'm only thinking the pre or even better, post-credits thing; I don't think it could sink the pic in the least. Plus, these writers are not worse than Akiva Goldsmith - talk about hack work in most cases.

He has been out of the game for awhile and his name doesn't carry much weight with families and passive moviegoers. If this film is a disappointment financing, which it very well might be-- I have a feeling he might just produce or focus on documentaries for the rest of his career.

Between his Priceline commercials and his bloated peacock preening on Boston Legal (with drink in hand), Shatner would take us right out of the picture. It's true that hard sci-fi (which JJ's star trek does NOT look like) is a tough sell these days, what with shit like Twilight raking in the dough. But the guys got some serious pedigree, and also the whole 3D thing going for him and every Hollywood talking head will be blabbing on about how fucking great it looks. We'll see what happens, and while it may not be a massive hit, a la Titanic or TDK, it will still be very successful. Shit, if rubbish like Hancock or Mummy 3 can be hits, then Avatar certainly will.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 1:24 p.m. CST

I guess I have a high Cameron resistance

    by Continentalop

…Because I really have no interest in Avatar. I don't check up on it and the only time I ever hear about it is when one of you guys mention that it is going to eye-fuck me in 2009. I'll wait to the reviews or word of mouth before I decide to see it or not. <p> Of course, I am older, so I guess I am more resilient to hype. Never saw attack of the Clones, only saw Revenge of the Sith because it was a free screening and I promised a friend I would go with her, and never did get around to seeing X2 or Spider-Man 3. <p> On the negative side I have seen Twilight twice now.

Exactly what have we seen? Some discredited alien concept art? Pictures of guys on a mo-cap stage? Anything else? Because there certainly hasn't been a trailer or a hi-res screenshot. In fact, all we have seen from AVATAR is a photograph of film canisters that may or may not contain some sort of production preview. Beyond that, we've only got interviews with folks like Cameron and Weaver and statements from folks (Favreau) who have seen early footage.<P>So, I sure would like to know what people have seen that's got them so unimpressed.

    by alanmoore

...I was against this completely. But now? Maybe; perhaps even probably.<p> Look, I'm a longtime Trek fan; I'm 33 and I have fond memories of the original TOS and I remember - laughingly, now - my own skepticism about The Next Generation when I first saw that shit preview for it on the VHS tape of Star Trek IV. Later on, I grew to love Next Gen, when it actually came out. I even enjoyed those first couple of so-so seasons. Even later I got into DS9 and I was hooked like my grandma was on her "stories" every day. (You can puke now.) Further on, Voyager came out, and ...<p> I hated it. It was utter crap. I may get filleted for saying it, but Enterprise was a better show by far: Better characters, a cooler captain, a niftier ship, fun stories. Perhaps that more than anything - yes it rewrote canon like crazy, but it brought the FUN, an ingredient that Voyager had lacked entirely. I own all four seasons of Enterprise, and to be fair, it's no Next Gen, and it's no TOS. But it was cool and fun, and that's why I eventually paid good money to own what many others consider a "shit" series.<p> <p>Coming back to this movie, I had only a week ago seen merely the original trailer with the guys building the Enterprise. I'd of course read all the buzz and was HIGHLY skeptical, and just didn't know if Orci and Kurtzman had it in them to write a decent movie. I thought the characters and dialogue of Transformers blew, and I thought that they manhandled their own ideas in The Island, a flick best defined by the word "salvagable" but not much else. Also a week or so ago, I had little faith in J.J. Abrams and even less in Orci and Kurtzman.<p>Then came the new trailer, the original version of which we just saw a couple of days ago, and now we have this version.<p>And while my Nerd radar is still blaring out "Alarm, alarm, nonfan a director! Alert, alert, major canon revisions - again!", I can't help but have a little optimism. The visuals look tight; so does the action, and so do the characters. Young Spock and Kirk look "right," and Simon Pegg's Scotty feels right, too, not to mention Karl Uban's McCoy. Yes the dialogue - especially that stupid "Buckle Up!" line - is a little off-feeling.<p>But you know what? So was the dialogue in TOS a lot of times. And the dialogue in ST V. And the dialogue on the first couple seasons of TNG and ENT. So, a few things not withstanding, I'm ready to give it a chance, at least the same chance I gave everything else listed above.<p>One last thing that gives me hope: Orci is a self-professed "Trekker," and he's also a self-described "canonist." If he can deliver on the mere implications of those things, I'll be there Summer 09.

My Star Trek dissapointment first appeared in 1995

    by moondoggy2u

I believe that was the year that Star Trek Generations came out, wasn't it? I mean, I absolutely loved TNG (3rd season to 7th)and was dumbfounded by how bad Generations sucked. Hell, First Contact wasn't exactly anything to write home about, either, and don't even get me started on Insurrection or Nemesis.

But it would be in his best interest to put out a great product.<p> Avatar is shaping up to have what I call "Waterworld Syndrome". When a movie gets so much hype that it becomes impossible for it to live up to it.<p> Just like there were people begging for Waterworld to sink (no pun intended) just to relish in the fact that a very expensive movie failed.<p> Now we will have a whole new generation of people just foaming at the mouth for this thing to fail.<p> I'm talking about nit-picking the ever-fucking shit out of it and having an entire internet to point out it's flaws 24 hours a day.<p> Let me put it this way: If this movie is average then it will fail. If it is good then it will fail. It HAS to be the best ever just to be considered good, due to both the negative cunts rags out there and the people that have hyped the fucking cum out of it.<p>

The only interest I have in Avatar

    by VAwitch

Is seeing how Cameron's pushed the visual tech-envelope. As I've heard very little about the story, that's the only thing of interest to me.<P><P> As for those nay-saying Orci & Kurtzman - as a collector & fan of TFs since 1984 in multiple formats - it wasn't perfect. But other than the Bee peeing & Prime's "my bad" (which was funny if only cuz that is NOT the kind of line you'd expect Peter Cullen or Prime to say) - it could've been a LOT worse. Nice nods to fanboys (&girls), but general enough to snag Joe Public's interest to warrant a sequel, which can get more into using the various types of Transformers. It got my parents to be fans - and they've only had to put up w/ me raving for 25 yrs. I'll give ST:the reboot the benefit of the doubt. It reinvents, yes; but looks like there's enough of the *spirit* of the source material to be enjoyable for current fans (a la Xmen 1&2 - don't start me about the $hit that was X3).

Fuck. This. Shit. "Dawson's Trek" will satisfy no one. The Trekkies fought hard such that Berman and Braga wouldn't foist on us that perennial non-starter of an idea for "Trek Jr.:Starfleet Academy;" and whaddayaknow, ol' JJ goes and resurrects that lame-ass shit and claims it'll draw in the big bucks non-Trek audience. Ain't gonna happen, people. Ain't gonna happen. This film will not make back its production costs, let alone what will surely prove to be the astronomical amounts of money that will be spent trying to up-market this little niche "sciffy" film. It's a losing proposition, spearheaded by Mr. Shiny-Shallow. "Alias" was a disastrous tangle of plot, just as "Lost" continues to be. "MI:3" failed to re-ignite the once powerful Cruise career and "Cloverfield" made me desperately want to exterminate the "naught" generation on sight - preferably via some painful piggybacking twitter-loaded techno-virus. "Dawson's Trek" a/k/a "Starfleet Academy Redux" will follow "Speedracer" and "The Incredible Hulk" into middling nerd obscurity - regardless of the umpteen thousand stories you pump through AICN over the next 6 months. It's futile, JJ. Absolutely futile.

    by MisterE

BsB, I think that all of the Next Generation movies sucked (I did like the middle seasons of the TV series, though), but check out the "Kirkless Generations" fan-made cut of that movie if you can find a copy. It plays like a double-length TNG episode. I downloaded it via bittorrent.

Paying to see a film because it promises to be visually groundbreaking is pathetic why exactly? At least your perhaps going to see something new, which puts it leauges ahead of nearly every other major release film out there. It's certainly no more pathetic than wanting to see a remake of a lame Tv Show from the director of a half decent tv pilot and a slew of shitty other products, written by two of the worst hacks working in the business solely because a fat ginger on a cheap website told you to. Gaius, you have semen in your eye, I might add.

    by DANNYGLOVERS_DICKBLOOD

The marketing worked on me. For the most part I can't stand Star Trek. This will be the first Trek film I ever see in the theater. The only Trek film I've ever been remotely interested in. So keep telling me non-fans don't care and Trekkies don't care and this will bomb. Fuck off.

Although I kind of like "Starfleet Academy Redux" Everyone in the real world that I know, and i'm not bragging; but i know a shit-load of people(nature of my job)...Everyone, trekkie or no trekkie, is excited about this. And that 's just with a short trailer out. Once the market machine starts, we'll have lines around the block, like for Star Trek 4.

    Avatar and Star Trek

    by Droid

Firstly, every cunt on this talkback will see both films and they are delusional if they think they won't.<p>Secondly, I am looking forward to Avatar like no other film. I think it will be great, and I base this purely on my faith in Cameron as a filmmaker. I've not read the treatment, I've not seen the concept art that wasn't real anyway. I want this flick as fresh as possible.<p>Thirdly, I have never voluntarily watched Star Trek in my life. I've seen one of them in a movie marathon over a decade ago. I barely remember it, but it's the one where they brought back the shat. Anyhoo, I do remember that I hated it, that it sucked ass and that it was fucking terrible.<p>Lastly, although I hate it, I will end up seeing the new one. Everyone on this TB will. I fucking guarantee it. Maybe because they are a fan of the show, a fan of JJ (are those people out there?), or like me, really hope its as shit as it looks so you can tell people "Yes, I've seen it, and its fucking terrible." If, by some miracle, its good. I will eat my words and readily admit it. But, for fucks sake people? Lost, Fringe, MI3, Cloverfield? They are all fucking rubbish! Surely the best you could hope for is for it not to be awful.<p>The one last thing I wish to say is, although I hate star trek, it did inspire a great comedy from a few years back that they sorely need to do a sequel to. A little ditty called Galaxy Quest.<p>"By Grabthar's hammer, by the sons of Worvan, you shall be avenged."<p>And that's all I got.<p>Discuss.

    One good thing about Avatar,

    by Archive

and the primary reason I'll see it, is that it's original science fiction content for the screen. It was never a book, never a comic... Thank God. Rather than adapt a vision, whatever Avatar ends up being will live and grow in the filmmaking process, with actors, designers, and the writer and director... Now that the vocabulary of film is so well understood (or is it?) we should be seeing a lot more of this kind of content than we are. One hundred years is long enough to get the toolbox down.

  • Nov. 25, 2008, 5:24 p.m. CST

    Archive

    by kwisatzhaderach

The reason we don't see more projects like Avatar is that most filmmakers don't have Cameron's passion and vision. Cameron gets into the nuts and bolts of his worlds and makes them totally believable. That's why I have a hard time understanding anybody that says a film like The Abyss is shit. I mean, Ed Harris' performance in that film is unbelievable.

I hope Titanic's (totally undeserved) success didn't go to his head and cause him to rest on his laurels. Going back to sci-fi is a good move, but leave the self-indulgence at the door please mate.

A really old Optimus Prime (resurrected, just like Spock) sits around with Spock, saying things like "Live long and prosper." "Transform and roll out." and "My bad." The sequel Trans Trek will open against Avengers. You know it to be true.

    by SingingHatchet

The first half will be directed by Michael Bay. It will be mostly explosions. The second half will be directed by JJ Abrams. It will mostly be an convoluted plot that no one will follow and will leave about, say a dozen unexplained loose ends. And Spock will have flames tattooed on his forehead.

    And since someone mentioned Enterprise...

    by Bill Clay

The first 2 seasons sucked. The 9/11 story arc in season 3 was mildly entertaining. But season 4 ROCKED! Almost every episode had a connection to TOS Trek and actually followed established canon. We even got an episode explaining why Klingons developed head ridges! If they could have started with the season 4 production team right at the start of the series, they would have made the show a success.

    by snappy

The roof is up on the Stingray at the beginning of the trailer, but down by the time they reach the cliff edge. Was baby-Kirk so far in front that he decided to stop & lower the roof to make the chase more interesting? Or did he know he'd have to bail out and couldn't fit through the side window? We need answers. As for the movie, colour me unexcited. The SFX looks good, but JJA has a knack of overcomplicating stories and leaving in plot holes you could drive a bus through.

Dig the new bit with Nimoy/Spock. Obviously, Spock is done up to purposely appear much older. Nimoy is getting up there, but they could've made him look quite a bit younger but the story demanded otherwise. It's GREAT to see Spock on the big screen at least one more time! Live long and prosper Mr. Nimoy!

    Brilliant Marketing

    by DeeJay

This "second" version of the trailer is brillaint marketing, to say the least. Abrams and company can credit themselves with good use of the "just seeing if you were paying attention" technique. After all... who among us *wasn't* hoping it would be Nimoy at the end of the trailer? I suspect that the Abrams crew is going to put this franchise back on the map with this film. the only real question is whether it can generate as much revenue as "Transformers 2." Its almost as if Bay and Abrams are playing poker with one another, right now. By the way... do we know, for a fact, if any other prior "Star Trek" characters will be appearing in this film?

  • Nov. 26, 2008, 11:47 a.m. CST

    Kurzinski...

    by DeeJay

... don't let the negativity get to you, fellow poster! Just as we saw with the criticism of the ship being constructed on Earth (which was how has the "gravity well" explanation), this will all be revealed in time. Fellow posters like Ape just want to show their passion for the franchise in their own way. When all is said and done, would you expect any less passion for a fictional universe that has essentially generated so many real-life scientists and scientific products?

re: Big Dumb Ape - Kirk being a Moron

    by OneBuckFilms

Kirk is has big brass ones (The Corbomite Manuever), and has a lot of daredevil in him (Star Trek V, the Kirk drop-kicks in TOS). That combined with the fact that kids will do the dumbest things, even when they should know better, tells me this is plausible and in character. It would take that kind of energy, stubbornness, defiance and stones to become the youngest captain in Starfleet history at that point.

This is what the trailer needed

    by harmil

I came out of whatever film it was saying that leaving him out was a huge mistake, and I'm glad to see they've fixed it. That said, why the heck would you open up on a scene with a child Kirk?! That's a huge mistake as well. It sets the view on the path of looking at the entire film as "Trek Babies" and that's not what it is at all. I haven't seen the film, but just from the material shown here, I would think that a slow reveal of Kirk seeing the Enterprise being built would have been the right place to start. You need to establish a sense of wonder and reverence for the franchise and what it has meant to people. Just throwing a kiddie Kirk at us feels like a slap in the face.

You must be joking. Why on Earth would any self-respecting SF fan miss either one?! Cameron has been waiting for the tech to do Avatar right for a decade. Trek fans have been waiting for the end of the Voyager/Enterprise take on Trek for longer. It's time for Avatar and for Trek, and I'm going to love every minute of both.

... I respect where you're coming from, but disagree completely. Starting off with a shot of the Enterprise assumes that most people (in theaters) viewing the trailer would know what it was. Like it or not, that's somewhat questionable these days. Starting-off with a present-day muscle car, showing a rebelious kid, revealing that this is all happening in the future and *then* dropping the bomb that this was about "Star Trek" was complete genius. Using the "pegs" of Kirk riding a motorcycle and wearing a leather jacket enhanced the reasonance of Kirk's character being a rebelious personality. Focusing on some of Spock's fascinating cultural heritage was also brilliant. After all, how many non Trekkies/Trekkers even know that Spock is biracial? Checking out Google Trends, one can see that the trailer has increased interest in the film around the globe (though primarily in western nations). In short, goal #1 has been met... and it looks as if Paramount was wise to push the release back to summer 2009.

You show any random person on the street a picture of the Enterprise and they'll know what it is. I know girls who could give two shits about Star Trek that know what the Enterprise is. Of course there's always somebody who's been living in a cave who doesn't know who Darth Vader is, who Spider-Man is, or what the American Flag looks like. You can't search through your channels at any given time without coming across Star Trek. So please, don't tell me that movie audiences don't know what the Enterprise is.

    Klingons & stuff

    by u.k. star

Eric Bana is fighting a couple of Klingons in that trailer, and judging by the masks they are the bumpy head types. <p> The trailer has worked as well as any trailer can at attracting the target audience. Also yes, there are many, many people, especially outside the Us where Trek movies make hardly any money (U.K & Germany excepted) who haven't got a clue about the old school Enterprise. they "MAY" be able to guess what it is based on similarty to next gen enterprises, but TOS is a show of the 60s repeated in the 70s with movies (mostly) in the 80s. You could very happily be born in 1990 nd never have seen the old 1701 or 1701a on tv or movie screens. As sid above the purpose of starting the trailer (and the movie) with things that look like they could be from today is to ground it and THEN to go to the sci-fi / Star Trek stuff. It works, it's a fact that can be verified all over the net. It's also a reason I suscpect the Spock clip isn't on the "real" trailer, it ends the trailer with an old guy, more so anyone that has just been convinced that maybe Star Trek is not just for geeks, has themselves reminded of a classic "geek" thing. That's not to say I have problem with it, merely seeing t from the point of view of having to attracty a new fanbase for Trek to survive.

The TOS episode "Piece of the Action"? It wasn't very good, but talking about Kirk driving the Vette got me remembering it. that particular episode is set back in the mob wars of 1920's Chicago. I remember Kirk and Spock getting into an old car. Kirk doesn't know how to drive it....hmmm? There goes another piece of screwed continuity. If he can supposedly drive a Vette like that, he would have had no problem with that other old car. I know, I'm a geek.

...UK Star precisely articulated what I was getting at. Also; the audience reaction you mentioned was primarily a by-product of the Abrams crew not hammering you with an image of the Enterprise right off of the bat... especially considering the fact that some people would either not know what it was or perhaps, not recognize it right off of the bat. Introducing James Kirk and *then* showing the Enterprise was the right thing to do, because the character of Kirk (which is basically tied to all things William Shatner) is far more recognizable than any Starfleet craft. By the way; if the girls you mentioned like genre fans such as yourself, then I'm SURE they'd make themselves at least partially familiar with the Enterprise :-) Red_Five... you make an interesting point, but if the car in "Piece of the Action" was a 1920's-era vehicle, I'd go so far as to say that some of those vehicles aren't as driveable as an early-60's speedster. Heck, some cars circa 1920 didn't even have accelerator pedals, so I'd question how many posters on AICN could get such an engine running. Just read Wikipedia's description of the Model T, and you'll get a sense of what I mean. I don't mean to nitpick you here, but you do realize that you're criticizing what has to be one of the most meticulous crews in Hollywood, don't you?

If you're intentional enough, couldn't you also make a 3-D image that could be viewed with the cheap version of the plastic glasses? If so, the main challenge would be finding something akin to a screen that you'd be able to project a moving image.

I'll buy that. Makes sense. I do like the way the trailer catches you by surprise. Very clever. The girls I was talking about mostly hate Star Trek. But they know what it is. They didn't familiarize themselves with it after meeting me. In fact, I was never that huge into Star Trek (I liked the movies, didn't keep up with the shows) until after I worked on the web site for one of the actors in this particular movie. My point is the Enterprise is just one of those iconic images that I think 99% of people will recognize.

  • Nov. 26, 2008, 6:14 p.m. CST

    iconic

    by u.k. star

It's still an iconic image, but 1st off, the shot of it in the trailer, being built in the midst of the support scffolds etc isn't neccessarily recognisavble to a non fan, or to the person that's seen a pic or 2 of it years ago. It has enough of a "is that...? what is that?.. it kinda looks familiar, about it. 2ndly I think it's like I said before. TOS Trek basically ended in 1991 with Trek VI. So you could be 22 now and the last TOS movie was out when you were 5. After that bar the odd daytime reru of a Trek film at Christmas or Easter, you could never see The Enterprise. Britain's probably the biggest Trek fan base outside the US (although again based on movie grosses outside the Us that doesn't mean too much, and I can promise you there's plenty of people under 25 here who wouldn't have a clue about what the old enterprise looked like. Just like they don't know the "iconic" poncho - cigar - hat of the man with no name, or (until May when we "older" guys went nuts" the incredibly iconic (to my peers) Fedora and whip of Indiana Jones. Some things just get a little less well known, with younger people, over time.

    by u.k. star

The problem with setting it in the "future" of Trek is it kinda still infers a need to have een a certain amount of Trek to be able to see the movie. One of the main aims for Paramount is to go through thatt ceiling (around $140m worldwide) that Trek movies have fallen into. Similar to Batman Begins & Bond, theyt've gone right back to the beginning; prety muchsaying it doesn't matter if you've never seen Trek, this is the start of it all. I'm not saying it's a good or bad idea, (although it's clearly worked wonders for Batman & Bond), just saying what a major reasons.

    Not a Fan looping....

    by seniorspeilbergio

I agree with the other talkbackers who say they should keep going forward in time with a new crew/ship. Does this movie look visually dynamic? Sure. More so than any Trek in a long while? Absolutely. Did Star Trek need new creative talent at the helm to push it in a fresh, new direction? No doubt. But all the cool images I just saw would have worked just fine with a new crew and a new ship. Trek, like Star Wars; is set in a vast landscape of imagination with enough breathing room to where there's no need to repeat anything seen previously. Both creative universes span an entire galaxy so I really don't understand looping back on this enormous timeline to reinvent characters and events we're already familiar with. This isn't Bond or Batman where it's already established that different actors come in to take over the reins from the old. Both of those properties are more about iconic, archetypal characters that are more symbolic images that have always transformed to take on the asthetic(?) values of the changing times. Not Trek, though. The characters are tied to the actors who play them. Indiana Jones is the same way. Who else can play that character? No one. Oh, sure. River Phoenix stepped in to play him as a teenager in a brief flashback but no one else could ever replace him inside the canon of the actual adventure/quest. In much the same way, the idea of seeing Kirk as a 12 year old is just fine with me as opposed to seeing someone else besides Shatner play him in Command Mode. I don't like these giant SF properties having to "revisit" anything from the past when it's constantly implied that there's much more going on outside the stories we've been told than can ever be shown. In much the same way, I hated seeing the same alien designs in the background of the Star Wars prequels that I had already seen in the original trilogy. That nightclub in Attack Of The Clones is just unforgivable. Watching that sequence, I could literally feel the Star Wars galaxy shrink in my mind. And now, in Trek, we have to loop over familiar territory yet again, in a future where we're told only 15% of the galaxy has been explored by the Next Generation era. I would have preferred it if these filmmakers had decided to explore some of that, especially with a director/creator at the helm who insists "he never got into Star Trek", or whatever the quote was. As some others have said, "I preferred the idea of Trek more than the execution". I think JJ feels the same way, so why not play with the idea and simultaneously separate yourself from previous executions. Even the originator of this universe found new success doing just that. And that doesn't mean you can't still pay homage to the other shows and movies. I would have loved to have seen a new adventure that took place a hundred years after TNG with a crew who are all in an enormous starship (bigger than any we have seen before)being awakened from suspended animation after finally reaching the Andromeda Galaxy. The first Federation crew to do so. Have them encounter all new alien races that look nothing like humanoids. This is a galaxy not seeded by humanoid-looking Preservers so Trek can finally be freed from that idea and get REALLY CRAZY with alien designs. Have an alien captain who is part human, part alien who is a the grandson of Kirk. The product of one of Kirks' many alien love affairs. His first officer is a female descendant of Picard. The offspring of the two greatest Captains in Starfleet history. There's just too much new territory to explore here without reinventing old characters and old situations. As many have pointed out, Star Trek is about moving forward, not backward. And feel free to criticize my story examples. There only that. Examples of what could be done. I still think it's possible to please the fans and still excite a new audience, that's all I'm saying.

    by DeeJay

... while it's clear that the Abrams crew wants to incorporate better visuals, interesting camera angles and Spielberg-style pacing into the upcoming "Star Trek" film, don't you think it's a little unfair to say they "fear anything 'science-fictional?'" The movie is still more than 5 months away, and it's already generating dialog about 2 different scientific concepts (the gravitational well & practical holography). JimmyJoe... wouldn't you agree that there would be some huge challenges with placing a story further into the "Star Trek" continuum? The first being that the general public now acknowledges that we have no idea what society will look like at that time. Heck, we can't even effectively cast characters to play humans for a future that far off, because it's doubtful that we'll even look anything like most current visions that are a few centuries forward (the ones that might be scientifically sound would be less than marketable in the eyes of most Hollywood execs). Ultimately, it just doesn't look as if going forward is practical in this particular scenario... and I'm someone who's almost always in favor of advancing a genre project's narrative/storyline forward.

    IMO

    by 24AliasFan

I've been watching Star Trek since I was 10 back in 1978. So TOS holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I thoroughly enjoyed TNG and came to appreciate the true depth of DS9. But TOS is the one that really hits home for me. I don't know how many thousands of hours I've spent watching those episodes, but I've enjoyed every minute of it. While there are certain parts of the Star Trek canon that are sacred, many are not. Whether the Enterprise was built on Earth, in orbit, or the Utopian Planitia Yards on Mars is insignificant. And such minutiae as whether Kirk could drive the car in 'A Piece of the Action' based on the opening scene in the trailer isn't even worth thinking about. Continuity IS important, but even TOS couldn't stay 100% consistent with itself. It contradicted itself more than once during its three-year run. Hell, in the very first episode, he was James R. Kirk instead of James T. Kirk. I for one am glad that JJ has blown the dust off the old franchise and look forward to May 2009. It may not (and probably cannot) live up to my heightened expectations, but I feel that it will be lightyears better than most of the movies have been.
