Report on AMERICAN BEAUTY, THE FIGHT CLUB and THE VIRGIN MARY

Alright, here's a selection of some good flicks to keep an eye out for. However, in regards to THE FIGHT CLUB, the scooper talks about how reshoots are indicative of a 'troubled film'. Actually this is not always the case, in fact often times reshoots are just a director fixing and being given the resources to fix the bits he isn't quite happy with. Mechanic has stated publicly that he won't be testing this film as he trusts Fincher's vision for the movie. That being said, back in February we did have a spy who at least claimed to have seen THE FIGHT CLUB and wrote a review CLICK HERE TO READ IT! I have faith in this project, and like many fans... I'd love to see Fincher playing with the FORCE a bit...

you say you haven't heard much about American Beauty (now-filming Kevin Spacey flick) I haven't seen it, but I've read it. a damn solid script if I ever read one. it's narrated by Spacey's character after he is murdered and his daughter (Thora Birch) and her boyfriend have been arrested for the crime. of course they didn't do it, but they take the rap for it anyway because of a rather sexy but incriminating video the film-school boyfriend made in which the daughter comments that she'd like to kill her father. what this really is is just your run of the mill parent-hating teen angst comment but the authorities connect it with the sexual relationship her father was having with her best friend (played by Mena Suvari). The story rides on us thinking we're going to find out who actually did it and that the poor kids are going to get out of this nasty mess, but they don't. we DO find out who the killer was but it's in a sort of impossible POV scene A La Citizen Kane in which no one but the audience and the killer could have seen what happened. The film is unique in this sense and in another. While there is this dark, murder-intrigue and statutory lust aspect to the script, it's also comedic. Kevin Spacey quits his job, sick of trying to please his less than supportive family and spends months lounging around the house smoking pot and lusting for his daughter's best friend. You aren't going to get any one-liners out of this one, but it's the sort of thing where you'll either be disgusted with the situation or find it amusing. Rounding out the cast of characters are Annette Bening as Spacey's wife, two gay men who live next door and have the same name and another militant nazi-type neighbor. If you want to read it I can se if we still have a copy at work, but it was in the office about a year ago.

Also, in your section on projects that you are covering, perhaps I missed it but I didn't see anything on American Pie. I read this about a year ago as well and it is HYSTERICAL. I've never read a script that made me laugh out loud as long and hard as this one did. Sure to become a comedic classic. It IS a high school comedy (and aren't we getting sick of those) but this one is so outrageous that it easily stands apart from all the others.

The Fight Club - I heard they rewrote the ending. Actually, I know they did because (REMOVED TO PROTECT SOURCE) I've seen reshoot activity start up again at least twice in the months after the film was supposed to have wrapped in November. a fairly long shoot. About six months (June-Nov). Indicative of problems, perhaps? I don't know Fincher's on-set habits, if he's naturally that time-consuming. I've seen the soundstage sets - VERY David Fincher. Dark, dirty, moody. To my knowledge, it is still being edited. I have yet to hear of test screenings taking place.

One more thing...there's a project in development called The Virgin Mary, Jennifer Aniston attached to star, Fox 2000 producing. About a woman who is about to turn 30 and still hasn't lost her virignity. there was a blurb about it in the trades awhile back. it may spend awhile in development hell because of the plot problems (starts out well, but has an absolute train-wreck of an ending) but definitely promising.
