Ricky Gervais Gets On with the Deceased in a Very Pleasant Trailer for GHOST TOWN!
Beaks here...
This looks familiar. But if you've got to recycle the ol' "regular guy communes with apparitions and learns shit" narrative, you can't do much better than Ricky Gervais as a snide Cosmo Topper.
Seriously, this is a very slick trailer. Hearing Eumir Deodato's "Also sprach Zarathustra" kicking up on the soundtrack puts me in a happy BEING THERE mood, while the use of "I'm Looking Through You" reminds me how much the ending of Wes Anderson's THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS suffered when he failed to secure the rights to the classic Beatles tune. Yes, it's derivative as all hell, but the presence of Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Kristen Wiig puts it over (in other words, I'll give THE RED STAR a big ol' pass if they cast Gervais as the mighty Sirdar). Kinda hard to believe this was written and directed by David Koepp.
Dreamworks will roll out GHOST TOWN on September 19th.

love it

not sure yet
-
Romantic comedies starring Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni.... not so much.
-
Wow...seen this many-a-times!
-
he's good at the first part, where he doesn't like people, but not with the rest. I love Ricky, but this isn't his thing. Plus, the first part feels like As Good As It Gets, and then Greg Kinnear shows up.....weird, huh.
-
And what the fuck making fun of Koepp because it's the cool thing to do. The man made Stir of Echoes for shit's sake. Legendary!!!!!!
-
to say this looks like "The Sixth Sense 2: The Lighter Side of the Other Side"
-
I'm guessing no since it doesn't mention it. Whatever happened with that project that Harry was producing?
-
... but didn't. Meh is the word.
-
since you've seen it "many-a-times", instead of coming here and complaining about it.
-
...but he looks uncomfortable in the role and looks totally unfunny.
The whole trailer is badly produced and plays like a straight to dvd movie. -
i'm sorry but theres not alot pleasant abt this trailer. this looks awful. remember bill cosby in ghost dad, or patrick swayze in ghost or paul hogan in almost an angel or hayley joel osment in sixth sense or yabba dabba dooba .... dabba .... i'm a big fan of gervais, but i agree with the comment above, he looks miscast in this, hes far better in his own material, when he's not afraid of offending ppl, this feels like a capra esque style feelgood low brow comedy, which is fine, but gervais, you know you can do better, and heres hoping u will deliver with ur upcoming film this side of the truth ..... p.s i know i havnt seen this film, these comments are merely a first impression of the trailer and therfor not a judgement of a film i havnt seen yet, ok!
-
It sure feels like it anyway. It looks pleasant fun though. It reminds me for some reason of early 80s movies. I almost expected to see a Sydney Pollack cameo (RIP).
-
What's that other Gervais movie coming out that seems cool? Something about lying?

Dead Karl Pilkington has a head like a f'ing rotten orange
by grandmufftarkin
He can eat a knob at night...
-
the movie you are enquiring abt is called this side of the truth and stars gervais alongside jennifer garner, who has incidentally gone way down in my estimation (not that she was ever that high up in the first place) since her snubbing of the legendary gary busey at the oscar red carpet this year
-
His cameos suck, for sure, because he's funny the longer he's on. The Office and Extras and even his website podcasts are pure evil hilariousness. Why? Because he's Ricky at The Office and Ricky as an Extra and Ricky as himself and that is what makes the office and being an extra and boring ass real life shit funny... Ricky. If he can make that shit funny, then he sure as hell can make seeing Ghosts funny.
-
Nice.
-
That trailer couldn't even make me smile, yet alone laugh - not convinced this is going to be much good.
-
God, I love lunch.

This was pulled from some UK movie site. I have a sneaking suspicion that this IS Harry's film, or was at some point.
"Aint It Cool News honcho Harry Knowles has landed a production deal at
Revolution Studios. He'll produce the comedy Ghost Town, based on a pitch by
Knowles himself. “Two weeks ago, the studio heads came to town and I had a
list of 50 projects,” he explained. “They liked this original concept I'd
come up with. I threw out the name of a writer they thought would be perfect
and we are negotiating with him." He is, however, expecting a backlash.
“When anything good happens to me, there is a collective outburst of
unfettered jealousy and anger," added the lucky ginger-haired b*****d."
-
Is fish out of water in Hollywood. and Ditto Asheley Jensen, Jasper Carrots daughter, actress who plays dawn. as is martin freeman. If gervaise was to make a film with them and Stephen Merchant. a lot of people would go to see that film in a heartbeat. He reminds me of one of those characters in Barton Fink. He will go to hollywood get some success, very quickly. Then get writers block. Hollywood will demand more and more from him. They will give him a shot at a sitcom, stick him with writers who will have orders from on to get more office stuff from him. or god forbid he will end up at UA working for Tom Cruise.
-
Better than Ricky Gervais, from what I saw. Nothing against Ricky but he looks out of place. Hopefully in the full film, it'll all work better.Didn't Robert Downey Jr. do this in 1993? Heart and Souls? This reminded me of that, and Just Like Heaven, with Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon. With a little bit of The Frighteners and Ghost thrown in.
-
They should call it Harry's Ghost Town. And then give Harry and cameo as a guy who choked on a pickle while trying to set the Guiness book world record for most hamburgers consumed in a single hour.
-
is kevin bacons greatest performance. next to that alcatraz film he made with Christian Slater.
-
knee
-
Don't this remind you of it??
-
for making me laugh
-
http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=16300You have to remove the spaces. He announced it in 2003. Not sure if this is the same thing, or if Harry just "lost it" to the suits. Damn you, Suits!
-
Merrick posted this in March, 2007:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32055"This GHOST TOWN Is Not Harry's GHOST TOWN...It's A Different GHOST TOWN!!" -
Well, I think it looks fun.
-
bacon. whose best performance is friday the 13th. when he died. the movie has been made a million times but this looks ok. particularly the first part.
-
This guy was involved in so many poor scripts you want to knee the guy in the nuts. On the other hand, his DVD commentaries are highly entertaining and he comes across as funny and likable, so I cut him some slack and give this one the benefit of the doubt. The DVD could be a blast with Koepp and Gervais commentary.
-
Harry's was a singing cowboy supernatural-themed Western. Seriously. Ghosts. Musical numbers. Shoot-outs. Decidedly not this.
-
Have a screenplay, Mori?
-
but it was weird to see Gervais in something like this. VERY derivative from the man who has been so innovative. I really hope to God he doesn't end up kissing Tea Leoni as I would barf. And she did that line, running away from Gervais "so you can see my dead husband?" do you know how upsetting that is for a widow like me? the pain so fresh? I thought we could be friends but I'll never be able to trust you again, only for him to then prove he really is able to speak to her husband by Greg Kinnear telling him only something he could know and FUCK ME you know exactly how this will go.
-
Then I report that this is retarded. Look around, does any look impressed?
-
Better than all these endless bloody remakes
-
Yet another one of the films that premieres at the festival and then goes into wide release the following week. I never know why anyone bothers to see films like that.
-
I actually got to go to screening in Kansas City. David Koepp was there but I didn't get to meet him. The movie was a total piece of shit. I'm not kidding. I was excited to go see it and about 15 minutes into it I was ready to walk out. And I like Ricky Gervais.
-
Nah, I'm kidding. I haven't seen it. I just didn't want to be left out.
-
It's Kinda Growing on me. But this just seems like the wrong role for Gervais.
-
Why go with Tea Leoni if you already have Wiig on hand?
-
Whoever is cast opposite Tea Leoni and can fake romantic interest should get an honorary Oscar. No one likes her or finds her attractive, not even David Duchovny...which is why he fucked my friend on a movie set a year ago.
-
by The Beach Boys for the end credits. Maybe there was a Beatles tune before that, but I saw an early NYU screening and that was the song attached but it was mentioned that it would have to be changed.
-
hmm... will Shia LaBeouf make a wacky cameo in it?
-
We all would be saying this looks gayer than Nathan Lane laying pipe to Harvey Fierstein.
However, it is Ricky Gervais - so it's probably worth a rent. -

-
I laughed at that bit, the rest of it... meh.
-
seen this a million times already...although I'd pay to watch it if Karl Pilkington had a cameo
-
I think it looks like a nice little film - and he's perfectly cast as a misanthrope. That look on his face as he closes the elevator door is perfect. Why do you fuckers live to be negative? And why do you hate romantic-comedies? Is it because you don't like women or they don't like you? Should EVERY movie be a superhero movie? Is that what you want? Sad...fucks. Especially the UK edition of sad fucks because it sure seems like you enjoy and hope for your celebrities to fail. He's gone "Hollywood", so now he sucks. Oh shut the fuck up. The guy is funny and there's no reason he can't be funny in an American movie. Some days these talkbacks are just fucking depressing.
-
deffinately looks like an 80s comedy.
-
is that they have been dying a death for years. Working title were the kings of the modern rom com for so long that nobody else bothered to do them.
-
I have a slightly different take. I think Richard Curtis did more damage to the art form than anybody else. Well, him and Nancy Myers. God help us. When done right, nothing will make you feel better than a good romantic-comedy. Unless you're just a sad fuck who only cares about comic con.
-
and i know this will blow dk out of the water...btw, are they ever gonna stop typcasting gervais as an obnoxious fuck who hates everyone? i mean, hes really good at it, but shit, let him do something else for once...like bang a hot broad
-
I have enough goodwill built up to Gervais to rent or download this. The Lying Movie he's doing sounds better though.
-
ever seen an englishman's teeth?? bwahahahahahahaha...
-
Britain's current knife-crime problem didn't stretch to the editing suite and put this obvious stinker out of its misery. The lamest trailer I've seen all year.
-
reminds me of a joke:
You ride into town on your horse, there's 2 barbershops, one's kind of dirty, the barber has a terrible haircut. On the other hand, the other shop is immaculately clean, not a speck of dust and the barber is clean shaven with a respectable haircut. Which barber do you visit? The dirty one... where do you think the clean barber got his haircut? -
it's written & directed David "Capt. Mediocre of the USS Suck" Koepp. pfft..loser.

by blackmantis
...would I ever go see that piece of shit. Talk about a stale concept.
-
I love Gervais an insane amount but I don't know if I can do this one. I even really like the rest of the cast and I have no interest. Hopefully his directorial feature debut about the guy who tells the first lie will kick a lot more ass than this trifling little piece of boring.
-
Funniest shit i ever heard coming out the mouth of Cheegars!
Doesn't look as funny as Extras or the Office, Obviously. They are perfection and it's all yanked up but it's still Ricky The Frick Gervais! I will laugh at his funny doughy head if nothing else and it might turn out to be a glittery turd(Ricky you are the glitter!) it's got to be better than that new Eddie Murphy Shite!note to Mr Gervais - If you ever end up in a movie where you are a tiny, weeny version of your self inside a big you, Shoot yourself in the back of the head with a rigged shotgun hooked up to the door handle and call Steve Martin to come and trigger it by opening the door. -
...with a sprinkle of Ghost Dad.
-
Didn't see you made most of those comparisons already.
-
Seriously. Ricky, mix it up a little. Or, just take the money and run.
-
It's like simultaneously fucking Jessica Alba and a walrus. I'll pass and wait til This Side of Truth comes out just in case Gervais has to spout any 'I Like Ike' bullshit in this one.
-
Holy shit, that's lame. No wonder that project fucking died.
-
Or Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Swayze?
I think Gervais is great, but the lead character trying to wrap up loose ends for a ghost has been a bit overdone. -
god bless karl pilkington.
a resounding MEH to this movie -
Of coures, Jennifer Garner snubbed Gary Busey. He was behaving like a fucking lunatic (edited clips make him appear more subdued). Did you see this jerk at SNL's 25th Anniversary? He was ready to kick Billy Crystal's ass (seriously!). Remember, this guy's now working for Charles Band (Busey is the voice of the Gingerdead Man. Ugh!).
-
on the trailer. A 'pleasant' surprise, that is. For a 'pleasant' trailer.
-
with the spirit of say Howard Hawkes or billy wilder. The only people who seem to be doing this are the coen bros. I dont see why hollywood doesnt try.
-
Uggggh this movie looks Lame, Lamer, Lamest. It's just one big cliche.
Hey movie fans, check out this great new blog. it's at thebitterproducer.blogspot.com -
because after reading the post here, I immediately thought "frighteners 2" but I have to say, this Mr Gervais certainly knows how to play this role.
He reminds me of a british Bob Newhart, to be quite honest about it.
I may be tempted to see this one. -
to paraphrase cleveland on _family guy_, 's'wrong witchoo? am i the only man who thinks she's everything tina fey should be (greater range, funnier, more fuckable...)?? that's fine, fanboys -- leave her to me!! she will be mine....oh, yes. she will be mine....in my mind. at home. with the bathroom door locked.
kristen.... -
...that this is the best script that he has read in FIVE years. Now he may not have amazing range as an actor (as of yet), but I think that his ability to know great writing when he sees it is better than most. I, for one, am sold on this, and Koepp's a promising director too.
-
Can I meet a millionaire there? Because that's what I'm really looking for.
-
Boy they are really desperate to never even accidentally do anything original ever again aren't they?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107091/ -
that he will do anything to get a laugh. there is in gervaise a vicious streak and people that work with have experienced it. its no joke, either. he can be borderline obnoxious.Merchants and gervaises editor on office and the extras got his face tapped up with sellotape. karl plikington remembered one day when gervais got him into a headlock a very tight one and he nearly passed out there was a very good program on channel 4 called new heroeos of comedy. The one about gervaise was superb, it was a very daring show. it did not pull any punches. there were no luvies attempting to kiss his ass. Chris rock was on it and he thought that Gervaise was doing too much and that he feared gervaise would be dead in decade from working to hard. the biggest compliment came from Billy connolly who went to see gervaise do stand up and he was blown away.
