Ricky Gervais Gets On with the Deceased in a Very Pleasant Trailer for GHOST TOWN!

Published at:  Jul 14, 2008 5:03:00 PM CDT

Beaks here...

This looks familiar. But if you've got to recycle the ol' "regular guy communes with apparitions and learns shit" narrative, you can't do much better than Ricky Gervais as a snide Cosmo Topper.

Seriously, this is a very slick trailer. Hearing Eumir Deodato's "Also sprach Zarathustra" kicking up on the soundtrack puts me in a happy BEING THERE mood, while the use of "I'm Looking Through You" reminds me how much the ending of Wes Anderson's THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS suffered when he failed to secure the rights to the classic Beatles tune. Yes, it's derivative as all hell, but the presence of Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Kristen Wiig puts it over (in other words, I'll give THE RED STAR a big ol' pass if they cast Gervais as the mighty Sirdar). Kinda hard to believe this was written and directed by David Koepp.

Dreamworks will roll out GHOST TOWN on September 19th.

he's good at the first part, where he doesn't like people, but not with the rest. I love Ricky, but this isn't his thing. Plus, the first part feels like As Good As It Gets, and then Greg Kinnear shows up.....weird, huh.

i'm sorry but theres not alot pleasant abt this trailer. this looks awful. remember bill cosby in ghost dad, or patrick swayze in ghost or paul hogan in almost an angel or hayley joel osment in sixth sense or yabba dabba dooba .... dabba .... i'm a big fan of gervais, but i agree with the comment above, he looks miscast in this, hes far better in his own material, when he's not afraid of offending ppl, this feels like a capra esque style feelgood low brow comedy, which is fine, but gervais, you know you can do better, and heres hoping u will deliver with ur upcoming film this side of the truth ..... p.s i know i havnt seen this film, these comments are merely a first impression of the trailer and therfor not a judgement of a film i havnt seen yet, ok!

    by antonphd

His cameos suck, for sure, because he's funny the longer he's on. The Office and Extras and even his website podcasts are pure evil hilariousness. Why? Because he's Ricky at The Office and Ricky as an Extra and Ricky as himself and that is what makes the office and being an extra and boring ass real life shit funny... Ricky. If he can make that shit funny, then he sure as hell can make seeing Ghosts funny.

    Harry's Ghost Town

    by samblackchvrch21

This was pulled from some UK movie site. I have a sneaking suspicion that this IS Harry's film, or was at some point.

"Aint It Cool News honcho Harry Knowles has landed a production deal at
Revolution Studios. He'll produce the comedy Ghost Town, based on a pitch by
Knowles himself. “Two weeks ago, the studio heads came to town and I had a
list of 50 projects,” he explained. “They liked this original concept I'd
come up with. I threw out the name of a writer they thought would be perfect
and we are negotiating with him." He is, however, expecting a backlash.
“When anything good happens to me, there is a collective outburst of
unfettered jealousy and anger," added the lucky ginger-haired b*****d."

    Ricky Gervaise....

    by emeraldboy

Is fish out of water in Hollywood. and Ditto Asheley Jensen, Jasper Carrots daughter, actress who plays dawn. as is martin freeman. If gervaise was to make a film with them and Stephen Merchant. a lot of people would go to see that film in a heartbeat. He reminds me of one of those characters in Barton Fink. He will go to hollywood get some success, very quickly. Then get writers block. Hollywood will demand more and more from him. They will give him a shot at a sitcom, stick him with writers who will have orders from on to get more office stuff from him. or god forbid he will end up at UA working for Tom Cruise.

Better than Ricky Gervais, from what I saw. Nothing against Ricky but he looks out of place. Hopefully in the full film, it'll all work better.Didn't Robert Downey Jr. do this in 1993? Heart and Souls? This reminded me of that, and Just Like Heaven, with Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon. With a little bit of The Frighteners and Ghost thrown in.

    by donrivella

This guy was involved in so many poor scripts you want to knee the guy in the nuts. On the other hand, his DVD commentaries are highly entertaining and he comes across as funny and likable, so I cut him some slack and give this one the benefit of the doubt. The DVD could be a blast with Koepp and Gervais commentary.

but it was weird to see Gervais in something like this. VERY derivative from the man who has been so innovative. I really hope to God he doesn't end up kissing Tea Leoni as I would barf. And she did that line, running away from Gervais "so you can see my dead husband?" do you know how upsetting that is for a widow like me? the pain so fresh? I thought we could be friends but I'll never be able to trust you again, only for him to then prove he really is able to speak to her husband by Greg Kinnear telling him only something he could know and FUCK ME you know exactly how this will go.

What A Sad Bunch Of Fucks You All Are

    by rebeck2

I think it looks like a nice little film - and he's perfectly cast as a misanthrope. That look on his face as he closes the elevator door is perfect. Why do you fuckers live to be negative? And why do you hate romantic-comedies? Is it because you don't like women or they don't like you? Should EVERY movie be a superhero movie? Is that what you want? Sad...fucks. Especially the UK edition of sad fucks because it sure seems like you enjoy and hope for your celebrities to fail. He's gone "Hollywood", so now he sucks. Oh shut the fuck up. Gervais has gone on record as saying....

    by dirkd13"

...that this is the best script that he has read in FIVE years. Now he may not have amazing range as an actor (as of yet), but I think that his ability to know great writing when he sees it is better than most. I, for one, am sold on this, and Koepp's a promising director too.

gervaise says and his freinds all agree..

    by emeraldboy

that he will do anything to get a laugh. there is in gervaise a vicious streak and people that work with have experienced it. its no joke, either. he can be borderline obnoxious.Merchants and gervaises editor on office and the extras got his face tapped up with sellotape. karl plikington remembered one day when gervais got him into a headlock a very tight one and he nearly passed out there was a very good program on channel 4 called new heroeos of comedy. The one about gervaise was superb, it was a very daring show. it did not pull any punches. there were no luvies attempting to kiss his ass. Chris rock was on it and he thought that Gervaise was doing too much and that he feared gervaise would be dead in decade from working to hard. the biggest compliment came from Billy connolly who went to see gervaise do stand up and he was blown away.
