Wanna Know When The Next SPIDER-MAN Movie(s?) Should Be Coming Our Way??

Published at:  May 23, 2008 8:57:50 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Further evidence the mighty Sony machine is lumbering into motion on another SPIDER-MAN film (or more).

This comes from IESB's recent interview with Marvel Vice Chairman Peter Cuneo.

Cuneo said the following, "As far as Spider-man 4, it's really up to Sony and it up to them, most likely scenario is 2010 or 2011

...says THIS ARTICLE at IESB, which goes on to discuss Sony's re-up payment to Marvel, and more.

Last week there was word that SPIDER-MAN 4 & 5 might shoot simultaneously. More details about this can be found HERE!

A SPIDEY release in 2010 or 2011 could drop it into the market with Marvel's intended IRON MAN sequel and/or their AVENGERS project.

will Marvel take control on it...

    by cifra

... and continue building the New Avengers instead of the much anticipated Ultimates? I'm thinking the movie might be recasting all main characters and that Raimi won't be coming back. I'd like seeing the Kraven story, plus Sandman back (the ONLY great thing in Spidey 3) and Dr. Connors finally becoming the Lizzard.

    Spidey 3 was great!

    by wormie1

I can't believe some people don't like Spidey 3. OK, there were too many characters and storylines crammed in, but it was still a much better film than Spidey 1. Compare the lame, lame, lame Goblin costume to the awesome-looking Sandman and Venom. Both those characters didn't have enough screentime to really develop, but they looked great, and their respective origin sequences were spectacular. I think the first film is overated. The sequels both had better stories, action and villains. Also, they had the advantage that we knew not to expect Maguire's Peter to be like the comics' Peter (post-Ditko anyway). Talking of which, yes, a recasting would be welcome for Spidey. I'm very happy with Jackman, Bale, Routh and Downey, but a less-nerdy Spidey would be nice.

    What's more interesting

    by eddieblake

What I find actually more interesting is that IESB also has an article on there about how Marvel Studios is not going to make any R rated movies, which is a mistake in my opinion. I think "Cloak & Dagger" and "Terror, Inc." and "Foolkiller" would be great movies for Marvel Studios to make and I think they would be best served as R rated. Not to say that none of their characters will be given R ratings, like the Blade and PUnisher movies. They said that if they are, they'll do them through another studio.

Better costumes does not equal better villains. It was extremely weak that they made Sandman Uncle Ben's killer. Why make the change to try and force a connection between the two?Venom, whether people like him or not, was just forced in there. That's been beaten to death."Bad" Pete was some of the most cringe-inducing moments in superhero film. Ghostrider type bad.Too much fucking crying. What the hell? The good - I really enjoyed the Harry vs. Pete fight in the apartment. Not sure how the story in 3 is better than 1.

    Just can't get excited

    by cdubbs727

When (not if) they decide to do a Spidey 4, I hope they'll do a creative overhaul. Raimi is great when he's allowed to experiment and I think we saw with Spidey 3 that he kind of has done all he can with that character. Bring in a new director and a new cast. They're changing the look and feel in comics all the time, so why can't we do that with movies?
Spidey 1 was a fun movie, but I think it is a tad overrated because the Green Goblin just was a weak villain for it--that end fight was just weak. Spidey 2 is a classic and the freshest of all. The third just is average; the fights are fun although the climax just feels like a rehash of what we've seen before. Too much crying and soap opera antics. And dancing emo Peter (now with kung fu grip) is painful to even remember.

    by franklin t marmoset

Spider-Man is fine and all, but he cannot fly. He is not sarcastic and yet charming. He will not at some point fall into alcoholism. Iron-Man is the future! Now, if they're going to do more sequels, I say it's about time they Schumacher the shit out of them. We've had a couple of good Spidey films, so how about some preposterously bad ones. I know most of you nerds hated part 3, but it wasn't Batman & Robin bad, which is what I want from a Spider-Man 3 and/or 4.It is time, I think, for Freddy Prinze Jnr to don the spidey suit. It is time for Lindsay Lohan to stand at his side as Mary Jane. And it is time that Jack Black played a villain of some sort. Also, they should redesign the costume. You know, to make it gayer...

Spidey 3 Is The Best One

    by masterbateman

I'm going to agree with the others who have already said it. All three of the movies pretty much suck for various reasons, but Spidey 3 is the only one that isn't BORING. Emo Peter really isn't that annoying to me (you all seem to like his fight with Harry), Sandman was a cool villain, and the Gwen Stacy stuff was cool. The only part that really truly pisses me off is some of the Mary Jane stuff and of course how Venom is forced in there. If they bring Venom back for the fourth one, then almost all will be redeemed and the end of Spidey 3 will make much more sense. I hate to say it but Spidey 2 is by far the worst. Doc Ock sucks as a villain and the whole movie suffers from piss poor pacing.

You beat me to it. Actually, the sequence with Pete defeating the symbiote in the belltower was almost shot for shot, from the comic, and as such, it makes perfect sense for Spidey to defeat Venom that way. A punk ass villain like Venom should have a punk ass weakness like sensitive ears. Also, re Spider Man 3: The film got a lot of things right, i.e. plot points, character motivations, "Evil" Pete being completely uncool... However, it was WAY too much to fit into one film, and everything suffered for the over-stuffing.

I'd rather watch Howard the Duck 100 times

    by zerocorpse

...Than watch Spider-Man 3 one more time. It was AWFUL. I felt INSULTED by it.
I'd go for Shia as Pete. They need to stop worrying so much about the whole ORIGIN STORY and start making films that start out with the hero already-established. Drop us in New York with Spider-Man fighting the Shocker. BAM. POW. JIBE! The Shocker gets beat, and Pete gets no respect and we start the story from there.
If Sony is hanging on to Spider-Man, and Marvel would still like to use him in their films, why not just change him around. The Marvel fans will forgive a change in order to get a more loyal Spider-Man on film. Make him the Scarlet Spider, or hell-- Never say his name. Use the original costume (black & red) or the black non-symbiote costume (which Sony didn't really use, actually. They made their own version.) Call him "The Spider" or just "SPIDER" and we'll get it, and deal with it, as fans. Stick him in a cameo in one of the other Marvel Studios flicks, and we'll love it. Especially if he has a sense of humor and Mephisto is nowhere to be found. Hell, make him a real teenager like in Ultimate... That would be fine, as long as he's got the look and the wit.

The reason why Spidey 3 sucked

    by toadkillerdog

Too many villains, too many storylines, too liitle regard for pacing, too little regard for the audience - I mean was it really necessary to rewrite the fiorst movies own history and have Sandman be uncle Bens killer? Why was that even remotely necessary? Terrible writing, terrible direction. Spidey 2 rocked. It was the character of Spiderman full on. The supporting characters came to life (yes we all agree Dunst was a terrible choice for MJ), and it felt like a Spiderman movie should feel. It had humor and just the right amount of pathos. Doc Ock was always implausible when it came to standing toe-to-toe with the power of Spiderman, but given that, Molina was sensational in the role. It was a truly great achievement in comic book adaptations to movies.

I agree, Spidey 2 is one of the best superhero movies ever.

    by knuckleduster

Here's something that really annoyed me about Spidey 3. In the comics, the symbiote comes from another dimension (I think. It's been a while). Granted, the Secret Wars (?) storyline is a bit much for a movie. Now, in the cartoon, Jameson's son (the astronaut) brought it back as a sample they found while in space. That was the perfect way to do it in the movie! They had already established Jameson's son coming back from Mars or wherever in the second movie. So why not do that? Instead, the fuckin thing just happens to crashland in the same park where Pete and MJ are. It's just one big coincidence? Lamo.

    by dougiefresh22

Main villian would be Kraven The Hunter....but there are several secondary villians as well, vulture, lizard, rhino, scorpion, maybe human fly. Have the story be that Kraven has tracked them all to New York and his hunt is causing chaos in the city, therefore , spiderman is not only having to fight against the several enemies, but agains Kraven who, once seeing spiderman in action realizes that spiderman would be his only true test to capture

    Carnage is shit

    by zerocorpse

Seriously, I wish the Gen-Y kiddies would stop fanwanking over Venom and Carnage. Those two characters are the worst examples of 90s comic book characters in existence. Cheap knockoffs of the T-1000 mixed with the tired old "evil clone" cliche.
Venom only RECENTLY became interesting in the comics, when they killed off Eddie Brock and let Mac Gargan (the Scorpion) become Venom. He's got more depth, pathos, and character than one-note Brock ever did.

This "I've got the weight of the world on my shoulders" thing only really works if it's balanced with some fucking humor. Oh, and hire another actress to play MJ. And make MJ less of a cunt in this on than in the last one. Maybe she'd stop mouthing off so much if she realized that Peter Parker can put his fist right through her skull.

    Said it before...

    by rakafraker

Spidey 3 was Avi Arad's fault for forcing the Venom point, not Raimi's (Remember: Raimi said that he would NEVER do Venom when he started the series). So many of you just don't understand how the process works when you make a movie that has so many different people that have a hand in the decision-making.
My biggest problems with SM have been Peter's lack of clever quips, just about every outfit sucked, MJ knowing who Pete really is by the 2nd movie, all the Venom-related parts of #3 (Knuckleduster, I hears ya!), and the other missed opportunities (Conner/Lizard, Jameson, Jameson Jr., etc)
The video game for SM3 was spectacularly better than the movie. At least it had many of the classic villians in it, with decent plotlines.
I hope that they film 4&5 together (like they should have done for 3). I don't care if it's recast (except for Jameson), I just hope that the can tie up the loose ends (Pete's landlord's daughter? WTF???). I also hope that Avi Arad doesn't poke his nose in any other Marvel franchises (which is kinda like saying I hope the world stops turning, I guess). AVI - I pray that the debacle you've forced on us has taught you a lesson! If a film-maker is successful in the first 2 movies of a franchise, don't threaten to pull the rug out if a certain character isn't shoe-horned into the 3rd movie at the 11th hour.

Right age, right build and believe it or not he can do drama as well a comedy. It's time for Peter Parker to grow out of that awkward phase, he's not a teenager anymore. Now bring on the Kingpin or throw in a little Scorpion. Just say he's the product of one of Tony Starks competitors. I'd say do what they did in Ultimate Spider-Man but that would take way too much exposition. And I'm still waiting to see that plotline continue. Disappointingly poor compared to 1 & 2, sure. But there have been worse. Remember the soap opera HULK movie? Or the awful made-for-TV CAPTAIN AMERICA flick? The new HULK? Marvel is deservedly making so much money off IRON MAN that even if HULK tanks, they'll still be laughing all the way to the bank.

Mistake of killing off the good villains..

    by wowsah156

Same mistake DC did in allowing the Joker to be killed off in the 89 Batman movie. Killing off Green Goblin AND Doc Oc has taken away good story potential, (sinister six anyone?!) The butterfingers of Avi Arad need to be kept away from any Marvel project. PS: Incredible Hulk will suck bad. The CGI isnt even near the standard of Ang Lee's movie.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I've been in Lee's defense for the longest. But the Hulk reboot has potentual, well atleast it will please the anti-Ang Hulk critics as it's less esoteric and no hulk dogs or plasma tv jellyfish either.

    Movies As Literal Comics....

    by rben

Here's what i don't get. Are we ever going to see movies of these superheros in glorius 2-D animation. It is very possible for a computer and animators to develop a movie that takes the drawings of Kirby, John Romita, Sterankco and others and animate it. If you remember the animation of Doug Wildey on the old Johnny Quest cartoon shows, very lush backgrounds, phone handsets held by the villians, etc. all having a photo realism to them. If people can add to the coffers of computer animation (ala Pixar), with funny animals, why not serious animation. i'm talking to you Marvel Studios! You may find all ages going to these more than you might think. then again, maybe Japan IS more enlightened than we are.

    by jtstyler

absolutely nothing to do with the making of these movies. I'm hearing some very silly ideas - Carnage: nobody cares; sinister six - too many villains; reboot - why, 1 and 2 were good, why not just tell new stories; crying about him not making jokes, this isn't the comic books, guys. Lastly some of you lot don't seem to realise that the unmaskings especially in 1 and 2 are essential, as we need to see his face as otherwise the scenes have no weight- may as well be a pixel. That's why although he shows Supes-level strength, the train stopping scene in Spidey 2 works so well - we can see just how much it hurt. Oh and lay off Raimi.I think new blood is a good idea but overall I doff my hat - good effort, sir. If you return, I will shed no tears. Get this clear, Spidey has always been about love troubles, money troubles and battling garish villains - always. So deal with it. And lastly, not so fast with the deification of Marvel Studios based solely on one good film,Iron Man, trust me this Avengers film is very ambitious but it is doomed to fail. Thor and Cap won't work, the latter especially will either come off as deeply silly or borderline offensive. We shall see,I may be wrong. Btw, Incredible Hulk has two fatal flaws - 1. 26-minute brawl between pixels: pointless 2. Norton can only play Norton, do you really think this man is Banner. 3. Liv Tyler. Unless the reviews are awesome, I'm saving my money for TDK.

    Get rid of the numbers

    by gozu

Here's the secret to a good sequel: don't make it a sequel. Just make it a self-contained story featuring the same character in a different setting and a different context. Fulfill or exceed expectations and maybe add something new. Rinse, repeat. Case in point: James Bond. There are even more examples in genre fiction (Horatio Hornblower, Sharpe, Bourne, etc.) Finally, keep it self-contained.

    by lettersoftransit

...and they'll think again. To read many of the posts here you'd think the Spider-man series was an unqualified disaster instead of a multi-billion dollar success. That a good cast was a bad one and that pretty women were actually pigs. Note to development teams: It ain't necessarily true to the comic just because a fanboy says it is. Just like it won't necessarily appeal to people outside the fanboy uni just because you ignore them. In the end you gotta have good instincts, or find someone who does. But it's not true that nobody knows anything. (yeah, I know Goldman said it; but it's still wrong) For writers that just a complaint they make hoping you'll leave them the hell alone. And for execs that's just an excuse made by the ones who know deep down they don't know what they're doing and don't want to have to compete against people who do.

I would assume that someone else has already mentioned this, but do any of you get the feeling that Marvel is laying the foundation for a massive post-Avengers crossover? We know that an Avengers film is in their plan, but is it also possible that they're laying the foundation for a "Secret Wars," "Civil War" or "Secret Invasion" to follow? Even though McGuire is getting older (and increasingly more expensive), he could likely pull-off one more movie. I just have the feeling that Marvel's strategy goes past 2011, and the organization's executuives are positioning the company for more innovative projects after the next 3 years...

    Golden Rule of superhero movies

    by oweny

MUST BE ONE VILLAIN PER MOVIE.

As proven by Spiderman 1 & 2, which had tightly focused storylines with time to develop villain and hero.

Part 3 sucked becuase of overcrowding, and with so many villains the audience wasnt given a chance to hate them properly or give a damn when they got defeated.

I dont care which villain is in Spidey 4, it could be Lizard, Electro, Mysterio, Carnage... Whatever. But PLEASE can it be just ONE VILLAIN this time?

Spidey has the best rogue's gallery!!!!

    by pum-spak

Some dude named cleric said Spidey's villains were lame. He has, hands down the best. Batman is 2nd. And to be clear, Spidey is not a geek. He is a nerd. Nerd's are smart. Geek's can be dork's. Dork's are not smart.

I hate when they shoot 2 movies at once.

    by ricardomontalkhan

It rarely works (with the exception of LOTRs). Each movie should be a lone work of art.
