Sony Getting Ready To Spin SPIDER-MAN 4 (and 5)??

A "trusty" source for Cinematical contacted them with some interesting news about forthcoming SPIDER-MAN films:
Apparently, in the last few weeks, James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has turned in a working draft of Spider-Man 4 to the studio. However, according to our source, "his story arc has encompassed two films, making Spider-Man 5 shootable at the same time. The studio saw dollar signs and is in the process of reworking his deal to snatch up the story arc."

Still no word on who'll direct, although Raimi hasn't completely discounted the notion & has a somewhat clearer slate now that Del Toro has been announced as director of THE HOBBIT films (Raimi was seen as a front runner for some time).

they MIGHT need some good word of mouth on the next one(s). I don't hang out with geeks in real life, so I've heard from the general public (my cooler than me friends) that they also hated 3. Hating on Spiderman 3 wasn't limited to only geeks, it hit the rest of the public pretty hard too. It opened well because Spiderman 2 was so good. So, with 4 and 5, Sony is gonna need to make sure the script is good, test screen the hell out of it and allow leaked reviews. Word of mouth is important for this one.

its all happened before, for a while it looks like people have got the hang of making good comic book films, original superman and batman films, then come the sequels upon sequels upon sequels until nobody cares anymore and then in about 10 years time we get Spiderman Returns with all new studio execs with new ideas and fresh talent.

Only Raimi can do this, the guy is shite. SM 2 was ok only, the first 1 and the 3rd were utterly terrible, I mean how do you mess up the Venom arc...Get Raimim and he will sort you out Sony.
They need to re start this franchise again a la Batman, and get it done right i.e. the Villains dont die at end of each movie, and Norman Osbourne does not become Green Goblin until movie 3 or 4. Oh and he doesnt look like a fucking Power Ranger either.

Use Kraven (and possibly another villain) in 4 and base the 5th on Kraven's Last Hunt and replace Vermin with Lizard. Foolproof.
Also it would work perfectly to have the fourth film start of with e.g. a gang of thugs pulling a heist and the Shocker as one of them. He's not good enough for his own film but good enough for a scene. -
Is that they should do a second three story arc and call it Trilogy 2.
The other idea I had was completely re-casting all the roles for the second trilogy. Start fresh with a whole new cast so you can save some money. Otherwise they'll invariably end up with a situation where one actor is looking too old and another drops out and needs to be re-cast yadda yadda yadda.
Still though, I'm all over new Spider-man movies. Spiderman rules. And there are tons of good stories they could still do - like Kraven's last hunt. And they can still kill Gwen Stacey off. They could bring venom back for a decent episode and bring in Carnage. Believe me, there's Lots of drama left to find in Spider-man. -
Where was playful, smart ass Peter Parker who annoyed those he fought with goofy puns even while unleashing a serious ass kicking? And Dunst was shite for that role from day one; Mary Jane is supposed to the uber hot girl next door. Dunst plays the role like she's stoned.

As a spidey fan I liked parts of 3 but will admit the venom parts were crappy and could have been done better as he is a cool villain.
Maybe a new director is a good choice or someone who likes the material. If back to back i'd love to see Aunt May finding out after some big scrap seeing petey all beat up and that he is spidey and at the end of the film embracing what he does and perhaps killing her off at the end.
Sinister 6 would be cool especially if avengers flick in the works.... but need to establish them probably first.
Lizard for me even Kraven I guess isnt too bad in the back ground hunting him down as a secondary story. Rhino / Electro - not sure if they could hold the film as the only badass more henchmen then main guys.
Get the king pin in there too. -

Cool to be Spiderman anymore. Hey sorry it made you a big star and now everyone knows you and you are set for 3 lives. Yeah it must be really tough to deal with. Fucking pussy. I think the first 3 making over $2 billion not including merchandise is reason enough. Seriously, if you don't think there's gonna be more Spider-man movies you just don't know what drives this industry (yes, "industry"). All we can do is hope they're good.

There is, but they made so many mistakes already, they really should just wait another 8 - 10 years and start again, with Chris Nolan as director once he has finished the Story arc on the far superior Batman series.
I doubt even if reviews are good I could go and see this at cinema, maybe if a completely different cast and director it might work, but better to start again IMO. Or else we just get bad villains that are worse than those coming before in increasingly cash seeking movies, that have no quality.
First 5 minutes should be Peter waking up from a dream where he looked like a dick (Toby Maguire) and nonoe of it has happened, then it does again, but properly this time.

This is the only property when they're casting too old. Energetic, funny, teen Spidey. Go Ultimate on this one. But even if they keep the continuity get a new director. These movies were interesting, but they weren't really fun.

I'm up for more dancing, absurd plot contrivances, pointless gimmicks, Bryce Dallas Howard, and story overstuffing. But if it's more slow moving pacifistic stuff that makes sense like those first two then count me out.

Spider-Man 2 wasn't fun?!? Eat cock and choke on it. Spidey 2 is probably the best superhero flick ever made (yeah, better than Superman The Movie, fuck that turning the world back bullshit). Spidey 3 is derailed by too many villains and the fact that everything relies on a a ridiculous amount of coincidence, but I blame that on Sony letting Raimi and his brother Ivan actually write the story, as opposed to the earlier films where Alvin Sargeant cobbled the scripts together from drafts turned in by, you know, actual writers. Nepotism sucks!

Sony has a "use it or lose it" deal with the Spider-man license. They have certain time frame to make another Spider-man sequel, and if they don't in a certain amount of time they lose the licenses and Marvel can renegotiate with who ever they want. And at this point, they'd just love to get there hands on it for there own "Marvel Studios." that's a coup sony is gonna fight against hard.

I was saying that back in the days of Spideys one and two, but back then people like Steve rogers ruled the roost and kept forcing "Best Superhero movies ever" down my throat. Listen, the problems have always been there but are coming to light: Spidey himself isn't funny or talky enough, the villains are light, and the films get way, way, WAY too bogged down the the Mary Jane love story. And I don't get the love for part 2. I think of part 2 and all I can remember about it was Peter sitting alone in his little apartment softly crying "Mary Jane." That's the whole movie as far as I'm concerned.

Take a clue from Iron Man, but put the witty banter in during the battles. I would love a good old fashioned crime story, too. Have him running around the city trying to stop some major crime from going down! You can have super-powered thugs like Shocker or Scorpion, but we don't need detailed origins of each. Spider-Man himself will draw the people in, so you can afford to do a better written, smaller scale story.

Come on thats just an over reaction to part 3. Part 3 is fine. Had the same humor and tone of the rest of the franchise. People who hated part 3 I truly wonder if you've seen 1 and 2. The "rain drops" scene is just as stupid as the dance scene in part 3.

So many things were bad...the dancing, the tacked on inclusion of Venom, horrible acting by Topher Grace, the 20-30 minutes that should have been edited out, weak script, etc. It still will never come close to the utter shitfest that was Batman and Robin. Worst movie ever.

Come on! It's Hollywood guys! Why leave it as a trilogy, it's not like these were three parts of one story and there a lot more tales to tell (and millions to make). OK, so part 3 stunk the cinema out; is that reason to never do another? No that's reason to do a great fourth part and get the series back on track! 1 and 2 were really as good as could be expected, in that they pretty much 'got' the whole Peter Parker thing, were pretty entertaining, with more or less excellent production values. We're kind of spoilt now with the superhero movies, in that we're used to high-class studio fare. When I was a kid I had the TV Spidey and TV Hulk, and was thrilled just seeing them on screen. I would have died from over-excitement if I could have seen the stuff we get served to us on a pretty regular basis now! That's not to say we shouldn't moan when the studios serve up turkey - Spiderman 3, FF 1 &2, Ghost Rider etc - but come on! I'm ready to love Spider-man 4, 5 and 6. Just make them good. Raimi should pass this time and Tobey is too old now (Parker should be a teen). New director and new cast, solid script , don't be greedy with the villains... and let's go!

To the extent that i can't feel excited for 4 and 5, even though i love the character. They fucked up the overal spidey story arc too much in 3, with trying to force venom into the already bloated storyline.
In my mind i'd always assumed they'd hold off on venom till films 4/5 so they could do a big ass venom story arc with him getting the symbiote in 4 but then venom not turning up properly till 5. 3 should have had sandman and hobgoblin, sandy should have been typical evil self, not sympathetic, we already have hobgoblin to be sympathetic with, we didn't need another smypathetic villian. -
Most comic book movies will always suck because the egos of Hollywood directors will always get in the way. They never stay true to the characters because they want to put their own personal stamp on the movie they are always focused on appealing to the masses. The result? A safe milktoast Spiderman who doesn't make a lot of snappy smart ass remarks while he's fighting and a lot of love and romance which slows down and detracts from the movie. You can blame the success of the titantic for that. Yea they should set the next Spiderman in space and he can swing around the planet at a supersonic speed and turn back time.

Did he not want to use a script that was completely disloyal to the source? He cares less about the material he's adapting then Tim Burton does when ever he gets his overrated hands on something that he didn't create. Before Spider-Man we didn't have shit. I was surprised as hell that his costume wasn't made of black rubber or some Matrix shit.

...let's see, a huge Internet meme right before the release of Spider-Man 3 was that the story ended with the origin of Venom "arced" into Spider-Man 4, where he would be the main villain, much to the delight and spooge of geeks everywhere. So if some clown is looking for a way to 1) create a false rumor that gets a lot of buzz and 2) fuck with people, why not just recycle a rumor from the pre-release discussion of the last film? I'll believe it when I see it. I have a hard time imagining any Spider-Man story "arcing" into anything.

Sure the first and the second films were great, adding a much needed layer of depth to Spider-man...but the third was HORRIBLE!

I'm not gonna bash what he's already given us, but we need new blood behind the camera. Raimi seemed positively bored with Spider-Man 3, so give another quality director a shot, and let Raimi get back to hopefully making a new film that he's passionate about again.

Is that females really liked it. And show they kept made them all movies that females would really enjoy. Plus since Kristen Dust is pretty plain/ugly looking most girls don't feel theatened by her. All other comic book movies cast actresses women don't like, and make the love story the least important part of the movie. I am pretty sure every Batman movie would've been just as good without any romantic entanglements. And women don't like Superman as much, because he isn't human like Peter Parker. Parker is the nerd guy all girls say they want to date, but date the douchebag instead.

All three Spiderman films have been seriously flawed and overrated.
Its time to let some real directors (non hacks) take a stab at this thing.
Raimi hasn't been talented since Darkman.
Simple Plan was the last okay film he made.
For the Love of the game and the gift are total crap. And the spiderman films haven't been nearly as innovative as what he did with his evil dead series and for less money.
Its time he passed the baton over to directors who are still talented and working at the top of their game. Black Book was an incredible return to Verhoeven's Dutch roots and the Hughes Brothers direction of From Hell was brilliant filmmaking.
Why not try something different and give one of Marvel's greatest comic book characters the shot in the arm he truly deserves? -
Sandman and the Goblin would have been a great film. But the studio just had to have Venom in there too for the toy biz. That's what overloaded and bloated SM3.

But Carnage in a feature length movie? That is monstrously stupid. The true product of symbiote overuse and over hype that told Marvel whoever has one will sell money. All he needed was an adamantium skeleton.

Raimi, Koepp, Maguire and Dunst totally fucked up those movies. I don't care how many people love those goddamn things - they weren't Spider-Man movies, they were teen angst movies populated with 20-30-year-old actors playing characters who never moved beyond high school emotionally. It was a series of cry-baby break-up movies, featuring occasional cameos by a superhero and some supervillains. Apart from the sequence in the first film where Parker's learning to use his powers, these movies were not fun at all. And Maguire is a wet fucking rag of an actor, with only two facial expressions, who never once projects the personality or wit that the character possesses in the comics. I know that's partly Koepp's fault, but it's the actor's job to inject life into part, whether it's written well or written badly, and Tobey couldn't even do that. He was NOT Peter Parker OR Spider-Man. And, Dunst was not Mary Jane.

...all we have to do is pretend that Spidey 3 never existed. Making films, especially action films, is a huge job. Every so often a film ends up a failure, which is what we had with Spidey 3.
If this proposed arc for two more films is solid; it can wipe out the bad taste of the last film. These things take over a year between signing up actors and directors, shooting and post-production; by the time Spidey 4 is done it might be 3 or 4 years since the last one. So, by the time it comes out, it will have been so long between films it will feel like a reboot.
The key to making it good will be to either keep Sam Raimi or (if they do replace him) go up the ladder and get somebody who is equally talented or more accomplished in action films. Directors who might be able to pull it off: Martin Campbell (Golden Eye and Casino Royale are great Bond films), Paul Greengrass can do action well (Sony would just have to go on set ahead of him and bolt all his cameras down), Ridley Scott would make a great Spiderman film (it'll never happen, but we can dream), John McTiernan in his heyday would've been able to make a great Spidey film (but stuff like The 13th Warrior and Rollerball kind of disqualify him.)
Finally the casting is big part of whether it succeeds or not. If they don't manage (or maybe even want) to bring Tobey back, they would be wise not to go the "Brandon Routh Unknown Route", that didn't help make "Superman and the Continental Lift Workout" any kind of success. This would also be a great time to go ahead recast Mary Jane Watson, becuase despite what Dunst thinks the franchise can get along just fine without her. -
...was really fucking awful, unless you like bad song and dance numbers. It was Spiderman the musical. I mean what was Raimi thinking having Tobey dance around like that? Was it supposed to be funny? It made me cringe. He looked so fucking awkward with the greased hair and eyeliner. Other things like including sandman in uncle ben's death was ridiculous. To many bad points to mention them all. I liked the 1st although I hated what they did with the green goblin. I liked the 2nd but hate the totally unoriginal formula of introducing the villain and killing them off in the same movie, like everyone's been doing since Tim Burton's Batman. The third was just a turd, plain and simple. At this point it needs a reboot. Call it Amazing Spiderman or something and get all new people. But since they are calling it Spiderman 4 and 5 I guess they are picking up where that piece of shit left off.

Since they decided to give Peter organic webbing there was nothing new there either. And that was a flaw that came from the very start. Honestly did it even enhance Peter's strength? Other then the very power rangers feel of the SM Suit and Green Goblin Suit, SM 1 and 2 were pretty damn good movies. SM 3 could have been great. However, it's not Raimi's fault, he was FORCED to use the villians that were used. He was unhappy with what the 'studio' wanted. Raimi was wanting to head in a more Sinister 6 direction with the 3rd installment and was complete cack blacked. So say what you will about the EMO wannabe in SM 3, but don't put the blame on Raimi.
A huge problem with the trilogy as has been stated here already was McGuire and Dunst. Tobey and Dunst played Tobey and Dunst for all three movies, with absolutely no character development from the two of them at all.
Topher Grace would have been a better SM, and almost anyone with blondish to red hair would have made a more convincing MJ then snaggle toothed Dunst.

The idea that I'd go see a film where Indy's character is present in a fracking supporting role is just insane. Ford should do new and interesting projects and so should Lucas, goddamn it.

(Some of) You say "the studio" forced him to use Venom in order to sell toys; personally, I don't believe this. I've read the interviews where it's been implied that Avi Arad coaxed him into using Venom, but I don't think anybody "forced" him to do anything. I just don't think he knew what he wanted to do with the story and was glad to be freed from the responsibility of choice. What's more, there was always going to be a third villain anyway, it was just originally going to be the Vulture instead (Ben Kingsley read for the part and everything)... which probably would have been even worse. Either way, regardless of who's call it ultimately was to use Venom, is "the studio" responsible for the awful montage of Peter gyrating down the street and telling his neighbor to go bake him cookies? Were they responsible for the THREE dance numbers, including the insta-"classic" Revenge Jazz Dance? I'm a fan of Raimi's in general and Spider-Man 2 ranks as one of the greatest superhero movies of all time (for me), but you can blame all the suits you want; Raimi managed to ruin Spider-Man 3 all by himself, probably due to burnout, fatigue, whatever you want to call it. I don't think he should direct another entry in the series, nor do I think he wants to.

I see no reason to keep the other prima donnas on; They'll just ruin it with their input. I'd much rather see Spider-Man played by unknowns with some decent acting chops.
Of course, that won't happen either. This is Sony Pictures, and they HAVE TO have a big name attached because they don't think it will sell without one.

The Raimi films were decent if overrated, but they're only one interpretation of Spidey. I didn't mind the Revenge dance and all that. It felt very Silver Age. But I agree that we need new blood. Along with the new writer, a new director, new leads, new tone. I wish they could do a younger, Ultimate version and bring the story in line with what they're doing over at Marvel Studios with the supersoldier stuff. But that won't happen. But yeah, less cry baby emo stuff. Give us a good smart ass Spidey with an actor who can balance the comedy and the serious, one who can joke to cover up the pain, even though we can still see the pain. That delicate balance is so difficult.

Right on. Everything you said is true. However, Raimi didn't even come close to raping my childhood in the brutally boring way that George Lucas did with the prequals. He came up from behind my childhood real slow and stupid, like a raping mongaloid. I would love to start trashing on Lucas right now, I HATE HIS FAT NECK GUTS (and you can only truly hate someone that you once loved), but instead I will stay on topic, and I will trash on Raimi- whom I don't hate as much. Sam Raimi has too many cobwebs in his head or something- his movies are like messy bedrooms. Hollywood. please stop making Spider-Man movies much the same way you stopped making Batman movies after your trainwreck "Batman and Robin" (I know that you didn't go that far this time, but the franchise is still young)- then wait for several years, and give us a nice juicy reboot like Christopher Nolan did. I admit that Batman Begins is still not perfect (it's not quite as good as Iron Man perhaps), but it is truly a breath of pine fresh air. Long live intelligent reimaginings. And while you're at it, please start the reimagining process for Fantastic Four. I want to see a real Galactus some day, not a cloud particle fountain. Time for Jon Favreau to start making the calls on these Marvel movies, he seems to have a brain, a good one. After the debacle that was SPIDER-MAN 3, they need to replace Sam Raimi. #1 was okay, #2 was terrific, but #3 sucked like a Hoover vaccuum. This franchise needs some fresh blood, and they need to start at the top with a new director. And it wouldn't hurt to dump the soap-opera-ish crap with Mary Jane. Just turn this back into a balls-to-the-wall superhero franchise.

I'm actually glad Del Toro has taken over THE HOBBIT. I've seen some weaknesses in SPIDER MAN that I never saw with Raimi before. If there's anything that'll be on an even bigger stage than SPIDER MAN it's THE HOBBIT. And that worried me. Del Toro has been a solid director in everything he's done. Small films to big films. Even MIMIC regardless of the studio interference had its moments. Something that's never been a problem with Raimi before has been dialog. A good part of the dialog in SPIDER MAN is horrible. Most of the actors look and feel uncomfortable with their lines. That's George Lucasitis in a nutshell. Dialog seems to be one of Guillermo Del Toro's stronger points. That, a strong sense of visual style and being able to get the most out of his actors regardless of if they're one of his regulars or not. That said, I think Raimi is more suited for the smaller stage. There's no one better than him making small hitchcock type thrillers or small geek-ridden genre films.

I would love to see one of you talkbackers make a film a tenth as good as what Lucas did with THX-1138, American Graffiti and Star Wars A New Hope. He produced and created two of the most successful film trilogy franchises in film history (Star Wars and Indiana Jones), his THX sound company has become an industry standard as well as his effects houses. He has helped get made some amazing films like Coppola's brilliant Tucker and Schrader's fascinating Mishima. Stop the hate and accept the fact that Lucas owns all your asses any day of the week. I'm getting sick and tired of people on these boards constantly going after Lucas and stroking themselves over Spielberg. Make no mistake Lucas is a pioneer and a giant in this industry and he has paved the way for many people to be successful in this industry. He is also one of the most generous people to his production teams and crews. I can understand people being upset with the last three star wars prequels but lets put that in perspective for a moment. The guy took an sixteen year or so hiatus from directing movies. Cut him some slack. For not being behind a camera for so long he didn't do that bad a job. Directing a movie isn't like riding a bike. Look at Oliver Stone for example. Amazing director. But when he took about six years off after making AGS his movies got progressively worse. As fans of cinema we should encourage someone like Lucas not hate on him. He is given us film geeks too much and has influenced the industry in ways that few of us can comprehend. My hope is that Lucas will have the courage to make the art films he had talked about for so long. I think Lucas has another remarkable film project in him and I think we should support him so that he we will take the risk he has wanted to for so long.

YOU ARE CORRECT SIR!!!! There has been a lot of negativity aimed at George Lucas recently, and I don't think that any of it is warranted in any way. Nobody's perfect, and I don't think that Lucas is either. But this guy has done more for modern cinema than anyone I can think of. Lay off the guy. Head to the theaters, sit back and enjoy the ride. The sense of wonder that Lucas has put back into films in general is more than rweason enough to lay off the guy. If you can't think of any other reason, then think of that.

Ok, I'm not going start hating on Raimi completely just because of part 3. Here's my thoughts:
- Spidey 1 was ok, but I appreciated it a lot more due to Spidey 2
- Spiderman 2 IS one of the BEST THREE superhero movies ever made. The other two are the first Superman with Christopher Reeves (not the Bryan Singer debacle) and Nolan's Batman Begins. You have to give credit to Raimi for that.
- Spiderman's costume is one of the BEST movie costumes ever made for a movie. The other two are Iron Man (yes, I know a lot of it was CG), and Superman (Original). Nolan's batsuit is pretty good, but it's still not close to the comicbooks.
- Tobey Mcguire is still great as Peter Parker/Spiderman ... he has the geekiness down pat! Less crying though please ... more of a script/director gripe.
- Dunst ... ok, never really saw her as the ideal MJ (not hot enough), but I did warm up to her since she is a decent actress. Plus, I can see how Raimi would see her as being a more realistic fit due to Tobey looks and personality. In part 3, she was a whiny bitch and I wanted to smack her ... may be more of a script/director gripe. Though I'm ALL FOR a better looking "actress."
- Part 2. A BIG part of the reason why part 2 was good was the writing. People always forget about the writers.

Batman Begins was an AMAZING Batman film that didn't do too well at the box office. Why didn't it do very well? Because Batman & Robin and Batman Forever were completely horrible. However, if you want to bring back the landlord and his daughter, since they're obviously supposed to be Russian, make them Kraven the Hunter's estranged brother and niece, respectively. It'd get Kraven right in Peter Parker's face in that "Oh my god, my archenemy is having lunch right next door with my landlord and that nice girl who brings me cake and milk"-sort of thing that always seems to work with Spider-Man.

It should have been two movies. One dealing with Sandman and Goblin, while introducing Brock and the symbiote.
It should then have ended with Brock becoming Venom.
Then the next movie should have been about Peter trying to make amends for everything he did while under the influence of the symbiote, as Eddie, now as Venom, sets about tormenting Peter.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out how it should have been done...heck, the animated series did a pretty good job of it...but big Hollywood writers and directors couldn't manage it. -

All the problems, well most of them, in SM 3 had to do with Venom, worthy of his own movie and he was shoe horned in. They should close the chapter on the Goblin story arc in the third one, which they did, and then do a similar thing with Venom in 4 and 5 (and possibly 6 to complete the trilogy). Too bad, this could have been a great series, but was fucked up by greed.

Yes! Best news of the YEAR!! I'm am soooo glad that the guys have sorted this one out! Spiderman is, like, my best ever movie (i've only since part 3 on DVD last year and I LOVED it!). Think Spidey 4 should concentrate on some of the other characters:- Casting suggestions: Spidey- Tobey (ofcourse) MJ - Kirsten (ofcourse) Lex - Dan Shanks Aunty May - one of the Golden Girls Carnage - David Prowse. What does everyone else think?

Yeah, SM3 had a bloated mess of a storyline and seemed tonally out of place in the series, but cut Raimi some slack. Fans of the character shouldn't be so quick to forget where the property stood before Raimi came on board; the better of Cameron's two scripts was still terrible and out of character, with Peter dropping F-Bombs and banging Mary Jane on top of the Brooklyn Bridge. Not to mention Cameron completely fabricated the villain(s )by shoddily combining Kingpin, Electro and Sandman. And before that there were scripts in development that resembled the character even less; I recall reading about a proposed Spider-man movie that had Peter Parker as a One Hour Photo employee at Eckerd's that literally transformed into a giant, rabid spider. So before you go crucifying Raimi for including a silly jazz sequence in one of the movies, try to think of how bad things could have been. Raimi made a series of light films with character and heart: which is exactly faithful to the source material. Personally I got a kick out of seeing Raimi have some fun with the third film, he earned as much after building a franchise that made Sony over a billion dollars and that put comic book films back on the map.

I'm sick of everyone involved. The best part of Spider Man 3 was easily James Franco and he got killed off (probably why he was so loose and fun - HE WAS FREE!) I'd like to see a "Spider Man" movie that's 90 minutes long, straight action, directed by Neil Marshall, who right now stands heads and shoulders above pretty much every other fucking action director out there. Granted his competition is Paul W.S. Anderson, James Wan, Michael Bay, Len Weisman, Brett Ratner, and some anonymous French commercial directors.

I have been hating on Lucas in my posts here, but without a doubt I consider the first three Star Wars movies not just ground breaking, but just about the very best creations ever made, as far as I am concerned. Empire Strikes Back is the best thing ever made. That being said, George Lucas was indeed a wunderkind, he was the forerunner of anything terrific being done in movies since, he deserves great laurels. But that George Lucas slowly died away during his Hiatus I guess. What is left is a horribly dissapointing shell of a genius. That shell is going around still doing stuff, and tragically all in his younger selfs good name. I don't hate young George Lucas, I love him. I hate what he has become, or whatever Linda Ronstetd did to him that bitch.

were the dance number and those kids saying "cooooool". That hurt. I'm not against the dance number in theory I just thought it was handled poorly and seemed like it came out of different movie right down to the look of the cinematography which looked tacky. Everything else was perfectly okay, and basically in line with the first 2, if not exceptional. And I thought Sandman was done beautifully.

If Raimi and co. didn't shit on the Venom storyline.
Part 4:
- Introduce black costume ... not some damn random meteorite. A real lack of imagination here. They could've used the 90's cartoon storyline with the spaceshuttle and developed more on the Jameson's son storyline ... Parker did take "his" girl.
- Spiderman in the comic-book version of the black costume with actual powers enhancement. C'mon, other than being a complete goober and terrible dancer, was there any real difference shown? Ok, he jumped really far once ... f-ing wow. How about it changing into real-looking clothes? Enhanced spidey-sense, strength, and agility? Webshooters w/o webshooters ... yeah, Raimi kinda screwed that part up.
- The black costume (Secret Wars version) was never evil. It had a mind of its own and felt scorned when Parker forced it off his body. Would've been cool to have explored this aspect. I don't remember it ever changing his personality either in the original Web of Spiderman story.
- Black Cat introduced into storyline to add tension with the MJ relationship.
- Villains: Sandman and Rhino.
- Develop Brock character.
- Spidey discovers that the costume is sentient and gets it off of him. It goes on Brock.
Part 5: Spidey goes up against Venom.
Part 6: Secret Wars? Yeah, it's backwards. Hey the Avengers movie would've been out by then right? It'll never happen due to licensing, but take X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Spiderman ... fanboy dream ...

And it's a great story if properly handled. Hell, even the cartoon did a better job than the movie. But the old school McFarlane Venom was actually a force to be reckoned with. Also, the mid to late 80s weren't a crap era in comics at all. Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Chris Claremont, and John Byrne were all at their peak. For the first time comics were actually taken seriously. And even in the 90s, there was Bone, Strangers in Paradise, and Sin City. There's always been good comics, even in so called "crap eras."

In all honesty, as much negative reaction it got in McFarlane's comic, I would love to see spiderman's 'night of hell' at the hands of the Lizard mindlessly hunting him under Kraven's control. I'd love to see a terrified, broken, beaten spiderman fleeing for his life while trying to figure out wtf is going on.

Spider-Hulk was the beginning of ret-conning in comics. There was never any plan for Venom. They just made it up as they went along.

Each of the movies has seemed fairly episodic to me, with the continuity elements (such as Peter's struggles with both Mary Jane and Harry and the death of uncle Ben) apparently "made up" as the stories progressed. There doesn't appear to be any sort of over-arching theme to these movies or a clear direction in which they're heading. This may have worked well for the "Indiana Jones" and "James Bond" franchises, but that is in large measure due to the fact that they didn't approach each film as a continuation of the series, but rather as self-contained plotlines. There needs to be more clear and cohesive story elements between the films to make a series work, and what has already been written and filmed should be honored (ala Ben's death and carjacking).

There is a bounty of original material out there to be sown and eventually reaped, especially within the domain of comics and graphic novels. The world of "Spider-Man" should be left fallow for a period of time, until the ground is once again fertile for a fresh batch of crop.

Raimi says on the SM-3 commentary track that when Hayden Church signed on to play Sandman, it was Vulture who was set to be a primary villain in the movie. He said they were even deep in talks with Ben Kingsley to play the part. If memory serves (I could be wrong) the premise was Flint Marko and Vulture meeting in prison and teaming up to take Spidey down. And I think the central theme was supposed to be something about Spidey handling his celebrity status and the backlash of NYC or some-such. Then right before pre-production Avi Arad insisted on Venom, and the script was re-written to revolve around the "duality of the black suit" idea. Too bad.

Lets be fair and wait and see what he does as a director with non star wars material before saying his talent is completely gone.
My top ten projects I would like to see from George Lucas as a director/producer:

5. a live action version of the anime/manga Berserk - produced by Lucas with Paul Verhoeven directing
6. X Minus One - 1950's science fiction radio that Lucas could direct all the episodes for on HBO maybe? i would like to see him direct it animated though
7. Mark Clifton's short story Star Bright - I think Lucas would do wonders with this story as a director with a script/adaptation by Christopher Nolan and his brother
8. Sodom And Gomorrah - controversial bible movie - big box office
9. Dean Koontz's Oddkins - Lucas should produce with Michael Mann directing a Chuck Russell script/adaptation
10. I would like to see Lucas bring back animated short films before movies like they had in the 40's and 50's...In the vein of what they did with Roger Rabbit but taking it even further and more adult -

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Let a new director and cast take over. Break up Spidey and MJ for a while let him play the field some, bring in Gwen, and Black cat, and have MJ not like it worth a damn. Its called dramatic tension. Put a new kid in as Spidey, make this one the more modern version, constantly talking shit with the big eyes on the mask ala Erik Larson, and a tighter web design. I'd go see it. I didn't care much for Spidey 3 either, but I could stomach it down if they follow it up ok. Personally (since they already shat all over continuity anyway,) I thought that they could bring a good version of venom back by letting Gwen Stacy get a little bit of the "stain of topher-venom" that was on the building at the end, and then maybe she could come back as a really bug-nuts version of what Venom maybe should've been back. Plus, she'd sorta have the whole "woman scorned" thing going on too. But that's just my dream. Actually, I'd like to see a David Fincher Spiderman. How about the skinny kid from SUPERBAD and JUNO as Peter Parker??

BUT, he caved in due to pressure from Avi Arad and Sony ... spineless mutha. The costume looked horrible without the white spider symbol and eyes/webshooters. Ragardless, the Sandman/Uncle Ben tie-in made no sense, and he ended up becoming just another 2D villain. Sandman, fleshed out would've been great. I rather liked the Harry/Parker storyline and fight, though Harry's costume was crap. With all that money, they could've at least tried to make it look more like the comicbook.

Cast Wes Bentley and Alicia Witt as the leads. Make it an adult storyline with two mature characters trying to make a marriage work while Peter is split between his marriage and his role as Spiderman. Show how a REAL couple deals with stress in their relationship against a fun, sexy storyline featuring maybe Black Cat as the villain. I'd go see that.

Peter is only a dork. He's ONLY a misfit. Since the character is only defined in those terms, every movie story revolves around that. He's not particularly smart or witty in the movies, but in the comics he's such a more well-rounded character. I just don't see how they could add any depth to the character now. They can load up the entire Sinister 6 in the movie and it'd be fine so long as they give Peter more depth than just "I'm a dork." and "I love Mary Jane."

I have enjoyed the Spiderman films so far, 3 wasn't great but it was not as bad as Batman & Robin. We should feel lucky that the series is stil raking in the cash and that they are planning more films. This is the perfect oppurtunity for the series to go in a new direction. New cast, new director. Not a reboot though. Keep the three filmns as loose backstory and move onto different issues n the Spiderman universe, new villians. It isn't likley Sam and Tobey will come back they will probably move on and this creates a situation where the films can take on the idea of Superman Returns, previous films are loose cannon and we move on in cast, etc...

At the end of the day it all depends on the script and what direction the studio wants to go with the character. I think hopewell1's idea above with Bentley was appropriate casting for that material. Depends on the material. I think Gyllenhal is fine if they are going to stay on the track they have started with Raimi (which I haven't liked at all). But if they want to do what Nolan did they need to make a bold choice and go with an unknown or an actor who isn't overexposed right now.

I dont think that they have to completely reboot and forget that anything happened in the first 3, but a change of actors, director, etc would breath some fresh air into this franchise. It definately needs a new spin to revive interest after SM3. If they only make this about rolling out a new SM just to make some more $ than it will hurt the studios in the long run.

You're right. Batman and Robin was much worst than Spiderman 3. Did everyone forget the rubber nipples, batbutt, neon lights, horrible one-liners, and Mr. Freezenegger? Yes, I'm trying to forget too. I think the expectation was much higher for S3, than B&R. Batman Forever is ok, but it was never great. Batman Returns was the best of the Burton incarnations.
Yeah, get a new director/new cast, but keep the last 3 movies as a loose backstory. There's no point in reshowing his origin, Doc Ock, and the Goblin. Keep Jameson ... he is note perfect. -

I have been consistently against Raimi's franchise since 2002 when I found the first one disappointing. Yeah, I've changed TB handles a couple of times since, but I had this opinion back when it was unpopular. As far as I'm concerned, part 3 was the miracle that caused the scales to fall from the eyes of my fellow geeks. I didn't jump on the bandwagon. the bandwagon jumped on ME! (I think.)

The real reason spiderman 3 sucked wasn't totally because of lame dance numbers it was because Raimi killed spiderman's motivation.
By making sandman uncle ben's killer, spiderman's reason for becoming a hero is gone. Why go out and fight crime if secretly everybody has a sympathetic motivation?

Spiderman 1 was good because they nailed everything accept the green goblin's costume and spidey's witty banter. How great was the building on fire scene and then the villain and the hero sitting at the table? it was classic.
Spiderman 2 was on the same level for the same reasons and it had a better costume for the villian.
Spiderman 3 just needed to use the same formula, pick a kick ass villain (hobgoblin to prove you can do it right) and then improve on a single problem with the last movie. they just dropped the ball and fucked it up.

I like Venom in the comics because of the way he tries to mindfuck Peter. With that, I've always felt that he was brought on way too early. Spiderman has a plethora of great classic villains to play with, without needing to add that one to the mix in the first 3 movies. Even if some of the fans wanted Venom for S3 (not me), it wasn't an excuse to shit on the character and on the movie. Take away Venom, and the movie would've been much better, but it would've still been flawed.

Remember in the Golden age of comics there was an actual rule/law that said that the villain had to be punished for his wrongdoings at the end of every story? That's a rule they made up when they were trying to do away with the horror comics at the time.

In terms of story, "Secret Wars" was nothing special (although I love Mike Zeck's art). However, in terms of impact, it was huge. It was a total merchandising ploy (the comic was meant to sell action figures) but again, it brought comics even more into the mainstream.

I'm sick of Peter the looser, Peter the outcast, Peter the lonely. Goddamn it, I want the Peter I grew up with. Yeah, he still had problems, but he didn't mope around all the friggin time either. I want a Spiderman that focuses on Spiderman, less Peter for a couple flicks. I love MJ in the comics, but we've never seen her on film yet, a brash, beatiful, willfull young woman. She was always Pete's oposite. Raimi and Dunst made her a hamfisted female version of Peter. And a piss poor semireplica of Gwen. What were they thinking? I don't car if its a reboot, but I want the characters to change, to mature, to get away from the pure Highschool angst, but I'm not ready for the married angst either, let them be in thier 20's and live a little. Hell the trauma of Harry's death could be used to explain the break up. That and MJ's gotta be tired of getting fuckin' kidnapped.

The whole darkness angle never really worked. I think they should go with something a little more zippy. It's more fitting for the character. As of right now, the perfect guy who could take the character in that direction...Justin Long. He's funny, he looks the right age, and I think he could pull the character out of that awkard teenager phase that he's way too old for. You don't need to be an outcast to have problems.

I like that they've gone with a new writer, but I agree with the others who've posted that it's time for some new blood in the directors chair. The Harry Potter franchise has proven that you can rotate directors and still produce quality films. You've just got to find somebody whose capable with a passion and respect for the source material.
They should recasts the leads as well. I'm tired of Dunst and have a feeling Maguire would demand too much to come back for a 4th. -

lets just forget we saw eddie brock get vaporized. the movie opens up showing the final battle from another angle. brock gets blown off the building by the explosion instead. cut to a few weeks later and spidey fights the shocker. no exposition, just a villian who comes out of nowhere. spidey wins easily. brock seeks out the alien sample in connors lab, as he has a psychic connection to it(connors has been experimenting on for his own purposes, we see him using it and lizard dna to regenerate the tail on a mouse or something when brock busts down the door and knosks conors out) and viola brock becomes venom again. cut to peter proposing to mj and she says no.... she's too upset about harry dying still. aunt may gets sick and is in the hospital. life pretty much sucks again. brock shows up and follows pete. teases him, slaps him around a bit just to fuck with him. meanwhile we find out that, like in the comics norman osborn has returned to life... granted regenerative abilities from his "super soldier" serum. (the scene is a hooded figure picking up a newspaper, reading of his son's death. "spider-man must die." or something like that.... and a zoom in on normans eyes. (to be continued in spidey 5) radio reports that there is a serial killer on the loose and mj tell pete she thinks she is being followed. spidey and venom have a nasty battle... spidey wins. barely. spidey lures venom back to the church and using the bell of the church spidey seperates brock from the costume and beats him to a pulp. the costume tries to bond with peter again. he rejects it... but it nearly costs him his life. alien slithers away, brock is arrested. mj still on the outs with peter, and aunt may still in the hospital. final scene is connors looking at his stump and then staring at a vial of serum. "its time." role credits

Anyway, Jake's probably too buff and not nerdy enough to play Peter Parker. But that was the rumor back then, now he's probably too big of an actor to do it. movie opens with norman osborn confronting a serial killer just finishing up his work. "i have a proposition for you." while at the hospital visiting aunt may peter gets a frantic call from mj... serial killer cletus cassidy has broken into her apartment and she is desperatly fighting to survive. pete tries to web swing back to help her only to be attacked by norman along the way. "you cant save your girlfriend this time.... my errend boy is seeing to that, her life for my son's spider-man!" pete manages to get the upperhand and escape. he arrives just in time to lay the smack down on cassidy.... sparing his life, he drops him off at the police station. giftwrapped. since mj wants her space, peter starts dating gwen again... peter recieves a phone call from connors, and when he goes to see him a miracle has happened. the doc has a brand new arm (and thats all till part 6). the final battle from part 1 happens again. only this time... gwen is the hostage... and peter cant save her. "i will kill everyone you love, you should have made sure i was dead!" and this time, peter makes sure the goblin wont be coming back. aunt may gets out of the hospital. mj calls peter and wants to talk. they meet, and mj accepts his proposal, but peter is still visibly shaken up over gwen. cut to cletus in the cell next to brock's. brock is more than a little disturbed by his freakish new neighbor, who is cutting himself. the symbiote finds eddie again... venom escapes leaving a little something behind. the new symbiote bonds with cletus (we get just a tease as it goes directly into his open wound and his eyes go red.) connors transforms into the lizard. roll credits.

part 6 would be the wedding/ venom and carnage finale. no lizard... just "reports" of sightings, i would save the lizard and kraven for part 7 (do the death storyline with lizard instead of vermin) i know, lots of teasing.... but i think that would be a huge payoff instead of rushing the whole process (see spider-man 3) keep it simple i say, and split the exposition up between the movies... so it doesnt feel forced. cliffhangers make you want to know what happens next.... i would make every film end like empire strikes back... with part 6 being the end of the whole story arc, and the beginning of the kraven/lizard one.

But when you say that "it's ok, he's not black." that argument is supposed to go the other way around- You seem to think that because Wright is Black, anything he says is ok. People go to church to receive truth, if Obama received what he thinks is truth from this guy for 20 years, then that tells me volumes. what they should have done is rather than do him in CGI, cast a short as hell stuntman/roided out bodybuilder. like 5'4 260 lbs. then do what they did in LOTR. build sets and props at 1/2 scale and full scale and composite the shots. use in-camera tricks so a 5'4 man becomes a ten foot tall giant. give him prosthetics for his face and digitally change his skin eye and hair color. use CGI only for the transformation and those "impossible shots." it would be low tech, but far more convincing than another shrek/hulk. just film the guy in the 1/2 scale environment and put normal sized things in the foreground. they did it convincingly in LOTR. why not here?

Personally, I found the 90's era of Spiderman to be great...up until the Clone Saga ruined everything and made me stop reading, but Venom, Carnage, Hobgoblin, even Demogoblin were all awesome villians. It's sad to see people hate them and wish that the comics stayed with the lame 70's villians. How can anyone look at the Vulture and not think he's the lamest designed villian ever?
That said, Raimi should have just left Venom out of SM3 if he was going to ruin the character like that. I think he killed the character off to purposely spite the fans of the 90's characters. -

I kinda enjoy them at the theater 1 time but when I put a Spider_man movie in at home I wind up jumping to an action scene or two then putting something else in because there's no real "cool factor" in any of the Spidey films. They are slow and kinda whiny. It's hard to watch Tobey McGuire or Kirsten Dunst for more than 5 minutes at a time.

SPIDER-MAN was okay. There were things in it-like the Goblin suit-that were pretty lame. With SPIDER-MAN 2, the filmmakers hit their stride, it was awesome. But #3 was an overloaded piece of junk. A lot has been made about them deciding to put Venom into the film to appease the fans, but they shouldn't have done it. For one reason, Spidey has plenty of other villains that have been around a lot longer who would have been much better. Secondly, I think the only fans that they appease in any way were some 12-year-olds who don't really know much about SSpider-Man in the first place. Third, and most importantly, why didn't they learn from the BATMAN debacles that overloading the films with villains just detracts from the entire thing in the long run. If they had focused just on the Sandman, I think I might have been more satisfied. It just felt like they were trying to shoehorn too much stuff into the film. If all involved were planning on #3 being their swan-song, then they should have concentrated more on making a good movie.

I always pictured part 3 being two movies, just because of the size of the cast and character development.. one of the problems with part 3 was that the story was being forced down our throats...O well, moving on now, this is a good chance to make something special..The best of luck to these guys, and yea I agree with having new blood from the bottom up in this movie, loooovveedddd Raimi, but I would like to see somebody else's take on Spiderman. I mean c'mon he's not the only talented fan.

The more that I think about it, the more I think that not only do they need to find someone other than Sam Raimi to direct the next SPIDEY pic, but it wouldn't be such a bad idea to recast the film as well. Tobey Maguire made such a buffoon out of himself in #3 that I'm not so sure that he could redeem himself. It was almost like he was sleepwalking through the role-Hell, I felt that way about most of the cast except for James Franco. It would probably be best for the franchise if they went for w fresh approach-new director, new cast. And for Christ's sake, get a decent composer for the score. One of the sore points for me about the entire series has been the lackluster music.

We remember comics as "runs". Like Miller's Daredevil run. Why not here? Every creator has a vision of who Spider-man is. We saw the Raimi "Peter as young dork" vision. And we got three movies for him to spread out the story. I see no problem with a new direction and again, I think visiting Spider-man as an older twentysomething will still seem like a continuation. Older, wiser with bigger, more complex problems. Real adult issues. Peter Parker IS more than just a dork. He's a budding scientist, a photographer, a family man, and he has a wit that rivals the best stand up comics. Let's see some of that.

These comics have been around for over 40 years. That's a looooong time, and there is a lot of history and ideas for the writers to pull from. I just hope that the stuff they go for is some of the older stuff-from the Lee/Ditko, Lee/Romita runs. The newer stuff might be fresher to the younger fans, but the older storylines are better, and so are the older characters. VULTURE, ELECTRO, RHINO, KRAVEN, LIZARD, MORBIUS, SHOCKER-now here are some terrific foes for Spidey to face off against. BLACK CAT, CARNAGE, VENOM, YUCK!

I would guess that some of that is going to rub off on the next two Spidey installments.

I gotta admit, I got bored watching every single Spider Man movie, very early on (aside from Mr. Campbell's cameos). Maybe it's because I've never read comic books, but I seriously doubt that. Hell, the only reason I watched Spider Man 3 was because it had a cool Texan playing the Sandman, and I wanted to walk out starting 20 minutes in; but while I didn't, I never felt differently about that motive. Now that Iron Man's out (for example), and all the Comic Book Guys have seen it... why bother defending the Spider Man movies? There now are actual, major, comic book hero figures that inspired good movies, why defend those Spider Man flicks?

The movie opens recapping the climatic battle in Spider-man 3 where Parker initiated the now famous "Buddy Drinking Game". But sadly, his buddy is now dead. He carries Harry around calling him Buddy, but with his faithful friend unable to respond "Yeah, Buddy", Parker feels lost. Like a really boring sequel to Weekend at Bernies with Spider-man in it. So he searches for Kraven who knows a guy that works with a guy that's into Voodoo. Spider-man must fight a Voodoo priest while being poked in the ribs by a Voodoo Spider-man doll in order to force him to be his friend and work his Voodoo magic. But something goes terribly wrong. I scroll through and I see that all the X-Men are shit, and Singer is shit, Raimi is shit, Superman returns..shit, every spiderman..shit, iron man..not a good enough bad guy, almost every batman...shit. everyone turned on Raimi. I've always just mildly enjoyed the Spidey films, but my biggest problem with them that kept me from loving them were always the scripts and the casting. I always thought Raimi's directing was pitch perfect for the series. And this is coming from someone who was completely unfamiliar with Raimi and the Evil Dead series before these movies. I'm just kinda stunned at how quickly the talkbackers, the majority of whom worshipped him 3 years ago, have turned against him, after ONE out of his 3 movies sucked. I'm not here to argue why he should get another chance or anything...just shocked is all.

I saw it opening day and walked out thinking "wow what an embarrassing failure from actors and a director I admired." I told my friends "this one really missed the mark". They saw it the next night in century city, spotted Raimi at the showing and with the crowd howling at every gag (Peter cartwheeling in the air over Flash, GG singing itsy bitsy spider) they thought I was insane for not LOVING it. Years later they look back and can't even watch it all the way through. Yeah, we buy into hype, movies can rarely age well, and we're all nitpicking a-holes, but yes. One day we may even see the flaws in Iron Man.

...so for those of you comparing Spider-Man unfavorably to Iron Man please take a moment to ponder. Obadiah Stane descended rather quickly into the foaming-at-the-mouth mad scientist rather abruptly and inexplicably built both a massive robotic suit of armor and piloted it flawlessly in relatively no time at all. The final battle was silly and rushed and didn't really jive with the pacing or tone of the rest of the movie. Most of the characters lacked real personality and the dialog was fairly standard action movie fare, save the ad-libbed lines by Robert Downey, Jr. Spider-Man may not hold up as well to repeat viewings as we once thought, but it did still have a sort of goofy charm to it. Spider-Man 2 was a vast improvement as Mr. Raimi tapped into his "Evil Dead" roots to give us one of the more memorable villainous "births" yet seen in a superhero movie. Spider-man 3 was riddled with flaws (and I in no way want to justify the direction those involved took this franchise), but they did provide us a few notable bits of imagery, particularly in the emergences of both the Sandman and Venom. The bottom line is this: what's popular now is not always better than what was popular in forgone years. The best movie ever made likely wasn't and won't be released this year, and it more than likely won't come out during the summer. 'Tis the season for bright lights, big booms and delightful cinematic absurdity.

I think it's more of a result of seeing how Raimi focused on the weaker aspects of the previous two movies when making 3. I really liked the first one and loved Spidey 2, but the weren't perfect, of course. Spidey 3 exacerbated the weaker elements of its predecessors so it's not like the suckage of 3 came out of nowhere. It's failure was built in, but Raimi could have avoided it by concentrating on the parts that made 1 & 2 so great.
I also think Maguire and Dunst got a hell of a lot more weight to throw around than they did in the other two. 3 is full of those vain actorly moments where you can just tell the stars said "I wanna try this" or "I feel the character must be this way". They fucked the characters just so they could sing/cry/dance or whatever the hell they wanted to try as thespians rather than serve the property.
THAT'S what's pissing us off. We expected better from Raimi. -

Spidey should have had them from day one of the COMIC. He got all those other spider powers, why not shoot webs? It makes as much sense as him sticking to walls. And yeah, he's a bright kid, but he's going to just keep manufacturing this beyond state-of-the-art material all the time, and keep them conveniently in his pockets? It was a bad idea to begin with. Yes, it's time to give Sam Raimi a rest and bring in new blood. Whoever said that the Spidey films have zero rewatchability was right. The first hour of the first film sent shivers up my spine when I saw it in the theater - I was just so damn excited to see Spider-Man on the screen! But try to watch again and it's just all flat. And for all the Spidey 2 love, I'm sorry, that movie is way too flawed. Great fight scenes, Ock looks cool -- but... Oh, sure, Doc Ock can make his own nuclear fireball in his APARTMENT. Yeah. And then the same nuclear fireball just sinks harmlessly into the East River. Uh-huh. And Spidey gets some soot in his eye on the subway car -- and takes his mask off in public. NO NO NO!!! And I lost count of how many times he took his mask off in 3. (I'm guessing this was a studio mandate so that we could see Tobey's face as he emotes.) And why introduce Gwen Stacy?? I read somewhere that Avi & Sony said "the fans wanted it." Not this one. And they make her a MODEL?? And fun and vivacious. So basically they turned Gwen into MJ, and made me realize that Ms. Dunst is the virginal boring Gwen after all. Idiots. And Harry as Flying Snowboard Ninja Guy -- ridiculous. I could go on and on, but it's all been said on this board. I'd love for Marvel Studios to wrestle this property back, take stock in what was done wrong, listen to the fans, say FUCK OFF to Sony and the idiot studio types who've probably never read a Spidey comic in their lives - and redo the next film right. But I know that probably will never happen. But one can dream....

I think that it would be in Marvel's-and the fans-best interests to somehow get control of their characters back from the studios that have them. If, as I hope, IRON MAN wasn't just some lucky little miracle, then they should be handling their own propereties, not farming them out to studuios/filmmakers who don't truly understand the characters. I know I'll get derided for this, but the only Marvel movie that I have out-and-out hated was ELEKTRA. But there has been a lot wrong with their films. Granted, not everything can be perfect, but there is a lot of room for improvement. Start with the scripts, give thre writers time to get them right, not cave in to time constrained mediocrity. Get a director who truly cares AND understands the material, and then cast the film with actors who can pull off the roles, not just big names and/or someone who looks the part. But don't rush things! take the time to do it right, and you'll have a film that will not only stand the test of time, measure up comparably to the best the comic book-to-film genre has offered, but will probably satisfy most of the hard-core fans of this material. But also remember that there are many of the comic fans who are going to tear the film up no matter what they do. I have loved comic boooks for many years, but I know that when I enter a theater, I need to let the film do its own thing. Changes are inevotable, and some of them serve the purpose of the film in a good way. No one is ever going to bring a Lee/Kirby masterpice to screen verbatim, so get over it.

Spider-Man 1 & 2 were pretty damn good, and 2 deserves to be ranked amongst the best Superhero movies ever. 3 was an abortion as anyone with half an eye open can see where the original script was and what was shoved in as fan service. The whole Venom storyline was so badly stitched in that it overwhelmed the excellent parts of the film, which were pretty much everything involving Sandman and the Harry with Amnesia story. As an approximation I would guess the original draft had Spidey concentrating on Sandman while Harry slowly regained his memory leading to a Goblin/Sandman team up in which Gwen Stacy (who would have had a more credible romantic role) would have died as spidey was forced to chose between MJ and Gwen. As I watched the film I could almost see this story, like a shadow in the background. The Venom thing was shoehorned in for fan service and made no sense at all and, as can be seen by the direction of those scenes, certainly didn't engage Sam Raimi. I honestly believe that the whole Venom episode was forced on Raimi by movie suits, and rather than walk away from all the work he'd put into the franchise he chose to soldier on and try to make a silk purse from a big pile of monkeys wank. Instead of ranting against Raimi who has proven himself again and again to be a visionary director and storyteller lets back him up and say "let him do his thing!" Get the studios to back off and let the man do what he does best- telling bastard good stories!

I haven't noticed if anyone else has mentioned this, but the spidey sense has been way underutilized in the last 3 pics and that has bothered me a lot. So when the studios hire me to save the franchise there will be a lot more funny wise cracks during battles, the spidey sense will be reinstalled as a critical component of spidey's fighting powers and I'll scale back on the sappy, sentimental love story drama and bring a lighter tone to the movie.Yea thats the ticket.

For all u fans who think the first two spiderman's were perfection I gotta disagree. The love story slowed down the pace and the action scenes left a lot of room for improvement (except for that slow motion scene where Doc Oc throws the car through the cafe). Also SM2 coped out just as badly as 3 with Doc Oc repenting at the end and then saving the day. That was some wussified shit. And then having spidey reveal his identity to MJ so early in the franchise--the fucking Kingpin of CopeOuts.

I was a huge comic book fan growing up, but a lot of these comic movies suck. Until the studios decide to do it right I'm gonna complain my ass off. So for all of u asking why people just come online to complain this is the reason why. What is the use of having CGI if these directors can't have really good,creative and prolonged fight scenes. The guys who wrote the comics knew how to do it, even the guys who do the cartoons know how to as well so whats holding back the movies. Even Iron Man could have had a more interesting foe to fight at the end.

The first two Spideys were all "ooh, Mary Jane is an angel, every fanboy's dream" and "Harry is a jealous little whining prick" and "Peter is such a pure hearted soul, so innocent..." In the third film, they were allowed to be real people. We saw how all three of our main characters had the capacity for good, evil, and bitchiness. I know most mainstream moviegoers just want the pure melodramatic fantasy in their summer movie menus, but somebody like me who craves a little more depth, Spiderman 3 was a welcome change of course.

All the third film did was turn Peter Parker into an unlikeable schmuck. His disco strut up the street was completely stupid and uncalled for. "They were allowed to be real people"...NOT!!! The fact of the matter is, they're not real people. SPIDER-MAN 3 took a left turn onto stupid street. A sign was hanging that said "DO NOT ENTER HERE" but Sony and Raimi decided to ignore that, and the result of their miscalculation has been seen by millions. Anyone who liked #'s 1 & 2 didn't like #3, and with good reason. It was not a good film, for a lot of reasons. It was like watching Marvel's version of BATMAN AND ROBIN. Those of us who like these kinds of movies want action and adventure, not character studies. The character of Peter Parker was just fine without Raimi turning him into a dislikable asshole. And they've stretched the Mary Jane crap farther than they should have. I got the feeling that the main people involved in the making of this film had ceased to care.

There was a lot wrong witht this movie, I felt. THE SANDMAN-the special effects were awesome, but his character was all wrong. Trying to make him sympathetic was a mistake. There's nothing wrong with having a bad guy who is truly evil. And trying to retrofit him into the death of Ben Parker was just plain WRONG. It did nothing except cheapen what happened in #1. Letting him get away in the end was another big mistake. Spidey should have caught him. MARY JANE-They have worn out the Mary Jane Watson soap opera angle. It does nothing but slow down the film. It is nothing but repetetive and stale. GWEN STACY-They had already put so much of the Gwen Stacy character into Mary JAne inthe first two films that this was ridiculous from the get-go. She was annoying and her presence was pointless, unless of course you have some affinity for the soap opera jibba-jabba that they used way too much. There was simply nothing likeable about her here, so it was nigh-impossible to care what happened to her. PETER PARKER-The things that were done with his character in this film were unforgiveable. By jamming the Venom business (more on that in a second) down our throats, they tried but failed to do a dark Peter Parker. He was laughable, not scary. They made Parker look like an idiot, which should never have happened. This good-guy-turns-bad crap has been done to death. Enough already. VENOM-Here is a character that should NEVER have been in this film in the first place. All this stuff about trying to appease the fanboys is bullshit. The character of Venom isn't that good to begin with. And what they did with him here was a complete and total waste. They couldn't give him enough screen time to do him justice, anyway. If they wanted to use Venom, they should have left the Sandman out totally and focused on Venom and the horror aspects of the character and what he could do. It was all just glossed over, a truly missed opportunity. He was wasted here. ALL-IN-ALL, I felt like I was watching one-and-a-half movies worth of stuff jammed into one movie. It wa done in a very heavy-handed manner, with very little logic and no care for the characters and their true potentials. SPIDER-MAN 3 was-except for cool spfx-a total and utter waste of time. Whether it was the fault of the writers involved, the director of the studio big-wigs will no doubt be endlessly debated. What is evident is that they were all at fault in one way or another. If there is to be a SPIDER-MAN 4 or 5, then that all needs to be rectified, and I can't see anything short of some sort of new talent infusion doing that. Face it-they strayed off the path and need to be pulled in.

The pacing of SPIDER-MAN 3 was a study in poor editing. This thing had more starts and stops in it than a weather-delayed NASCAR race. This is the type of film that should have built a steady momentum from the first moment. It was almost like they couldn't make up their minds what in the film was important enough to pay attention to. It was way too much spread way too thin. I felt like they said, "Okay this and this and this and this need to be in the film, and we don't care how you do it, as long as it's all there." This film was stuffed so full of stuff that it was regurgitating on itself. After #' 1 and 2, I had hoped that Sam Raimi had a real handle on everything, but that proved not to be the case. This film needed to be rethought out and rewritten in a serious way. It was like no one could decide on what direction to go. I think that the ever-present villain of TIME was a big factor here. If Sony had given Raimi and company more time, then perhaps they could have done something with this. As it was, it all felt rushed and that took a serious toll on the entire production. I guess that it's like the old saying go's - TOO MANY COOKS IN THE KITCHEN... I think Raimi, instead of being given the freedom he had earned by what he had accomplished in the first two films, was pushed into doing things he never would have done under better circumstances. Maybe he was just too tired to give a damn anymore. One of the unsung villains here is, in my opinion, Avi Arad. As a producer, this guy thinks he knows what's good about Marvel Comic Books and their characters, but he has missed the mark on more than one occassion. I think that he's out of the picture now, which can only be a good thing. From the stuff I've read, he pressured Raimi to do things he didn't really want to do, and Raimi couldn't or wouldn't stand up to the guy.

The more I heard and read about Avi Arad, the more I was reminded of Alexander Salkind,Ilya Salkind and Pierre Spengler. Those were three were the producers behind the Christopher Reeve SUPERMAN films, as well as SUPERGIRL and some other stuff. Most agree that SUPERMAN THE MOVIE was a masterpiece. But the credit there lies with director Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve, not the Salkinds and Spengler. When Donner departed, those three managed to ruin the series. SUPERMAN 2 was pretty not as good as the first, and 3 and 4 were pieces of celluloid tripe. The fact is that some of theses producer types are control freaks who may be good at number-crunching, but when it comes to making good movies, they don't know jack shit. For the record, I'd like to say that this is not true of every producer. The trick is to find people who can work together to make a project the best that it can be, instead of playing power games that may feed their enormous egos, but only harms the films they work on in the long run.

I'm sure there are those out there who would argue that without Avi Arad, the Marvel films would't have seen the light of day. But I personally believe that sooner or later someone would have seen the potential of the Marvel pantheon and the films would have been made. The quality of those products would have depended on a lot of factors. Avi Arad was just in the right place at the right time. I doubt that it had anything to do with any talent he has. He left Marvel to do his own thing. His first film after his Marvel departure-a film based on the BRATZ toys. Draw your own conclusions...

He may not have had the looks or acting chops down 100% but he would have SOLD the wisecracking Spidey that I think most comic fans appreciate the most. And Dunst as Mary Jane....WORST CASTING IN THE HISTORY OF COMIC MOVIES.

...in the form of Topher Grace as Eddie Brock and Bryce Howard as Gwen Stacy. Those two characters acted as an almost Bizarro alternate parallel existence to Peter and Mary Jane. Bryce Howard played the almost perfect "man's woman", beautiful without the bitchiness. Topher played a more self assured wise-cracking Daily Bugle photographer, someone who would've pulled off the "wise-cracking" Spidey better. This alternate universe played well with the intro of the Venom symbiote, as the theme of the film played with mirror images. Again, this "mirror image" theme, this alternate existence idea, goes back to Spider-Man 1, when we first saw its utilization with Norman Osborn in that film's creepy mirror scene.
Just another of the many brilliant touches lost on many mainstream moviegoers in Spiderman 3, but happily picked up on by this friendly neighborhood film lover. -
...were a stark contrast to Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Again, I think it plays into the fact that Sam Raimi wanted to show the Marvel-style "reality" of Peter Parker and Mary Jane. That life wasn't perfect for them the way it was for Gwen Stacy, or seemingly for Eddie Brock (until he's exposed for the fake he is) Unlike Gwen and Eddie (up to a point), life is not perfect for Peter and Mary Jane. This goes back to what Stan Lee was trying to do with his characters back in the 60's, particularly Spider-Man, giving us super-heroes with regular everyday problems.

Fyi, in the comics, Sandman eventually becomes a sympathetic character, even a do-gooder. I think this was first seen in an old issue of Marvel Two-In-One from the 80's when the Thing and Sandman have a drink together at a bar on Yancy Street.

in the fight between peter and harry, harry should have been killed. this would have gotten rid of the batman and robinesque team up at the end, and would have been a better way for peter to realize the suit was changing him, rather than smacking MJ. spidey should have then confronted the sandman on his own, without MJ having been kidnapped (most overused plotline EVER). after battling to a standstill, spidey takes down the sandman by using downed powerlines to turn him into glass. peter stumbles into the church, the bells ring, the costume drops down onto brock, he becomes venom. roll credits. no sappy crying and no sappy sandman asking forgiveness and floating away.

the symbiote should have came to earth on the space shuttle as it returns from a mission to mars or uranus or wherever..... in a twist of irony, pete has to save MJ's ex boyfriend John Jamison from the shuttle before it crashes (think superman returns scene... only better)a "sample" onboard the shuttle attaches itself to peter... i think this would have been much better than the blob/slither/night of the creeps opening to the movie. and it would have given a much better reason for spidey to be getting the key to the city and such.

I do prefer your idea for introducing the symbiote. And the John Jamison character could have been utilized more, other than just as a sucker for MJ to dump in S2.
However...
I liked how Harry is able to make a choice and redeem himself to his friends and the world, and in a way, redeems the Osborn legacy. I liked how Harry becomes a hero. How he himself has realized that "with great power comes great responsibility."
I liked how even Sandman learns this universal Marvel truth. How in Raimi's universe, even a criminal can learn redemption and see the error of his ways, as opposed to being evil all the way to the electric chair. And remember, Sandman becomes a good guy in the comics.
Had the film ended with Eddie Brock becoming Venom, there would have had to have been a continuation of the story with Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, etc. and we can't be sure any of them would have come back for the fourth film. Sam Raimi was able to tie up the story arc of Peter, MJ, and Harry, however, which is the heart of this trilogy. Venom, imo, was always a lousy villain anyway and, imo, deserves minimal treatment in a movie. -
...it wouldn't have been good if Peter (even if he was "Dark Peter") had killed Harry. Not good at all. For parents, for the legacy of Peter Parker as a hero in the Spider-Man films, just in general. Spider-Man can't kill. It's part of who he is.

This is a comic book movie, for Pete's sake. You're trying to read way more into it than is necessary. Too many people spend way too much time trying to psychoanalyze films like this. Save your effort. Have fun. Oh, I know about the Sandman, turning into a "good-guy"-I've been regarding comics since the mid-60's. But now he's back to being a villain, WHICH IS WHAT HE SHOULD BE! They realized their mistake and fixed it.

Analyzing films, finding the crazy sub-text, is fun to me. Dare I say, it's a thrill. I'm a student of film, and I like to bring the same level of criticism I'd bring to a Kurosawa or Fellini film to these "super-hero" flicks, because some of them, like Spider-Man or Hulk or Batman Begins can actually hold up under such scrutiny. Like I said, it's fun for me, so no worries.
As far as treating the material like a "comic book", that's probably what people told Stan Lee back when he was doing what he did back in the 60's. But instead, he went on to write the classic Spider-Man and Fantastic Four stories, the Silver Surfer, which dealt with universal issues like relationships, racism, raising a family, etc., issues usually left out of the "comic books" of the day. -
You make some valid points, especially about Dunst and Maguire, both of whom I would be more than happy to see leave the series. And honestly, Raimi SHOULD be blamed for them. But I do think, with a good script and a new cast (Gyllenhaal wouldn't be a bad replacement, though as others have mentioned, I doubt he'd do it), Raimi could still be the right director for the series. Might. That said, he probably wouldn't WANT to direct a new cast, or what many of us would consider a "good script," since he does seem to actually like the eye-rolling stuff that kept me from loving the movies in the first place, so maybe it is time for a total cast/crew overhaul. I just hope they don't go The Incredible Hulk route and get someone uninspired like the Transporter director as his replacement.And I REALLY hope Maguire and Dunst don't come back, because I never warmed to them.

They need to re-boot this franchise. Firstly Topher Grace would have been so much better as Peter Parker. Secondly Kirsten Dunst was crap as MJ. I reckon Sophia Bush would have been a lot better.
Also in the second film with Jameson's Son they could had him bringing back a metorite from his space trip, then maybe after the credits show the rock in a lab leaking black goo. Start of third film could have Spidey investigating an attack in the area and getting the symbiote on him.
Also Spider 2 or 3 could have at least started with him stopping someone like the Shocker from robbing a bank. I hope Marvel gets the rights back of Sony and sort out this mess.

Firstly I thoroughly enjoyed Iron Man but this film does have fairly big flaws. More so than Begins which I did enjoy also, this film has severe 3rd act syndrome i.e. Jeff Bridges turns into just the worst type of cackling villain that this film seemed to be better than. Secondly, Terrence Howard was pretty redundant, having next to no charisma in his role whatsoever. And the final fight should have ended with Stark's line about the icing problem and not dissolving away into tedium. Lastly the final scene with Sam Jackson is absolutely rubbish. Exciting to realise the Avengers may be on the cards but Sam Jackson look awkward, and there is lack of any energy in that scene feeling incredibly tacked on. Does not compare to Begin's Joker surprise. The film is good fun, 7.5/10 but it is not on the X2/Batman Begins/Superman and yes I said it to all you Raimi haters who worshipped him four years ago, Spiderman 2 axis. That being said some of you lot will do your fanboy and start calling Iron Man the worst comic book movie ever as you lot are doing now to Spideys 1 and 2. Why are some of you people incapable of seeing shades of grey? Every film is either a masterpiece or the worst thing ever. I will make this clear though - Spiderman 3 is not the worst film ever, just a case of a director reaching for far too much and exceeding his grasp, It is not Batman and Robin, just a disappointment.

You morons want a reboot of Spidey this soon? Are you all fucked in the head? You cannot reboot a franchise so soon after the last film, you need to wait a good 7-8 years like they did with Batman, people need to kind of forget about the character for a while and then a fresh perspective will be welcome. Now I may be one of the few who did not think that Spidey 3 was as awful as everyone else seems to think, it was flawed, a bit sloppy, but I guess I just went with it and enjoyed it, maybe more than I should have. So explain to me why it made $336 million if it was so bad?

any of the old Batman films, or the Superman films for that matter, but, fuck Sam Raimi and Bryan Singer for getting me used to some quality superhero films, and then pulling out the goddamn rug.
There are definitely shades of grey, but when you walk out of a movie shaking your head, and feeling slightly cheated and pissed off, it's fair to say "that movie sucked." Which Spidey 3 did.
Iron Man gets love because it's deserved, and it gives us hope for the future of superhero movies, just when that hope had been lost thanks to X3, Spidey3, etc. -
Raimi strikes me as a director who knows when he's shit the bed, so if he gets another chance I think he might make things right. It's a good time to wield the power of nerd influence- with the success of Iron Man, and hoping the Watchmen goes over well, and really hoping that The Spirit will do well (don't hold your breath though) The execs will be more willing to bend for Raimi and his kind bending to our will. That's the theory, anyhow.

I'm just a bit tired of hearing that Iron Man is the Second Coming because when I did see the film all I saw was a very good film, nothing earth-shattering. Kinda of like the Pirates of the Carribean of superhero films - i.e. good summer fun! But you're are right - Marvel haven't given us a good film since Spidey 2 in 2004 so it's nice to be reminded that there is hope. I guess I'm not a fan of the hyperbole that's thrown around on this board all the time.

To answer your question though, there are three simple answers off the top of my head: Marketing, Summer blockbuster season, and the success of the previous two films. Oh, and because even though we might know it sucks, we can't not go see the thing in the theater. Because we're nerds. -

Dead on assessment of Iron Man. It wasn't what AICN hyped it to be: that is, anywhere close to the geek-viagra/cinematic-ambrosia it was billed as. But, it was a fun and a decent flick.

I will go on record as saying that I really liked Spiderman 3 and my opinion is that it's way underrated. Okay, sure, we didn't get that much Venom but then again, the story isn't about Venom; it's about the corruption and redemption of Spiderman because of the black suit. It seems to me that Venom was always meant be more of the aftermath of this particular story. Sure, I'd have preferred if there was a quick reveal at the end that Venom was still alive but they can always just tag that onto the beginning of Spiderman 4 instead and make Venom begin the film as a villain, then transition him into an ally of Spidey's against Carnage. That way the filmmakers would have more time to flesh out every unnecessary detail about the symbiote that they didn't have time for in Spiderman 3. And I think that could even redeem aspects of the third film that people had problems with.

Spiderman 4: Citizens on Patrol -
...and improve on the mistakes apparent in Spider-man 1 & 2.

Spider-Man 3 was the same as Batman Forever in terms of how the quality got shot to bits. That series has found itself in a dead end and prospect of a fourth has Batman & Robin written all over it.
And considerring the laughable casting choices in part 3, with the exception of Sandman, I can see Kraven played by Arnold Schwarzeneggar, The Black Cat played by Julia Roberts and The Vulture being played by Richard Pryor. -
Anybody whose read his talkbacks can tell he sees the trilogy from a filmakers point of view which is why he likes the movies so much. Most comic fans don't care about "good film making" they just want the movies to stay true to the characters they grew up reading. He completely ignores those aspects of spiderman that the fans enjoyed the most and focuses in on minor, almost irrelevant aspects of spiderman and the other characters.

Maybe Stan Lee was able to increase the comicbook fan base by appealing to universal issues, but thats not why i got hooked. When I read comic books I wasn't thinking "wow spiderman really reflects the teen angst I'm going through at this stage of my life". Nah, I just thought these were some really cool characters. Its the reason I prefered Marvel over DC. DC was overloaded with lame characters even though they did have a lot of cool ones. I'm interested in Universal Issues, but I'm not gonna read a comic book to learn more about them and dealing with issues like discrimination never attracted me to comics. I've always thought comics didn't have enough cool black characters and even in the 80's the white writers would use 60's slang like 'jive turkey' or 'slap me some skin' for their black characters.

Yeah but, they kinda messed up Venom in the same way as Harvey Dent in Batman Forever - a deep and complex character just thrown into the mix for the hell of it, a namecheck to fill seats rather than a meaningful addition to the story, with their all-important slow-burning origin and motivations glanced over and the fact both of them teamed up with the other villain of the piece which went totally against their characters.
Then they did the same again only in it's extreme, for Batman & Robin. Who's to say Spider-Man 4 won't do exactly the same, as judging by the merchandise-friendly SPider-Man 3, that's pretty much what we're gonna get.
I'd personally like for them to start again, do the Ultimate story or something. If only for someone else to have another crack at the Venom story. It'd be a crying shame if Venom never gets a good story in the movies simply because his story was done in Spidey 3.
Maybe one day. 2008 will finally see a proper take on the Two-face character and put right all the sins Batman Forever made against that character. Hopefully, one day, someone will do the same for Venom. -
the suit is evil. get it? peter would never do something like that without the suit on. the thing is, harry could have died in that scene, but didnt. peter wasnt even concered if he had lived or died. a bigger emotional punch would have been if harry DID die. he flung a grenade at him for christsakes

That was by far the best scene in the last film and probably one of the best realisations of a comic book characters genesis I've ever seen. You could tell that was probably the one moment of the film Raimi wouldn't let anyone else f*ck with come life or death. You definitely tell which bits in Spidey 3 Raimi gave a real damn about, aswell as the ones he probably begrudgingly threw in (the entire Venom arc) due to studio pressure. The quality leaps about all over the place and you can definitely see the original vision for the movie, but it's been smearred and distorted a little, while some scenes were outright injected with chemicals to make it look pretty and left the film crying inside; popular but without any real friends.

they shoehorned Venom in to introduce the symbiote as a conflcit for Peter. I wish they'd taken this back-to-back shooting approach with 3&4. The best parts of 3 were Topher Grace, Flint Marko's accident, the aerial fight, and the deliberately sober ending. There was no victory swing through the city at the end of this one. Peter and MJ embrace...fade to black. It was quiet, doleful, ambiguous, and STILL left it open for a sequel. The pieces were all there but no one managed to put them together in a coherent way. Gwen and dad need to sit the next one out unless they have some real significance. Unlike the typical fanboy, I'm not going to throw out any storyline suggestions for the next couple, I just want them to recast and make the story tight and comfy like the first two. And have Robert Downey Jr write some Spidey one-liners on the set?

Venom was the ONLY Spider-Man film villain that deserved to die. Even if Peter didn't mean to blow him to bits, Brock was just...evil and vindictive. Sandman, Ock, and GG all had redeemable qualities. I'm glad Venom wasn't given the "horrific experiment gone awry" treatment. Brock wanted it, he liked being the villain. That velociraptor noise was fuck-all though.

First as the blob/formless symbiote. Second, with Peter as its first host. Third, with Eddie as its last host, who also gives it the formal name. Venom is like the film's McGuffin, the entity that brings out the inner conflict of Peter, that brings out the nightmare scenario of an evil Spider-Man. The alien symbiote is the true villain in Spider-Man 3, and at the same time, it makes everyone, Peter, MJ, Harry, and Flint, look at their own selves in the mirror.

Is it possible that the alien symbiote, an obviously intelligent lifeform, actively sought out Peter Parker, the most powerful human being on the planet Earth? That the alien somehow directed its little "falling star" to land somewhere near Peter Parker?
And is it also possible that, the symbiote being a very intelligent crafty lifeform, perhaps actively sought out Eddie Brock, a soulless human being who wanted to kill Spiderman?
As for the freaky coincidence of Sandman being the guy who actually shot Ben Parker, well...in the past two films, the two villains were also somehow connected to Peter, almost father figures, Norman Osborn, his best friend's dad, and Otto Octavius, a sort of professor/mentor. Flint Marko obviously couldn't be any kind of direct father figure to Peter, but in a way, is more important. Marko unwittingly is the most important "father" to Peter, in that he is the one that makes Peter realize that "with great power comes great responsibility." This, then, completes the Trilogy of all three "human" villains being "surrogate fathers" to Peter Parker/Spiderman. Kind of brilliant if you ask me... -
..which would have been way better than Venom. I suggest they consider using the Scorpion in the (Vin Diesel, anyone?) and add Smythe and a Spider-Slayer to the mix. Throw in the drama of Aunt May close to death; you have a cliffhanger for the fifth film. Introduce the Vulture (Robert Englund or Sir Ben Kingsley) and a Kraven hunting for Spidey (or maybe a Lizard terrorizing New York City) and you have two back-to-back films leaving room for another sequel. It's a thought.

I saw this movie with my Papa on DVD last month and I LOVED IT, what you're saying is balony, it's the sort of manure that an english guy would say. I think these films are great, I can't wait to see the first two. You need to take your fingers out of your Colo and start having FUN man!

I never said that "it must be a good film because it made so much" I have already stated it was the weakest of the 3 films, and yes a lot of stuff seemed "tacked on", despite it's flaws i enjoyed it. All i was doing was asking why it made so much money if it was as bad as everyone is saying. $336 million is an awfully large gross for a film that most people didn't seem to like isn't it? I know a large gross doesn't make a bad film good, but $336 million seems a bit much for a movie no one liked is all I am saying.

Before Spider-man 3 Sam Raimi, his Spider-man films and the cast were the best. Now, after the third one, it´s the opposite.
I think Spider-man 3 filed because Avi Arad wanted Venom in, and the script was done with Volture in his place (and Ben Kingsley for that role... it´s said in Spider-man 3 dvd´s commentary track).
Then Mr. Arad told Raimi to do the change and now we have results for that. -
just had to react. I enjoyed iron man and im a fan but no way is it better than BB. i dont think it will age well, but bb will be a classic. and Nolan > Favreau.

Hey, at least it's a cheap idea, reusing the same shot of Spidey swinging towards the camera 30 times! Not to mention obvious wires carrying him into the air on take-off! Also, if Spidey builds a giant net to carry Earth's entire Nuke arsenal, we at least know where he got the material!

It makes me laugh to see what a few years does to movies that were originally praised. Toby was a great choice now, he needs to be recast, are you fucking kidding? Toby IS Spider-Man. I do agree with letting another director have a crack at it to freshen it up a bit. I think Rami wants to move on to something else that isn't Spider-Man. Spider-Man 1 & 2 are excellent, 3 was silly at times and I was hoping for a darker story, but it is what it is.

I aint jumping on the Spidey Hate Train. In my eyes Toby was never a great choice to play Spider-Man. I will admit he was ok in the first 2 films and Spider-Man 2 was great (mostly). But Spider-Man 3 was terribly bad and watching Topher Grace as Eddie Brock proved that Peter Parker could have been played better.

I reckon Spider-Man would make a decent TV series a.l.a Smallville.
Could mix up the history and timeline a tiny bit like Smallville did maybe following the Ultimate series. I reckon it is totally do-able.
If not then seeing as Iron Man is kinda set in the Ultimate universe then reboot the Spider-Man films in the same verse. (Once Marvel gets the rights back) -
spidey 1 and 2 were ok (although too kiddy, colorful, with horrible cgi), but i always pictured parker as sharp and witty, and let's just say tobey doesnt look sharp or witty. maybe some think he IS spidey, but maybe thats because theres really no one to compare him to. kinda like keaton's batman was batman until bale came along.

Tobey Maguire IS Peter Parker. Hell, he's more Peter Parker than the comic book Peter Parker. In comics, you have to draw your characters somewhat handsome, because, well it doesn't work any other way in comic book art. Tobey Maguire is the living embodiment of what Peter Parker should be. It was brilliant casting, and you should all be happy and thankful. Topher Grace...give me a break... -

I have no emotional attachment to Spider-man so I am not going to say I HATE it like I do Superman Returns, but I will say that Spider-man 3 was one of the stupidest movies I have ever seen. Seriously.

From what I understand, there was originally a script for Spidey 3 and 4, which encompassed the symbiote saga. Why didn't they do that?
