Learn Who Plays The Mother Of The First Cylon on CAPRICA!!

Published at:  Dec 01, 2008 11:03:25 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Paula Malcolmson (Trixie on “Deadwood” and Jerri on “John From Cincinnati”) will play the mother of Zoe Graystone, whose likeness and personality are utilized to create the first Cylon in the SciFi TV-movie “Caprica,” a pilot prequel set 50 years before the events depicted in “Battlestar Galactica.”

Malcolmson plays Amanda Greystone (not to be confused with Amanda Greyson, who was Spock’s mom), a surgeon who goes to extraordinary lengths to help her husband revive her dead 16-year-old daughter via robotics.

For those unfamiliar with "Caprica," here's a rundown of its main characters (BEWARE SPOILERS!):

* DANIEL GRAYSTONE is literally the father of the Cylons, a fortysomething “spectacularly wealthy” computer designer.

* ZOE GRAYSTONE, Daniel’s hot 16-year-old daughter, dies in a suicide bombing. Daniel learns that Zoe – like iconic “Twin Peaks” dead teenager Laura Palmer – had many secrets. For one thing she was a closeted monotheist! For another, she was even more of a technological genius than daddy Daniel, and succeeded in secretly uploading her personality and DNA into a holographic avatar. Daniel comes to combine the Zoe avatar with stolen technology to create the first Cylon, “a robotic version of his dead daughter.” Oo!

* JOSEPH ADAMS, Bill Adama’s pop and Romo Lampkin’s future mentor, is a fortysomething Tauron native who long ago emigrated to Caprica and overcame anti-Tauron prejudice to become an influential defense attorney on the capital planet. Joseph’s wife and daughter (Bill’s mother and sister) die in the same blast that killed Zoe Graystone. Joseph Adams and Daniel Graystone, despite their very different backgrounds, are bonded by the tragedy. Adams, who still has “powerful ties to the Tauron crime underworld” helps Greystone create the first Cylon by stealing cutting-edge robotic technology from a Tauron computer developer.

* TAMARA ADAMS, Joseph’s dead daughter, may also be resurrected as a robot, but Joseph – much like the dad in Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary” – comes to regret his role in the Cylonic creations.

* AMANDA GRAYSTONE, Daniel’s thirtysomething wife, is a successful surgeon devastated by the loss of her beloved daughter Zoe.

* TOMAS VERGIS is Amanda Graystone’s Tauron ex-lover and one of her husband’s chief competitors. Following Zoe’s death, Amanda covertly returns to Vergis’ bed to learn more of the tech that might be used to resurrect her daughter.

* SISTER CLARICE WILLOW is another closeted monotheist and the headmistress of the Athena Academy, the polytheistic religious school Zoe attended. A product of colonial slums, the sister is presumably responsible for converting young Zoe into a monotheist.

* BEN STARK is Zoe’s unbalanced monotheist-fanatic boyfriend, the suicide bomber who kills, among many others, Zoe, Tamara, Bill Adama’s mom and himself in a horrific train bombing. He too secretly uploaded himself into a holographic avatar. But his can only be contacted by headmistress Willow.

* WILLIAM ADAMS, a dour 9-year-old introvert unaware of his Tauron heritage, is Joseph Adams’ sole surviving child. Like John Connor, he will prove humanity’s savior in a universe ruled by murderous robots.

Did the daughter look like the Cylons from the original show? Poor unfortunate child. She would have been teased something rotten in school. Unless they are just retrofitting the history and making it up as they go along, worrying about the consequences later or never. But the BSG writers wouldn't do that, would they?

and skiffys track record on successful series runs about 20%. Farscape, BSG, Eureka, and SG Atlantis. Anything else they created that didn't flop hard & fast? (SG1 and Tripping the Rift werent skiffy)

Painkiller Jane, Flash Gordon, Tremors, First Wave, Black Scorpion, Lost Room, Good vs Evil etc..

Weren't they shocked in BSG to discover the Cylons looked like humans now? ie - human cylons were a NEW thing. Making the first cylon look like a young girl is nonsensical - unless she is a very robot looking young girl.

I would have preferred a more Asimov style take - creating robot slaves basically that are supposed to be mindless but are they? Instead of more "replicas of humans" stuff...

Jack Colby, Battlestar IS a soap opera.

    by stereotypical evil archer

So Caprica wouldn't be breaking any new ground. If Battlestar was a sci fi action series then there should be action and battles in the stars (hence the title)every episode, but it's really just a character drama or "soap opera" or "space opera." Caprica will be a "planet opera."

    The Script

    by skip divided

...isn't bad. It's not spectacular either... but one thing it sure is not is a soap opera. It's very much a drama set on a planet linked to the BSG universe.

And the reason he is called Adams isn't anything to do with any Adama being a Cylon. Think about it - it's dead obvious.

    One more thing...

    by skip divided

... it may be the first BSG related programme to use actual swearing. Frak is still ever present but this time we have 'shit' to add to the vocabulary as well. Not sure whether they'll alter that line by the time it hits the screen though. Also they might take some of the sex and drug references. Just a guess though.

    by namasteandgoodluck

I really used to love this show. It's too bad the writers and producers don't really care so much about it; they have no idea where they are going with the script (which is why it's coming to an end, I'm sure), poor production schedule and a shitty time slot (how many of you actually watch BSG when it's on? I catch it online...I have a life. You know, go out, drink, meet women and get laid...oh yeah, this is AICN so none of you get pussy, I'm sure) and it's on the worse channel ever. Thanks for another huge letdown, Sci-Fi network. If you ever want to turn it around, let me know and I'll show you how to dominate Nielsen households.

    by dredwardmorbius

...that they were toasters before and only "evolved" themselves to look like humans during the time when humans did not see or hear from them, hence the suprise at the diplomatic sattelite in the first ep., so, that was wrong, eh?
On another note, Summer Glau has played a teen whack-a-do with extraordinary powers, and a teen cyborg, so she's already got the chops...probably could just use some of the Term:TSCC footage...then again, I'd watch anything with Summer in it...

    Just because...

    by uroboros

..the scientist is trying to revive his dead daughter somehow doesn't mean the robot looks human. or that it even looks early Cylon. It's a robot..it can look like anything.

My guess is that the whole point of this is is the ability to transfer human essence into the machine. or something along those lines. maybe it doesn't work, or perhaps it does and it's kept secret and all that we're left with are the beginnings of the original model Cylon. But the experiments come into play later when the human Cylons appear.

Of course none of this would explain why there are models of human Cylons 4000(?) years before the events of Caprica. :)
