Merrick here...

Yesterday we linked out to a Hollywood Reporter piece about George W. Bush biographers' reactions to Oliver Stone's new script about Dubya. You can find that report HERE.

Now comes word that HR's Risky Biz blog has posted several pages from the script itself.

You can read RBB's set-up for this HERE.

Or, you can jump directly to a .pdf of the script pages by clicking...

Thanks to EL PRESIDENTE for pointing us to this.

is that back around the beginning of the war in Iraq, I remember saying "Man wouldn't it be great if, in 25 years, the last masterpiece of Oliver Stone's career was some awesome WTC-inside-job/Iraq-War-profiteering conspiracy mindfuck."Instead we get this movie of the week sounding lionizing of GW Bush, the chickenshit little toadie who never did jack shit for himself. That "Axis of Evil" conversation is laughable. Is that what we're supposed to believe happened? Give me a fucking break, he sat back while he was spoon-fed every 'idea' this administration has had.

Okay, I get it, you wacko libs despise Bush and everything he stands for (which isn't much, he bent over backwards for Dems throughout his domestic policy). But if you're going to make a "biopic" about someone, shouldn't you at least attempt some semblence of reality to it? If all you want to do is parody him, just watch Lil Bush and Where's My Bush, and every other political show on 98% of TV stations. If you claim it's got some versimilitude, then don't insult half the country in the name of salving your bitter twisted hearts. I mean, come on! Where's the cutting movie about the Clintons?!? The family's entire political life is a giant soap opera! No fictionization required!

Man, those script pages blew. He's going to go with a simplistic parody when the true complexity of this guy and his family is much more interesting and dark. What a fucking cop out. This story is a slam dunk. I can't believe he's going to fuck up such a straight forward boondoggle especially when so much of it has been so tirelessly documented. This should be approached like an Alan J. Pakula film from the 70's. God, I wish it was Paul Thomas Anderson directing this. "There Will Be $4.00 At The Pump".

Movies like this won't motivate the Democratic base (at least not that part of it that has two brain cells to rub together). This is just going to galvanize the GOP and serve as a call to arms for all those Rush Limbaugh swilling ditto heads. Within one month, conservative groups will be petitioning theaters and distributors to block the release of this movie. And Hollywood being as spineless as it is, the conservative nut jobs will succeed too. How in the hell is any studio greelighting this in the first place?

When hating Bush, who needs quality?

    by dirkbelig

Hollywood thinks that just spewing rage and bile is enough and that we should be happy to pay $10 to watch them jerk off their fascist liberal fantasies. It's worked so well with "In the Valley of Elah", "Rendition", "Redacted", "Lions For Lambs", and "Stop-Loss", hasn't it?

    [crickets]

"Farginghype 7-11" didn't stop Bush from being re-elected - if anything, it motivated voters to support him against hypocritical Hollywood - so how Stone thinks rushing this fantasy film out in time for this go-round mystifies me. Bush isn't on the ballot and if he thinks a legitimate war hero like John McCain is going to be harmed is delusional. Given a choice between a moderate man who has served and sacrificed for his country; a lying harridan who is half of the team that has made $109 million (largely from Arab interests) and facilitated pardons for Puerto Rican terrorists in exchange for votes; and a corrupt Chicago gangster who has sat for two decades in the pews of a Black Nationalist "church" and exposes his young daughters to paranoid conspiracy lies about AIDS and 9/11; people will chose the war hero every time.

When Theo Van Gogh was murdered by an Islamofascist, Hollywood said nothing. When South Park wanted to satirize the rioting about cartoons depicting Mohammad, they were censored by Comedhimmi Central. But when Hollywood wants to pretend that they're soooooooo brave and "speaking truth to power", what do they do? Pressure Castro or Chavez? NO!!! They bash a lame duck President who will just turn the other cheek and leave office in nine months. Real brave! No one has dragged Tim Robbins and Sean Penn away in the middle of the night, never to be seen again? Michael "When's lunch?" Moore and Oliver "JFK, mein leige!!!" Stone are making movies unchecked and have their minges tongued by their fellow travelers. There is more risk in picking fights with Amish than bashing Bush.

Stone is a loon who clings to the fantasy that if JFK hadn't died, he would've stopped the Viet Nam war he started and Stone wouldn't have been traumatized. Wrong!!! If Daddy Joe Kennedy hadn't stolen the 1960 Election with his Mafia pals in Chicago, Nixon would've won and the war may not have started in the first place, or been better fought. Stone is a kook and a hack. Anyone who can make a buck naked Rosario Dawson into not-enough-to-turn-"Alexander"-into-a- watchable-movie doesn't deserve to film a kindergarten play, much less a major studio picture ever again.

News flash, asshole: Your hero Bush will be spit on for decades if not longer. As soon as he's out of office and no longer has to be defended as a figurehead, Republicans will spit on him too. This is absolutely certain, because in different ways Bush has outraged the conservative wing of the Republican party and the libertarian wing of the Republican party, and those groups are where the party draws its narratives and its intellectual justifications from. If those groups hate you AND the Democrats hate you, no one is going to stand up for you and everyone is going to take turns shitting on your face. And W just doesn't have the personal qualities to effect a grudging rehabilitation of his reputation the way Nixon did. So whine all you want, the Bush haters don't care and won't care. If anything your tears of frustration will taste very sweet to them. They sure taste sweet to me.

    Comparing Movies . . .

    by kevinwillis.net

Redacted doesn't belong with the rest. Rendition made $24 million world wide, which qualifies it as a flop against the likely production budgets and marketing, and Lions for Lambs made $57 million worldwide (most of it international, which I'll guarantee you is the target market for Stone's movie). In the Valley of Elah made $26 million (almost $20 of it international). Stop loss has made $8 million domestically, and will probably do at least twice that internationally. These aren't great performances, but they are just duds. Redacted, on the other hand, had a worldwide box office gross of $743 thousand dollars. There is no way that begins to cover the production budget. It doesn't really qualify as a movie.A better comparison might be Stone's Nixon, which made $13 million domestically. On a production budget of $44 million. It may have done better internationally, but still . . . it was not all that engrossing, and I expect it did not appeal to the foreign market much at the time. Where as a trashing of Dubya that makes the American president (and the folks who voted for him( look like frat-boys, cowboys, retards, and extra-chromosome members of the right wing will get a very good reception in the international market. But I expect it will be a domestic flop.

Or "incurious" or "unread". He did better in college than the brilliant John F. Kerry, and better than Al Gore. I think history will clarify that, as it is in the process of doing with Ronald Reagan. It'll just take a generation or two, but presidencies are so well-documented now I think the reality will be clear, at least to historians far enough past the Bush years to have no particular bias against the man, and no particular axe to grind. Who knows, in 100 years the Democrats might be the tax-cutting small government types, and the Republicans will be arguing that we need to surrender to our enemies and immolate any remaining vestiges of a distinct American culture so dessicated European socialist will like us better.

Take your blind patriotism, your willingness to bend over and get ass-fucked by the corporate-owned President, and your tired old "libs", "libbies" and "libtards" comments and go share them with the rest of the 29% who still want to suck Bush's dick.
71% of the country HATES the President now. You're seriously fucking outnumbered, and at this point you're just the fucking fringe. Even my 70+ year-old lifelong conservative parents (who lived through the Great Depression and World War II) are distancing themselves from the King of All Assclowns.

Seriously. To paraphrase a great man, "You ain’t leading but two things right now: Jack and Shit. And Jack just left town.”
Why do liberals hate President Bush? Because he's a villainous, selfish, weaselly, cowardly, greedy, terrible human being who has fucked this country and left it in far worse shape-- and less populated by young Americans-- than any President since World War II, and FDR had good reasons for losing troops in that war. There's a far fucking cry from a regime nearly conquering the world, and a tin-star despot in a shithole oil-producing country with no decent weapons or army to speak of.
So please, take your sanctimonius, paranoid, xenophobic, bigoted asses over to Free Republic and give EACH OTHER handjobs. We're not interested, and considering you're in the minority by a Big Fuckin Margin, you can't gang up shout us down like you're used to doing in a debate you can't win.

Oh, and as for the movie.

    by zerocorpse

I like Oliver Stone, but NOBODY, and I mean NO-FUCKIN-BODY wants to watch a movie about President dumbass. We want to forget him, we want him gone, and we don't want ANY marker in history to remind us that he shitted away 32% of our civil rights, hundreds of thousands of lives, and the respect of the world in just eight years.
Oliver Stone is fucking crazy if he thinks liberals will see this movie. We're Bushed-out. He's insane if he thinks conservatives will see this movie. The hardcore Bushies will be offended at the mere mention of "Oliver Stone" and "Bush" in the same sentence, and the ones who are sick of G.W. will avoid this like the rest of this.
Oliver Stone is making this movie for an audience of one: Himself. All-too-often, Stone likes to pull his own dick in the filmic sense, and he frequently forgets that movies need the attention of more than a handful of people in order to be worthwhile.
This is Oliver Stone's anti-fanwank, and I won't be putting a moment of my time into it at theaters, or on home video.

As for the vast majority being against Bush, that's because he's alienated the fiscal and social conservatives by joining hands with Dems and signing huge spending bills, and alienated the left simply by breathing. Batman Begins Sucks Ass

    by zerocorpse

Well, I wasn't really stating that we are a republic (But yes, we are, in the strictest sense. Honestly, we're a theocratically-influenced plutocracy if you want to get down-n-dirty about it, though). I was telling the conservatives that to go to their own political website (it's called "freerepublic.com" and they're known as "freepers") instead of trying their bully tactics here.
Too often, conservatives have this mental image of liberals being tree-hugging hippies, and they don't think we have the wherewithal to stand up to them when they start throwing a tantrum. As long as we avoid being hippy-dippy idiots, and keep the conversation at a level just a notch or two higher than theirs, we've got the high ground and all they have is a failed President who will go down in history as the worst President ever.
Whether you back Hillary, or Obama, or even McCain, you HAVE to recognize that Bush has been terrible for the United States and the world. Anyone still defending him at this point is a tinfoil hat-wearing, fringe freak who can't accept that they're wrong, and would rather see the country go down and everyone suffer than admit that a conservative President was an utter fucking failure as both a leader, and as a human being.
I'm no fan of McCain these days, now that he's been whipped into shape by the Bush boys, but I at least respect that HE was at war and can respect the deaths he'll most certainly cause overseas. Bush doesn't seem to even give a shit unless it provides a good photo op or fluff piece.
Just get to the polls. Be vigilant. Whichever Democratic nominee wins, you HAVE to support them if you want the end of this right-wing nightmare. Hillary and Obama would both would be a hundred times better than another Bushie in the White House. Stick with the main goal, which is to push them the fuck out of power and regain our motherfucking civil rights that Bush's team stole. We're the people in charge, and it's time we had a President that understands that they work for US, and not one that thinks they're King of America.
We are a republic, and one I'm (mostly) proud of. The bad guys may treat this place like it's a plutocracy, but that can be changed because the system was made to invoke such change. The founders weren't fools. They knew our system would become corrupt, and they built the tools to fix it right into the Constitution and Bill of Rights. They made a government that CAN right itself, if the People so will it.
There was once a time when you didn't have to even be a lawyer or politician to become President. The idea was that anybody with good ideas, and a willingness to serve the People could be considered a viable candidate. Maybe we need to stop looking to governors, senators, congressmen, and famous people, and start picking people who are just smart, or wise, or good-hearted.
Maybe the problem with politics is politicians.

Well, if a Democrat President had presided over the type of spending increases Bush has, I bet you'd hate him. Forget that Bush is a Republican for a minute, and ask yourself how you would react if the country elected a Democrat who was a recovering alcoholic who couldn't string two sentences together, and the guy proceeded to grow spending as fast as Johnson did, while signing a campaign finance reform bill, creating a new Medicare entitlement, pushing federal control over state and local education, and cutting VA spending while wounded vets in VA hospitals were crawled on by bugs and rats. And oh, this Democrat President regularly spies on whoever he wants without a warrant, and his chief adviser holds meetings with federal employees demanding that they conduct the business of their departments in a way that will help the President's re-election, and his Justice Department openly instructs all the other executive branch departments to start spuriously refusing to respond to FOIA requests. Oh, and a Republican Congress tries to investigate what this Democrat President is doing, but the Democrat laughs and tells his guys to ignore all subpoenas and all requests for information. I guarantee you that you would hate this Democrat President, and that there would be open talk of violent revolution or a military coup in Republican circles under such a set of circumstances.

    by zerocorpse

Name one point during the Vietnam conflict that the President or Congress passed ANYTHING even remotely similar to the USA PATRIOT ACT, or imprisoned people and tortured them just outside of American soil. Name one point during Nam when the President was fighting like hell to get the right to wiretap Americans. Name one point where soldiers were brought back to active duty after serving their tours, or after years of retirement. Name one point where the President of the United States or ANY of his cabinet used Vietnam as an opportunity to insinuate their own private companies into the country and profit from the war.
Vietnam was a shitstorm, to be sure, but the war profiteering, excuses to kill civil rights domestically, and shabbiest treatment of veterans all occurred since Bush was in office.
And I won't even BEGIN to discuss the fact that he has appointed lobbyists and corporate insiders to every environmental and security post... Even if it's a post they spent their career opposing.
Take it to Free Republic. They still swallow this shit and beg for more. Bush could squat on your lawn and leave a steaming pile for you to clean up, and you'd call him a hero for doing it. Nobody else is buying it, though.

These causes have NOTHING to do with the United States. The Constitution that you mention is non existant in their eyes and the people who pupeteer them. Do a little research and you will find out that Bill Clinton never quoted the U.S. Constitution. He quoted from the United Nations Constitution. There is no regard or respect for us or this country. There is only regard for those who are born into powerful families who have sworn allegiences to societies established long ago. They rely on hiding in the open. They rely on nutbags who give the conspirital ideas a bad name and reputation. I will say it again, beleive me or not. Why I am here like an idiot making insane statements and talking shit when I am writer? Because I am geek at heart and I take fun in this guilty pleasure. This is from a draft that is two drafts old, I'm sure that it the writing is in far better shape by now.

Oh, and having a draft isn't a stripping of rights or liberties. There is no where in the constitution that it says "No man shall be forced to enter military service". In fact, the original model the founders had in mind for a national army was that it would be kept at an extremely small size except in times of war, when its ranks would be bolstered as needed by whatever means necessary. Not that I'm endorsing a draft or anything.

Can't honestly judge who is worst ever

    by spastic jedi

You simply cannot judge who is the worst President ever.
Every President has it's haters, and unfortunately, we live in a time where people can bash and hate and hide behind the anonymity of the internet.
How many people were able to voice their hatred for LBJ? And LBJ had JFK, RFK, and MLK assassinated and continued to keep waging war in Vietnam. I'm willing to bet that if the internet existed among the general public, at the time, LBJ would have been seen as the worst President ever.
Nixon is seen as one of the worst, yet without Nixon, we would have had no trade with China, which was huge to our economy and theirs.
The current Bush is seen as one of the worst, but he is hailed unanimously for his work with AIDS in Africa. He also has had the most culturally diverse administration in American history, something that if he were a Democrat he would have received MUCH more praise for.
My vote for worst ever would have to be LBJ, that guy is linked to three major assassinations of beloved political and social leaders, plus he did nothing to stop the Vietnam war, a completely senseless war where we lost literally 12x the amount of Americans we have lost in Iraq.
Bush would be a close second, but since he is the standing President he is easily the most hated at this time, but worst ever? Come on, read some real history and get some perspective.

    by zoefan

Thanks for speaking the truth...or at least a closer version to it. All the movies you mentioned were flops for the fact they were Ultra-Left Wing and Anti-War. I truely believe if Black Hawk Down would come out now it would be a bigger hit than it was in 2001. This is because our military is portrayed in a good light in that movie. People can hate Bush as much as they like...as long as they have the facts. That's what most people are sorely missing. True facts, as opposed to opinions that is tried to be passed over as fact. EXAMPLE: Bush lied about WMDs. Not a fact. FACT: Bush screwed up huge based on faulty intelligence given to him by not only our country, but Russian, Canadian, Italian and British intelligence (though Saddam later admitted when we caught him to wanting to initiate his WMD program back up). I do too much reading to just sit back and read what's posted on this TB without putting down the facts or at worst something a whole lot closer to it.

To add to what ZoeFan has posted: Saddams own generals thought Saddam had the weapons. That speaks volumes as to why the information was wrong by everyones intelligence communities. FluffyUnbound = FascistMoron

    by dirkbelig

What is it with you fascist liberals and your inability to understand that just because someone thinks Dubya is getting a raw deal doesn't mean they consider him a "hero"? Just because I'm against what you're for (i.e. liberal facism, socialism, totalitarian government) doesn't mean I'm for what you're against (i.e. Bush).

Other than taking the fight to the Islamofascists and cutting taxes to get America out of the Clinton recession, I can't think of much, if anything, that Dubya has done that's much good. I didn't vote for him in 2004 (voted Libertarian) because he was exploding the size of government in ways that fascist Dems could only dream of with his accomplices in the Stupid Party (i.e. GOP). There was a time when Republicans opposed this sort of crap and rode to power in 1994 with Newt Gingrich leading the way in order to cut back on the socialism. Today, the GOP is "Dem Lite" and have totally pissed-off REAL conservatives.

What the fascism-loving liberals here (and at Digg and Daily Kos) are spewing are lies and slander. You useful idiots are so consumed by Bush Derangement Syndrome that you imagine that you're living in a police state when we clearly aren't. Our borders are unsecured because Dubya thinks Baby Jesus will return as a Mexican anchor baby or some such nonsense. He restricted free speech with his pal McCain with so-called "campaign finance reform". He has busted the budget trying to show how "compassionate" he is with our money. He's been a typical DEMOCRAT except that the Dems have gone so far to the extreme fascist Left that he (and McCain) look conservative in comparison. Hell, Stone's hero JFK would be called a "neocon warmonger" by today's fascist liberals.

"71% of the public hate Bush"? WRONG! 29% approved of his JOB PERFORMANCE. You can't spin stats to mean what they don't. I don't approve of his performance, but I don't hate him like you terminal BDS sufferers to. I don't think this so-called "war" is being run right either. A real war would've been over by now. This bullshit "compassionate warfighting" crap that Dubya is doing has our brave soldiers riding around waiting to get blown up and afraid of being charge with war crimes for daring to shoot back. It's pitiful that the poisons of fascist liberal brainwashing have sunk in so deep that WWII - which saw us nuke two Japanese cities and firebomb Dresden - is called "a good war", but if there is a single collateral casualty today, it's time to surrender, run away, and try everyone in government at Nuremberg.

Instead of focusing on Dubya REAL failures, you maroons live in a hysterical fantasy world in which Keith Olberman tells you what to think and then shriek like magpies in an effort to silence reasoned voices. You are more concerned that a terrorist be able to plot your deaths in private than that you stay alive. Liberalism is a suicidal ideology based on a delusional belief that if you bend over and grab your ankles for every brute, you'll be loved. No, you won't. You'll just get fucked in the ass. Fortunately, there are still a few people dedicated to protect your worthless asses from your own suicidal tendencies. Be thankful for us sane folks. We're keeping you morons alive.

W could certainly backfire on Stone, a la Farenheit 911.
The sad thing is, Stone is capable of much greater films. He should return to his roots, imo, and look at Vietnam again ('write what you know', I suppose).
I could also see him doing something worthwhile about the Bay of Pigs fiasco, or the death of Marilyn Monroe, for example.

    by zoefan

I happen to know what is happening in our "contry". A lot of countries dislike America. However they seem to still buy our goods and trade with us. A lot a county's seem to say a lot of bad stuff about America. Yet what action are those countries taking...NONE. They just talk. We as America don't just talk, we take action. Would you prefer that we just sit back and let other countries destroy each other?

    by batman begins sucks ass

I really really do not expect anyone to beleive that. I brought up the fact only to prove a point. But as for Gore? He is part of the machine ofcourse and this machine has found a way to exploit what they are calling Global Warming. Part of this reason is to impose a world wide "Carbon" tax (again..for times sake please google). The Carbon tax is one of many gross intrusive monetary gaining systems to come out of the "Global Warming" scare. As for Chuck Hagel...I don't know to much about him other than if my memory serves me correctly he will retiring from the senate when his term is up. There was talk of him running for the Republican Party as a presidential candidate but I think that was put to rest and he has announced that he will not be running. I guess the real powers at work did not see much in him.

I am not just speakin of people across the pond who talk badly about the US because when you do go abroad you do find without a doubt that they (people from other Nations) have a strong disregard for the US. So ofcourse they will have nothing good to say. But you do have to weed through those and find the ones that do have things that are informative to say and are insightful and speak to some semblence of truth. Imagine that.. a journalist speaking of truth. ahah. About us taking action against other coutries Zoe, that my friend is a discussion that is about as complex as the death penalty and abortion.

Unfortunately for my war mongering friends, policing the globe and initiating pre-emptive attacks on sovereign nations actually makes us LESS SAFE. How long can we expect the rest of the world to stay off our backs? How long until they feel that our recklessness makes us a threat and part of an "axis of bad guys", ourselves? Quit kidding yourselves.

But you have to be aware of the bad shit that is happening to your freedoms everyday as these people in power continue to gorge power from what remains of our Republic. We are heading towards a unified monetary system just as Europe has done. Euro anyone? This new system will be spearheaded by the joing of us and these other two contries to form the NORTH AMERICAN UNION. Google that and swallow it.

with the point that railing against bush is not, and never was, "brave" or "courageous". Especially in the realm of Hollywood, this wasn't so much taking a risk as it was like shitting a golden egg.

For the record, I'm not a Republican, I don't support Bush, and I think Obama would make a fine president (though I don't think I'll be voting at all). The only thing that gets my goat is any kind of wild-eyed political screeching about how the other side is a) evil b) stupid or c) Nazis. In that respect, this movie will blow, based not only on the juvenile script we've been offered, but because itself will offer no unique or fair insight into the current president. In all likelihood, it will end up a piece that uses so-subtle-they're-obvious jabs at the president while making pretending to display that he is a "complex man."

Well obviously. Oh, and this movie is fictional crap. On a related note, I want one AMERICAN CITIZEN to tell me where THEIR civil liberties were MATERIALLY VIOLATED and I will give them a cookie and vote for Obama. The fanciful reduction of our civil liberties is a joke. It's nothing but fear mongering. I've yet to speak to someone who could answer my above criteria satisfactorily. Meanwhile, in the REAL world, we have a visable torrent of propaganda masquerading as entertainment constantly flowing out of Hollywood. If there was a shred of censorship in this country, do you think Oliver Stone would be able to get this movie made? Everything from Inconvenient Truth to Thank You For Smoking to Stop Loss to Rendition to Valley of Elah to Sicko to Manchurian Candidate (remake) to Lions for Lambs comes from the same exact political point of view and I've yet to hear of one creative person from any of these films being thrown into the Haliburton stockade. The worst torture these films and their backers have had to suffer is the lack of butts in the seats. News flash: most of America finds the repetitive, and patronizing, message if not wrong, then certainly preachy. And it's pretty boring being preached to by multi millionaires while paying $20 to get a shot at "butter flavoring" at a real theater. I'll save my money for The Dark Knight.

The hinderance in mine or your daily life happens when you least expect it. It happens when you seek to obtain something or are obtained for something that you may or may not have done. My point is this...we are very limited in what it is you think we can do in this country. For instance did you know that you really do not own anything in this country because your property belongs to a corporation? Do you want to know what that corporations name is? How about THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? I bet you did not know that did you? THE GOOD OLE US is a corporation...LOOK IT UP. It's a fact. And can you guess who the accountant is for the US Corp? That's right...The IRS. And who does the US Corp borrow money from? That's right...The Federal Reserve Corp who is in controlling power with the Bank Of England which was taken over by the Rothchilds during Napoleans war. Want me to keep going? You have to start digging in and start connecting the dots my friend. You are right when you said "the government was already doing it."

    by inhopelandish

you cant judge a film by the first five pages of a screenplay thats out-of-date.

jesus... go read the first five pages of 'Good Will Hunting'... it reads terribly

judging by what we've read... we still cant judge this project at all yet.

the script is two drafts old, i honestly think, in a project like this the dialouge, as it is on paper, is going to be the least of your concerns considering they'll most likely continue to re-shape it up until right after the scenes are SHOT.

look at the talent on board. Thank God they're not as dumb as you folks and can see past the words on the page or else this film might never be made.

I have no problem with Stone trying to portray the bush administration as, by the looks of it, real people and not just an over-dramatised and "serious" version of how they're portrayed in supposed "Tell all books" and a bias media... thats very ambitious of them considering its usually never done in film.

I love the idea of seeing that image of Bush walking out onto that baseball field and feeling home.

I like the idea of a conversation like that in the white house... it puts the players in the drama at a more personable level (you honestly think that scene will have the same DIALOGUE as it does now when it comes out? give me a break...)

The idea of exploring his frat days is fascinating... and I dont care how brilliant you are, you could be fucking Francis Ford Coppola and ANY frat scene, truthfully and honestly written, is gonna read bad on paper...

get a life you guys... wait till you get more info on the project before condemning it... there are some good ideas and good talent here...

you honestly talk like a bunch of idiots sometimes.

You did not answer one single question directly in other then vague tongue and cheek, or otherwise as many words with no specifics or direct response. We can talk maybe's, if's, could's, mights, oh my. until we are blue in the face. ....and he's still one step ahead of you, by the fact that he has indeed scrutinized the facts that point to the only available conclusion: that there is indeed a threat to our liberty and way of life. How are you "working within the system?, when you cant even accept the fact that the "Patriot" Act is unconstitutional and un-American? We were told it was for terrorism, but look at Elliot Spitzer. The Patriot Act was used to take him down, and he may be a whore-monger, but last I heard thats a far cry from being a "terrist".

The "Patriot" Act isnt for terrorism. Its for you and me. Everything "batman begins sucksass" said is accurate. Except for the part about "batman begins". He advised you to do your homework, but apparently youd rather stand around posturing, and making excuses for not having the spine to admit that the nation we all love is fast becoming a panopticon.

I am a libertarian Republican, [which means I am a TRUE Republican] and I hate Bush precisely because he stands for "facism [sic], socialism, totalitarian government". You're either too much of an idiot, or too much of a bloodthirsty cocksucker, to realize this. I completely discount the tax cut, because it was entirely financed with deficit borrowing, which means we'll pay for the fully amortized cost of that debt in future taxes. That means that of the two things about Bush you say you like [the tax cut and his desire to exterminate Arabs] we can just dismiss one of them out of hand. That leaves us with only the war. And if you are saying you don't like anything Bush has done, but still support him because you love the war, well - that says all we need to know.

The disparagement between the conservatives and liberals...

    by industrykiller!

on this site is unbelieveable. If you were going by talkbacks (I know scary but bare with me) and talkbacks alone as a consensus point, it would be absolutely inarguable to anybody but the completely insane that conservatives comparatively come off as madmen in their opposing posts to the liberal argument. It's absolutely frightening to see what comes out of the mouths of conservatives like USS Cygnuss and Krack. They never have a point, they have a focus of hate that they just beat on using their words like a baseball bat. What they don't understand is how impotent their wrath sounds, the proverbial baseball bat seems made by nerf. I mean for God sake their are guys here who genuinely support George W. Bush. I don't think that a bigger red flag for a huge character flaw can exist today.

has got to be the funniest most meaningless non-sequitor that conservatives have randomly attempted to throw into the public lexicon simply because they like the way it sounds. The lack of apparent understanding of either term is breathtaking in it's ridiculousness. It couldn't be more of an oxy moron if you threw the word "conservative" in front of it. Really good wordsmithing there gentleman. You scholars are really fighting hard to break the uneducated redneck stereotype.

    by finky089

Guys, I'm going to re-post part of SamSquanch's coherently written post from the other Oliver Stone TB. Please take a moment to read it, won't you? "You can maintain your conservatism and disagree with the war. It's ok. American politics are resilient enough to handle a bit of counter-intuitive creative thinking....No matter how you slice it, this war is bad for us.

"Ultimately conservatives are conservative because they have something to conserve. Well, this war is swiftly stripping us of everything we would want to conserve as a world power, as a beacon of democracy, as a wealthy nation, and as a civilization. It's a mistake, a blunder, a wrong turn. We've made them before, don't worry, our collective manhood won't shrivel up and disappear the instant we admit we're fallible. The test of real strength and resolve now is actually having the balls to own up, take responsibility, and turn this ship around before we smash into the iceberg our 'leaders' and the neo-con punditry (not to mention talkbacker apologists like cchhrriissm) are convinced isn't there. While they're busy re-arranging the deck chairs, we should be taking over the engine room." A-frickin-men.

I posted this in the other W talkback

    by samsquanch

But I figure it belongs here as well.

At the risk of stepping between this shitstorm, all I have to say is, If you're a conservative, a real conservative, (not a neocon bootlicker), and you're feeling conflicted about Bush and the Iraq war, just remember there's another way to look at this.
The most frustrating thing for me is reading an otherwise rational, fair-minded post that is just screaming with that internal struggle- you know the one- when your values are totally at odds with what you can see with your own eyes. Bush does not represent conservative American values. He represents a rogue, radical element of conservatism that is no longer conservative at all. The neocons are an extremist group, the equivalent of the radical left, and just as loony.

I lean conservative in most things, although I won't ever completely align myself with any predetermined ideology, (I'd rather think for myself) these days I consistently find myself agreeing with liberals when it comes to the Iraq war. Not all liberals, mind you, but Fluffy's posts have been particularly correct. I'd rather agree with my conservative brethren, to be honest, but these days, even the smart conservatives seem to be twisting themselves into increasingly painful-looking intellectual pretzels in order to accommodate the pretense that we're not failing in Iraq in every way that matters.

I'm just here to make a suggestion: You can maintain your conservatism and disagree with the war. It's ok. American politics are resilient enough to handle a bit of counter-intuitive creative thinking. In fact, its not really that counter-intuitive, if you take Fluffy's argument about the cost effectiveness of the war. I've tried to justify this occupation a hundred different ways to myself, but nothing ever works. No matter how you slice it, this war is bad for us.

Ultimately conservatives are conservative because they have something to conserve. Well, this war is swiftly stripping us of everything we would want to conserve as a world power, as a beacon of democracy, as a wealthy nation, and as a civilization. It's a mistake, a blunder, a wrong turn. We've made them before, don't worry, our collective manhood won't shrivel up and fall off the instant we admit we're fallible. Nolan fluffers

    by mattmanreturns

See, for me, Burton's and Nolan's versions came at perfect times in my life. I was 10 when I saw Batman, and it rocked my world. I didn't actually know much about Batman, so it didn't matter to me that it deviated. I have since become a rabid Batfan THANKS TO BURTON. So, I went to Nolan's movie much older, much more mature, and with a greater knowledge of who Batman is, and it nailed the character. However, I'll always love the original. How can anyone not like Jack's portrayel of the Joker? It's iconic. And Keaton was a damn fine Batman when he was in that suit. I think Bale is a better Bruce Wayne though, if that makes sense. At any rate, I'm happy to have both versions of Batman.

Bob Geldof credits GW Bush with channeling a lot of badly-needed aid to Africa, something he doesn't get much credit for because that small bit of good is so badly overshadowed by the corruption, secretiveness, mismanagement, arrogance, incompetence, and subversion of the constitution that have been the hallmarks of his administration.

This president - along with a lackey GOP congress for six years and a weak-kneed Democratic congress for two - has redistributed from the poor to the rich upwards to $3 trillion while needlessly spilling the blood of thousands of Americans and upwards to a million Iraqis, sending hundreds of thousands of jobs overseas, and quite possibly plunging the nation into the Great Depression 2.0.

Stone's indulging in fiction as history...again.

    by sithtastic

Having slogged through yet another ad hominem fest of a Talk Back here, I have to say more has been said (though little really thought of) the president. Given that this isn't National Review or New Republic or for that matter the Nation, I suppose I'd expect that. Yet I'm stunned at the real lack of thought to the script itself. Having read the four pages I have to say it adheres to every worst cliche of the president I hear from the Left. For the record, it was David Frum who came up with the "Axis of Evil" line which cost him his job as it was largely riddiculed. The rest is the frat boy stereotype that has allowed the president to be underestimated for the duration of his political career.

    That Slate.com review.

    by bizarrojerry

Slate's review makes the movie sound even worse. It's kind of a shame that someone with the power and resources of Stone, who could do all kinds of research and interviews, put out a movie about what the people who don't like George Bush THINK he did and said and thought. This whole movie just seems completely pointless. Bush isn't running for president again. It's so biased it's not going to get some people to not vote Republican in November, and people understand that McCain isn't Bush. This is as insightful as an SNL sketch or a Bill Maher joke about GWB. On top of all that, the two choices for titles are "Bush" and "W"? Both pretty lame sounding. And one will cause trouble by confusing people trying to rent porn. Oh, GEORGE Bush. Incidentally, if you make a less biased film about this guy, and it turns out mostly negative, fine. But this script is not informing anyone of anything, or giving any insight, from what I can tell. Granted, I'm basing this on a very short review and a couple of pages of the script, but still...

please be excised from everyone's vocabulary? Also can we please stop it with this crap about Nazi's being left wing because they had "socialist" in their name. If a remarkably bovine animal- complete with udders- came up to you and (given that cows can't talk) said "I'm a trampoline" would you think it a trampoline? Titles/ labels are not indicative of the actual nature of something. AnimalBraneBalls is a prime example of this- the name changes, but the vile nature of the beast does not.

    by rbatty024

"Politics and the English Language." I think it will explain some of the confusion over the "Fascist left" debacle.

Speaking of which, has anyone read or seen interviews about Jonah Goldberg's book Liberal Fascism? It is absolutely hilarious. The man has no concept of Fascism and makes the most absurd connections. For instance, because Fascists promoted health in the body and some liberals believe in being healthy...LIBERALS ARE FASCISTS! Or, because Fascists believe in never ending wars and because liberals termed the phrase "war on poverty"...LIBERALS ARE FASCISTS! Anyway, it is a wonderful demonstration of an intellectual lightweight on the conservative end of the perspective. Here's an interview:

    http://tinyurl.com/5z8wej

Anyway, my favorite part is when the interviewer actually quotes Mussolini and Jonah Goldberg criticizes the interviewer for "going to the text." Yes, because textual evidence is a bad thing. Anyway, it's pretty funny for anyone who's interested.

In twenty years, when oil is used up and the food riots are in full swing. When the federal government is quelling dissent with poison gas and assault rifles. When the hanging of liberal traitors is common. When Florida is under water and it's against the law not to belong to the evangelical church. The name of George W. Bush will be revered above all others in our great totalitarian republic.

  • It is rather provocative from a diplomatic point of view and it does sound like something pulled from a comic book, sort of like "The League of Super-Dictators". However, in the long run, the way it trades of the sacrifices of the greatest generation to justify a resource grab and corporate giveaway makes it a slogan of near genius. Right up there with "Climate Change" and "Partial Birth Abortion"

rbatty- I remember reading "Politics and the English Language"

    by samsquanch

Many, many years ago. Its unfortunate that these days, Goldberg's book is flying of the shelf (ok, maybe dribbling off the shelf) and Orwell's book is sitting there untouched. State of the nation. The word of the day is 'syllogism'.

I remember seeing a hilarious clip somewhere of Jon Stewart trying to interview Goldberg, but he was so frustrated by his unrelenting circular logic he simply couldn't handle it. I remember Stewart at one point looking at the ceiling, beyond belief, then saying "That's literally like saying- Hitler had a moustache, therefore men with moustaches are fascists." The interview wasn't aired.

Men like Jonah Goldberg are paid to muddy the waters of debate, to make it difficult for reasonable people who disagree over reasonable points to actually have a civil conversation. Very few people actually believe that liberalism leads to fascism, but many people understand that to promote such an absurd notion (and to actually find enough material to fill a book!) will get people's blood up and stop reasonable discourse. It's a last, desperate attempt by people with no intellectual arrows left in their quiver, so we should be suspicious of whomever raises these types of arguments. They're either blindingly stupid people, or they have an anti-intellectual agenda. Scary on both counts. The best way to deal with both types is to back away slowly and not engage.

Everybody with a binary mindset must get into the CAGE and fight it out until someone screams UNKAL!!!!! That's right homies...it's time for the 1st Annual Battle Royale of the Absolutists!!!! All extreme left and right wingers prepare for WAR!!!!! You have 10 minutes to pick a leader and give your marching orders!! Then it's time for the beatings to begin!!! Put your muscle where your mouth is and stop flapping that pie-hole! If you've ever said "America, love it or leave it!" then you can fight on your chosen side!!! If you've ever compared members of the opposition party as HITLER or STALIN then you can be a grunt in the WAR to end all WARS!!! If you've ever thought, "Those assholes! They hate America first!!" then you too can be a REAL general in a REAL Battle Royale and stop that armchair politicking!!! If you think members of the opposition are NAZIS, or FASCISTS, or COMMIES, or just 'dickheads in general' then you too can join in on the ass-kicking fun! Don't be pussies! Stop barking at each other and start bashing! Personally, I think the Republicans will win because they've got lots of guys with trucks and like that Walking Tall guy and the Democrats have to use up the scrawny psuedo-intellectuals as cannonfodder before they get to the beefy amazonian hairy-pit crowd and the limbs really start to fly! Republicans must dress all in red and Democrats all in blue. Any indecisive purple assholes will be used as targets during the beanbag cannon portion of the show. All spectators get to keep their 3D glasses (with special partisan lenses of red & blue!) plus get a prize based on your partisan loyalty!!! A free bagel toaster for liberals or an english muffin maker for conservatives!!!!So stop pretending you're well read...stop presuming to be intelligent...quit pretending that you know what's going on!!! Only the strong survive and getting all tantrum-y will just get you laughed at and pummeled with rocks and garbage! Learn to swim...learn to fight...fight for the cause! BATTLE ROYALE!!!!!!!

    Thoughts on Jonah Goldberg's LF.

    by sithtastic

For anyone who has actually read Liberal Fascism, Goldberg says within the first 20 pages numerous times that he is NOT calling modern progressives jackbooted stormtroopers bent on genocide but soft of soft-styled, smiling totalitarians. He addresses it as an intellectual movement, rooted in socialist and collective traditions. But just because something is of a socialist left or right does not unmake it socialism. Hence, American conservatives blanche every time they are compared to European based socialist movements of a totalitarian bent, but the fact remains that progressives--not conservatives--of the era of those movements admired both the Soviets and at times the Nazis. This admiration is well documented and I find no waters "muddied" as it were, if Goldberg highlights this. Ultimately though, his book represents a hardcore rebuttal to American conservatives being called "fascist" by far too many in the acdemy and media without any real regard to what that word means.

It is inevitable; at some point America always wakes up from its nap and realizes that it’s time to get back to work and elect Conservatives. By the way, for you Socialists out there screaming about the unequal distribution of wealth…surf on over to IRS.GOV and do some reading. The top 50% of all wage earners pay 97% of all income tax. The Top 25% pay 86%. Which means Conservatives essentially finance your blessed entitlement programs. Somebody call AlGore…’cause that’s an inconvenient truth!

You left out that the top 1% of income earners pays just over a third of all income taxes. And that the bottom 50% of wage earners in America (using wage as the scale) only means about 60 million people, that is a fifth of the population are the bottom "half" of wage earners. Nevermind, I guess America's capitalistic streak only favors those greedy, rich, few who aren't paying their fair share (even though the rich work 5 months a year just to pay their taxes).

Liberals have been trying to refer to themselves as "progressives" since the 50's (at least, that decade is the earliest that I've read literature use the term "progressive" in place of liberal). Progressive was brought in because there is a negative connotation associated with "liberal" in so much of the nation, that the liberals tried to hide behind a new name. Progressive=Liberal, Liberal Progressives is redundant.

Why do you bang on so much about liberals plotting to dominate the world when you people ALREADY CONTROL THE PLANET? I mean honestly! Where in the western world are there governments who could even be described as liberal with a straight face? Where? Every time the left in any country anywhere throws up a credible candidate for anything you bitch and snarl crazy things about a 'Liberal Conspiracy' and proceed to character assasinate out of all proportion. 'His middle name sounds like a dictator!' 'His Pastor said bad things about our country!' 'He's married and another woman sucked his dick!' Wah wah, boo hoo.

Conservatives have a majority in every government everywhere. if they're not in power then they are influencing power by making any politician with even the slightest left wing bent too frightened to espouse their views. You run the corporations that control all our lives. You run the banks, you print the money, you control the Stock Market! You organise religions of all kinds, except for the ones which wear orange robes and pray for peace (those guys you call 'separatists' or 'terrorists' and you burn those suckers). You make it so that important scientific research into curing the worst kind of diseases can never take place thanks to your barmy religious beliefs and powerful lobbies. You own the companies that manufacture the weapons that fall into the hands of criminals. You call yourselves Patriots, Communists, Upstanding Citizens, New Labour, Republicans...whatever, it's all the same thing. How much more power do you people actually need?!

You're clearly an insane ultra-right-wing propaganist, and you're exactly the kind of person we don't need, and we don't want. Note the vast majority of American citizens who agree with me and will be voting accordingly in November. No Child Left Behind IS an unfunded mandate. It could work if it was funded appropriately, but its not. Its just yet another attempt to end public education. (Something the ultra-right-wing had been trying to do for years). I think the shortfall is like, what $250 Million dollars? Where'd that money go I wonder? Oh yeah, the Endless War waged on false pretenses (aka lies). You know, the war we're losing? That one. And then you gotta look at who you're dealing with. I teach in a poverty stricken urban district, and these kids need A LOT of help to catch up with their affluent suburban contemporaries. There is a huge difference between children who grow up in stable affluent homes and broken poverty stricken ones. Kids from the suburbs have a leg up. I agree that both demographics can reach proficiency, and should reach proficiency, but the starving poverty demographic needs more help. Every educator, psychologist, and sociologist agrees. Oh, but thats right, NeoCons don't believe in science or research; its all just gut reactions, propaganda, and religious mythology (in short, the New Dark Ages).
Its interesting that you bring up abortion. Can you help me out here, cause I don't understand your logic. Why is it that NeoCons are so obsessed with birth, but then couldn't possibly care less about the actual human being that results from it? What, you want to force these children to be born into a world of grinding poverty and neglect that your NeoCon policies have created? Thats sick! I mean seriously, you couldn't care less about actual human beings: its as if you want them to suffer. Lets be consistent here, because your whole argument is totally hypocritical. A blob of goo is not a child, a child is a child. And if you REALLY cared about children being born, than you should be extra focused on their lives and making their lives better through education, social services, and the like. Wake up, look around, listen to what people are saying. You're in the minority. The screaming heads will still scream, but nobody is listening anymore. If you want to start a religious dictatorship, go find an island and start one.

Its mainly about Iraq. It seems to me that once you get past all the name-calling and hate speech from both sides of the fence, assuming that the differences are reconcilable and it's not just about hating eachother (don't put it past some people, they just like to take sides and hate the other side for the sake of it) we can all agree that when it comes to some things, we're in it together.

I don't see why conservatives support the war. It's a terrible failure, in every way. For those of you that think that an expression of military might is an end unto itself, how do reconcile the fact that we've borrowed $4 trillion since 2002 from Saudi Arabia and China in order to finance our grand display of power? We're currently spending about $16 billion a month to pay for our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. How is this maintaining our sovereignty? Assuming you believe the current story- that we're spreading the gift of democracy to the beleaguered little country of Iraq, and further- that we're winning (I wonder just how much longer we can stand to keep winning) even if this is true, I for one no longer believe it, is it worth it? Is it worth selling our country to the same societies that are, according to the current wisdom, our ideological enemies? How can we feel pride at the sight of an armed American convoy entering an Iraqi village when we know that the Saudis are paying for it? Are the Iraqis worth it? How is this an expression of sovereignty? how can we be proud of this? How can you defend it as a conservative and a patriot? Are you really so easily manipulated that you'll forget to look at the bill, or recognize the face of the person extending your credit, for the sake of a fucking parade?

At this rate America won't belong to Americans anymore within our lifetime. Imagine if Saudi Arabia or China decided to call in their debt? We wouldn't be able to pay it, and they would own us outright. They won't even have to declare war, and if they did, we'd have no way of financing our defense anyway. So go on, you proud conservatives, you noble patriots, keep banging the war drum and looking down your noses at the cowardly liberals and the pansy democrats. They obviously aren't real men, the poindexters with their calculators and spreadsheets, they don't know what it is to be a real man, to sit in an armchair and cheer when Bush goes on tv and tells the terrorists to "Bring it on."

Be a real man, a real conservative, and a real patriot, grow some balls and demand the end of this fucking idiotic war, before we're all speaking Chinese or Arabic. Fools.

I don't know about that. Our foreign debt can easily be used as leverage (we don't have to pay them back as long as we don't expect foreign gov's to continue financing our deficit spending). What I don't understand, from a economic perspective, is why non-export based economies (ie, not China, Japan, South Korea, etc) would buy our bonds. Or really, even China for that matter. Japan and South Korea are developed enough to where it's against their interest to devalue their currencies vs propping up the dollar, China is in a position where the benefits outweigh the costs. But still, China has lost about a tenth of their reserves due to the downward pressure on the dollar in the money exchange markets (which is good for America; people seem think that a strong dollar is good just because it is "strong," economics disagrees).

The reason half of the Iraq War has been financed via deficit is political. Bush can ask for half the money to be on the record, which is very, very small by Congressional Budget standards; hence, doesn't carry enough political juice to justify the Dems making a fuss about.... then "suddenly" demand the other half in emergency spending (aka deficit spending), making the Dems look like heartless, traitor, against the Troops, bastards if they don't fork it over.

You obviously understand more about geoeconomics than I do, but I notice that you don't outright disagree with my main point. Liberals always point to the fact that since the Clinton years, we went from a surplus to the largest national debt in history. Personally, I don't attribute that to Clinton, but to the tail end of 60 years of the American dollar being considered the economic standard by which to borrow against. This is no longer the case. I wonder how long it will take for us to realize that 60 years of being the top of the food chain is now over, but that we're still operating as if it were. We've inherited a sense of luxury and entitlement which has made us soft, and pushed us into a habit of always believing that things will work out in the end, if we just keep spending and throwing good money after bad. in this context, dismissing war expenditures as 'not so expensive' seems a little old fashioned, if not worse, a further example of the false sense of security we've found ourselves in. I might be a bit chicken-little-ish in my doomsday predictions, but even my limited understanding tells me this is a dangerous road, and since I no longer believe the war in Iraq is serving American interests, even a little over-budget is too much, and debt in the trillions doesn't seem like a small problem, no matter how you slice it.

Anyway, I respect your knowledge, and please, please, tell me I'm wrong. If we're in Iraq to secure the last real currency in order to keep America running, I can maybe live with that, as fucking evil as it is, but don't tell me the war in Iraq is worth anything if it means we're hastening the end of our world as we know it.

You don't even know the half of it when it comes to American debt, it's SO, SO, much larger than is reported and a whole other issue. Surplus/Deficits are another story. Last 30 years simplified is: Reagan inherited massive inflation, the Fed's anti-inflation advice worked much faster than expected (just 2-3 years), meaning all the inflation adjusted tax income the government expected never materialized, and when running for reelection, Reagan could not raise taxes for political reasons, hence the Reagan deficits. Clinton inherited economic growth and drove down military spending to an unsustainable level to get his surpluses. Bush inherited a economic downturn and had to reverse 8 years of Clinton's unsustainably low military spending in just a few years (which meant replacing all our smart missiles and replacing the third of the military personnel we lost during Clinton) while financing two wars, increasing social spending, and increasing the government payroll. Initially, his Keynsian policies worked, but due to political pressure, he kept up to Keynesian policies which played a large part in the over-heating of our economy (inflation couple with lower productivity growth and higher unemployment). Keynsesian policies work, but only until prices adjust.

The Iraq War is not a significant source of our debt, and will not become one regardless of how long we stay there. The whole 60 years of reserve currency status has to due with the Bretton Woods agreement and the dollar's stability vs other currencies. American still accounts for just over a quarter of the globe's GDP, we aren't in any mortal trouble. But, unless we either raise taxes to an unacceptable level (both politically and economically) or reign in our social spending, our debt is going to drive the dollar down, and right out of reserve currency status.

    On a somewhat optimistic note

    by stevie grant

We can grow our way out of debt, as long as Congress adheres to a multi-decade plan. Which isn't likely. Currently, national debt, B, [defined as Bonds(at time t)=Bonds(at t-1, ie interest) + deficit(at time t) + misc.(various loans that aren't actually counted as debt via accounting practices)] over GDP, that is B/GDP, equals 0.368 in 2007. If we can keep our debt from growing, our economic growth will bring that ratio down to more acceptable levels in the next couple decades. But, seeing as how the three Presidential hopefuls never even mention out debt, this doesn't seem likely.

So is this the crux of the left vs right debate?

    by samsquanch

Social spending vs military spending? It's an honest question, I know that text can sometimes be difficult to interpret, I'm not being sarcastic. If it is, and that it all boils down to whether you believe in sustaining a military budget at the expense of a social one within our borders or vice versa, I guess the real question is- which of these policies truly supports Americans and American interests? Do you think there's a correlation between Clinton's favoring social spending at the expense of military spending and the mess we're in now? Or was Bush's extreme reversal of that a goal in and of itself, with the tail wagging the dog?

I guess I simply refuse to believe that a country like the US can't manage both, even though it seems like a difficult test to point to a time in history when that was the case. Also, I don't trust the Neocon administration, I think they're manipulating conservative values to their own ends, and that paying lip-service to traditional conservatism is a method by which they keep us sedated while they rob the house. I don't think they represent my interests, I don't think they represent the interests of anyone unless you're in the top .00001 percent of the country's wealthiest.

I guess my point is, not all social spending is wrong, America has always been somewhat liberal in that regard, and the same argument goes for conservatism and military spending. A common balance between the two is what the country is all about. I see the numbers, I watch the news, I listen to Bush talk, and I can't help thinking that this is not what we're about, something is deeply wrong. It transcends right vs left bickering... I wonder what it really is.

the Bush tax cut was aimed at small businesses, not the Rockefellers, hence it boosted employment. It meant an extra 30-80 thousand for many business, hence funds for an extra employee or two. Also, I don't care how much money a person makes, having to give 40% of it over to the government is completely unacceptable to me. As for military spending, here's the breakdown along Presidential lines as percentages of GDP: Pre-Vietnam JFK - 9.3%, Carter (1979) - 4.7%, Reagan (1980) - 6%, Bush (present day) - 4%. I personally believe our military spending is entirely too low. Our military is still to a large degree geared to fighting Russia in Europe, not urban combat, rebuilding, or maintaining the peace. If we just devote a tenth of our economic growth (seen in the gov's tax income) over the next decade, we can double our defense budget. We don't have to choose between defense and social spending.

If you're wondering where I'm getting my info from, most of the figures I've listed have come from a class I'm taking over American Economic Policy, taught by Martin Feldstein (one of the top 10 economists in the world, Economic adviser to Reagan, economic consultant to Clinton, President and CEO of NBER, and the inspiration for Mr. Burns from the Simpsons, though I've never understood why) and Jeffrey Liebmam (another very famous economist who is currently working for the Obama campaign). Their debates are enlightening, to say the least.
