A Very Slightly Different TRANSFORMERS Trailer From Japan!! Bay And Spielberg Speak Japanese!!

Published at:  Jan 03, 2007 11:40:46 AM CST

Merrick here...

YouTube has posted a Japanese promo for the TRANSFORMERS movie.

It's extremely similar to the trailer we got a few weeks ago, except there's a fleeting new image or two of robots in actions...notably Scorponok (wasn't Scorponok an 80s hair band?). Bay and Spielberg also appear in an on-screen intro...

    Big $$ not in US

    by modern-artifacts

For what it is worth, the big money for flims is not in the US, but in the foreign markets. Because of that, there is an increasing focus and catering to those markets. This ad is a perfect example of that. The personal message from Bay and Spielberg is a very Japanese-style approach to advertising. Notice that they talked mainly about visual effects and spectcle rather than story - again, catering to the Japanese and other foreign markets.

I think the ad was very savvy.

    by ridge

The American trailer was superb, it built tension, hit all the right notes, it built fear. The japanese one is amazing, the two extra shots of the robots and some other things totally change the kind of trailer it is. This one screams "GIANT MOTHERFUCKING ROBOTS KICKING THE SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER!" and that's DAMN well what Michael Bays gonna deliver.

    Modern-Artifacts is right.

    by orbots commander

Two recent examples, one good movie and one terrible: Casino Royale and The Davinci Code. Both movies did respectable business in the United States which would classify them as big hits though not outright blockbusters; but if you look at the foreign grosses, Casino Royale made somewhere in the range of $500 Million and counting, making it the highest grossing Bond movie, and Davinci Code made a stunning $800 Million worldwide, thereby launching a Dan Brown novels to movie franchise a la Grisham and Clancy.
The big money IS in the foreign grosses and DVD. A U.S. theatrical movie release is becoming more of the marketing campaign prior to the foreign distribution and the DVD release.

...the Japanese version of the film took some liberties with the dialogue during the dubbing process, using that to change the story (assuming it's still intact) that people are so worked up over fromt he leaked script. I'd be curious to see a subtitled version of the Japanese cut of the film in proximity to the U.S. release just to see what it comes out looking like. Oh, and you will respond with "here," which will be understood to stand for "Here I am, rock you like a hurricane"...like the Scorpions have done before you.

Yeah, the son should have died but by then, well, it was over and I went to bed. If Transies will be like this, it's gonna rock. Because if it ends being stupid is because the source is no diferent. Like the FF movie: is based on 1963 comic book characters! Transformers is based on goddanmed toys, so what do u expect, The Godfather with giant robots?

Dont get me wrong, I´m no Michael Bay fan, but I bet that, like the "James Blond" film everybody was pissed about, every pissed off Transformer fan who is bictchin about it now will be paying a ticket to see it.

    by just pillow talk

kinghenryVIII - I agree with you that while they were running, it was some pretty good shit. It would have been better if the kid was with them when they went down to the basement, Tim Robbins kills him immediately, Tommy kills Timmy immediately, and then they start running again. That scene just killed the momentum of the film. I thought Lost in Translation was a snorefest. I just couldn't get into it.

    by drtobiasfunke

There are more robot related animes, comics, videogames, etc than anything else in that country. Not that I blame them either, but robots are cool. Does anyone remember that short cartoon where bambi (or something like bambi) is just minding it's own business when Godzilla's foot stomps it? We'll have the same premise, but with Dakota screaming, the kid looking all rebellious, and then Godzilla's foot stomping them. Carry on with the rest of the movie with Tommy boy running for his life. Exclude the basement scene completely now.

On Armageddon and War Of The Worlds, &c.

    by dollar bird

So, the clincher is that those two guys compared this movie to 2 of their own—ones that I have mixed feelings about.

Okay, I have no mixed feelings about Armageddon. That movie had so many cuts and camera jumps that I surprised it didn't cause epileptic fits. Not to mention it so was sooo heavy-handed.

Now War of the Worlds, I liked up until Tom Cruise and his daughter got caught by the tripod and he was sucked into the sphincter w/ hand grenades. The move was all great scenes with lots of tension (I even didn't mind the basement scene) and then they had to make it an action movie with the dad being some big hero instead of a survivor (which was more compelling).

So, we have 2 movies—a horrible, ham-fisted editing nightmare, and a movie that dropped the ball in the last 1/2 hour—and this is what Transformers is going to be like. All glitz and no substance. Not that I wanted this movie to be Citizen Kane or Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, but it would have been nice if Transformers had something more than "Did you see those burning, tanks flying?!!". And I swear if this movie features Earth-gadgets turning into little robots with Megatron's magic MacGuffin, I'll puke.

    That trailer

    by inwosuxred

is like every South Park episode that mocks big budget blow hard movies. A penis train falls from the sky. Scenes of TV news explaining to us what we just saw, war room scenes where they explain to us what we just saw and then had explained to us by the news program. Then the cardboard cut-out characters will explain everything again. Then some long and drawn out scenes of soldiers getting ready and everything being all tense. Then someone will outrun a car or out jump a fire ball. The best things about Transformers were the designs, but only some of them (like Prime, Soundwave/Ravage, Devestator, etc), the distinguishable personalities of the robots and the internal conflict amongst the bad guys. Everything I've seen and heard suggests all of those things have been removed and replaced with things that are less good.

Dude, the simple answer would be that they cut these introductions for countries all over the globe. Another simple answer would be that there were no Japanese people in the 80s cartoon. Since there is a French version of this trailer, do you think one of the main characters should be French? Well, MetalWater? You don't need to have Japanese Actors in an American movie in order to promote it to Japan. Titanic didn't, Pirates doesn't, Spiderman doesn't, Batman Begins doesn't, Fantastic Four doesn't.

When i watch Asian films, i'm not looking for Americans to be in main roles unless it has to do with us. Transformers the movie takes place in America jack. Not freakin Japan.

    Japanese Torture Porn

    by godoffireinhell

is the best in the world IMO. They are having literally TONS of the stuff, both in comics (manga), animation (anime) and live action movies. I strongly recommend checking out the works of Waita Uziga, Suehiro Maruo and Shintaro Kago for the drawn torture porn stuff. Give the animes BONDAGE GAME and MANIAX a watch, too. Just remember that they are not available outside Japan - for fairly obvious resons!! As for live action Japanese torture porn, most people already masturbated to the awesome GUINEA PIG series of film. But quite soon we will see the US release of Daisuke Yamanouchi's RED ROOM and RED ROOM 2! Don't miss 'em!

Transformers wasn't theirs. It was a repackaged idea that spawned from random japanese toy companies and didn't get real big till it hit the U.S. with the TV show and toyline.
Transformers were and still are a much larger franchise in America then Japan. They used Japanese Animators(limited animation) because it's cheaper but so does a lot of companies these days.
Transformers makes more money in America and has a larger fanbase here.
Japanese will go see it with or without japanese actors. Believe me.
It better do more then the Animated movie whos boxoffice totals floats around 5 million. So sad.

    ~Nyumon sono ichi~

"Desu" is often translated as the b-verb is, am or are. But "desu" really doesn't have any meaning by itself. It is simply attached to nouns to create a sense of politeness or distance in speech. Japanese will use 'desu' with their superiors or people they don't know.

Seriously guys, if you are going to try and spell the Japanese language...its "Desu" not "dess" or "des" I can tolerate testosterone driven male flamers, who feel the need to slam each other just to prove who has the bigger "pee pee" but i cannot take people seriously who do not at least spell check before using another language.

If you are going to make fun of bay for coming across as an ass in the promo... by repeating his use of the word, at least get it right, then you wont come across as an uncultured ass.

Watashi wa nihonjin desu..... i should know how the language works, its insulting.

Oh yah, and all this "insinuation" about how Bay and Spielberg are showing no respect to us Japanese as a culture, all because they are not realeasing trailers with any japanese in them, and are not honoring the "creators" is a Load of bullshit.. now you are just "looking" for excuses to bash this film, alot of people come down hard on yackbacker, for speaking his views of the films script and his expectations, but at least he is not using another culture as an excuse to get his "hate on" I personaly think the trailer looks okay, and so do my "japanese" co-workers,brother and sister, and friends. And Mr nice Gaius thank you for showing some honor...some people in the transformers TB's should learn the meaning of the word. I can handle flames, but maybe some consideration and respect to the fact there might be Japanese as well as other cultures in these forums would be nice. And metal, you are an ass, do you live in Japan? come to Tokyo and see how well your debate is recieved, a movie is a movie, and yes we support our countries films very much, but there is alot of excitment here in tokyo around transformers..you are not very well informed and it looks like the only thing you are "good" at is talking out of your ass. Speak for your own culture, do not speak for mine.

i am someone who has no past interest or knowledge of transformers at all, and i am incredibly excited for this movie. it is going to be incredible pleasing to my eyes to watch these things fight, and bay is the best one to give us that. i feel the general public audience will proibably be with me on this one, so it might have been a smart movie for them to change things to make it more real and appealing. just my thoughts.

Also calling Americans in general racist or comparing them to nazi's and then calling people crackers... well you're the racist. Also isn't Tyrese like the main character in this movie and last I checked he isn't white unless he pulled a Michael Jackson since Four Brothers. If you want hate to stop, you need to stop hating first. P.S. Last Samurai rocked the shit. Also Letters from Iwo Jima a movie made by Americans but was in Japanese with an all Japanese cast also rocked the shit. So your crap talk about how Americans don't care just got owned. Go sit down and cry about how Transformers won't be good for you and how the Silver Surfer is too SILVER!

MetalWater - so much of a films success now depends on

    by finky089

its marketing and audience. Per your example, if you take a Japanese made film that is successful and release it quietly without fanfare in the US, of course it's not gonna do shit. Same vice versa. Same for any American Made movie that gets no marketing b/c NO ONE will know about it. But, take something like Crouching Tiger, market it liek crazy and it becomes a "box office success." I'm just saying you can't make such a generalized statement. Peace.

I like to consider myself one of the more moderate "haters". They definitely had to change the designs of some of the robots as they'd have looked ridiculous. A VW Beetle tramsforming into a robot would look completely dreadful. Megatron as a gun would't work. I'm not completely satisfied with the new designs but you can't have everything. The thing thats most disappointed is the script which is truly dreadful. Its a completely by the numbers hack job which will not capture anyones imagination except a 5 year olds. Maybe thats who its aimed at but I was hoping for more. I'm sure the action set peices will be great (its what Bay always does well) but I think a modern audience demands more.

    You know...

    by nonsensical

Ganymede... Bumblebee does look good... in that one posed still image. As in not moving. As in, he's a nice looking fantasy robot that is too busy for movement, but it looks good still. Megatron, still looks like ass. As do the other bots, except for Prime. He too looks fine as long as it doesn't move, but they look fine for robots. Not for Transformers. They don't look like Transformers at all. They look like polished junk bots. They look like reject gobots. They look like freakin' Johnny 5 on crack.

I think the best part of the Japanese trailer was seeing the Japanese text for the Transformers. It's very much the same way Takara has done the copy for the last twenty years. Too bad the US doesn't get the same treatment. We changed the Transformers logo so many times there is no real brand to it other than the name.

In my humble opinion the Japanese will receive this film far better than the US for one simple reason. Variety. The Japanese have had so many variations on the Transformers line over the past twenty years that they are more accepting of changes to the Transformers. They went well beyond the Rebirth episodes. In fact, they ignored them and went onto Transformers 2010, Masterforce, Victory and Zone. In the interim they have also had Gao Gai Gar and Micronauts. They had Beast Wars and were so impatient that they added Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo. After Beast Machines they brought us Transformers 2000. They have had Armada, Energon, and Cybertron as well as several specials that include Robot Masters and Binal Tech. The Japanese market is so diverse in its many incarnations of the Transformers that this will be accepted with little issue.

However, here in the US... we have G1. After that all attempts to keep the Transformers going strong failed until the Beast Wars, and after Beast Machines butchered that we suffered through the chop job for Transformers 2000 and shortly after that the Transformers Armada, Energon, and Cybertron arc did little for the line. Sure, we get most of the toys in one form or another, but we didn't get the video games.

They got TF: Generation 0, and Armada, and they will continue to get more because Transformers there survives and changes as much as their culture does year in and year out. Here, that doesn't work.

Will this film do better overseas. You bet. Will it be the film to beat next year in the US. Not a chance. Too much competition and a deviation that is just far enough from the source material that fans won't like it.

If you think that Transformers will beat out Harry Potter, Shrek, Spiderman, Pirates, (Insert Pixar film here) and even the Fantastic Four, then you really don't understand how well these proven money makers and audience pleasers are going to do.

I'm not even a huge fan of Harry Potter and I'd rather see that than suffer through something that the director and producer have come out and said is like Armageddon meets the modern War of the Worlds. For me that means this film will suck since it's not going to have a story with which to stand on.

Happy New Year to you as well...allthough i am sorry to inform you i am not a "sir" ;)

The Japanese film industry is alittle different from the american, i am currently working for a Tokyo film company, in which me and a partner are trying to bring more japanese films ~based on old manga and anime series~ to American, and North American audiences. But no it is not that common for American filmmakers to cut a "quick" intro and attach it to a trailer for foriegn audiences..allthough on occasion it does happen. In this case i believe the reason Spielberg and Bay did this was to show some respect for the japanese market..this tactic was very diplomatic. They are trying to play on the fact that we japanese like movies with "big special effects" And the truth be told Yack, ~ as much as you might dislike to hear this =P~ armegeddon, and war of the worlds did very well in Japan, wich is why Spielberg mentioned those to movies...very popular here. Which is why "metal" and his cockyass comments were so off, We love disaster films here...and it is not a matter of always taking movies so seriously, ever since Hiroshima, the japanese mindset has always revolved around "bioligical warfare" or "the end of the world" "post apocalyptic" scenarios..look at alot of our anime friend, or manga for that matter...not to mention the fact that alot of our culture has deep american influence, from the punk rock era,to dyed hair, and bubblegum, cowboys, rock n roll, blue jeans..you name it. And this is why metal and his statements are a scapegoat, because our culture devours, anything american...as well as american culture devouring our anime, and martial arts movies, video games, cars, and anything technological in general. After the war our two countries slowly created somewhat of a symbiotic relationship. So i hope that long drawn out explanation brings light to your question. As for your other question..Japanese theater going has been in decline for a number of years. In 1983, ¥186 billion worth of tickets were sold. In 2000, just ¥171 billion worth of tickets were sold. Even worse for the Japanese film industry is that the share of those tickets sold for foreign films has steadily grown, reaching 68% in 2000. So you can see why it is important for as many japanese films to be brought to north american audiences..as for ballpark figures for america, i am not sure of the exact #'s but if i had to guess based on statistics it would be around 8.6 billion just for the last year or two alone. the last was a guess,so do not quote me on that yack.

What more do you want? Are you sniffing glue or paint thinner? Your comments are perhaps the most wildly insane ramblings that i've read on here in a long time; i thought DAMN YOU MICHAEL BAY was a bit weird but man...I'd hardly suggest that Japanese actors in a movie that features a historical event INVOLVING japan, are 'token'.Clearly you are looking for something to complain about. Are you Japanese? Are you one of those insane right wing Japanese people i've been reading about in the news? You know, you're right. I'm all for racial equality so how about this? In the future, i would like ALL japanese movies to feature caucasian characters in the lead. Then, i'd like some studio bigwig to remake Malcolm X or the Martin Luther King biography and we can cast Daniel Craig in the title role; give the white guy a chance to see what he can do.You said Asians don't appear in Spielberg and Bays movies. You've been shown otherwise; don't move the goalposts will ya?

    I cautiously agree with MetalWater

    by immortal_fish

They pioneered the whole giant robot thing. As TF specifically originated in Japan, there really should be some respect paid to them. However, I'm kinda glad they didn't.Take the Bernie Mac character. I'd like to be rawng here, but I'm suspecting he'll either be a younger spin off of Redd Foxx's Sanford character or simply be a flat out racial stereotype. Again, I'm way speculating here, but as I suspect Mac's character will be a stereotype, I doubt it would turn out any different were you to replace him with a Japanese actor. The Japanese tend to be the most insulted by stereotypes than others. It's for the best.BSB, this is your cue to call me a racist, despite how I've clearly outlined that I'm not in favor with any of the above. Note that I suspect Mac's character will be a stereotype, not Tyrese's.Now, MetalWater -- For the Japanese specific export, you're certainly correct that it would be more appealing for them to intercut other actors in Burrlike fashion. However, that costs more money, which would mean less funding for the walking set pieces to beat the snot out of each other. Oh, call them robots if you like, but robots in a robot movie about robots should have more than a collective 12 or so lines in total.TOO HUMAN!!!

    by theallseeingeye

None of the leads were Japanese. Sorry I couldn't help that.Kurasowa didn't cast caucasians in leading roles because his movies were being made specifically for the Japanese market. Spielberg, while he's a globally recognised producer/director, makes movies for Western audiences so he casts western actors. Yes, they do go to asian audiences BUT, the money is made in the west.Kurasowa is held in high regard outside Japan because his movies, while fairly high brow, are entertaining but, like most Japanese movies, are wildly different in style to western productions. It's just not everyone's cup of tea; much like Anime. Spielberg on the other hand, rarely, puts any kind of deeper meaning into his movies. It's pure entertainment and i'm sorry, you don't need to have a racially balanced cast in order to entertain any creed or colour. To be perfectly honest i can't really garner what you are trying to say because it comes across as meaning one of two things, both as ludicrous as the other. You're either saying that a Japanese character should be included because Transformers originated in JapanorYou're saying that a Japanese character should be included because the film will be shown in Japan. In either case, the addition of an asian lead would be utterly pointless. Why don't we cast a chinese guy, a samoan, an idian, a pakistani and a south american indian while we're at it? Let's have a guy from Germany, England, France, Spain, Italy too. Infact, lets have a global cast so we don't leave anyone out. You've already been told, by a Japanse guy no less, that what you're saying is garbage, verging on the offensive.

I've learned how the prequels could have been fixed -

    by just pillow talk

When Obi-Wan chased Zammy into the bar, they should have gotten joyously drunk (no angry drunks please), sloppily sang loud and fun songs (oh susanna maybe?), and danced (not dancing with stars type of dancing), while carousing with equally wild and fun loving drunken women (but not too drunk, a la 40 year old virgin).

    by ricky henderson

They had cut out all the awful political nonsense. I don't give a flying fuck about what the galactic senate does. I don't care about watching the crubmling of a democratic state. And Lucas decided to make all that nonsense central to the story. So when you see Jedis fighting, its not a thrilling adventure--they're just political pawns battling for power. Thats what killed off all the swashbuckling fun from the original films. Hooray for trade disputes!

    by s-mart shopper

the sands were as white as nose candy and little filipino boys frollocked in the glissening water. I could swear I heard some form of inspirational and patriotic music in the background. And for a split second, everything seemed to move in slow motion, right before the hail of gun fire and heat/shrapnel of the explosions. Before I knew what was going on I was surrounded by porn stars or maybe hookers, demanding $9.75 from me because I was there after 6pm. Reluctantly, I gave up the money. They kicked me in the balls and sent me on my way, DAMN YOU MICHAEL BAY!

    by finky089

I'm not saying they should be perfectly symmetrical, just that if the designers wanted to have their robot forms bipedal and symettrical like humans, they could have done a better job of making them look sleek or blocky or whatever the hell people want to see, but what they've come up with for the most part are just sloppy looking. Either push the envelope and come up with something to totally "wow" us or stay a little more faithful to the G1 designs that worked for people before The results with Optimus speak for itself. Where they strayed the least from G1, they have gotten the least negative reactions. Bay says this movie will be like "nothing we've ever seen before". Fine, then why not have your robot designs a little more inline with that idea? The only new ground these desins break are in "ugliness".

Thanks for the tips. I appreciate the insight, but I've read and heard before now. Thanks all the same. As other's have written, and I agree, Mac will likely pull a Nicholson, meaning Mac will play "Mac" himself. Not a surprise by any stretch. This only serves the point I tried to make in my previous post. Yes, Mac's will be a racial identification role, as replayed way too many times throughout Hollowood history. It is tired, overdone, and boring. But for some reason, it sells tickets, which is why it will be done. All said, I have to admire MW's tenacity, given how he posted in liberal infested waters how a certain racial demographic should be represented under certain criteria -- meanwhile being silmultaneously blasted in TB for doing so by such self proclaimed "progressives" themselves. I find this rather interesting. However, MW kind lost me with the whole SW prostitution bit.

    For once Yack...

    by wanna_bannana

Your opinion on the TF designs was warranted and not just a "manish" fanboy complaint ~and i mean that in fond way~ you just need some female perspective to keep you in check once in awhile =P

The Starscream design,is horrible ... when i saw the pictures, i thought " somethings off" and at first thought it was the upper body, but then i realized that the design, if you really look at it yack, resembles a bird, like someone else in the TB said "looks like a chicken" now...even though i still reserve final judgement for my advanced screening in may, and have had next to no problems with the designs and trailer.. i do have a problem with the whole "wait..he is a jet,he can fly,he should resemble a bird" ~notably the small legs, birdlike feet and large upper body~ way of thinking.
It reminds me of something Yasuhiro Nightow, had said to me awhile back when i had suggested for him to let me come up with a strong presentation, to take to paramount to turn his animated series Trigun into a live action movie,~seeing as the series had ended~ he said to me " when someone touches a baby chick that has fell from its nest, and tries to put it back...the mother abandons it, because she feels it is no longer hers" So i actually do understand your dismay over these movies yack, even if i do not fully agree. You grew up with these characters, they bring warm feelings, and you have a fond attachment...and the studios, bay, spielberg, among other hands have got ahold of it and it no longer feels familar. So for the record, i agree with you for alot of it, but i do also think you take alot of it way to personal... and serious, leave the ulcers for the film industry =P

For what its worth, not everyone in here thinks your a pure hater, i have seen you flame on, but have a fair bit of respect for your intelligence, knowledge of film, and debates.

    by phategod1

your opinion of the first movie is our own personally I enjoyed every bit of that movie cept the end I really expected prime to come back at some point but I loved the introductions "some" of the new characters. as far as G1 if it was truly dead then explain the popularity of the masterpiece collection. And of all Transformer Cartoons Beast wars/Beast Machines was the best written. everything after that was crap and If Spielberg himself had said he was making a movie on Transformers and did not actual say "G1" which he did I wouldn't give two shits cause then I would know what they where aiming for more :Robots in disguise, energon crap. But he did say he was basing this on G1, He lied that dreadful script those piss poor designs all prove he lied. I just wonder how you'll react when Paul W.S. Anderson is directing your precious Macross movie with a 80 million dollar budget. and the Veritechs wind up looking like a cross between Johny 5's and Harrier jets.

The entirety of TPM could have been summed up

    by yack backer

in five lines of dialogue, there was no need to make that movie.

Darth Maul could have been used better, that's for certain. How cool would it have been to have a two-on-one with Maul and Jango taking on Obi Wan? And Qui Gon was totally extraneous. THey should have aged Obi Wan a little (by about ten years) from the start. But whatever my nitpicks, they should have had a real screenwriter come in and polish the shit out of those monstrosities Lucas slapped together. No, TPM is not the worst movie ever, but it sure feels like it was...

    Star wars

    by wanna_bannana

The only one i semi enjoyed was ROTS...which i am sure most do out of the prequels, allthough the one complaint i hear alot is the whole "frankenvader" bit,at the end of the movie, in which my arguement has always been " he had his F*&%n legs cut off, and lucas said to hayden for inspiration" okay...so you had your legs cut off, and were badly burned..and it hurts....really,really bad, you follow? oka good, now dont forget it hurts and ou are just learning to walk again, like you never have before...feel vaders pain..become vader..and if you do a good job of that, not only will you get to have no real career after this, but i will remove the old dude that played vader at the end of ROTJ and you will get to hang with the likes of Sir Alec and Yoda instead!...hows that sound?....and....ACTION!!" thats about the depth of his directorial skills. And i do not believe Jake Loyd ruined TPM, lucas did a pretty good job of that when he decided to helm it...and let his kids come up with characters in the movie.

    by yack backer

Luke Skywalker is the real hero of the Star Wars series. Going back and doing the prequels as a way to fill in backstory was wrongheaded in retrospect. They could have definitely benefited from better scripts (and a pulse for fun), but perhaps the whole concept was flawed.

    Star wars ~and~Eragon

    by wanna_bannana

Okay...so i just recently saw Eragon,~not in theatres thank goodness~ and alot of reviews on this site had mentioned how it felt like a complete rip off of star wars...and i personally think that certain reviewers on this site, talk out of their hind quarters far to often...it felt nothing like star wars, and may have had the same "good guy takes on empire with help from rebels"thing going on...but in no way did star wars come to mind.

While watching it i swear i could feel my ovaries curdle, and that the chances of me ever bearing children would be slim afterwards...but that does not mean it had much in common with "A New Hope" aside from what i mentioned above...but i can name a ton of movies that rip off alot of themes in star wars...such is the movie business, and there are far more then people probably even realize.

So do not be decieved by the man! the movie is bad yes, Rachel Weis as the voice of Saphira was awkward, and reminded me of "mia farrow" as the voice of the unicorn in peter. S. Beagles "the last unicorn" but it was by no means a "horrible movie" Dungeons and Dragons was horrible....this was more like having to read a review by he who was "Boll Slapped" it sucks and you cannot fully understand why... but you can live with it.

    by wanna_bannana

the comics/graphic novel, was great but i did not care for the movie. Graphic novels made into movies have not done it for me either, i mean Sin city was a "good" comic and movie, but i never understood what the big deal about frank millers work was, yes i absoloutly believe he is a great artist and that Sin city had some amazing artwork, but the only thing he has done that i truly have been entranced by that he did, was "Batman :year one" the rest has been ..so,so...just my opinion. At least the Sin city adaptation was very close to source material..not the same can be said about "LXG movie" the comic was fantastic, but the movie chewed, i love Alan Moore, and nothing beats the part in the comic where the invisible man gets his hiney brutalized by Hyde...Yah i know not very girlie of me to say...but meh, i have my moments i guess. *scratches crotch and spits*

Wanna - you read the book for Battle Royale . . it is fantastic. I really like the film but the book (as books can) adds all sorts of character expansions. Frank Millers Dark Knight Returns for is also wonderful. As good as Year One for me (and why the hell can't they make a Batman: Year One film). But Mr Miller can be very hit and miss - just take the Batman vs Spawn book. Bloody awful

Yes i have read the book for Battle Royale! And i forgot about "Dark Knight reurns" and i had to stifle an out loud laugh, when you said " Batman VS Spawn" I completely bi-passed that one, and probably for the better. Do you like manga? because i can reccomend some good ones, i am very biased when it comes to manga though especially the "Trigun" series, and almost always reccomend it, because the creator and his wife are friends of mine, and i have been working for a year to get a live action movie brought to the big screen. But i would seriously reccomend anything by Yasihuro Nightow, or of course anything by Osamu Tezuka who most know created "Tetsuwan-Atom" who everyone knows as "Astro boy" There is alot of beautiful manga out there.

    Don Murphy

    by wanna_bannana

After seeing him write countless negative remarks on his site~ and this one~ about tranformers fans, who have expressed their fears on the coming movie. I could not help but be curiously drawn to the video link of him at the transformerscon...and well..Wow...what a weasel. But one thing people need to understand though.. is he is a producer...that should say it all, he has little say and producers are usually gophers for higher ups, in other words he kisses alot of ass, and takes most of the heat, you think Bay or Spielberg would have been so shifty or nervous up there? probably not ,because one, they send people like Don Murphy to handle all the questions and take flack, even though fans would be less likely to lip off spielberg, then someone like Don Murphy, because of the fact he is allready so disliked, from making blatent rude statements about transformers fans opinions meaning jack..i would be seriously suprised if this guy was not taking heat from studio heads or his partner for being such an ass...fans are where the money comes from, and like the one guy said if the movie sucks then no one is going to be seeing it more then once. I personally do not know Murphy ,but he is definatly a spineless ass if he has to hide behind a computer screen in order to talk big...he seemed to have none of his game at the convention, dont think he would have lasted long if he talked the way he did on his boards or in here.

    Geek Gene

    by wanna_bannana

Hey.. its not genetic, its manufactured..when you go to college and film school, there is no greater comfort then spending your down days eating popcorn, bonkers candy, subway and watching re-runs of astro boy and invader zim and digging into your old batch of archie comics..and any true blood archie fan knows that reading an archie comic is accompanied by eating ~PB and J sandwhiches and a coke for me~ I own the complete first and second season dvd box set of fraggle rock , complete with a re-produced copy of the sketchbook Henson used to come up with ideas for the show, have worn out Labrynth staring at Bowie and his massive package, and i still have my dark crystal, ROTJ bedsheets from when i was 7, or how about space-hunter with peter strauss and molly ringwald? i own two copies of ice pirates ~beta and VHS~ and still have my beta machine, intellivision, and an unwrapped copy of the last starfighter...a true geek has nothing to do with genetics, it has to do with the amount of "bonkers, nerds, fizz, cotton candy, pink popcorn, and nasty little bat/ghost/cat wrapped halloween taffies you consumed as a child. And yack..that all ties in with my opinion of transformers...when you were a kid did you care about the story? or did you care about the flashiness and style of the characters...because i sure as hell did not give a woop about the story i just wanted to hold my bumblebee toy,sit on the floor with a bowl of fruit loops and my cabbage patch doll, and wait for an episode with soundwave " i....am...sound...wave" i am willing to fully reserve judgement..bad script or no, all i need is one little ripple of goosebumps in remembrance of those days...and i am set. I will be first in line giggling with glee ,and fitting every stereotype of a japanese schoolgirl.

    dont cry!

    by wanna_bannana

You were one of those kids that cried when something did not go your way no? =P I am sure you have heard the saying "when life hands you lemons ...make lemonade"? everyone has! well shit you crybaby, perk up, sure transformers are iconic, and great fun was had with them, but this is a toyline, a nostalgic look back into our pasts, this is not the future, we are not going to die horrible deatsh if this movie does not meet expectations..there will be many more days after, and each of them will be happy ones. There are other things aside from transformers that are more important, family, friends, good sex, sushi, and sake...of course i was speaking for myself on the last few..but you get my point. Debating is fun, but when it comes down to it, they are only toys and fictional characters....i am as nerdy as it gets, but a true nerd should be able to seperate whats important from whats not, and see that underneath it all, comics are beautiful pictures that have been givin life by the artist, anime, and movies along the same line, and the important thing is not the fictional characters...but the people behind bringing them to life. People are getting insulted over this movie, peoples opinions are being dismissed..or told that they are wrong, there are personal attacks on Bay by people who do not know him as an individual..why? all because people are afraid he is going to botch the movie. Alot of what i have seen in this TB is shameless immaturity by some. I see alot of valid arguements...but they are the same ones made, day in and day out, with no real ground being made. What is the point of discussing, and venting if no progress is made, and you are going to be stubborn and rant all because a leaked script and some toy images, leaked photos and a crappy trailer came out. I spent alot of time reading and approving scripts and trust me friend, not all were easy to read, but you can learn to see the potential in them, battle royale literally read like one long bloodsplatter, but the final movie was very thought provoking, and held depth. Moral of the story is, fun is fun...but life goes on with or without transformers.

Could not have said it better Myself

    by phategod1

I just described a part of my childhood where I was lucky to use my imagination, and therefore have fond memories from the experience. I will encourage my kids to be imaginative and creative too, I think a lot of children are kept busy too much to let that part of their childhood flourish. And that part of my life was over 20 years ago. I've enjoyed plenty of (but never enough of) sushi, sex and sake to bridge the gap to this day, even a little chicken katsu too. No, that's not a metaphor, I really love me some chicken katsu. If you mistook my tone in my previous posts, let me shed new light for you on my perspective. I'm not ranting endlessly about how the world crashing down because of the bastardization of Transformers. Personally, I like to hear other points of view, and I'll share mine to those who are interested in listening. I don't run on the messageboard and yell "Damn you Michael Bay" to the baord at large. I talk to individual TBers. I talk about ideas. And I also want people to know the things I've discovered about this project. I am always conscious of the fact that some don't want to know what happens, so I tag posts "SPOILERS" where appropriate. Listen, part of this silly hobby of being a film geek is being a geek! Let the passion out! Bask in it, and share in the silliness with others who are geeking out the same way. That's the point of these kinds of messageboard-- to vent, to debate, to crack wise and to kill some hours that could have been spent asleep. No universal consensus can ever be reached, especially in a TB. And I disagree, I think a lot of new ground has been made. I've gotten to talk to interesting people like yourself, and hopefully we've all learned how to bring out the best in one another amidst a heated, yet civil discussion of 30-ft robots. Yikes!

in other old news did we talk about how bad cybertron looks on the movie site.

michael bay makes good looking films. and speilberg know how to tell a good fucking story. spielberg is this mans boss. do you not have faith? the transformers changing look fucking wild. the metal clamging and the detail to these things and their movement - i don't know if you remember the transformer in the cartoon could not look the way they did from the vehicles they were. here they are tetailed. even optimus's head has all sorts of seperation sections. true though.... the truck driving down the highway with it's flames really is A team gay. but I've yet to see it on the big screen. and i suspect something will be said about the robots' Earthly interpretation. at least i fucking hope so other wise this film could be doomed to gay in ways we did not expect. but lets not jump to any conclusions... lets just look forward to it and prey to satan that it is perfect

The extended version was an uncomfortable experience for me, not just because of pacing, but because i was not able to get into it and fully watch it at the time, due to other things going on. As for Kou, she has not really done any other bad ass roles, but she has done alot of films that have been acclaimed and garnered her tons of awards. She was in a movie called "go" about a korean school boys struggle to live and love in Xenophobic Japan, as well as a horror movie called " Kakashi" there has also been "Kewaishi" "drive" and "Yomigaeri" saying she is a celebrity here in Japan is an understatement. Tarantino originally wanted her for the roll of "Yuki"

Wanna_bannana, so the early Buzz in Tokyo is positive

    by finky089

I have to admit, I've never really read/heard about what kind of popularity G1 Transformers nostalgia enjoys in Japan. I guess I'd assume that the same populationof kids who grew up with them there would feel similarly to the changes Bay and company have made as those of us in America who have a strong attachment to the G1 characters. Outside of of few film/tv/comics websites and seem to have a user base that is heavily geek-based, I'm not sure what the US buzz is on TF. I know what it is at AICN and the other websites, but not so much "Joe Public". I was in the theaters this weekend and when the TF trailer played, it was kinda quiet afterward. A little chatting...and then I heard a muffled "Damn You, Michael Bay" followed by a few random spots of laughter. Mine included.

    by wanna_bannana

I can do better then giving you a list of websites on the subject of "Hikikomori" there is a brilliant author named " Michael Zielenziger" who wrote one of my favorite books on the subject called " Shutting out the sun : How Japan created its own lost generation" its about Kenji an actual Hikikomori, it is some interesting and rather disturbing stuff.

    hope that helps...

what do you mean "comraderie" finky? i cannot stand colon and yack =P actually i adore them both, they just needed alittle womanly touch to keep them in place =) As far as tranformers G1 popularity in japan..its pretty good ,but i tend to hear more people over here lean towards ~believe it or not~ Transformers :Armada *not me personally* i am a pure G1 fan. But i also went to school in North amercia, and grew up with western culture before moving back to Tokyo. I am not fond of the starscream design that was approved, but i do like Prime, and bumblebee designs, and so do alot of people over here, and there was alot of buzz about the trailer. People need to keep in mind, that one major thing that seperates Our culture from a Western mindset, is that we do not so much dwell on the past as we look to the future...Hence why most of our Anime, manga, and culture, leans towards futuristic scenarios "biological warfare" other dimensions, and alot of Sci-fi. Which is both a good and bad mindset...but most of my friends,co-workers and people i talk to about Transformers are not concerned, about them changing the loved characters designs..in fact alot welcome that leaner, less blocky, more futuristic, wirey look..over the old. ...and instead are concerned wether or not the characters have an inkling of their old personalities. But overall alot of people are excited to see something this visual brought to the screen...lets face it, over here..robots are loved, and there has been a lack of good robot movies....my last favorite personally was robot jocks, but that leaned more towards being a mech movie. Everytime i say "mech" i am reminded of "rifts" god i loved that game!...i mean, psssh, roleplaying is for losers! I think i just ultra nerded myself out in this TB.

and since i am on the topic of "roleplaying" i would love to see a live action film trilogy made out of "werewolf the apocalypse" by white wolf....allthough, it might be entirely better to have it made into an Anime movie series.

I also have a good movie story for you Finky, i was in New york, at the Premiere for Roland and Toby's "The patriot" starring Mel Gibson..and it came to a part where Heaths character asks Mels " dad...how did you know when you met mom ...that you loved her?" in which Mel replies " well...son, i knew...because when i saw your mother...i could barely breathe" and some guy in the audience yells out " THATS BECAUSE SHE WAS SITTING ON YOUR FACE!" suffice to say it was accompanied by alot of laughter, and the guy being escorted out.

I was just about to sign off this TB for good. In agreement with youon the Prime design being "okay". Bumblebee I can live with, but the rest are a huge departure for a G1 fan to get comfortable with. I'm in agreement with Yackbacker (and others) that if the rest of the film had been handled with more care for the property (better script, better execution of the film's plot) it would make the designs (except maybe the heinous Megatron one) easier to swallow. I could probably get by them if the script that I read from last year hadn't been so terrible. Hence my insistence that this film is "Transformers In Name Only".

    Answer From a Bay Hater

    by phategod1

I didn't jump on the Hate Bandwagon till Bay Called it a "Family movie" or till he referred to it as "A movie about a boy and his first car." Or a Bay and a Drill Sargeant said "This movie will be a great tool in recruiting for the armed service" I cant blame Spielberg they same way I can't blame Bruckhiemer for hiring Bay the Only thing I can do Is wonder why Speilberg decided not to direct it himself. Bay is good at one thing Blowing stuff up the problem is "getting the bot characters right" as Murphy put his actors put up proformances as wooden as those in the ST:prequels. Bay's best performance came from actors just playing roles thay've played Half a Dozen times. As far as acting in this movie you'll likely get a performance around Pearl Harbor, but stuff will blow up nice.

Gany- my take on your question

    by finky089

I have I never been grossly enamored with most of the films Bay has directed, but I don't hate the man himself. I've just never been much impressed with his "big buget action films" (the way they are typically marketed is a huge turn off), but I end up seeing them on HBO or DVD usually thanks to a friend or relative who is watching it. But I treat his movies sort of "live and let live"- I don't feel compelled to see it, but I don't really care if other people want to watch them. My railing against Bay on TF comes not from my general disinterest in his other films as much as my disappointment with the direction the TF movie has taken under his direction. Because I have nostalgic felings for the property (though only its G1 form) the film production does interest me and seeing it evolve in a way that feels disingenous to the property's original incarnation is disappointing. I'm not saying it's "wrong", or even that I'm disappointed solely because the film isn't shaping up to be the kind of production I hoped it to be. Truthfully, whatever I "envisioned" is irrelevant since I'm not involved in producing the film. My disppointment with Bay comes with the way he got fans's hopes up as though he was standing solid with them, then contiues to show how the fans were decieved whenever stuff leaks. I don't think he's doing it maliciously. To be honest, I'm not sure he or Spielberg were ever on the same page os the "fans" as much as they thought they were , or the "fans" thought those two were. I think we assumed so, but then saw the leaked script and images and realized, "holy shit, this isn't what I thought they were doing at all!" It feels like a bait and switch, done originally just to get the fans in their pockets. Not because they make up a majority of the audience, but in hopes of having their help in creating consistent good buzz. As for why not jumping on Spielberg when he announced Bay? For me because even though I haven't really felt Spielberg to be the same director in the last 10+ years as he was prior to that, I still felt that if SS wanted Bay, even if he wasn't my "fantasy pick", then so be it. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Since then, I feel they've both dropped the ball. But, yeah, I think blaming ONLY Bay is just haterism b/c it takes far more than the one man to make a film like this.

    by finky089

most of all, I don't want to see Transformers turn out to be just another "Bay Blows'em Up!" movie. I feel it deserves better and based on his track record, Bay is not the ideal candidate to do that.
