Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Animated SPIDER-MAN movie will follow Miles Morales!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some super exciting news. Sony has been developing an animated Spider-Man film with the great talents behind The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and now we know a little more about their movie. Not much, but enough to get us super excited.

Namely, the animated movie will focus on a different person behind the Spider-Man name, young Miles Morales.

It's a smart move and an instant way to differentiate itself from the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon being established in the live-action films.

If you find yourself confused, you just need to know that in the comics they sometimes tell alternate timeline stories. The comics you read growing up and the ones most of the movies are based on are in the Earth 616 timeline. That's pretty much our world, with our celebrities and movies and pop culture events reflected.

Miles Morales comes from a different timeline in which Peter Parker does exist, but is killed. Morales' powers come from a similar place as Parker's did, but he's not exactly the same. He does take up the name and a version of the costume, though, to fill the void.

There's been an outcry for Miles Morales to turn up onscreen for a while. He's a more inclusive character, being half-black and half-Latino, and a change of pace from the exact same Peter Parker story we've seen two different iterations of (soon to be three).

I'm not as read up on Morales as I am on Parker (Spidey was my go-to book as a kid), but what little I have read of him I like a lot and seeing this character at play in Lord & Miller's hands is all kinds of exciting. It's also exciting to me that they're going into alternate timelines and I wonder if they'll explicitely talk about that in the animated feature or if they'll try to make it a little more general audiences friendly and just tag him on to the already existing Spider-Man lore.

What do you folks think?
