Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Rihanna did a new song for Star Trek Beyond. It's a little weird and out of place for the image of Star Trek to have a pop song exclusive tied into the movie, but if I can fully get behind Kirk and Spock riding a 1980s bus with punk hooligans in order to save some whales, I'm not gonna complain about what'll likely be an end credits song in the new Trek movie.
Plus it's not bad. The song feels a little more James Bond-ish sombre than I'd expect for a Trek film, but so does all the dialogue and imagery in this trailer. I think since we heard Simon Pegg was taking over writing duties that we expected a lighter, funnier Trek, but it seems that there's some heavy weight to the events of this movie. Kirk looks to still be struggling to find his own identity and is in over his head with the new threat.
After a summer filled with mostly hot messes, I'm still hoping that Star Trek Beyond pulls one out, especially since it'll be the last time we see this full crew together on screen. I imagine they'll recast Chekov now, but the next movie will be bittersweet at best.
