Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The moment I started noting that I was, in fact, aging was when the huge nostalgic eruption of Space Jam love started appearing all over my social media streams and favorite film geek message boards. I don't get it. At all.
When I was a young man (and still to this day, actually), I was always confused at the bewilderment the generation right before mine had for The Goonies. To them it was just noisy kids being annoying and to me it was one of the most fun adventure movies I grew up with. I try to look at it critically now, but all I see is good character work, a badass adventure score and a sense of fun that you rarely get anymore even in the very best family entertainment.
I tried to rewatch Space Jam when the whole internet community was going crazy over it (as well as some close friends) and I still don't get it. Michael Jordan is a hell of a basketball player and as an actor he's a hell of a basketball player. The animated stuff to me plays like a shadow of the usual Looney Tunes glory. I have become that guy that just couldn't understand Goonies.
So I'm going to try to not be as dickish as most of those guys were to me. I'm glad all you youngsters adore this world and won't talk down to you guys for loving it, even as news of a sequel is coming out and my snark reflex starts to itch.
The news today, courtesy of THR is that the long-discussed LeBron James-starring sequel to Space Jam might be attracting none other than Justin Lin.
Lin would be following up Star Trek Beyond with this film, which he is co-writing with Andrew Dodge, and is, reportedly, considering directing as well.
The man can have his pick of projects, one would assume, so there's gotta be something here for him to want to dive in so strongly when he could just write and produce.
