They throw the word “Inhumans” a lot on AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. these days, and I found myself wondering during the recent new episodes how all of the stuff in the show was going to tie into the full-fledged INHUMANS movie that Marvel had lined up for 2019.
Here’s one possibility: that all that talk actually killed the project.
Bleeding Cool ran a rumor (heard from anonymous sources at the bars surrounding New York Comic-Con) that the INHUMANS film is about to get dropped from the Marvel slate.
Apparently, this is tied in with yesterday’s announcement of ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, which was Kevin Feige’s first big greenlight without former boss Isaac Perlmutter: Perlmutter still heads up the TV side of Marvel Entertainment, and Jeph Loeb & co. have gone so far in setting up The Inhumans on S.H.I.E.L.D. that Feige saw fit to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and just let the TV guys keep it for themselves. But we get another ANT-MAN yuk-fest to compensate!
Jokes aside, the idea that The Inhumans were going to be the MCU’s de facto replacement for the X-MEN “mutants,” (which they can’t even say) was picking up steam, and it was no coincidence that the show was pushing their presence in the lead-up to their prospective film (even if it wouldn’t have featured Chloe Bennet’s Daisy/Quake). The effects and scope of the TV show have done their Inhumans justice thus far, but it still has felt like set-up for something bigger and crazier entirely, which now may never happen, at least on that scale. If Feige is really scrapping the movie as part of a power play with the Perlmutter-ran TV division (or merely to protect themselves from whatever the writers do on that ABC show), then THE INHUMANS and their various powers might be relegated to the small screen for the time being…
But remember, this is certainly just a RUMOR for now.
