SDCC '15: The New BATMAN V. SUPERMAN Trailer Is Now Online!

Jeremy here...

You want to see the BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer that just debuted at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con? I can help you with that.

"The red capes are coming..."

If anything, this trailer is a calamitous reminder that Warner Bros and DC are adamant that their superhero movies are cinema compared to the pulpier offerings from Marvel Studios. In theory, I like this approach. In practice... I'm on the record as a MAN OF STEEL fan, and I haven't budged a bit on this. I think it's great that they're using the destruction of Metropolis as the inciting incident for Bruce Wayne's Superman hatred (even though I could do without 9/11 imagery in a superhero movie), and Lex Luthor taking advantage of Supes' low approval rating is a perfect Luthor-ian plot. I also dig the idea that Batman has been active prior to Superman's emergence (in today's Comic Con panel, Zack Snyder explained that Gotham City is Oakland to Metropolis' San Francisco). The dialogue is thuddingly on the nose, but that's sort of Snyder's m.o. "Black and blue, god versus man, day and night..." it's difficult to make dialogue like that sing, and it never sounds right out of context. It was silly in 300, and appropriate in WATCHMEN. I just hope the characterizations can bear the weight of such ponderous utterances. If not, this could all get goofy in a hurry.

But as a piece of marketing, I think this trailer is rather brilliant. I was already on board, and this only further stokes my excitement. Hurry up, March 25, 2016!
