At the end of this new trailer for the documentary I AM CHRIS FARLEY, Lorne Michaels refers to the late comedic performer as "infuriatingly talented". That's perfect. Watching Farley work himself up into a lather often left you elated and exhausted. He didn't seem to know how to shut the brilliance off, and you weren't sure you wanted him to - even though you could see the physical toll his antics were taking on him.
While I'm curious to see what directors Brent Hodge and Derik Murray have done with I AM CHRIS FARLEY, there's a part of me that's leery of revisiting that story. When the substance abuse issues started bubbling up, you wanted to believe that his family and friends could save him from being his generation's John Belushi. But it happened anyway. And it's no one's fault. Farley was simply too powerful a lifeforce to be reined in.
I AM CHRIS FARLEY barges its way into theaters on July 31st before moving on to VOD/DVD on August 11th.
