New This Week

Battlestar Galactica: The Remastered Collection on Blu-ray is the cheaper ($62.45) of the two new Blu sets. It only features the widescreen version of the series, with about 15% of the original images sheared off at the top and bottom to fit modern widescreen TV sets.

The more expensive ($84.49) Battlestar Galactica: The Definitive Collection on Blu-ray offers both the cropped widescreen version and the uncropped version in its original 1978 4:3 aspect ratio. The latter gives viewers 100% of the images they saw in 1978 but also generates big black boxes on the left and right sides of Starbuck, Athena and Adama.

The more expensive “Definitive Edition” also includes “Saga of a Star World,” which is the edited version of the pilot (with a slightly less open-ended denouement) as it appeared in cinemas in 1979. The “Definitive” set also boasts four hours of bonus features, including more than hours of deleted scenes from the original series, the featurettes "Glen Larson on the Creation of Battlestar Galactica" and "Stu Phillips: Composing the Score," and the 45-minute documentary "Remembering Battlestar Galactica."

Both the “Remastered” and “Definitive” sets contain HD versions of the lower-budget 10-episode second season of the ABC series, which was set on Earth decades after the events of the first season and titled “Galactica 1980.”
