The new documentary FED UP looks to take on the food industry head-on. The film examines America’s obesity issue from a somewhat different angle than we are used to seeing. Rather than writing off this epidemic by saying the current generation is simply fat and lazy, this film shines the light directly on a different contributor to the problem: the food itself.
Directed by Stephanie Soechtig and produced by Katie Couric and Laurie David (AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH) the film looks to examine the fact that the food we eat every day isn't as simple as we might think, thanks in large part to the various modifications and enhancements that it has undergone - particularly when it comes to sugar and the way it is added to, well, everything.
I’m always interested in films like this, not just for the information they present, but also for the way they allow us to reexamine the habits that we have formed and perhaps take for granted. We find ourselves in the midst of a health crisis that has no easy fix, but examining the possible solutions is always a positive step forward.
