Darker ZORRO Reboot Finds its Writer!

Hey guys! Horrorella here...

Sony has had a ZORRO reboot in the hopper for quite some time now, and it looks like it is finally ready to move forward. Deadline reports that playwright Chris Boal has been hired to pen the screenplay for the latest iteration of the masked hero, though it sounds like this is going to be a different Zorro than we are used to seeing.

Producers Walter Parks and Laurie McDonald (also currently producing the MEN IN BLACK reboot) are apparently aiming for a darker, grittier version of Zorro, described as:

more of a Dark Knight-style unveiling of the character with a new backstory, gritty realism and emotional core.

It sounds like Zorro isn't going to be strickly swashbuckly in his fighting style, either.

There will be swordplay, combined with the martial arts that came from Europe and created a deadly combination of action and lethal fighting systems that combined swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles.

This direction would definitely take the character away from the more family-friendly adventures that he is associated with (though, I really don't know how hardcore they would ever make him).

What do you guys think? It seems like everything has been headed for the remake blender, but sometimes that yields interesting results. Other times, it means disaster. What do you think? Would you be into a darker, angrier Zorro?
