Are you ready for Elton John's JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT!?!

Hey Yo, Draven here.

Over the last decade, Hollywood has seen a steady and consistent rise in the popularity of the musical genre. As such, THR’s report that Elton John and his production company, Rocket Pictures, have acquired the rights to the very famous and very popular stage musical, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT came to no surprise to anyone. The only surprising thing is that the rights were even still available.

Elton John will executive produce the film which will be an animated adaptation of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s biblical-musical stage production. No cast or crew have been announced yet, other than confirmation that Elton John, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber will executive produce the film while Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish will be the producers.

This is one of the more well known stage productions and so it is a little surprising that the only cinematic adaptation of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT is a 1999 straight-to-video version starring Donny Osmond (that I am sure is an incredible work of art). So this makes a lot of sense for a production company to want to acquire the rights for a new version. The fact that it is animated and will appeal to religious families also doesn’t hurt its chances for success.
