Hey guys! Horrorella here...
Nicholas Cage has made quite a name for himself over the past few years, with his crazy roles and insane, over-the-top performances. And in a good way - watching him drink beer out of a dead cultist's skull in DRIVE ANGRY was one of my happiest moments of 2011. But he seems to be switching gears in a big bad way in this new film from David Gordon Green (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, PRINCE AVALANCHE).
In JOE, Cage plays the titular character - a reserved man with a great deal of darkness and aggression bubbling just under the surface, who forms a bond with an abused teenager (MUD's Tye Sheridan).
This looks to be an atypical role for Cage, and one that I can definitely get behind. Dark, brooding, angry, and above all, restrained - certainly a departure from the role that he has been choosing lately.
The film was very well-received at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Cage's performance garnering a great deal of positive attention. Unfortunately, no U.S. release date has been set. Hopefully, that will be remedied soon, as this is one that definitely has me curious.
What do you guys think?
