David Tennant, who played the British lead detective in ITV’s 2013 miniseries “Broadchurch,” will also play the American lead detective in Fox’s remake.
Almost the exact same thing happened to Mark Strong, who played the Edinburgh version of Frank Agnew in Channel Four’s 2006 miniseries “Low Winter Sun,” then found himself hired to play the Detroit version of Agnew for AMC’s 2013 American remake.
(Little known fact: “Doctor Who” vet Tennant was reportedly on the short list to play the title role in NBC’s “Hannibal” before Mads Mikkelsen landed the role.)
Both the British and American versions of “Broadchurch” deal with the impact a boy’s murder has on a small town.
Writer-producers Dan Futterman and Anya Epstein, both veterans of HBO’s “In Treatment,” will serve as showrunners. “Doctor Who” vet Chris Chibnall, who created the British “Broadchurch,” will write the first episode of the American “Broadchurch.”
