The Kidd here...
Films coming from DreamWorks Animation always seem to sport impressive voice casts, and THE CROODS is no different - Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke, Cloris Leachman. But will at that power behind the characters translate into a solid family film? We'll find out on March 22, but I'm willing to give this one the benefit of the doubt knowing that half of its directing duo was also behind HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, which surprised me in a big way. So how can you not be optimistic knowing that Chris Sanders' mind is involved here, with Kirk DeMicco partnering up for this effort?
DreamWorks Animation has had a pretty decent history. For every DRAGON or SHREK or KUNG FU PANDA, there may be a MONSTERS VS. ALIENS or SHARK TALE or three MADAGASCARS or all those SHREK sequels. Their hits have been pretty memorable, and their misses... well, there are actually less of them than I originally thought. That's speaking to my own personal tastes though, too. When it comes to the financials, DreamWorks Animation films rake in buttloads of cash at the box office, so you know when one hits theatres, families are coming out in droves to see it.
I expect the same thing from THE CROODS, which just saw a new trailer released over the weekend by 20th Century Fox. It appears to be your standard family fare, and, from those I've spoken to who have already seen it, they've seemed to enjoy themselves... maybe not on DRAGON levels, but on one that makes this a worthy watch.
