Harry's 1st PSP Report! KILL BILL VOL 1, TRON, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN & LUMINES!

Greetings Programs, Harry here with his new 2nd favorite thing to do with his hands. That's right - I got one of them new fangled PSP thingamagigs from SONY. I figured with this 21 day road adventure that I'm set to take with Father Geek and my Nephew - that I should have something fun for the kiddo as part of the reward system for doing his daily lessons. He's at the beginning stages of learning to form words on paper - an archaic method that early man utilized to communicate... that we, for mainly sadistic purposes, continue to inflict upon the young. Each day of the drive he'll have to earn time with my PSP - for which he'll spend it mostly playing SPIDER-MAN 2 - I suspect. But I picked up various movies for the trip - things that I may enjoy watching - some that he'll enjoy - and still others that ol Father Geek will vibe to. I've been checking out the little device and figured that this new portable cinematic and gaming toy is exactly the sort of thing I dig - and thought some of you may as well. So here's what I've checked out so far...

I'll start with the addictive game -

LUMINES

This game from UBISOFT is like crack. I really can't express just how addictive it is. Sure - it's a bit like Tetris, but it's just got a European Techno-y beat that actually drives the game - it'll slow down to this nice calm Run Lola Run sorta calm, then it'll speed up... making you go faster and faster - and if somehow you pull it out - it sets into a nice calm. I unlocked 3 skins so far - and each one has a different vibe. If you have a friend with another PSP - you can go head to head apparently - I don't have that option as... sniffle... I have no friends... sniffle... that have this game. But there's challenge levels - you can play against the machine, there's puzzle stages and they're all just a fucking blast. It clears your mind of everything, but the puzzle. The strong pulsing of the music and the colorful landscape. The resulting zen state - was bliss. Playing with Earbuds and the sound on max - to drown out the outside sounds... have a fan blowing on you as you play in a lotus position... yesterday - whilst in a 30 minute continuous flow - where I made over a 1000 of them bastard beat boxes disappear - I actually levitated and my astral form left Earth and communicated with my spirit guide Gwangati The Fragile Sage Spirit of the Mutawanga Clan. I was one with LUMINES and my PSP. I knew Kung Fu. Then the machine brought on a brutal onslaught and I came tumbling through millenia of human bloodshed into a puddle of self-loathing. Worry not Gwangati - I will see you soon. Great game!

KILL BILL VOL 1

Ok - ya know - holding KILL BILL VOL 1 in my hands - in glorious widescreen... with the same extras as on the DVD... that's right - extra 5,6,7,8's playing at the House of Blue Leaves... and the making of... all right here for me. The light output and clarity of this little device is heaven. It feels like a plasma screen with full on HD clarity - and once you pop those lil earbuds in... You've got that ol ShawScope mono going, followed by that Grindhouse feature presentation bit of psychedelia followed by a black and white bit of brutality and... Nancy belting a helluva song. Richardson's cinematography - that wonderful bit of animated bliss... the Toho modeled city... the glowing of Chiba's robes... There's a bit of this film that feels like a home movie due to the two weeks I spent on this production... and I'm dying for THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY's release next year of the 'combined' Tarantino masterpiece. But for now... I'll have this to carry around. It is a film I can watch a thousand times in my life and smile each and everytime. Though I have to admit - this was the second film I put in the PSP.

TRON

TRON was the first cinematic insertion into my virginal PSP. I beefed up the memory on this sucker with a little 1 gig (SanDisk Memory Stick Pro-Duo 1.0gb) Not that you need to - but... ya see, the gateway film to open my mind to computers was TRON. It made me dream of other sentient universes inside the inventions of man... and as a result - I have to have more storage space on this baby - so that I can store wonderful little programs... some of which, perhaps you wrote. Heh. Anyway... I was shocked when I got my TRON UMD that it held extras. The deleted scenes and more. I love this movie. The production design is just stunning. To me - it isn't dated a day. In fact, FLYNN'S arcade... god - wouldn't that be the greatest game franchise... a series of FLYNN'S arcades that only had vintage stand-up machines and played 80's tunes. Held ZAXXON tournaments and TEMPEST leagues? Ok... ok... I'm sorta kinda a geek. I still want to see discs of Tron as a real olympic sport. Wouldn't that be the shit? Tell me, wouldn't you watch that live sport. Screw cycling, tennis, golf, baseball, soccer and football... give me Discs of Tron and ROLLERBALL! That'd be the shit. Being able to carry TRON with you anywhere you go... it's akin to being able to test instantly if the people around you are... you know... "one of us" I mean - how many of you have opened the door to let friends in to the pronouncement, "GREETINGS PROGRAMS"? You'll also find trailers for NARNIA, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and NATIONAL TREASURE. In all - it's a geek essential - and a film I can't wait to see my nephew's reaction to.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

Since at some point on this trip we'll be taking my nephew to DISNEYLAND - how can I not have PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN for the munchkin to habitually zombify to. Now - the coolest thing is... the aspect ratio of the film is the exact same as the widescreen of this wondrous device. Not that I complain when things are letterboxed - and I do wish widescreens were full on 2.35 to 1 - but thats cuz - I'm just not satisfied with technology - no matter how cool it is... it could always be cooler. The detail on this is so sharp you can see Kiera Knightley's nipples through her blouse top after Sparrow rescues her from her corset. Tis a wonderful detail. Absolutely splendid. The sound again is full 5.1 if you wish to hook it into such a device. However, a tad disappointing is the fact that it doesn't have any extras. Being spoilt by the KILL BILL VOL 1 and TRON UMDs well... I kinda expected me extras. Now I'll go get all pouty about not getting them. Still a great film - and definately one that'll capture my nephew's imagination on this journey. Besides - he must learn to Take what you can, Give nothing back... it's the American way! I mean Pirate way!

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS

While this UMD isn't loaded with extras - it has its original language... as well as an English and French dub. Now - that'd usually be pretty useless in my mind - as the subtitles are very nicely done on the original track - but - my nephew who can't read - but loves what he calls "badass sword films" will enjoy this without havint me read it all to him. BUT - part of this trip will involve him learning the spell and write better - cuz... well he can't be listening to dubs of cool films... that just must be remedied. Now - it seems there's a weird bitch streak in some about this film. Personally - I've always felt the backlash laid pretty squarely upon the title change. The original title of THE LOVERS is frankly... the more fitting title. And that is the film. Sure, there's amazing fight scenes... that Bamboo sequence is just damn near my favorite sequence in a period martial arts film. The sound design, the awesome majesty of it. It's just bliss. Ziyi Zhang is just one of the purest beauties on the planet Earth - and her performance and dances at the beginning of this film - well, they just kick ass. BTW - the bamboo sequence sounds awesome on the earbuds - the cracking and splintering of the bamboo... Zhang's heavy breathing... it's just awesome.

Ok - now for a bit about the PSP itself. My favorite little feature on this baby is on the power switch on the side... if you push it all the way down - you stop time, but you can continue to move. It really freaks out people, cuz you suddenly disappear... you can get all the money in the bank... you... ok... that's not true. What it does when you push it all the way down is it turns off all the buttons on the thing so that when you're watching a movie... listening to some groovy tunes... you don't fuck it up. Which I find incredibly helpful due to these nubs some call fingers of mine.

I figure - I'll be giving you folks a run down on the various UMDs and GAMES I get for this little bugger - just cuz... Hope some of you found this useful. I haven't tested how long this lasts on battery power alone. But I have a lighter charger for it - as well as a full on plug in. But I'm sure at some point on this trip I or my nephew will give it a full test. And if there's any problems with this little Jetson device - I'll let ya know. But on the whole - so far - this sucker is incredibly nifty.

i just got dead to rights for psp...now it's simple and short but come on...for once there's a game on psp where you shoot people.i love it.and the multiplayer is kinda fun.

  • July 25, 2005 2:44 AM CST

    Seems cool, still too small.

    by dr_dreadlocks

But honestly I just wish it would play actual DVD's, or nothing at all. Especially since I don't want to have to buy 300 dollars worth of UMD's, and then suddenly the PSP becomes old hat and is then "fixed" again. Then we have Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, Mini Disc bullshit. It's all consumption. Frankly, I'm tired of it.

    Why Nintendo DS is better

    by makemyfilm

    1) Dual screens with seperate information on both, giving greater variety and depth to DS games. Yes, PSP has a larger screen, but, boy, does it eat up that battery twice as fast as the 10 hour ds battery. And watch those movies on a PSP. They will bring battery life down to 3 hours. 2) Touch screen. Truly a fantastic, innovative feature that PSP cannot rival. New games such as Kirby's Canvas (perhaps the best portable game ever - Imagine playing Sonic the HedgeHog, yet, you draw your own screens!) and METEOS (Tetris x 1000 with a sylus!) are better than any games on the PSP. 3) Wifi built in. Yes, so it's on the PSP too, but. imagine playing classic Nintendo Games like the upcoming Mario Kart (which is rumeroed to have every Mario Kart game on it) and playing this with persons online anywhere in the world. 4) Oh, it plays over 1,000 Game Boy Advance games, many of which are worlds better than PSP games (check out Advanced Wars or Zelda Minish Cap). 5) Yes, the price: $149.99 (vs $249.99 for PSP) with a $30 game, Super Mario 64, perhaps the best platformer game ever created. Most PSP Games are $39.99 while DS games are $29.99 (wait until Nintendogs comes out....an amazing , innovative game). Now, some of you are going to say "The PSP has an MP3 player and you can watch movies". To that I say: In order to truly download song/movies, you will need to by a $100(!) memory stick. ANd, oh, let's not forget that serious draining battery. Cant plays games and listen to music and lwatch movies if that batter doesn't last long. Put the $100 toward a NOMAD Video/Mp3 player with TV like features. THe future catalog for DS looks quite amazing, which is expected of Nintendo, the true innovators of video games.

  • July 25, 2005 2:54 AM CST

    Also....

    by makemyfilm

I agree with a poster up above me: why pay $19.99 and above for a UMD movie with no features when you can buy a DVD for $14.99 at Best Buy, loaded with features, AND, watch it on a much bigger screen? The UMD pricing is certainly a rip, especially when you realize, once again, how quick that battery on the PSP drains.

    This thing is stupid

    by YouInRawbIns?

Now, the idea of a PSP would be cool. "Portable games and movies on a beautiful screen? Shit yeah, motherfucker, get me one!" Until you hear about the whopping, I mean flat out ball-imploding price. The system itself is expensive, but the real lunacy lies in the people that would buy the portable movies, the UMDs. Who, aside from stoned out smack dealers and a bored Bill Gates, would shell out an additional 20-30$ (after buying the DVD for that price) just to watch it on a smaller screen with shittier sound. Whoever has that much money should give it to me, then expose their open genitals to microwave rays.

until you fucking hold the thing in your hands and use it for yourself DO NOT JUDGE. i was saying the same things until a friend let me borrow his PSP with a few movies, games, and 1gig of music. made that 8hour train ride to NYC alot more bearable than it was without any device. the price yeah it sucks, but i bought one, and i do not in any way regret that purchase. yes, i put $500 on my card that day, and im poor...but im poor AND thoroughly satisified.

    Homebrew

    by Det. John Kimble

Dudes, you can play Genesis, Gameboy , NeoGeo, SNES, NES, etc on the PSP thatnks to the homebrew community. Oh, and MAME as well, in case you want a little Galaga action. That alone makes this the ultimate handheld.

  • Man, I know it's bad in the long run, but I would have had this baby in school during boring classes watching movies. As it was I had to settle for books... bleh! Just kidding. Books kick ass. When is HP7 coming out?!!

  • July 25, 2005 3:22 AM CST

    No

    by funnyhat

not to mention, there is a downloadable emulator program NES, SNES, GENESIS, TURBOGRAFx 16, NEO GEO, MASTER SYSTEM, Game Boy, and MaME emulators. i have about 40 roms for each, a wireless 2player chess game, calculator, wireless poker, DOOM 1 and 2, and 50mp3's on ONE 1gig stick. if portable Super Mario 3 or Sonic doesnt whet your whistle than yeah, its not for you. but if it makes you drool like i did, start saving nigga's.

    Thanks for the recommendations!

    by blues

and the handy links to Amazon through your referral account. Sadly, if I ever do buy anything you "recommend" I'm not going to use your links, since I feel insulted at the blatancy of your pimping. Aren't you a millionaire? Don't you already have advertising on this site? Why is it that all you write anymore are veiled attacks on your enemies like Avi Arad, blatant pimping for your buddies like Michael Bay, and these "articles" which are basically just catalogs for amazon.com? It's not like your movie projects are proceeding at such an enormous pace(even if you actually have any work to do on those) that you can't keep up with both those and the site. I mean Moriarty's work at least sounds like it would occupy most of his time.

Sony missed out on something there..

    by MaulRat

If they had made it a little longer, they could have accomodated for a slot loading regular DVD drive.. now tell me, if you had the option of owning a PSP with UMD, or a PSP with DVD, which would you prefer?.. they would have sold more like hotcakes and less like the xbox 360 will (non-backwards compat my ass!!). Had they had the option of portable DVD, which would let people use thier own home dvd collection, then I would have bought 3 at the very least, one for me, 2 for my kids, possibly a few for the nephews and nieces that DONT piss me off. It would have been great for those long 'boring' road trips. Now it seems like a more expensive NintendoDS, with Pay per veiw movies (because lets face it, you'd buy the movie, watch it once, think to yourself "I am all that is geek!" and never watch it on the PSP again).. i'll just save my money and buy a PS3 instead.

    Advent Children not PSP exclusive

    by Tyris Flare

The Final Fantasy 7 movie is coming out on dvd too. There's one less reason to get a PSP. Not that there's many reasons in the first place. Kind of sad that playing roms of old games is more attractive than buying new games for it. Not that there's any worthwhile games coming out for PSP anyway. The DS is getting all of those.

The UMD movies have a grave problem...

    by Edward Brock

I don't own a PSP or anything but from hat I've been reading, the image for UMD movies is chopped to fit the 16:9 screen. I undestand that if they didn't, 2.35:1 movies would be ultra-tiny but it still sucks.

    Where's the love?

    by brendahamLincoln

I have both a PSP and a DS, and it seems that people love one and hate hate hate the other. I love both. Kirby Canvas Curse is one of the best and most frustrating games I've ever played. Lumines should be made in pill form so I can ingest it and have it with me at all times. If you have the cash to spare, buy one or the other or both, but don't hate just because you're fiercely loyal to one company. I like Coke and Pepsi. I like In N Out Burger and Jack in the Box. If I didn't already have a portable DVD player, I'd probably rent UMD movies from Gamefly for roadtrips. But as it stands, the games for the PSP is more than enough to satiate me. Thank you, Japan for the PSP. And thank you for the DS. And a preemptive thanks for Nintendogs.

    Harry's New PSP column

    by Frank Black

My Mom picked me up a PSP, (and one for herself,) and it is definetly a complex little system and more of a toy for adults. Frankly, I am glad Harry will be covering PSP news as well, (as we have started to also at our little web site, www.mondopopsickle.com, http://tinyurl.com/co7nq) Harry, might I suggest picking up Nyko's Theater Experience Charger Case for your system so you don't have to hold it the whole time. It has beautiful surround sound and it serves as a stand and a case and gives you an extra 7 hours of battery life. I was a naysayer, but I have realized that the only people who don't like the PSP, are people who don't have one yet. Harry, I have been a fan of this site since the beginning and a supporter of your rise and success. Keep up the great job and enjoy your trip. (Enjoy Dinsyeland. My wife and I have annual passes and go quite a bit! Pirates is still a wonderful ride!)

Why would you want to buy UMD films?

    by Brock Samson

Here's a format that crops movies, doesn't sound all that good, and is hideously overpriced. My question is, are the UMD's selling well? The PSP is, but that's probably due to the daming aspect. The movie thing seems like a cheap gimmick to make more money.

    UMDs and movies on PSP

    by Frank Black

Being the owner of 3,000+ DVDs and a hardcore movie fan, I scoffed at the idea of watching a movie on a little screen. Why would I need to watch a movie on the go anyway when I could read a book or play a handheld game. (And as Hammer2Fall said, you could just get a portable DVD player.) Here is the deal, the image quality is so good on the UMDs and you can watch movies in situations of boredom where you couldn't lug around a DVD player. Also, for the price of a DVD player, you get a great gaming system, an MP3 player that sounds amazing, a photo and MP4 player, soon to be a web enabled device, and it is a great gaming system. Now, I would't buy everything on UMD when I have all of these movies, but I will be picking up the ones I watch over and over again anyway, like Pulp Fiction or Sin City. (I hope they start releasing old film noir personally.) The PSP is a great mulit-media entertainment system first, and then a good gaming system second. Also, when you look at all that it does, it is a good deal.

Why the PSP rules over the Nitendo DS

    by PlasmaOrb

I have a PSP and there is so much you can do with it, even if you do the homebrew and hack into it and do what you want later down the line. The Nintendo has no options and no real features, thats why that POS is $149, and thats why it really isnt selling except to the under 12 crowd, cause they are too dumb to realize what they dont have. Its a kids toy, thats all... nothing more. The PSP can be for kids but mainly for adults, i think. I know firmware version 2.0 that is coming out will add on alot more features, like more photo extensions, other than JPG. I know they are adding on more video control and a web browser.. since the PSP does have a 802.11b wireless connection.... hmmm.. where is yours Nintendo? I forgot you dont have one, cause Nitendo leaves everything out cause they are morons who have no real place in the marketplace. The Gamecube was a joke also, no online games, cant play DVDs, basically cant do shit, just like the Nitendo DS. The BATTERY life on the PSP is really good, i tend to get like 4 hours on a charge, you can get a power brick to add on later down the line, if you really want that extra power time if you are on the road or whatever. The PSP is superior in everyway... who gives a fuck if it doesnt have two small screens, i would rather have one nice big one instead. Nitendo fucked up on their Nitendo DS just like they did with all their other gaming products, just like that fucked up 3D gaming system that they came out with years ago and tanked like Gigli. Just go buy a PSP, if you want to play games, music, movies and even homebrew stuff.

But have you lost your bullshit filter? PSP schilling? Who's going to buy that this is a spontaneous thing? Out with it - admit that you're reviewing products by hire. Damn dude.

    by indio2

Hola! I'm not much of a gamer, but I bought one of these devices, just like Harry, for long roadtrips between Mexico City and Central America (something I do for work a couple of times each month)I sometimes take my 4 yearold and wife along and it keeps them occupied for hours, and with the unit, games, and films being so small its easy to secret away, it doesn't scream here I am come steal me which is something I have to think about down here. I plan to use it this way, it won't be a replacement for my DVD rig, just the ultament portable entertainment system.

Do some research before you spout idiotic lies. First, the DS aqbsolutely does have an 802.11 connection. Mario Kart will be one of the first games to utilize it, as well as Animal Crossing. As far as who it's selling to, the DS is actualy selling very well to the 18-34 crowd- there are more owners in that age range than in the "under 12" demographic you spewed from your ass. In short, a little homework would save you a lot of embarassment. Some of us, like myself, can appreciate both the PSP and DS for their differences. Once the RTS and RPG games start coming out for the DS, you will see what that system was born to do.

This is just as Harry states in the article. We have received NO compensation for this endeavor. We HAVE bought all games, movies, and hardwear with our own funds as Harry puts forth for my grandson's enhanced entertainment on our 6000 plus mile movie roadtrip. Anyone who has ever traveled a great many miles with a 5 yearold is well accquainted with the "are we there yet" syndrome. Our motive was to preserve our sanity by the use of one... small... all purpose device, that could be silent to our ears so I could drive and Harry could update the page during this epic trip. We thought you guys and gals would enjoy and find useful reports on how well it works not only for little Kublakhan's amusement, but our own as well.

UMD's are nice if you're the size of a hamster.

    by Orionsangels

I'm sorry, but I think super advanced portable systems are pointless, i can understand cute little games on the gameboy and GBA being portable, but when the games start getting too advanced and you can watch movies on it. I say bah! if you wanna play games or watch hitech movies, put a DVD player in your car with a 17 inch screen. when you're on a road trip the idea is to get out of the car and experience the outside world, leave behind all the hitech stuff. heck on second thought, i don't even think TV in the car is good. I grew up staring out the window on family trips. you see the world out there, todays youth are too attached to their hitech gadgets, let go once in a while, but back to advanced portables. when they get too advanced with the graphics and i'm watching slick looking movies on this tiny screen, what's the point anymore? i think i'll go get my magnifine glass. no i'd rather play games and watch movies on my 60inch plasma screen on surround sound, thank you very much!

    Nintendo

    by gredenko

If you were buying it primarily for the kid for this trip, you should have gone with the Gameboy Advance. No need for the DS even--the gba has tons of kid-friendly video content, lots and lots of kid-oriented games, and you could load up on all that for the price of the psp alone. The psp is great, I have one and I love it, but the movies are mostly not for kids and the umd format is overpriced and redundant. Kids will watch the same episode of spongebob 200 times, so that's not a bad investment, but out of the umd movies out there, how many would you show to a 5/6 year old?

    NINTENDO DS RULES!

    by makemyfilm

-until you fucking hold the thing in your hands and use it for yourself DO NOT JUDGE. Ive had it in my hands. Screen has to be dimmed to save battery. It's okay, but not quality of DS's dula monitor system and, oh, that battery! Just keeps going out on PSP! -Dudes, you can play Genesis, Gameboy , NeoGeo, SNES, NES, etc on the PSP thatnks to the homebrew community. Oh, and MAME as well, in case you want a little Galaga action. Well, if you want to play the illegal download game, you can do the same with the NINTENDO DS. Get a 1 GIG EZ FLASH Game card, put into your NINTENDO DS Game Boy slot, play 1,000's of Game BOy games, mame, etc. Been around for Game Boy advance for years. -I'd rather watch movies I already own on a portable DVD player, thanks. Yes! PSP Games so expensive! I can buy DVDs much cheaper, watch on a bigger screen. -Sorry by the PSP's screen is just too small for my tastes, but I can't stand watching a movie on any video screen smaller than 25". No sale here. Ha! Funny! True dat! Oh, and, on the DS, you'll be able to download movies too with attachment coming out. Really, how many times are you going to watch house of Flying Daggers on small screen for $19.99 with no bonus material? Please. -Just hold the system in your hands it feels like a Playskool toy. I love goons like this who rip the DS though do not justify why they are ripping it. Have a debate. How about an ounce of fact in your argument? Or, is your grammer at Playschool level? OH, AND PLASMAORB makes this inane comment without doing any research: "I know they are adding on more video control and a web browser.. since the PSP does have a 802.11b wireless connection.... hmmm.. where is yours Nintendo?" Idiot, DS has the 802.b connection! The first game being launched to use it is MarioKart DS, perhaps the greatest launch ever for a game. And, the internet online play will be free for all. -The BATTERY life on the PSP is really good, i tend to get like 4 hours on a charge, you can get a power brick to add on later down the line, if you really want that extra power time if you are on the road or whatever. Ha! 10 hours on the DS!!!! 4 hours on PSP if you're lucky. 3 hours or less if you watch a movie. -The PSP is superior in everyway... who gives a fuck if it doesnt have two small screens, i would rather have one nice big one instead. I do. You get seperated information. DOUBLE the information to play superior games. On the psp, I hope all of you enjoy simply flipping back and forth between screens to get your information! Which, by the way, uses more battery power! Drain, drain, drain! Your game systems energy, and, $250 from your pocket!

BOTH the PSP and especially the DS (deal with it makemyfilm Nintendo fanboy) are fucking gimmicks. I understand why they got one for the trip though. If Harry wanted to get a kid system for his nephew alone he could have purchased a DS. And if Harry wanted to watch movies I personally would have bought a portable DVD player because A) a bigger screen B) HARRY, YOU HAVE A MILLION DVD'S. I'd get tired of holding the damn PSP thing for that long. As stated by many before, I can't fucking imagine buying a $30 UMD over a $15 DVD with more extras. by the Grobe

I'm no fanboy, I have both a PSP and DS... how you can call a handheld a "gimmick" is beyond me- either you want one or not, but portable gaming is no gimmick. And if you give the nod to PSP for its analog stick, then what about the entire analog touchscreen on the DS, that can emulate an analog stick with better precision than the PSP's tiny thumbpad does?

  • July 25, 2005 3:12 PM CST

    DS Sucks!

    by quadrupletree

Sorry but touch screen is a great interface for a palm pilot, not a gaming platform. It's not intuitive, difficult to control and it breaks often. And would an analog control be too much to ask? Seriously, I tried metroid on DS and the controls sucked, not fun AT ALL. Same for all the other games out on it now too. Total crap, Nintendo should be ashamed. Two screens? Why? is it for all the ADD kids that can't focus on one thing at a time? This isn't the fucking ship from the Matrix, I don't need more screens to look at on a handheld. I'm not saying to go with a PSP because I agree it's way overpriced, but it's like they rushed the DS to market to compete with PSP without properly developing it.

  • July 25, 2005 3:51 PM CST

    Quadrupletree: You're nuts

    by makemyfilm

Obviously, you have not played the DS to say it's not intuitive. It is amazingly accurate, in fact, more accurate then any video system I have ever played with. Imagine a joystick where you can go ANYWHERE on the screen. Get a DS, buy Kirby's Canvas and tell me how great and intuitive the touchscreen is. Breakdowns? Please, quote facts. How many breakdowns. Show us proof before blabbering off flasitys. I have had my DS since November and it works great! And, no scratches on the screen (sorry to you PSP persons out there who have burnt out pixels on your screens....and that is a fact). Dip: You tried Metroid on the DS, a DEMO, ANd, you have the option of using the stylus OR the analog control, as you do on all DS games. Why dont you read before posting?

    by deadguy76

Yes I know it seems outdated to have a written language. But imagine how much writing has done for cinema! Writable UMDs

    by nexxus7

Apparently the PSP games are not that great. I bought each of my kids both the Nintendo DS and PSP. Neither system is being played to any great extent. I wouldn't be surprised if they are out of battery power. the theory will be tested in a few weeks when we go on a weeklong cruise of the Mediterranean. I'm gonna load up on PSP movies and the latest games this week. However, I also think that until you have cheap writable UMDs so that you can rip TV shows and favorite movies (or Sony sets up something like a videostore with $2/TV-$5/movie downloads)not many people are going to utilize the format. Buying a $100 memory stick for this purpose doesn't make sense when you can buy a spindle of 100 blank DVDs for $30. They need to get recordable UMDs out into the market that would cost a buck or so. And it wouldn't hurt to get some cheap UMD players and computer drives out there too, not to compete with portable DVD players and laptops, but so that people who drop $20 on UMDs don't feel cheated. For that matter, I think UMDs should really be around $9.99 when you can get a DVD for $20 new, $14 on sale, and $5 in the bargain bin.

    I don't get it either

    by Vern

I'm probaly just too damn old to understand the deceptively retarded-seeming culture of today's youth, but jesus if this doesn't seem like the stupidest technology to be pushed on us this hard in a while. I hate how they now say "now on DVD and PSP" on all the ads, as if it's a reasonable option for grownups to watch a movie in their hand. Next you're gonna be watchin this shit on your wristwatch, or on the back of your debit card. Or on the tip of your nose. No more of that troublesome HOLDING business. I agree with the people who recommended that gadget called "BOOKS". I know for a fact Harry owns some, because I gave him a copy of mine. Plus there's the one he did. Another thing I've noticed can work sometimes when commuting or travelling, it's called "interacting with other human beings." How it works, first one person talks, then the other person talks, and it kind of goes back and forth. At least, that's the best case scenario. Also there's one called "looking out the window and thinking shit over." But I think now it's considered uncool to be alone with your own thoughts (thank jesus for inventing the i-pod. it plugs directly into your brain). Anyway, I don't blame Harry for having fun with gadgets but I ain't watching Kill Bill on any screen smaller than my head. It's just plain disrespectful.

Headgeek on your various conspiracy theories

    by HEADGEEK

Y'all really make me laugh. Every July, I get around $12,000 from my mother's estate - a ranch up in North Texas - Baylor County. The Portwood Ranch. Money comes from the Leases we signed. Its split 3 ways right not - some going to my Great Aunt, some to my sis and some to me. I get another similar allotment in December. Now - I used part of that money to pay down my mortgage and property taxes. Then - we dropped about $600 on my Dodge Durango - to make sure it had the best tires we could get and so that it could have a tune-up with hose and belt and filter replacements. Cuz - well - this is a 6000 mile 21 day roadtrip - and we want to minimize the possible problems. Last week at the sneak for THE ISLAND - a friend of mine was playing with their PSP and their NINTENDO DS - gaming addict, I s'pose and let me play with both. Since my nephew plays with his PLAYSTATION 2 - I know he's very familiar with the controller. Also - because my friend GLEN OLIVER (of IGN FILMFORCE fame) has one - and I've seen a couple of things on there that made me go... COOOOOOL - and at various events I've seen geeks watching movies while they waited in theaters for the "Real Movie" to start - I thought - hey, I wouldn't mind having one of those things. I dropped about $700 on games, films, system and modifications to it. Why, cuz I haven't bought a game system in ages. Because when I was reading online at various sites about the PSP - it recommened the gig stick for saving game levels - something I know my nephew will appreciate. I also picked up SPIDER-MAN 2 and this floating shooting vehicle racing game - IGN rated it pretty high. Later this year when GODFATHER comes out, I'll get that game just cuz I'm sickly curious. Most of you think I'm far more devious than I am. Literally - I'm writing these just to pass on experiences - just like I do on just about everything I can talk about. Some will appreciate it, others won't. What made me decide to - was the idea that on the KILL BILL and TRON UMDs there were special features and that on PIRATES there weren't. I had no idea these little UMDs had special features. The only UMDs I plan on getting are movies that I know I can watch a bazillion times. And wouldn't mind carrying around with the system. Which weighs less than a pound and fits like a glass case in your chest pocket. This system - and buying the way I do is a "luxury" and I'm fully aware that 'most' of you can't go drop $700 on an impulse. I can. This month.

If by "nuts" you mean totally correct

    by quadrupletree

I have played the DS. How do you think I formed my opinions? You want facts? OK here's one, every time I go to Target or Best Buy and try the demo DS they have out, the screen is scratched or the touch screen doesn't respond anymore. Not very durable is it? I don't care if it is a demo, the point of the demo is to sell me on the product, so if it's broken it doesn't make a very good impression. And I did try Metroid with both the controls and the touchscreen, the controls aren't intuative. In fact they flat out suck. Kirby's canvas? Why would I want to play that shit? I wouldn't spend money on that, where are the cool games? We keep hearing they're coming, well Nintendo has been saying that since the N64, and Gamecube! Guess what, they never materialized that's why those systems are losing the console wars. I'm not buying a system on promises of cool games to come.

    Harry and books

    by HEADGEEK

Oh god yes I have books. Hell, I've got maybe 10 books for every DVD that I own. Let's see - I'm around 7000 dvds - yeah - that's about right. But ya know what - Gio can't read yet. He's at the earliest stages of that wonderful process. Like many munchkins he loves games and movies. SO - I'm USING games and movies - to motivate him to "See Spot Run" and "Sam I Am". I've also picked up 5 workbook style books for "Kindergarteners" that I'll be working with him on... on this trip. And when he's done a really good job - He'll get 30 minutes to an hour of game time. Having said that - this is my toy. And I'm getting stuff that I love. The only film that is being bought for it specifically for the midget is the SPONGEBOB MOVIE - I'll only watch that while tripping balls on strange Cacti in the desert.

It influenced how many racing games were made and spawned several sequels, Wipeout XL, Wipeout3 and the awful Wipeout Fusion on Playstation 2, not to mention tons of copy kats, featuring futuristic flying hover cars and insane tracks. with techno music, although that whole genre can be traced back to F-Zero on the Super Nintendo. I'd love to play Wipeout Pure since I love the series, but not on a teeny tiny screen, that's silly.

So, you base your opinions on a demo unit that kids and vandal teens have scratched to shit? Good luck seeing a PSP survive that kind of treatment. The touchscreen is very durable, actually, it's survived me beating the hell out of it since last Christmas and looks pristine. And, just because you don't find Metroid's controls intuitive doesn't mean that other intelligent people won't. In fact most reviewers (and laymen like myself) consider it the closest thing to controlling a FPS with a mouse. But, you can always use the stylus or even the D-pad if you don't like the thumb-pad. I guess the choices must confuse you, which makes me have sympathy for your tiny monkey brain. And, if you will write off an amazing game like Kirby based on bright colors, you are not really worth wasting an argument on. You want "cool" games, but you probably bought BMX XXX because it had titties in it. Dark colors, metal soundtracks and blood do not make a good game. Not to say a good game can't contain them, but most gamers actually want something called GAMEPLAY which Nintendo has a long history of providing.

Kirby Canvas is the best game ever made for a portable system. But, if you're too closeted to try that game, try a more manly game such as METOEOS. Puts Luminies to shame (you want to see an intuitive stylus in action? Play METEOS - it will kick you ass). -Guess what, they never materialized that's why those systems are losing the console wars. The honest-to-God truth.

    by dr_dreadlocks

I am a firm believer that Harry/Moriarty and co. do care about the fans in some way. I mean, Harry does post on here sometimes. Who cares about the context? He still does it. His system is almost entirely unfiltered, good luck finding a place that allows so much flaming. But, in the end, it's still honesty. The main problem with sites like this gathering attention is that Harry and his fans now have a canyon between them. Harry can't be an outsider observing the industry anymore. He's an insider who has to face the people that he reviews the next day. I mean, imagine that your friend held a play at school. You review the play in the school paper and completely bash it. How would your friend react? Which is exactly why sometimes I do find it pointless for Harry to review films. He is too positive sometimes, but I can't blame him for doing so. Bashing Robert Rodriguez and then going "Hey buddy, want to go to the mall tomorrow?" Would be a tricky situation. But this is a news site. If you don't wish to read it than don't. Frankly I find Harry's giddy charm to be enticing when he's really jazzed. Lately it seems to be missing, but I'm sure it'll return eventually. The only thing you should utilize, Harry, is that you have two projects (as far as I know) in the works. Ghost Town and Princess of Mars. Use this site to shill out information on the projects. You have full insider information. Even small bits and pieces to tease right now would be great. I mean, you'll obviously have the exclusive. But what you truly need to do is relate with your audience man. With three thousand Amazon links and claims of lavish wealth (We can't all afford that many books and DVD's) You're alienating the people that made you. I mean, shit, Oprah's still popular but she's been out of touch for years. Don't become Hollywood chic. Stay who you are, keep the identity of the site, and get gritty. If you know someone in the film you're reviewing, note it and review as best you can. That's all we ask, I figure. This isn't meant to be hate man, you know who you are, but please... Remember what brought you here. Once you know that, you'll remember that we are your audience.

I don't hate you for success or how much money you have or necessarily think you should explain how much there really is. That's your business and hatred of success is just envy expressed as cool. Hell I do all right and own every game system there is. What gets me is that yes, you have recused yourself from commenting on this site because there is a conflict of interest - in fact I'd say you've been far more honorable about it than McWeeny (and hey McWeeny, why were you alone looking lost at the Sheraton Suites during Comic Con at 9pm when you should've been at the Hyatt bar laughing it up with all the bigwigs). You've assigned other people to cover it. But here's the problem - your site and its cachet was dependent upon giving us news past the b.s. that Hollywood has been shovelling at us. You made brave calls and out and out said bullshit when a stinker was approaching. But now the site lacks any real news whatsoever and your replacements lack your passion and taste and what brought you success - your sincere, out and out love of movies. Frankly no matter how egregious some of the bullshit here has been there's no doubting that you love movies singularly and truly and that has shone through. But now - you've got interviews by Quint that a third grader could've pulled off. You've got shopping guides with links to amazon for stuff that most of your readers cannot afford to have. It's why they're downloading movies in droves (and believe me our industry hasn't got a clue about the prevalence of that) There hasn't been a real "scoop" on this site in maybe two years running. Hell, I come hoping there's a Vern review every day or to read talkback to guage tracking - it's the most brutal tracking there is. But there are so many planted reviews here and you know it. The studios pay people to write things on message boards and you know it. You have a lot to say about movies and you can't ethically do so as much as you used to, so the site is lacking your weird passion, which is what made this site great. Harold, you're long winded and a bit overcompensating but I want to read your take on what this "slump" was (and it isn't strictly about box office numbers, it's about how the audience is reacting to what's out there). But instead all we're going to get is you talking up consumer goods you like? _______ As for the whole PSP vs. whatever issue... I own every game console. When it comes to handhelds, the thing about the PSP is this - it's one of the most amazing pieces of handheld entertainment ever made that Sony are totally SCREWING UP. This thing can connect wirelessly to the Internet and with a hack browse it; that's right, you can check your email with thing in an airport. But Sony still have yet to release a browser. UMD as a selling point is weird and obnoxious - we have to worry already about DVD plus HD-DVD. What's really lacking are great games. Half the games available are remake driving games. Lumines is genius, yes, and addictive as crack. The word from Japan this week is hardly great, with 10 or so new titles announced only 1 of which looks decent. Hardly any game supports the online play feature. GTAL LCS will be awesome, no doubt, if we get to even buy it thanks to political showboating that turns a closed eye to a game in which you can KILL a hooker you had sex with, annhilate 40 police officers and pop the heads off of medics who come to help them, and as soon as someone finds unused code buried in the game that requires a day of work to unlock softcore sex - BAN IT. I digress. Lastly the stupidest thing about the best handheld ever - the memory card situation. By forcing us to use proprietary Magic Stick DUO to really get use out of PSP you need to shell out another 200 bucks to get a 1 gig memory card. That being said, once you have one, get yourself PSPware (google it) and put all your DVDs on the thing and screw that silly UMD format. Is it illegal if I bought a DVD and port it to my PSP to watch on a trip?

    bullshit

    by punto

what I find really insulting about these things is that you're paying money for a computer, and they won't let you run programs on it. Yes, I know there's a 'homebrew comunity' and they come up with hacks and everything, but you can bet your fucking ass that the next game or movie you buy for it will come with a 'mandatory upgrade' so that you can have all those 'exciting new features' that will also break the ability to run your own programs. I know it's a lost battle for sony, they'll always come up with new hacks for it, and that not everyone is a programmer like me, so most people will just say "it just works for me", and that's exactly how they take advantage of you; it's sony's attitude that kills me. I fucking paid money for it, it's mine, and I can't use it to run my own software? that's bullshit.

Come on boys, leave Harry alone. He didn't start talking about his money until we egged him on. I didn't mean to be "dissing" Harry as I believe is the terminology the young PSPers use. If anybody should have this gadget it's Harry. I depend on Harry to watch movies 24 hours a day so I don't have to. I just figure that the technology ought to be limited to 1) Harry 2) (to a lesser degree) whoever it is that shops at The Sharper Image and 3) super intelligent mice. It should not be pushed on the mainstream as the new medium though. For the rest of us, we can stick with regular, human sized movies. Please note I am also against portable DVD players, drinkable yogurt and pre-made peanut butter sandwiches. p.s. Harry I think you will find that 5 ON THE OUTSIDE: VERN'S WRITINGS ON THE FILMS OF CINEMA is the perfect book for young readers.

At least in the newspapers when they make ads to look like genuine articles, they have a small "advertising" written somewhere up the page. Wow, between selling out for free trips to premieres, forcing PSP ad into a talk back, and over crediting yourself as a "producer" for John Carter, you have officially become your own PLANT!

I don't know where you guys are buying your UMDs...

    by RezE11even

But most everywhere around Syracuse has them for 15 bucks. Some of the newer releases start out at 20, but are quickly dropped. I've never seen one for 30, that sounds like total bulshit. I was kind of worried about the price of the PSP at first, but now I'm glad I bought one. I only own 3 games(MGS, NFS:U, and some liquid puzzle game) and 2 films that I feel I can watch a lot without getting bored by them(OuatiM, Hellboy) but there are plenty more games coming out soon that interest me, like Death Jr, and the new Viewtiful Joe and Devil May Cry games. So yes, while the first initial purchase of 250 bucks IS a lot to blow, given how much I travel I would say it's definately worth it.

You're not entitled to dick from him. It's his fucking site, it's his fucking money. And since he's not charging you to read this site, you're perfectly fine to navigate away to go read the basement ideas forum or some shit. Don't like the amazon links? Oh, boo-hoo. Doesn't cost you anything extra to buy through his links. DO it, or don't do it. If you have too braincells and can type this site's URL, I'm sure with just a few hours of work you can enter amazon's or some other site's URL and buy it free and clear all by your lonesome. You people are fucking insane.

MakeMyFilm pretty much covered what I was going to say...

    by evergreen

....although Nintendo fans often come across as a little bit TOO loyal for their own good. However, I've had my DS for7 months and I really do feel that it is the first stage in a revolution in nintendo's approach to gaming. I haven't had the pleasure of Kirby's Canvas, although there is something called DS paint which can be downloaded through the mod scene, which is extremely addictive. Other games which eat up my time are WarioWare touched, Pac-Pix, Super Mario 64 DS, and Electroplankton (less of a game than a touch-based musical interface)- my girlfriend plays Zookeeper pretty much non-stop when she's around, and she kicks my ass too, she never plays games, yet the DS has her hooked - this is surely a good sign. I've played a few thigs on PSP, and while the wireless play is good, it simply isn't going to be able to match the thrill of racing someone on the other side of the planet at Mario Kart; Nintendo will not be going bankrupt anytime soon, for the last 3 or 4 years, the biggest selling books of the year have not been The Bible, they have not been Harry Potter - they've been Pokemon books. Don't hget me wrong - I think PSPs are cool, and I'll probably get one in a year or two when the price has halved, but for now it's all about the DS. And I have heavy suspicions that when Nintendo unveil their Revolution controller, it will have a touch-screen interface much like a DS. Infact, I bet you can use a DS as a Revolution controller. Any thoughts?

    Nintendo = Retards

    by PlasmaOrb

I find it funny, the guys who have to bash people on here. I think cause their brains are used to kiddie games and lack luster performance, that they havent really gotten past a certain level on intellect. Yes, i screwed up and said that the DS didnt have wireless.. it does. But so fucking what? How many 30 something guys unless they are geeked out fan boy losers who never get laid will play you in Mario Kart or whatever lame ass rehashed game Nitendo has come out with. I for one dont want it.. if i was a kid or some fucking retard with a helmet and a bib to catch my drool, then i would want a Nitendo, cause thats who its built for. I want something that does it all, not just limited things, yes, it does cost more, yes, it has a small screen. But if your on the move or whatever, who gives a fuck. Its better than nothing at all. I would rather have one big screen than 2 small lame ones. Know why the DS gets more battery life? Cause its a POS system that doesnt have any real potential. Why has the GameCube died in sales, they are basically giving it away, just like they will with the DS.. i see a price drop for the DS by Xmas 2005, just cause they know Sony is hot on their tails of kicking their dumb ass again, cause they dont have the foresight to see what people really want. Make a system for Kids and Adults, not just Adolescents and Jerry Lewis Marathon Kids. Half of the people who bashed the PSP, probably havent really played it. I played with the DS when it came out to see what it was all about, and i put it down within 5 minutes.. cuase it was another Nintendo fuck up waiting to be thrown into the garbage with all the other things that they made and people gave up on, cause they just werent good.

  • Even Nintendo will admit this fact. The Nintendo and Disney names mean "safe" to most parents. I was a proud Super Nintendo owner for years, but HATED the censorship on that system (Mortal Kombat 1 and Wolfenstein were 2 blatant examples). People will always defend their own systems because of the money and time involved with these things makes you devoted in a way. Like an intense relationship of sorts. Me, I don't play video games these days as they tend to stress me out, so I don't give 2 shits about which system is on top. The fact is, Nintendo has always led the competition with handheld units and Sony still dominates the home console market. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Plasma, you got some drool on your bib

    by the Grobe

And just like your first post, you don't have any facts straight. Nintendo is the ONLY company to have made profits off of its last console... even at the price they sell the Gamecube, they make a profit, where Sony and Microsoft both sell theirs at a loss in order to make the money back on games. Boo, Nintendo, damn you for being successful despite the low price of your console! Nintendo has throughout its history targeted a younger audience, but they also recognize their audience has grown up. That's why you'll find Resident Evil 4 on the Cube, and not on the PS2 (the PS2 could not have handled those graphics, this IS a fact). How about the Resident Evil 1 re-make which was 1000 times better than the Playstation version? Eternal Darkness? Hell, even the "kiddie" games are really just targetted at "all ages", which is a pretty big difference. If you want to get hot chicks in your house playing games, bust out Mario Party or Super Monkey Ball. Speaking of fanboy losers, you sound like one of those guys who is so insecure you have to act tough because you think it will help you end your losing streak. Guess what, Kirby doesn't make you gay, it's your own love of cock that does that! You say the DS has no potential. Really! So you can't think of any uses for two screen and a touchscreen? How about real-time stratgey games and role-playing games, puzzle games, first person shooters- all of which can be done very well with the features the DS brings. While the DS had a weak game lineup at launch, it is hitting its stride with new games right now while the PSP languishes after its solid launch. I'm pretty sure the two will compete very well, which is to say they BOTH have potential, but your fanboyism can't let you accept that without your head exploding. I have both systems and enjoy them both, and I can't stand ignorant people like you who attack something without any facts. The DS may not be for you, but there are plenty of adult gamers who it IS for- and if you look at actual sales and demographics you will realize more than half of DS owners are over 18. Finally, you talk about Nintendo rehashing titles, but have you checked out the PSP lineup? As far as I can tell, plenty of the games came directly from the PS2, so really your argument holds no water- both consoles have rehashes and both have amazing original content. As for Knowthyself's comment about the PSP firmware update... I checked it out last night, the web browser and wallpaper really kick ass. The DS is getting a web browser as well as some PDA software, although I admit it will be harder to see web pages on the smaller screen.

    Greatn

    by the Grobe

I don't think anybody said people liked the DS more than the PSP based on sales figures- they were using those figures to dispute the even more idiotic claim that Nintendo was somehow being devastated in the handheld war- which the numbers help to illustrate is clearly not true.

for about the same amount of money you can buy a device that can do everything the ipod does and it also plays games and movies. Not sure about the legality, but you can convert your dvd movies to the psp format. Not real easy, but it is possible. I do find it irritating that these corporations always expect us to buy our movies over and over. They could have easily made a program that comes with psp to play dvds on it.

    iPod and PSP battery...

    by ZeroCorpse

My iPod gets over 12 hours. With music alone, my PSP gets about 5 hours on the current battery generation, but newer ones have been promised that will suposedly triple that time. The PSP battery is NOT as bad as people exaggerate it to be. If you're sitting playing a game for six hours straight, you have worse problems than battery life.

    I dislike the PSP

For the sole reason it created a new video format instead of using an existing technology. This means less shelf space for dvds, that's right if you look at most stores (Walmart, Target, etc.) they have shrunk the dvd movie sections to make room for the psp movies which means less selection and no chance of finding smaller indie titles carried by the big chains.
