The only thing people love more than an ugly crash-and-burn is an unexpected comeback. Don't believe me? Look at Mickey Rourke. The man was trounced for two solid decades as the poster child for misspent talent, and now he's the most celebrated actor in Hollywood. If Rourke can get it back, anyone can get it back.

Merrick here...
The Beef's back with a look at Guy Ritchie (trailer HERE).
Okay, there's Tom Wilkinson, and he's the big dog. There's Gerard Butler and Idris Elba, who are crooks for hire. There's some dude named Johnny Quid who plays rock 'n roll. Thandie Newton is......
Nevermind.

Having absorbed the critical/commercial equivalent of Billy Batts' barroom beatdown via the get-your-fucking-shinebox combo of SWEPT AWAY and REVOLVER (culminating with this butcher knife to the gut from Roger Ebert), it's more than a little startling to find Guy Ritchie swaggering back to his old gangster stomping grounds with his most dialed-in picture to date. Apparently, Ritchie is one of those knockaround blokes who can't get right until he tastes his own blood.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with another report out of Toronto, this time from Art Snob who has a look at three flicks, including Guy Ritchie's ROCKNROLLA and Ed Harris' western APPALOOSA, which I'm very much looking forward to. Especially after reading Art Snob's ROCKNROLLA review! And even though he doesn't give a full recommendation for APPALOOSA, it sounds like the kind of flick that's right up my alley.
Here's the first set of reviews from Art Snob!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with El Chivo's latest batch from Toronto! The new Linklater movie, ME & ORSON WELLES in particular sounds like a stand-out and even though Ritchie's ROCKNROLLA appears to be same old Guy Ritchie... well, I like old Guy Ritchie. And if Ghost Town has enough good Ricky Gervais moments to lift it out of big studio comedy mediocrity, then I'll be very happy. Here's El Chivo!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
We’ve got two reviews this morning for Guy Ritchie’s new film, both from the Empire Movie Con in London. This first guy also has a number of details from the post-movie chat with Ritchie and rising star Mark Strong. I just scanned it because I don’t want to know much. I’m seeing the movie Wednesday morning, and so far, I haven’t seen a frame of it, which is exciting:

You might not know Danny Yount by name, but you've definitely seen (and hopefully appreciated) his work. Yount's the talented graphic designer behind the quirky-cool main titles for KISS KISS, BANG BANG (big assist there from John Ottman's score), the propulsive closing credits for IRON MAN, and the Emmy Award-winning opening to SIX FEET UNDER.

Warner Bros. President and COO Alan Horn on Guy Ritchie's ROCKNROLLA (per LA Times):
"I think it's a well-made picture, but while it's funny in spots, it's very English," he said. "I don't think it's broadly commercial. It feels like a film that deserves a spirited release, but not a wide one. Joel has an 800-screen deal, which we'll honor, but we might not be willing to spend the marketing money he wants us to."

Empire Online has the new trailer to Guy Ritche's ROCKNROLLA. It stars Gerard Butler,
Jeremy Piven, Thandie Newton, and Tom Hardy (Picard clone boy from NEMESIS) and is about...well...
Look for it to open in the U.S. 'round the same time as Bond.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. As a fan of Guy Ritchie's early films (LOCK STOCK and SNATCH), I'm happy to see him coming back to the genre. REVOLVER was a crazy mess. I totally understand why it never got any sort of release (even half-assed) here in the states.
But his new one, ROCKNROLLA, has an interesting cast building so far. They've got Tom Wilkinson (I know I always say it, but he's one of the best character actors working today), Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, Idris Elba and... Ludacris.
