Films about our current situation in Iraq are not necessarily why we go to movie theaters. We’ve seen recent films on Iraq fail repeatedly at the box office and there is a reason. We generally go to theaters to escape reality, not to confront it. Right now there’s a goodly portion of the current election hinging on a stance regarding what we do in Iraq. There is no easy answer.

A few weeks back, we posted a piece about a movie called STOP-LOSS from BOYS DON'T CRY director Kimberley Peirce.
The movie stars Ryan Phillippe and is about a soldier who returns home from Iraq, only to confront "stop-loss" - a military policy retaining servicemen beyond the time length of time they were supposed to be deployed. I.e. he is sent home...told he has to go back to Iraq...and refuses to go.

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
Fabfunk sent me this one with a review of another film (RATATOUILLE) that’s already out, but I missed it originally in my inbox. As I was trying to clean it up this weekend, I found it in there, so I thought I’d just cut off the RATATOUILLE stuff and offer up this, a very early look at the new film from the director of BOYS DON’T CRY. I find it amazing that this is the second review we’ve run for this one that has suggested that the lead is so severely miscast that it cripples the film. Harsh stuff, but it seems to be something that leaps out at the people who see it:

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I know nothing about this, but I remember when they started casting, and it seemed like that was about three weeks ago. And now it’s already screening? Wow. And now thanks to BoboVision, we’ve got an idea of what it is.
Hey Moriarty,
Bobo_Vision here. Tonight I attended a screening of a movie called "Stop Loss" starring Ryan Phillippe, Joseph Gordon Leavitt (JGL). The synopsis we were given is that the movie is about a US soldier who returns from the war, and after settling back into home life in America, he is forced to go back to Iraq against his will.
