HIFF 29: RED-FACED WITH VICTORY

I once had a professor in an English class in college once observe that "people say that war doesn't solve anything."
"Nonsense" he argued "war solves a lot of things."
I recall agreeing with him then and I still agree with him years later. The very nature of war provides an indelibly bloody series of answers to numerous questions. While many questions and problems arise in the wake of war, it can be argued that the massive projection of force can solve some problems.

Hey folks, Harry here with the trailer for the consolidated RED CLIFF. In China - this was released as two very long movies, but domestically - we're getting a condensed version of the film. This wasn't so much the choice of MAGNET, as much as it was always the plan from John Woo - who seemed to want to go this route with the film. I love the long form version of the RED CLIFF saga. It is a full on return to form for John Woo - and a pair of great period epics that form a larger greater epic when viewed back to back.

I haven't read much on John Woo's RED CLIFF since Variety's Derek Elley posted his mostly positive review back in July. Since then, I've just been waiting for the film to get U.S. distribution and a firm release date. So far, nada.

The folks over at Twitch have nabbed two good quality videos showcasing John Woo's mammoth RED CLIFF project. Some of this material was previously available in less refined, less watchable versions. This particular iteration of the footage is nice & sharp.

LOVE the shot that starts on the horse soldiers, pulls back past the onlookers, then lands on the warriors-in-training...cool.

Hey folks, Harry here... When Paul Verhoeven went home, he made BLACK BOOK... Now, John Woo has returned to Asia - and he has made RED CLIFF - An enormous Asian production of $75 million - Woo is setting this epic in the Three Kingdoms period in China - and daammmnnnn.... it looks huge. I'm giddy to see what comes from this film - and can not wait to see it. Is this the rebirth of John Woo? A John Woo without the pain in the ass of dealing with Studios that just don't get him?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Looks like Chow Yun Fat has dropped out of John Woo's RED CLIFF three days into shooting. Whoops.
The flick is a $70 million Chinese movie, the largest budgeted the country has ever produced. It's based on a well known (and 600 year old) novel ROMANCE AND THE THREE KINGDOMS that tells the story of the Han Dynasty during the 2nd and 3rd century.
The script came in really big... looks like a four hour epic as written, but the plan is to KILL BILL it and split it into two parts in Asia, but America's looking at getting the whole enchilada.
