Got The Blockbuster Blues? Moriarty Reviews Summer Alternatives SON OF RAMBOW! David Mamet’s REDBELT! Norweigian REPRISE!

Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.

We’re a few weeks into the summer season, and I’m already getting e-mails from people fatigued by “big movies.” I love this time of year, but I recognize why some people would need some counterprogramming to keep them sane. So today, I thought I’d recommend three movies that are rolling out in limited release right now, and they’re all worth you seeking them out. They’re very different, though, so no matter what your tastes, you’ll find something here you should see.

Hey everyone, Capone in Chicago here.

In just a little more than 10 years, British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has built up one of the most impressive filmographies of any actor working as long.

A Review Of The World Premiere Of REDBELT At The TriBeca Film Festival!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Here’s another one that I’ve had to wait to write about, but now that it’s premiered and it’ll be out in theaters, I can finally get to it. In the meantime, here’s one reader’s reaction to that premiere screening, along with a very pointed observation about the venue of that premiere:

I saw the world premiere of Redbelt at the Tribeca Film Festival last night (Friday).

A Couple Of Readers Disagree On David Mamet’s REDBELT!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Appropriately enough, we’ve got a showdown here.

First up, a guy who really, really, really didn’t like Mamet’s new film at all:

Harry,

Just saw a sneak of David Mamet's jujitsu flick REDBELT at the Aero in Santa Monica last nite (with Mamet and Ricky Jay in person doing a Q&A afterwards).

Psychedelic Sees REDBELT!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Mamet’s always sort of hit-or-miss for me when he’s working as a director, so I’m a little surprised by how dead-center REDBELT hit me. I think it’s great, and I’ll be reviewing it very soon.

Today, though, we’ve got regular spy Psychedelic with his take on it:

Hey Harry and Martial Artists,

Quint interviews Emily Mortimer about LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, PARIS JE T'AIME, TRANSSIBERIAN, Mamet's REDBELT and more!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a little chat I had with the lovely Emily Mortimer. I have something of a crush on Ms. Mortimer. I know that’s no surprise. She’s beautiful and a good actress to boot, so I’d be worried about myself if I didn’t have a small crush on her. I did warn her publicist in advance of the interview, but they didn’t seem to think it was a problem. Hopefully her husband doesn’t read this…

David Mamet’s REDBELT Has A Cast Now!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I’ve got this script sitting on my desk right now, and I should find time to read it. I’m curious to see what a David Mamet martial arts film is going to be like, and the script review over on CHUD today by Mr. Beaks sounds promising.

The cast that’s coming together is strange, to say the least, but my favorite sentence in the Variety story gives some indication of why this is worth looking forward to:

David Mamet's new flick, REDBELT, about American Jiu-Jitsu fighters!?!?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Now this sounds cool as hell...

David Mamet has a project with Sony Pictures Classics called REDBELT, which is being tauted as an American samurai flick set in an underworld filled to the brim with cage-fighters, bouncers, cops and special forces operatives.

The flick stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (Whedon geeks know him from the space show, Cuaron geeks know him from CHILDREN OF MEN and tranny geeks know him from KINKY BOOTS) as a Jiu-Jitsu badass who runs a self-defense studio. Somehow movie stars and fight promoters fuck him over and he has to kick some ass to regain his honor.
