A winning supernatural action-comedy from writer-producers Tara Butters & Michele Fazekas (“The X-Files,” “Ed”), “Reaper” is about a college dropout who learns on his 21st birthday that he was long ago inadvertently sold by his parents to Satan. Satan gives the kid unholy superpowers and a job hunting down Hell’s escapees.
Ray Wise of “Twin Peaks” fame is hilariously avuncular as The Devil, and it’s hard not to love the way the fat friend keeps besting the devil dogs.
USA Today gives it three and a half stars (out of four) and says:

Comic Con San Diego is screening Friday two of my favorite pilots of the fall season.
“Reaper,” a CW comedy-adventure hourlong about a kid sold to Satan by his parents, screens 11 a.m. in Ballroom 20.
“Chuck,” an NBC comedy-adventure hourlong from Josh Schwartz (“The O.C.”) about a geek who unexpectedly gets top government secrets uploaded into his melon, screens 2:45 p.m. in Room 6B.

Kevin Smith (“Clerks 2”) will direct “Reaper,” The CW’s pilot about a 21-year-old bounty hunter charged with retrieving those who have escaped Hell. “Law & Order: SVU” vets Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters did the writing. It’s Smith’s first directorial effort for TV.
