Quint and Guillermo Del Toro talk ORPHANAGE, HELLBOY II, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and HALO!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Guillermo Del Toro and I go back a very long time. I remember Harry introducing me to him when I was all of 17 years old, in the time between MIMIC and BLADE 2 when he was living here in Austin.

What's going on with the HALO movie?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here again with a little update on HALO. I've been hearing for a while that HALO as a movie project was "dead," and that ran contrary to everything I've been told my sources. It was indeed put in limbo, but Peter Jackson never left it as producer and Neill Blomkamp never left it as director. I figured it was always just a matter of time before the studios realized how much money there was in HALO as a film franchise.

New live action HALO short by Blomkamp leaks online!! Warthogs in action! Banshees! Brutes! Needler spikes!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. As a Halo nerd and a movie nerd I have to say I've found these little glimpses as to what Neill Blomkamp's movie version would (and probably will) look like. Both shorts stress the real world application and only give us tantalizing glimpses at the vehicles, armor and weaponry.

I gotta say... of all the cool shit in this spot, the thing that made me smile the biggest was seeing the Needler spikes hit the wall behind the soldiers, stick and then shatter. It's not focused on, just something for us Halo geeks.

This short ends quite abruptly, but as you can see from the below... it's leaked, so it could very well not be finished. But you get a good idea what we're in for. I can't wait to see this in Quicktime or downloaded in high def from X-box Live! I first saw this here! Enjoy it while it's still online! Thanks to Paul for the heads up!

If you want an idea of what Neill Blomkamp and Weta's HALO movie would be like, look no further than this spot!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. So, remember when Peter Jackson was producing the HALO movie and a young guy named Neill Blomkamp was brought in to direct? Well, some money people chickened out and the project went into turn around.

Never content, Weta put their all into producing a series of spots for Microsoft's launch of HALO 3 and Blomkamp directed some live action shorts using Weta's beautiful props that give us an idea of how he'd handle a HALO movie. I'd be very surprised if the chickenshits don't find their backbones again and realize just how much money there is to be made with a HALO movie done right.

Bad News. HALO a No-Go... aka Why are the studios retarded?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This sucks. I'll tell you why I think so in a minute. Here's the depressing press release from Wingnut Films, mere minutes old:

As was previously confirmed, we deeply regret that both Universal and Fox did not choose to move forward with financing the Halo film under the original terms of the agreement. At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with their partner, Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen. We are fully supportive of Director Neill Blomkamp's vision of the film. Neill is a tremendously gifted filmmaker and his preliminary work on Halo is truly awe-inspiring. While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait.

The HALO Stays On!

Hey folks, Harry here... When the bells began ringing HALO's death knell last week, I just didn't buy it. First, FOX & UNIVERSAL were leaving the project based upon wanting to renegotiate their profit participation, not over the direction of the material. Second, having FOX leave the project was the first great thing that happened to this project after Peter Jackson's involvement. Why? Well, it meant that Tom Rothman would have NOTHING to do with this project, which is a very good thing.

"The reality here at Bungie towers is a feeling of optimism, satisfaction and happiness for reasons we can't go into. Frankly we're interested in making the best movie, and it's possible that a partner who's more concerned with numbers, might not be the best partner for what's more vitally a creative process," said Frank O'Connor from BUNGIE out of today's Hollywood Reporter
