Emile was at the screening we went to at the Bridge. So was most of the cast. They were just hanging out at the edge of things. My son was with me, and this was a big night out for him. He’d spent the time before the movie charming the Warner publicists who were there. I let him work the crowd for me now... he’s better at it. He talked to Goodman. He talked to Silver. He made sure he got heard. But the one person who stopped him cold... Emile Hirsch.
My father kept a “Family Book” on me, ever since I was born – and in the first 3 years of my life… apparently my favorite thing in the world was SPEED RACER. I have zero recollection of this – but it’s been in that book as long as I have memory – but honestly, I haven’t really gone back to that series since the age of three. I’ve tried, but the animation was just too crude for my tastes – but I do love it’s addiction to speed, badass technology and stylized vehicular and physical violence. Oh… and the monkey.
Greetings! ScoreKeeper here gunning the car around the track in order bring you a glimpse of the musical kaleidoscope that is SPEED RACER (2008).
Being a die hard SPEED RACER fan since I was boy, I had been looking forward to seeing this film since the moment I learned Andy and Larry Wachowski entered pre-production.
Describing SPEED RACER is kinda like trying to describe an acid trip. A really fun, colorful, shiny acid trip. While some of you may cry foul at the comparison of what's purported to be a kids' film to LSD, I'm surely not the first person in the world to suggest some kids' entertainment was also designed for those experimentally inclined. I mean, I know kids keep all kinds of kooky hours, but Teletubbies at 4am was always a crack up to me. Fortunately, this should be (I hope) completely lost on the young 'uns while being blatantly obvious to the grown ups.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've already told you guys how I feel about the flick and now we're starting to get word back from those seeing advance screenings of the movie, even one or two from the AICN Austin screening.
The word is pretty split. Some like it, some don't. We've got a good balance of both views below! Enjoy, but be warned... there are some spoilers below!
Of course I know of SPEED RACER. I knew the song growing up, I knew the iconography. Who didn’t? But I never really followed the cartoon. I’m sure I’ve seen an episode or two, but definitely not recently and when I’d flip by them on TV as a kid I don’t think I stayed to watch.
It just wasn’t my thing. I was never into that kind of animation and wasn’t caught up with cars or racing. Give me mutants, monsters, swords, lightsabers, dogfights, robots and dinosaurs any day over cars.
Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know what... AICN is screening crazy! This coming Monday we're doing a screening of the Wachowski's SPEED RACER and I couldn't possibly be happier! After IRON MAN & PINEAPPLE EXPRESS this weekend - a screening for SPEED RACER is exactly what I'm in the mood for...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. From the sounds of things the WB presentation and the Hellboy panel were the coolest things at the Con this year. Thanks to spy "joe dope" we have a rundown of the DC presentation below! Enjoy!
My man Greynolds Park sent in some thoughts on SPEED RACER shortly after attending a screening of the film. Due to his enthusiasm for the movie, I should probably say that I know Greynolds...he is not a plant & has nothing to do with this film.
Here's Greynolds...
So I've gotta say that as a fan of the classic Speed
Racer cartoon series, I was not impressed with what
Hey folks, Harry here... I'm getting so excited. Summer is almost here. It's almost time to be transported by impossible universes that only can be found in a crazed summer - and SPEED RACER is one of the films I'm most looking forward to this summer. This review - and Moriarty's chat room orgasms - have me fired up to see this all the more. Here's Elvenblade with an early look...
In a masterstroke of official sanctioning & fan friendly outreach, many selections from Michael Giacchino's SPEED RACER score are now online.
The whole damn thing may be there as far as I know...I haven't made it through enough selections to tell.
Chadius, who gave us the heads up about this (thanks for the message, by the way), indicates the entirety of these selections clock in at around 2 hours (!?!?)
Slashfilm has posted a four minute mega-trailer for SPEED RACER. Actually, it's more like 3 minutes and 50-something seconds, but whatever.
Lots of new material in this. The movie still looks certifiably insane, and still strikes me as being set in an oversized level of Mario Kart (the mace weapon spinning out from one of the vehicles sealed the analogy).
Okay... I had to backtrack this one to the source. I see that The Moving Picture.net ran this footage on April 1st, but I can't tell when The Trailer Addict.com ran it. I've never clicked on either of those sites before in my life, so I'm not even sure if they were the first to post links to it.
Entertainment Weekly has released a bunch of new images from SPEED RACER. They're intersperced with some stills we've already seen. The images include automotive hijinks, and some shots of characters in action and inaction.
I'd post a few for you here, but I don't know how to capture images from EW, so just...
I don’t care what you say... I think this looks groovy. If I want a movie about real-world car racing, I won’t watch SPEED RACER, but if I want to see a batshit crazy cartoon from the ‘60s turn into a batshit crazy film using cutting-edge technology, it looks like there’s finally a film to fit that bill.
Some days, it’s a real struggle to find something to post here on the site, and other days, you wake up and find a mailbox stuffed with awesome.
I’ll be frank: I can’t stop playing these SPEED RACER trailers. I have no idea what to expect from the movie, but I love the look of the world and the way physics seems to have been completely redefined by the Wachowskis.
When this spy wrote in the first time, he sent a very thin piece. Hesitant. I wrote him back, asked him some questions, and asked him to write in with more detail.
I had one big question for him, since Toshi’s mad for this trailer, too. Basically, the entire Apple Quicktime page is like a playground for him when he comes into my office to see me while I’m working. “Daddy, play BATMAN. Play FUCK YOU PANDA. Play INDY JONE. Play WALL·E. Play SPEED RACER.”
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Don't know exactly what I think about this project. I really like the look of the live-action stuff and the CG stuff looks cartoony, but I can't fault them for making a cartoony adaptation of... well, a cartoon. The visuals seemed tripped out beyond belief, no doubt. And here's the teaser poster (click it to get a bigger version)!
