It’s funny. There are people who write me angry letters because I “hate” M. Night Shyamalan.
Hardly.
I’ve been a fan of his since before he had a single film in wide release. I was pushing THE SIXTH SENSE here on the site for almost a year before it came out. I was turned on to his writing by another writer I know, and his early scripts are still some of the best technical screenwriting I’ve ever seen.
I do think that as his skill as a director has grown, his scripts have gotten sloppier, and I wasn’t fond of either THE VILLAGE or LADY IN THE WATER at all. Beyond that, I think his behind-the-scenes hubris finally caught up with him and really hurt him this year when his new spec didn’t sell to anyone in town.
