There are people on this speck. They have a mayor who has 96 daughters and one son named Jojo, who all share a bathroom! Whatever that is...
AICN-DOWNUNDER
Hey, it's my birthday! Saturday March 15 marks five years since I took over AICN-Downunder, and two years since I began wondering why I hadn't used my real name. No matter.
There's really nothing else worth noting about the date other than the fact that's a big round number. So, on with the column we go...

This was a particularly bad case of somebody being cut in half.
AICN-DOWNUNDER
It's always fun compiling a best of list. You get to revel in the great films and tear into the bad ones... although there wasn't really anything I saw in '07 that was as gloriously bad as FANTASMA in '06 (which I declared to be the worst film I'd ever seen), so I didn't really get that same joy. But still, it's a blast.

THE AICN-DOWNUNDER ANNUAL 2007
So, we're all done with 2007. The biggest shock? No James Bond movie. You'd think that there'd be some marketing genius somewhere who would kick the whole thing off so they could do a "007 in 2007"-type promotion, but no. And with precious few hours left in the year, I'm beginning to think they won't get one made in time.

I like being evil. It makes me happy.
AICN-DOWNUNDER
Well, I've recently returned from my trip to Everest, and man, is that thing a bitch to climb.
No?
Okay, I haven't had much time to write. The preparations for Bazura's upcoming second season (hooray!) have been taking up a lot of my time, and frankly, I haven't had much to write about (see below Reviews section for more on this).
Regardless, I am back, and with any luck I'll be able to keep this thing going with a bit more regularity than we've experienced this year. In the meantime, a small request for all of you out there: those who have read the column regularly... or a handful of times... or really just bumped into me on the street... will know that I host a movie show called "The Bazura Project". (Go to www.bazuraproject.com to watch it online!) Well, we were recently nominated for a few awards at the annual Antenna Awards (Best Director, Best Sound and Best Production Achievement). How can you help? There's a Viewers' Choice Award, that can be entered via email.

AICN-DOWNUNDER: Sunshine, John Hillcoat's cannibal movie, and Danny Boyle to direct 28 Months Later?
Hundreds left, a handful stayed, only one looked back.
AICN-DOWNUNDER
You may have heard about this already, but the Popcorn Taxi screening of SUNSHINE in Melbourne a few weeks ago was something of a disaster. About halfway through, the film began running backwards, upside down, and back to front. It took people a little while to cotton onto this, as it looked a bit like a dream sequence from earlier in the film. Soon, the movie was stopped, and we were told it would be five minutes to fix it. About forty-five minutes later, the film started up again on the wrong reel, and was stopped about ten minutes later when they decided that there'd be no time for the film and the Q&A with Danny Boyle and Rose Byrne.

So, I suppose it's too late to do my Oscar picks, huh?
Actually, I already did them. I did them weeks ago. Thing is, I took longer than expected to finish this column, and then when I sent it in... well, I have no idea what happened, but it didn't get posted. I'm going to pretend to be all huffy about how you didn't get to see how brilliant and clairvoyant I was, but the truth is I blew it. Oh, I picked the obvious ones like Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren, and Forest Whitaker, but this year was the absolute worst I'd ever had for Oscar picks. It's more than a little embarrassing.

If I could be from anywhere except Uganda, I would be a Scot! I love *everything* about Scotland!... Apart from red hair, which your women may find attractive but which in Africa is quite disgusting.
AICN-DOWNUNDER
I know, it's been a long time between AICN-Ds. Blame Bazura. Damn show's taking up every second of my life.
Anyway, it's that time of the year again. The time where I start placing far too much importance and credibility on the Oscars. The problem is, there's really no other game in town. It's the biggest celebration of film in the world, and it's the closest thing we have to a demographic, all-inclusive awards ceremony.

Death is the road to awe.
AICN-DOWNUNDER
It never ceases to amaze me how angry people get at best of lists. When you're describing your favourite films of the past year and you describe the reasons they're your favourites, people will come on and tell you that some films should have been on there, others should have been omitted, and the rest are in the wrong order. Everybody's aware that this is a personal list, right? I'm not incorrect for putting PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2 on there if it was one of the ten most enjoyable film experiences I had in the past year.

THE AICN-DOWNUNDER ANNUAL 2006
It's been a truly great year for music. I've bought an awful lot of albums that came close to being considered the best of the year, and for me, 2006 was a year for discovering a lot of new music. I've also expanded my horizons a bit. Not too long ago, if I was telling a joke about music, chances are the punchline would have something to do with country rock or Australian hip-hop. For a long time, I considered both of these musical genres to be laughably bad, and all entries within them to be as far from music as you can get. Funny, then, that the two best albums I bought this year were a country rock album and an Australian hip-hop album. "Draw Blood" by Melbourne's Wagons doesn't quite capture the energy of their live performances, but the quality of the song writing and the strength of Henry Wagon's voice more than makes up for it. The Hilltop Hoods album "The Hard Road" has better lyrics and more complex melodic shifts than just about anything else I picked up all year. If you want to expand your horizons a bit, these are the albums I'd recommend.

AICN-DOWNUNDER
Greetings, and welcome to another installment of Latauro plugs his sho-- er, AICN-Downunder. Very little to report at the moment, and I'll be putting my end of year wrap-up together soon (in the usual AICN-Downunder Annual) so I won't do that here. Hm. That leaves me very little to do. Anyone here from the internet? Tough crowd.
(Don't forget Lat's hosting his own TV show! Go to www.bazuraproject.com to see the most recent episodes, including an interview with Dr George Miller!)

Sorry, it's been a bit of time since the last column. You can put it
down to a mixture of busy-ness and laziness, but if I'm honest, it was
definitely the busy-ness. Lots of stuff going on, and all of them leaving me
too wiped to spend the two hours it takes me to realise this column actually
takes me closer to five to put together.
So, what's been going on the past three weeks? Well, the Australian film
industry pulled itself out of the quagmire! That's right, we got a whole
