Jack Bauer is headed to Africa after all!
You’ll recall the ORIGINAL original plan was to start season seven of "24" with an episode or two set in Africa before jumping in time and place to Washington, D.C.
Well, the writers’ strike has suddenly brought us back to that plan, sort of, with a two-hour TV-movie that takes the lead “24” character to the Dark Continent.

Damn it!!
The Writers Guild turns out to be sufficiently badass to sideline even Jack Bauer.
Fox has decided it doesn’t want to just give fans only half a day in Bauer’s life, so the thriller’s 7th season has been yanked from January – with no plans to return it until the strike is settled.

John Billingsly, who was terrific as the alien physician on “Enterprise” before morphing into the most Neelix-y element of feculent critics’ darling “The Nine,” has joined the cast of “24.” He will play Latham.

Janeane Garofalo, who was replaced by Mary Lynn Rajskub on “The Larry Sanders Show” more than a decade ago, will be a regular on the upcoming 7th season of “24.”
Rajskub, meanwhile, will continue to play Jack Bauer's fellow CTU vet Chloe O'Brien (even though the new season is said to be CTU-free).
According to TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello, who broke the story, Garofalo will play an FBI agent. (Recall that she played an FBI agent previously in 1998’s excellent “Clay Pigeons.”)

* From the “Heroes” panel: Kevin Smith ("Clerks II") will write and direct an episode of the spinoff miniseries “Heroes: Origins” airing in April or May.
* Alex Ross (not Tim Sale) is doing the cover for the “Heroes” graphic novel, which will collect the online comics.
* From the “24” panel: Season seven will begin with Jack Bauer in hot water, facing the U.S. Senate over perceived crimes.
* From the “Galactica” panel: Unbilled Lucy Lawless surprised the crowd to announce her return for two or three episodes of the fourth and final season.

How was two hours of “24’s” seventh season supposed to be set in Africa? By breaking format.
The idea, since abandoned, was to start Jack Bauer in Africa for an episode or two, then skip 12 hours so Bauer could get back to the U.S. for the balance of the 24 hours.

With all eyes on the show, [writer-producer Howard] Gordon admits that defining where Season 7 would go has been a constantly evolving process and involved the widely reported concept of setting it in Africa which would have changed the way the show looked and felt, but would have been too cost-prohibitive.

TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello has a fascinating exclusive involving Fox rejecting a plan to shoot several season-seven “24” episodes in Africa.
“Execs at the Fox hit have scrapped virtually their entire story line for the season, delaying the start of production by roughly three weeks,” writes Ausiello.
Since it takes quite a few hours to get from Africa to the U.S., was the plan to abandon the show’s real-time structure? Or would most of the season be set outside North America?
The story also mentions that Mary Lynn Rajskub learned only last week that she would be part of the season-seven cast.

“24” producers may be installing a new president, according to TV Guide's Michael Ausiello.
And it looks like the successor to David Palmer, John Keeler, Charles Logan, Hal Gardner, Wayne Palmer and Noah Daniels may be female.
I find this interesting not because of the character’s gender, but because the producers have been talking about big changes for “24” next season, and possibly even taking the Counter-Terrorism Unit out of the picture. (Though, Ausiello says, CTU's Chloe O'Brien is likely to be back in some capacity.)

Variety publisher Reed Business publishes also Broadcasting & Cable Magazine, which organizes a semi-annual critics poll.
I just received a ballot. The poll is looking mostly for the best of the season, which runs this year from June 2006 to May 2007. The categories include “best show,” “best drama,” “best comedy,” “best reality” and “best freshman show.”
The most vexing category is “most memorable TV moment.”
I was thinking it might be the death of Eden or the first appearance of FutureHiro or maybe that final shot of Kara Thrace, which turns into a shot of the Milky Way, which turns into a shot of Earth. There was also Jack Bauer ripping out his captor’s carotid and Kevin Pollak carving out his own eye. Pullo outsmarting Octavian. Claire waking up dissected. Juliet claiming to be a repo woman. Locke falling eight stories. Logan Echolls entering the rapist's jail cell. Jim using his tongue to check his incisor. Harriet hurting her hand on Matt’s stomach. The look of Jordan’s face when Danny announced he was hot for her. Iggy Pop’s betrayal of The Monarch’s wedding guests. Naked Annabeth Gish sucking the joint. Much with the memorable.

I’ve been hot for the comedian-actress since she played the booker on “The Larry Sanders Show” (in one episode we got to see her wrestling with Sarah Silverman on the ladies' room floor!), but the magazine has her posing in Nikitawear with bombs and guns and swords!!
