New HEROES Promo for 3rd Season!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... Sergio over at TVweek.Com sent over this - proof of a third season of HEROES - for us to look at. Now sure... as every diehard HEROES freak knew... of course we were getting a 3rd season - we've been obsessing after a truncated, slightly misfiring 2nd season... but now we're eager and hungry for more. It doesn't really tell us much, but what it does tell us - is that perhaps this season will be dealing with a hero, in their attempts to do the right thing... could they cause a greater harm...

BABYLON’s Bruce Boxleitner <br>Joins The Cast Of HEROES!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

Mike Ausiello of TV Guide reports exclusively that “Babylon 5” icon Bruce Boxleitner has joined “Heroes” in a recurring role. No additional word on the nature of the role aside from the fact that it evolved from a John McCain-like character.

‘No More Secrets!!’ <br>Monday Brings The <br>Last Of The HEROES!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

Tonight brings the last episode until peace is made with the Writers Guild of America. Are we in for a treat that will sustain us through the hiatus or a letdown of Kirby Plaza proportions?

To Recap:

BOB. Brought Claire some ashes he said were Noah’s, and assigned Elle to keep an eye on the cheerleader.

NOAH. Discovered Mohinder resurrected him and told Mohinder everything PrimaTech says is a lie.

NIKI. Returned to K-Ville and told Micah Mohinder would cure her virus.

‘What The Hell Have You Done??’ Penultimate HEROES!!</I> <br>

I am – Hercules!!

Raging controversy!! Some deemed last week’s episode a wonderful return to first-season glory while others contended it continued the suck.

The thing that bugged me the most was Elle couldn’t or wouldn't use her lightning lass power on Team Bennet until her hands were free. Were I Noah, I would have dropped Elle off unconscious and soaking in a 55-gallon drum strapped to a Lecter-dolly. With the business end of a shotgun duct-taped to her sociopath skull.

‘How’d You Think It Was <br>Gonna End??’ HEROES 2.9!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

“Four Months Ago” turned out to be a whole lot more wheel-spinning. None of the fascinating revelations that attended “Six Months Ago.” No cool cliffhanger. Just a lot more stuff we could pretty much figure out on our own.

To Review:

NATHAN. Got some nasty radiation burns saving Kirby Plaza from the Petrelli explosion.

PETER. Taken to Primatech by Elle and Bob and given a new haircut.

ELLE. Squirmed happily in Peter’s lap as she fed him Haitian Pills and explained she’d never been on a date.

If you missed the news last week, “Heroes” mastermind Tim Kring apologized for, among other things, being so pokey with his season-two plotlines:

Kring Apologizes <br>To HEROES Fans!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

“The message is that we've heard the complaints,” “Heroes” mastermind Tim Kring tells Entertainment Weekly’s Jeff Jensen, “and we're doing something about it.”

In a piece posted to EW.com this morning, Kring tallies up a list of season-two sins – the pace was too slow, Hiro should have spent much less time in the distant past, the introduction of the Herreras was awkward, Peter should have seen the virus-ravaged future in 2.1, and more – and promises to do better.

Some Interesting Wrinkles <br>Regarding HEROES: ORIGINS!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

"Heroes" mastermind Tim Kring just told an audience at the New Yorker Fest that each episode of the spinoff “Heroes: Origins” will contain two stories!

Also, “Heroes” staffer Jeph Loeb, formerly of “Smallville” and “Lost,” will apparently script one of the “Origins” episodes. (Four of the six “Origins” episodes will will be created by big-screen writer-directors; could this mean the 49-year-old Loeb also intends to make his directorial debut?)

Where’s Sylar?? <br>HEROES 2.2!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

Lots of criticism of 2.1 in last week’s talkback, but not a lot of vows to stop watching. NBC describes tonight:

2.2 "LIZARDS" - Oct. 1
AS MATT INVESIGATES THE DEATH OF ONE HERO, ANOTHER IS ATTACKED BY THIS NEW SINISTER FORCE STALKING THOSE WITH ABILITIES -- THE HAITIAN RETURNS -- DIRECTED BY EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ALLAN ARKUSH -- With one person dead, Matt (Greg Grunberg) enlists some unlikely help as the attacks continue on people with abilities. Claire's (Hayden Panettiere) efforts to hide her healing abilities at her new California high school are jeopardized by a fellow student with a secret of his own. As part of his new job, Dr. Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) must track down The Haitian (guest star Jimmy Jean-Louis). While crossing into Mexico, Maya (Dania Ramirez) and Alejandro's (Shalim Ortiz) abilities prove to be a threat to those around them. Meanwhile, disappointed by his hero Kensei (David Anders), Hiro (Masi Oka) resolves to rectify any damage his presence in feudal Japan has done to history. And another lost Hero falls in with a gang of Irish gangsters with clues to his past. Jack Coleman, Dana Davis, James Kyson Lee, Adrian Pasdar, Zachary Quinto, Milo Ventimiglia also star. Nick D'Agosto, Katie Carr, Ashley Crow, Cristine Rose, Barry Shabaka Henley, Dominic Keating, Holt McCallany, Eriko Tamura, Adair Tishler and Stephen Tobolowsky guest star.

Spoilers Are Unleashed For <br>The Return of NBC’s HEROES!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

I fear for the second season of “Heroes,” which launches tonight. The brilliant Bryan Fuller, who created “Dead Like Me” and “Wonderfalls” before writing on “Heroes” last season, has gone off to ABC, where he serves as showrunner on his own creation, the hugely acclaimed “Pushing Daisies.” Staying behind on “Heroes” is the “Teen Wolf Too” team of series creator Tim Kring (“Crossing Jordan”) and “Smallville” vet Jeph Loeb.

Can they make it work without Fuller? You decide!

Eli Roth to write and direct an episode of HEROES: ORIGINS!!! Dear God, Will Noone Save The Cheerleader?

Hey folks, Harry here... It's almost unfathomable. My precious cheerleader in the hands of ELI ROTH??? Well, I don't know if her character will be involved in Eli's episode... but he is aware of my regrowing hymen theory - and Eli is sick enough to go at it. But is television sick enough? I think not. Whatever Eli is going to do - I'm sure all you fans of his in Talkback will be there rooting for him every second of the way. That's right, your very own whipping boy, whipping your favorite show with his sick, twisted, horny mind. I can't wait for the talk back for that episode. Hell, I can't wait.

Quint takes a look at two Season One Box Sets: 30 ROCK and HEROES!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a pair of Season One box sets to review! Holy Crap, let’s get started!

I have always been a Johnny-Come-Lately with TV shows. I was a real TV snob for a long while, but you can’t deny that there are some incredible shows on television right now that push the boundaries more constantly and more intelligently than a lot of film. It also doesn’t help that technology and money have advanced enough to make these shows look cinematic.

<font color=red>TREK HD!! INDIANA JONES!! HEROES!! SEINFELD!! NIKITA!! BABYLON!! FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!! <I>HercVault!!</I></font>

I am – Hercules!!

A grown-up look at superheroes from a guy who never read comic books, “Heroes” was last seaon’s best new show. So get this. Before creating “Heroes,” Tim Kring’s claim to fame was the creation of “Crossing Jordan.” Kring wanted to make a more serialized show for a while now; successful high-continuity series like “24” and “Lost” gave Kring the opportunity, and we are lucky viewers for it.

If you’ve not seen “Heroes,” it’s like “X-Men” without the school. There’s somebody like Shadowcat who can “phase” through walls, somebody like Mystique who can assume any appearance, somebody like Forge who can manipulate machinery, somebody like Wolverine who can heal herself, somebody like Rogue who can absorb the superpowers of others, somebody like Angel who can fly, somebody like Nightcrawler who can teleport, somebody like Professor X who can read minds and somebody like Leech who can drain the superpowers of others. There’s even a guy named Gabe Grey (a.k.a. “Sylar”) who can move stuff with his brain, just like Jean Grey.

Kring, a masterly plotter, has engineered with this complex sci-fi extravaganza the finest streak of twists and cliffhangers in the history of television. Add to the mix writer-producer Bryan Fuller, creator of “Dead Like Me” “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies,” and we got one of the most watchable franchises on American airwaves.

Cheerleader Claire (invulnerable only on the outside) and her platonic buddy Zach turned out to be the most endearing couple on TV.

Sylar, who grew more powerful every time he ate superhero brain, is one of the scariest villains in filmed entertainment.

And if you seek the heart, look no further than bespectacled and murderous mutant-hunter Noah Bennet, a man willing to tamper with his own wife’s brain in the service of a ruthless employer’s shadowy agenda. The road this dark man travels, particular the turns he takes midway through the season in “Company Man,” sent tears rolling down a few faces, mine among them.

The season finale deservedly gets guff aplenty because 1) Sylar’s defeat was so devoid of imagination (mundane even) and 2) Nathan “sacrificing” himself to save Manhattan didn’t make a ton of sense because Peter also has the power of flight. Still, I even give the finale points for its intriguing return of Richard Roundtree.

Key extras unique to the HD-DVD version:

1) Most dramatically, only the HD version provides snazzy picture-in-picture video of the cast and creators giving their commentaries, which means HD-DVD purchasers get to find out that series writer-producer Natalie Chaidez, who scripted episodes “The Fix” and “Better Halves,” is hot. (The audio on the HD-DVD and DVD commentaries are identical.) The only season-one commentary not videotaped, apparently, was the one Kring provided for his oversized unaired pilot.

2) Only the HD version can be programmed to provide “Character Connections,” text screens that explain how all the dramatic personae know each other.

3) Only the HD version can be programmed for “Helix Revaled,” which leaps into play every time one of those helix symbols (like the one tattooed on Jessica’s shoulder) appears in an episode. And that helix turns up a lot.

4) Only the HD version can be programmed for “Artwork Presentation,” which brings into special high-def close-ups all of the illustrations comic-book artist Tim Sale created for the show.

Extras common to the DVD and HD-DVD versions:

* THE ORIGINAL UNAIRED PILOT (73:35) shows us some of the roads the series belatedly decided not to travel. Learn that Matt Parkman was going to use his superpower to hunt down a terrorist, only to discover that the terrorist he’s been hunting is actually his boyhood pal, a former foreign exchange student the Parkman family took in decades earlier. Discover also how Isaac Mendez’s heroin addiction originally caused him to dismember himself. See how shitty was the original Peter-Natham flying sequence that concluded the first episode. Find out that the original plan was not to make each hour one chapter; Kring originally intended to divide each hour-long episode into several “chapters.” Kring provides an audio commentary explaining why he made the changes.

* THE MAKING OF HEROES (9:59) reminds us that Mohinder was originally supposed to be 55 years old. At Comic Con 2006, an excited Ali Larter admits she’s astonished so many are so keen about a show that hasn’t yet aired. Discover that Chicago native Sendhil Ramamurthy’s “Heroes” accent is a sham.

* THE SPECIAL EFFECTS (8:43) reminds us of Masi Oka’s digital-effects background, and how it helped him communicate with the “Heroes” effects staff.

* THE STUNTS (10:21) reveals that renaissance man Masi Oka has a black belt in Kendo. We also learn that “Heroes” regulars generally like to do their own stunts but are frequently prohibited by those insuring the production.

* PROFILE OF ARTIST TIM SALE (11:25) reveals that the veteran comic-book artist is color-blind, and that others have to add the color to Isaac’s “paintings.” Sale wonders aloud how heroin-addict Isaac can afford his sprawling New York loft.

* THE SCORE (8:57) shows how series composer/musicians Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman are holding up a quarter-century after they backed Prince on “1999.”

NBC’s small-town West Texas soap “Friday Night Lights” shoots in Austin, this site’s HQ, and one of its major recurring characters is an obnoxious guy in a wheelchair named “Herc.”

Hey now.

If you haven’t seen the show, it’s a serial about a small-town Texas football team, the Dillon Panthers, which took the state pennant last year and may again this year. It’s a little like “One Tree Hill,” only good.

I’ve watched all 22 episodes of “Lights” and I’m here to tell you it’s plenty diverting. Its title theme is one amazing piece of music. The series’ showrunner, writer-producer Jason Katims, is a big talent who worked on one of my all-time favorite TV shows, “My So-Called Life,” before he graduated to create two more of my all-time favorites: “Relativity” and the TV version of “Roswell.”

Extras include:

* “BEHIND THE LIGHTS” (22:33) appears to have been shot as the first season finale was filmed. Learn that New York-born Kyle Chandler talks with a Texas accent off camera. Learn that the “Lights” pilot was the first acting job ever for Scott Porter (Jason Street). Learn that the show’s dizzying documentary-like visual style means the actors never have to “hit their marks.” Learn that Brad Leland, who plays car dealer Buddy Garrity, is a Lubbock native who once played in Texas Stadium, where the show shot its first-season finale. Learn that no one was sure the Dillon Panthers would win the state championship or not until the finale’s script was being written.

* DELETED SCENES. There are loads, but they don’t have fancy titles like the ones on the “Heroes” disc so I will list here the per-episode running time of the deleted footage;

. 1.2 “Eyes Wide Open” (6:34) (Some interesting stuff here with Maggie Wheeler as a boozy English teacher.)
. 1.3 “Wind Sprints” (1:34)
. 1.4 “Who’s Your Daddy” (5:59)
. 1.5 “Git ‘Er Done” (4:41)
. 1.7 “Homecoming” (2:34)
. 1.8 “Crossing The Line” (4:46)
. 1.9 “Full Hearts” (5:36)
. 1.10 “It’s Different For Girls” (2:43)
. 1.11 “Nevermind” (4:11) (Lots of amusing material with Tim Riggins and his new tutor Landry Clark. Their discussion regarding “Of Mice and Men” is a highlight.)
. 1.12 “What To Do While You’re Waiting” (2:03)
. 1.13 “Little Girl I Want To Marry You” (1:02)
. 1.14 “Upping The Ante” (1:07)
. 1.15 “Blinders” (6:08)
. 1.16 “Black Eyes and Broken Hearts” (2:37)
. 1.17 “I Think We Should Have Sex” (2:24)
. 1.19 “Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes” (1:00)
. 1.20 “Mud Bowl” (1:43)
. 1.21 “Best Laid Plans” (5:13)
. 1.22 “State” (2:11) (Contains a hilarious -- improvised? -- scene involving Lyla’s cell phone.)

Note please that the set is super-cheap (only $19.99 on Amazon) and comes with a money-back guarantee.

The Writers And Cast Of <br>HEROES Reveal To Wizard <br>The Secrets of Season One <br>(And A Few Of Season Two)!!<br>

I am – Hercules!!

Tuesday brings the highly anticipated release of “Heroes” on DVD, with its huge collection of deleted scenes and commentaries and the show’s original supersized pilot. (Look for more on these in tomorrow’s HercVault.)

In celebration, Wizard Magazine has produced its own episode-by-episode “season one commentary” assembling new interviews with the series’ writers and cast.

A few highlights (BEWARE SPOILERS):

* “The eclipse is one of those secrets that we’ll hold onto,” writer-producer Jesse Alexander tells Wizard. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Season 2 started with an eclipse. There’s a scientific and spiritual significance for the eclipse to the specific ‘Heroes’ storyline.”

* While artist Tim Sale usually created Isaac’s prophetic paintings from screen-shots of already completed scenes, this was apparently not the case with the early painting depicting Claire’s first confrontation with Sylar. “I remember having to hit the perfect turn for this pose that [Tim Sale] had me in, which was not the most comfortable thing,” confesses Hayden Panetierre.

* Jessica was apparently not always Niki’s dead sister, explains writer-producer Aron Eli Coleite.

* Kring knew from the beginning that Claire was Peter’s niece, and was a little creeped out that some saw the duo as a potential romantic pairing. “Just internally here, there were a lot of people who were like, ‘We’ve got to get them together.’”

* “I would pay some attention to [moppet mutant-finder] Molly Walker and what she represents as an important clue as to where [Season 2] is going,” Kring tells Wizard. “That’ll be revealed pretty much in the season opener, but this idea that Molly Walker and Suresh’s [Sendhil Ramamurthy] sister had similar ailments is a key part of where this story is going in the second season."

* Writer Jeph Loeb says the unseen supervillain -- the one Molly says is worse than Sylar -- "will be dealt with right in the first episode of Season 2."

Quint and Quinto talk Spock, Sylar, Heroes Season 2 and the upcoming DVD set!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I was originally approached to do an interview with Masi Oka for the big Heroes DVD release hitting next week. I was more than happy to do it. I’m a big fan of Heroes and in particular Oka’s work on the show.

But then I got a cancellation and I was bummed out, but that didn’t last long. They asked if I wanted to talk to Zachary Quinto. I thought he might have avoided all press to dodge STAR TREK questions since he was announced as being the young Spock in JJ Abrams' upcoming flick, but he did not and I got to spring some Trek stuff on him!
