Ahoy, squirts! Quint here.
I’m going to look over some DVDs that I’ve received for review over the last 2 weeks. Two have yet to see release and the rest hit last week. Let’s look at the new ones first.

I had never seen David Mamet’s HOUSE OF GAMES. Criterion sent me a review copy. Anything Criterion gets put in the Must Watch Now stack and it helped that the cover showed a poker table under the title and David Mamet’s name. I do love my poker and my Mamet, so it jumped to the front of the stack.

I am – Hercules!!
A SciFi Channel adventure based on the classic comic strip, “Flash Gordon” depicts an athlete who finds himself contending with otherworldly menace.
When SciFi needed a showrunner for its update of “Battlestar Galactica,” it hired Ron Moore, who co-wrote “Star Trek: First Contact” and had a hand in some of the best episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Carnivale.”
When SciFi needed a showrunner for “Flash,” it hired Peter Hume, who has written for “Charmed,” “Relic Hunter,” and Jennifer Lopez’ “South Beach.”

Though the SciFi Channel is using Queen’s 1980 Flash Gordon theme in its promos for its new “Flash Gordon” series, SciFi exec Mark Stern says we should not expect to hear the theme in the actual series.
From a Friday SciFi Wire report:
The 1980 movie, directed by Mike Hodges and starring Sam Jones, has achieved a kind of cult status because of its campy style and a memorable soundtrack by Queen. A cover version of that music could be heard in a recent promotional spot for the new series on SCI FI. Stern confirmed that the theme would be used in the marketing campaign for the series, but not in the actual show.

Apparently SciFi launched last weekend a 10-second teaser promoting its new “Flash Gordon” series, which bows in August. No footage from the show was utilized, but something rather cooler was.
One can hear a tiny yet unmistakable snippet of Queen’s “Flash Gordon” theme, for my money the best part of the 1980 Sam Jones movie. (It kinda sounded like a cover version, but I’ll leave that to the experts to debate.)
Of course, just because they use it in the promos doesn’t mean it’ll actually serve as a component of the series itself. Remember how UPN used The Calling’s “Wherever You Will Go” in all its first-season “Enterprise” promos, only to bait-and-switch into Diane Warren’s supershitty “Faith of the Heart” as the show’s actual title theme?

If you’ve not heard, SciFi will debut in August a new ongoing series based on the classic SciFi franchise “Flash Gordon.”
The channel has hired writer-producer Peter Hume (“Charmed,” J-Lo’s “South Beach”) to serve as its overseer, but there’s no news as to whether or not Queen’s brilliant and transcendent 1980 title theme will be re-employed.
We do know that a SciFi-employed photographer has been let loose on the series’ Vancouver set. Find a great deal of his or her work here.

I am – Hercules!!
I confess a lot of the enthusiasm for SciFi’s new “Flash Gordon” series kind of drained out of me when I learned writer-producer Pete Hume – whose credits include “Charmed,” “Relic Hunter” and “South Beach” – had been hired to run it. Other writers on the show include James Thorpe (“Beastmaster,” “Relic Hunter”) and Steve and Derick Martini (“South Beach”).
This report comes from someone actually employed by the production; see if his take enhances anticipation for the project:

A couple of details on SciFi’s upcoming “Flash Gordon” series, from a recent story in The Hollywood Reporter:
* Despite earlier reports that suggested Chris Showerman (“George of the Jungle 2”) was up for the title role, it’s actually Eric Johnson – who played Lana’s jock boyfriend Whitney in the first season of “Smallville” – who will play Flash.
* More importantly, former “Charmed” writer/supervising producer Peter Hume – whose other credits include “Relic Hunter” and “South Beach” - has written the first two hours, so one assumes he will serve also as showrunner.

Yeah, I would imagine a lot of you picked up the clue in that headline. Evidently, Chris Showerman is going to be Sci-Fi Channel’s new FLASH GORDON.
Here’s the original story!
I just hope they make this fun and don’t feel the need to turn the angst up too high. FLASH GORDON was never overly serious, and trying to chase the same sort of mood as, say, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA seems to me to be a huge miscalculation.
Flash. Ahhhh-ahhhhh. He is the savior of the universe. Please enjoy it, Sci-Fi. Please?

Harry here again... I've been contacted by one source that says this is UNTRUE... He was once attached to the project, and is claiming that FLASH GORDON is mired in 'Roger Rabbit 2'-style rights issues. However, he hasn't been involved in a while wi
