You do, even if you’re not sure you do. He’s an omnipresent character actor whose deadly sense of timing has been well-utilized by directors like Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY, GRINDHOUSE), Steven Soderbergh (THE LIMEY) and Richard Linklater (DAZED & CONFUSED).
My father kept a “Family Book” on me, ever since I was born – and in the first 3 years of my life… apparently my favorite thing in the world was SPEED RACER. I have zero recollection of this – but it’s been in that book as long as I have memory – but honestly, I haven’t really gone back to that series since the age of three. I’ve tried, but the animation was just too crude for my tastes – but I do love it’s addiction to speed, badass technology and stylized vehicular and physical violence. Oh… and the monkey.
Hey folks, Harry here… Sorry this was a day late, but I pulled a muscle in my back and really didn’t feel right writing. Sucks – I know… but it’s feeling much better now. This week isn’t the most amazing – but next week is the shit - especially if you love vintage films like me. As always the box art and titles are linked to the titles’ Amazon pages where you can learn more about the title – or you can purchase, thus supporting this column. I hope you dig it. I’m working on next weeks already!
Hey folks, Harry here... Ya know what... AICN is screening crazy! This coming Monday we're doing a screening of the Wachowski's SPEED RACER and I couldn't possibly be happier! After IRON MAN & PINEAPPLE EXPRESS this weekend - a screening for SPEED RACER is exactly what I'm in the mood for...
Hey folks, Harry here with this week’s DVD PICKS AND PEEKS. Some interesting films here – Especially the 3 Criterion Children’s films – which I can’t recommend enough – and of course the exact opposite – THE BEAST FROM SPACE. But there’s more… As usual you can click on any of the box art or titles and be taken to Amazon where you can choose to purchase or learn more about the title in question. If you do purchase – a small percentage of the price will go to continue this column – which I hope you good folks enjoy. Well, enough from me, here ya go…
IRON MAN is grown-up fun, a rare thing these days. It’s escapism, no doubt about it, and it’s light as air for most of its running time, even with a surprisingly high body count and a rough-and-tumble aesthetic. This is not, however, a kid’s movie, and that is such a welcome discovery that IRON MAN seems even greater than it would if it were just another kid-friendly superhero film.
How much awesome was tonight’s screening of IRON MAN at the Alamo Drafthouse South with Jet Pack Man? It was like freebasing pop tarts. Ridiculously Fucking Awesome Fun.
At 1:42pm – I called Tim League to ask when Jet Pack Man was going to be doing his test flight. Tim responded flatly and to the point with, “25 minutes!”
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I’m a LOST fan. I stuck with it over the water-treading second season and I’ve been rewarded with a slow-starting, but excellent ending third season and a, so far, amazing fourth season.
An offer to interview Ben Linus himself, Mr. Michael Emerson, came to me early last week and I jumped at the chance. Of the cast, I’d say the most consistently growing and interesting character is Ben Linus and that’s due in large part to what Emerson brings to the character.
Hey folks, Harry here.... Well - Our Good Friend... and by that I mean - GEEKS EVERYWHERE... Has officially put quill to vein and blood to paper - to solemnly swear to direct the best fucking movie called THE HOBBIT he could possibly make.
Hey folks, Harry here... I loved your letters, bribes and the hours of webcam entertainment that all of you wonderful, talented cooks and "entertainers" provided to see this upcoming Super Spectacular Screening of David Gordon Green's PINEAPPLE EXPRESS.
As stated before - the show starts at 9:30 at the Alamo Drafthouse South - you'll just need to bring your ID & if paranoid - bring a copy of the email I sent you earlier to back up your reason to attend and right to fly high with the rest of us that magical night... May 3rd.
Hey folks, Harry here – you wouldn’t believe how awesome and eclectic this week’s column is. Lots of vintage jewels this week. Great titles – ancient titles… and so much more. I loved viewing most of these this week. As always – if you click on the box art or titles you’ll goto Amazon – where you can learn more on the title in question – and if you feel like it, you can buy it – thus supporting this column with a small percentage of the revenue helping this endless series. Well – there’s a lot to get to. Let’s get to it, shall we…
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It’s been a life-long dream for me to visit ILM, Skywalker Ranch and Pixar Animation Studios (well, with Pixar maybe not life-long, but it feels like they’ve been in my life forever). In one trip to San Francisco I got to achieve a couple of those dreams. Two out of three ain’t bad, right?
Hey folks, Harry here! AICN is doing a couple of screenings with the ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE that are just going to kick so much ass... you won't know what to do. This is the first one we get to announce and it's a biggie.
Hey folks, Harry here with this week’s DVD COLUMN – there’s lots of good stuff on here and as usual – if you click on the art or the title – you’ll find yourself at AMAZON where you can learn more on the title – or purchase it – which would send a portion of the profit to sponsor this column. Hope you enjoy it…
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Alright, this second half of the Disney animation presentation has been a few days coming. I was shown some extra stuff that was in a gray area of maybe on the record, but probably off the record and was trying to find out if I could talk about it. Looks like the answer was no, but I will say it involved BOLT and I’m working on having further insides on that project for separate stories.
Hey folks, Harry here... There's some jackasses on the net claiming that Ernest Cline - who just sold his script called THUNDERCADE to Lakeshore Entertainment - stole the story from the awesome documentaries THE KING OF KONG and CHASING GHOSTS.
Really?
Oddly - I read the script for this script months before either of those films premiered. Not only that, but Ernie registered the treatment with the Writer's Guild in 2006. Something, any reporter could look up.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Instead of dropping 3 paragraph stories for each title covered in the big Disney Animation Presentation, I think I’m going to break it up into two more stories. One will covered Pixar and their slate and the other will cover the slate of Disney Animation.
This one is Pixar-centric. I’ll write up Disney’s tomorrow.
Here will be news, footage, stills and filmmaker discussions about WALL-E, UP, TOY STORY 3, NEWT and the theatrical re-releases of TOY STORYs 1 and 2.
Hey folks, Harry here… I’m betting y’all were betting I wouldn’t get this done for today, but personal problems are not really an excuse to not get the job done – but an excuse to get the job done… right? I hope y’all enjoy this week’s column – and as usual the DVD art and titles are clickable to their Amazon page where you can learn more on the titles or if you feel like it, you can click-through to purchase and help support the column. Now – let’s get to this week…
Hey folks, Harry here... About an hour ago - I finished writing my Grandmother's obit that will be going to her hometown papers. That was rough. Writing obituaries for people you know everything about. That you have incalculable numbers of memories of... And boiling it all down to roughing 400-600 words... that's impossible. Or it feels that way. You boil it down to the bare moments.
Hey folks, Harry here… Boy – I tell you what… if I never have another week like this one, I’ll be a happy camper. My grandmother’s in the hospital. My wife’s grandmother is in a hospital today for surgery. And I got diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Which resulted in me buying workout clothes, vitamins, a gym membership and hiring a personal trainer to whip my ass for not talking all you good folks advice for years.
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Is there any place I can start a petition to erase Chicago O’Hare off the face of the world?
Seriously, this airport has fucked me over so many times (even when I’m nowhere near it… I once had a flight cancel on me when I was on the East Coast trying to get back home to Austin because my Austin plane originated from O’Hare)… can’t we open up a new airport and demolish the horror show that we call O’Hare?
Hey folks, Harry here and no foolin’ these are the releases of interest on this – the silliest holiday of the year! That said – as usual you’ll find that by clicking on the box art or the titles – you’ll be taken to Amazon – where you can learn more about the releases this Tuesday – or you can purchase the item – helping to sponsor the continuing exploits of this column. You know the drill… Let’s start it off with some fresh Meat Pies, eh?
