Did I hear that they’re ditching the ticky-tacky song this season?
If the screener Showtime sent along is to be believed, “Little Boxes” makes one last appearance in the opener, with the original Malvina Reynolds recording and with the images of Agrestic suitably updated. Future episodes get no title sequence at all.
So the series is still set in Agrestic even though it burned down?
Agrestic is still afire. The series has relocated to the fictional San Diego County beach community of Ren Mar, or perhaps Renmar. The now-homeless Botwins – Nancy, Silas, Shane and Uncle Andy – seek family there.
Who has “finally been left behind”?
Romany Malco and Tonye Patano, who played pot suppliers Conrad and Heylia, are apparently no longer members of the cast. Neither are Matthew Modine or Mary-Kate Olsen.
What of Celia Hodes and Doug Wilson?
Celia’s story takes a dark turn, and an ever darker turn next week, thanks to the testimony of Doug and ex-husband Dean Hodes.
How soon after last season does this season begin?
Hours. Agrestic continues to burn out of control. Ashes continue to fall from the sky.
Is Nancy still in sales?
Nancy has transitioned from supply and sales to traffic, working her pretty white-MILF magic to ferry narcotics over the Mexican border for her new Puerto Rican boss. But that part of the story doesn’t really kick in till 4.2.
Nancy’s still MILFy?
MILFy and adorable beyond words. At 43 Mary-Louise Parker, she of the mammoth eyes and legs that go all the way to the ground, remains one of the hottest people on our planet.
The big news?
The great Albert Brooks (somehow initially looking eerily like the late Don Ameche!) has joined the cast as Lenny Botwin, father of Judah and Andy, grandfather of Silas and Shane. He’s an angry, unlucky man, and appears in no fewer than four episodes. We also get to meet Lenny’s mom Bubbie, but she gets far fewer lines.
What’s great?
Kohan’s insanely clever, sneaky, witty scripting. Parker. Perkins. Brooks generally, and “Oh, Ma!” in particular. Andy generally and his efforts to rouse his grandmother in particular. The Parker-Brooks chemistry. Nancy’s quick answers and her reaction to the tale of the silver-sequined bowler hat. The fact that “Nancy” sounds like a contraction of “Not-Francie.” “Beautiful tiny hands that bring sight to the blind.” “What kind of monster are you?”
What’s not so great?
The half-hour format. Would it kill Showtime to reshape this show into an hourlong?
