Look! Another Early Review Of TROPIC THUNDER!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I hate each and every person who is in Austin seeing PINEAPPLE EXPRESS tonight. I couldn’t make it because I had obligations here this weekend, even though Harry put me on the list. There are two comedies I’m dying to see this summer, and TROPIC THUNDER is the other one. Maybe I’ll get to see this soon to help ease the sting of missing yet another screening of PINEAPPLE.

Will it please me? Check out this review.

Hey guys!

I wanted to tell you about a screening that a friend of mine "told" me about. It was for the new Ben Stiller directed comedy "Tropic Thunder". Everyone's name was on a list so forgive me if all this sounds vague. As my buddy does not want to be "outed" as one of "those".

I am not going to give a super in depth description of the events leading up to the screening, but what my "friend" told me was the screening was on the Paramount lot. And Mr. Stiller himself spoke at the screening and introduced the film.

What I can say is the movie is simply a balls out funny as hell comedic tour de force by all involved. All my buddy was hoping for was it to be "Zoolander" in quality, and what was given was 100 times better than that.

This movie is not expected to open until August, so Ben mentioned that they are still doing final mixes, and trying out different scenes at different screenings. What my friend saw tonight he said was a comedy masterpiece. He likened it to a "Big Screen version of the often underrated and overlooked "The Ben Stiller Show" that came and went in the early 90's.

The movie centers around three pompous and popular actors all at the top of their game. When the actors can't seem to feel the moment, it's suggested that the production throws the boys into real combat to get the
reactions the film needs, things dare I say take an unexpected turn. Pop culture is skewered like crazy. The movie felt and looked like a labor of love for Mr. Stiller, not only serving as director and star, but is also credited as one of the writers. Making fun of film conventions is never funnier that when it's done by an A list cast.

All the actors (Stiller, Black, and Downey Jr.) each have their time to shine in the comedic glow of a hilariously written script. Downey has the unlikely duties of making this his year. As he opens the summer with "Iron Man" and gets to close out the summer with "Tropic Thunder" Two very different roles I am sure. Taking nothing away from a grizzled Nick Nolte as the movies veteran who wrote the book, of which the movie they are making is based.

I don't want to even come close to entering spoiler territory, so I can only tell you as a film fan, that the only movie of the recent past that has made me laugh this hard was the first time I saw Borat. This movie also has a high "geek" factor as the send up of movie (especially action-flicks) conventions are ripped to shreds.

The movie appears to be r-rated, the comedy comes from all angles for all different tastes, there's gross out, physical and well crafted lines made for quoting for years to come. If people are tired of the neurotic chump Stiller is prone to playing, many will be thrilled to see him come to show more of that I knew he had, but really has gotten lost over the years. This is a great comedy and I am already looking forward to seeing the out-takes on the DVD, how these guys could not laugh during every take is beyond my scope. Make sure you don't get burned out on movies this summer, because come August you are going to be blindsided with one you might not have seen coming
