This sounds like a fascinating companion piece to Linklater’s BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET. I’ve always harbored a shameless crush on Delpy, and I’d like to see what she’s come up with. I’m going to try to make a screening of this one in the next few, but for now, check out this guy’s reaction:
Hey Harry!
I have not written any new reviews for a long time but decided to do so now after watching Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris!
It has been released here in Austria a couple of weeks ago and let me say this first: It is great!
I will start with giving you some story clues:
The story follows two days in the relationship of a couple who lives in New York. She (Marion - Julie Delpy) is a French photographer who takes him (Jack - Adam Goldberg) on a trip through Europe. After staying in Venice they decide to go to Marion's hometown Paris, where he is supposed to finally meet her parents.
Her parents (played by Marie Pillet and Albert Delpy, Julie's real life parents!) both don't speak English and during their stay Jack does not only have to cope with difficulties in comunicating with Margot's family, but also with the many lovers she had: To him, it seems like she had an affair with every single person they meet.
Julie Delpy is wonderful! I love her in general and I would call this film her version as a director of "Before Sunset"!
The film is hilarious and Delpy shows what a great writer she is! She is also a taltented director although her work as a director was not that outstanding. Still, she manages to show the audience her own, crazy interpretation of a crazy (or let's say very special) European town.
Her acting performance is great as always. I can only praise this woman's work on "2 Days in Paris" but there is just one thing I don't really like about it: The score!
She score the film herself and decided to use little music, but whenever she uses it, the music is getting on your nerves.
Anyway, I will continue in praising this film: Adam Goldberg!
He is a very talented actor and gives his best performance so far! His subtle interpretation of Jack's character is hilarious and he often reminded me of Jason Schwartzman!
Plus there is a great cameo by "Good Bye Lenin" star Daniel Brühl who plays a German tourist which marks another acting highlight in this picture.
I hope that this small film will get a wide release in the United States so that you guys can enjoy it as well! I personally think that it is the best film of 2007 so far and really enjoyed it!
