Apparently NEXT isn't so bad... at least according to this reviewer!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I was tricked this week... I skipped this very screening in order to attend the new Curtis Hanson flick LUCKY YOU, but then I realized, a little too late, that the LUCKY YOU screening was NEXT Wednesday.
And if there was any movie I'd love to have seen for free, it'd be this one. The trailers don't impress me at all. But we have a reviewer below who says the flick ain't so bad. We'll see.
hey there Quint. Just got back from a screening at the barton creek cinema. I saw "Next", starring Nic Cage Julianne Moore, and (oh so fine) Jessica Biel.
I must say that I wasn't going to go see it until this wonderful free pass fell into my lap. It didn't seem like much. Cage's character has an ability to see the future and the FBI needs him to track down a nuke that was snuck into the U.S. He doesn't want to help.
What was good:
The story was a bit dare I say unique and fun. It is basically spidey sense maxed out to super ultra fuckin groovin mode. The story about Nic Cage's character was very cool. I wanted to know more about him. I wish the movie was more about his character and his abilities, not so much witht he nuke thing. If it were then I think it would have been much much better. Cage's character wasn't much of a stretch for him but he was still like-able and funny. I wish that Nic would have gone a bit further with it though.
Biel's character didn't call for much so she didn't really have much to work with. However I do think that she is improving. Not good by any means, but better than past roles...yes even though this isn't too far off from what she has done before.
Moore's character was BADASS. She was just as fricken cool as Cage's. I wanted to know more about her. Why is she so damn focused and driven? Everytime she came on screen I was completely engaged. But she is a very good actress, I have always liked her. The story outside of Cage's character
Story: Outside of the nuke thing it was actually a cool story. I think they could have done a much better job that a "nuke" storyline. But its not a big deal, it was still fun. I really really loved the way they handled Cage's abilities. That was the STRONGEST part of the film. It was fricken HILLARIOUS almost every time he used his ability. Sure there was some interesting and unique things he did with them, but there were a lot of funny moments that made the entire theater get the giggles big time. Even during the action scenes.
So I was really happy with the way it ended. I was left feeling, "Great way, how else would you end it without it dragging on forever?" There was also a damn cool twist at the end! Yes, I said a twist. it was badass too cause your totally blindsided by it.
All in all I wouldn't say it was great but it was really fun. And people listen to me here. We don't go to see movies like this to get some greater understanding about life, or to see academy award worthy performances. This type of movie we go to see to BE ENTERTAINED. Pure and simple. You can't go this movie expecting some amazing thing, which is why I think I was surprised by how I was left feeling. It wasn't bad at all. I would categorize it under what I call "Assembly line film making". No super great shots (although there were a few fun ones), No super great lighting, or the real stuff that separates a film from a movie.
Go have fun or wait until rental.
Thank you Quint and if you use this call me Ocean.
