The Weinsteins hire the NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE to work only for them in the major territories!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love Asian horror. I think it is running its course now, but when it hit, I was all over it. I saw the original JU-ON: THE GRUDGE real early and was even quoted on the one-sheet and DVD cover. I have a soft spot for great foreign horror and I saw this film that the Weinsteins just gobbled up the rights to, Shinya Tsukamoto's NIGHTMARE DETECTIVE, at a film festival in October... and I walked out. I watched about half of the movie before I was just tired of it.
However, there is an interesting story there. It's about a haunted individual who has the curse of being able to step into people's subconscious and help them through trouble. But most of the people he helps are deranged and looking into their minds takes a large toll on him.
When mysterious suicides begin, a female cop turns to this man for help. There's a man who, like a Freddy Krueger, can kill people by entering their dreams. Unlike Freddy, he is flesh and blood, and just wills himself into peoples' minds.
Sounds great, doesn't it? The execution was horrible. The camera jerked so badly that it might as well have been filmed during an earthquake. The pacing was so bad my whole group decided to leave and not one of us is known for giving up on a movie. We had a few friends who stayed and each one told us we made the right move by leaving.
Leave it to the Weinsteins to give up picking up flicks only to remake them when they finally get a film that could benefit from that treatment. There's a great idea there, but instead of giving it another go, they're going to release the original in North America, the UK, Australia and NZ.
